SeanDeVriespinnedFulton’s BraidenDamhoffin1:33.Damhoff lookedtothrowthelighterDeVries earlyinthematch,butDeVriesfended itoffandendedupgettingDamhoffin atoughspottofinishtheheavyweight titleboutinthefirstperiod.
“IthoughtIhadathrowthere,butI messedupand hetookadvantage,” Damhoffsaid.“ButIdefinitelyfeellike Isetthetoneformyseasonbymaking thefinals,andIfeellikeI’vegotalot moreconfidencenow.”
Theboutofthetournamentwasthe 160-poundchampionshipbetween Erie-Prophetstown’sJaseGrunder andSterling’sTommyTate,bothpast DeJarnattchampions.
Thetwowrestledtoascorelesstie throughthefirstperiod,thenGrunder took the leadwithanescapemidway throughthesecondandatakedown with30seconds leftintheperiod.But Tateescapedrightatthehorntocut thedeficitto3-1,thenscoredareversal with25secondsleftinthethirdperiod totiethematch3-3.

bottompositionandmanaged to escapewithninesecondsremaining andsecurethe4-3win.
“IknewIhadtogetatakedown. I gotanescapetogo up 1-0,andI’m reallystrongonmyfeet,andonceIgot that3-0lead,IknewIcouldrelaxalittlebitwithanicelead,”saidGrunder, whowasvotedbythecoachesasthe mostoutstandingwrestleroftheupper weights.“Hescrambledalittlebit there,andhe’sreallygoodatscrambling,andhegotthereversal.ButI’m really strong onthebottom, andeven withninesecondsleft,IknewIwas probablyoneofthebestescapershere, andIwentandgotit.”
Tatesaidhewasdoingeverything hecouldtokeepGrunderfromgetting away,butcouldn’t match theE-P senior’sstrengthinthewaning moments.
