bclark@shawmedia.com STERLING – Sterling Mayor Diana Merdian presented Lexi Rodriguez, a Sterling High School volleyball standout who just finished a stellar college career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, with the key to the city at an autograph-signing event Dec. 23. A crowd of about 100 people, including young children with volleyballs, came to get an autograph and picture with Rodriguez, who dominated the volleyball courts at the libero position for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Rodriguez recently signed a contract to play professionally for League One Volleyball in Omaha. Rodriguez played in every set for the Cornhuskers since her debut match as a freshman in 2021, consistently leading the team in digs throughout all four of her seasons in Lincoln, Nebraska. She had 15 digs in her last game in the NCAA semifinals to set the school career digs record, breaking Justine Wong-Orantes’ mark of 1,890. Rodriguez finished her Cornhuskers career with 1,897 digs. Rodriguez is a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American, earning multiple firstteam selections and one second-team honor, along with being named Big Ten Defensive Player/Libero of the Year three times. “Tonight we gather to celebrate an extraordinary individual whose talents and dedication have brought immense pride to our city,” Merdian said. “Lexi, through your journey you’ve never for-

women’s sports more important and she continues to show the world that anything’s possible, even if you come from a small town.” Rodriguez had no idea she would be receiving the key to the city at the signing event and was humbled at the honor. “I’m just so honored to call this place home and I’m so grateful that you all have been so welcoming and amazing,” Rodriguez said. “I’m grateful for all of you, for my family, all my friends, and I will always be blessed to be able to come back to this special town. Thank you all.”

bclark@shawmedia.com DIXON – A pair of “super hospitable coffee lovers” are putting their touch on an iconic Fulton restaurant and bakery. Jay and Jenna Sanders bought Krumpets Restaurant & Bakery at 1016 Fourth St. from former owners Manreet and Melanie Kalyan in October. Jenna’s father bought the building. The Sanders also own 392Caffe, a craft coffee shop and restaurant with locations in Clinton and the Quad-Cities in Iowa. Jay Sanders said although he was not looking to expand, when the opportunity to buy the business arose, it did help solve one problem. “In the beginning, 392 did all of its own baking,” Sanders said. “But as we grew and had more locations, we couldn’t keep up. So we had to outsource it to local bakeries in the Quad-Cities area. So taking that back in-house was a big opportunity for us, as well as putting our coffee in other locations.” Krumpets has been a household name in the Fulton area for more than

enjoy many of the baked goods they have come to love while trying some new additions to the menu, including specialty coffee and energy drinks. He plans to enhance Krumpets’ coffee bar inside the restaurant. “The bakery currently does great business and I have a lot of amazing recipes that have been passed down ever since the original founder,” Sanders said. “But also, Savanna Pickett, our manager and the head baker, is known for her baked goods and my wife developed several recipes when she was our only baker.” Sanders plans to exclusively supply all 392Caffe locations with Krumpets’ pastries over time. He hopes the broader community will come to embrace Krumpets the way Fulton has. “Fulton has consistently shown love to this place,” Sanders said. “There are super loyal people who come here and the crew knows everybody by name and knows what they order. It’s a really cool culture inside, but it’s also a community with lots of deep relationships. That’s the heart of this place and that will definitely stay the same.”

DENISE MEREMA Born: January 1, 1955 in Savanna, IL Died: December 27, 2024 in Fulton, IL DENISE MEREMA, 69, of Fulton, IL, died Friday, December 27, 2024, at her home. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Lingle, Chaplain at MercyOne, officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM and continue until the time of the service. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Denise was born January 1, 1955, in Savanna, IL, to Clayton A. and Wanda J. Bailey. She attended Fulton grade schools and Fulton High School, graduating from Savanna High School in 1974. Denise married Michael A. Ritchie in 1973. On July 3, 1993, she married

Denise worked at Drives in Fulton, IL, and later transitioned to security roles at ADM and Wild Rose, retiring in 2021. She was a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton and found great joy in flower gardening, birdwatching (especially hummingbirds), and traveling on the Harley with her late husband, Ken. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include one daughter, Tracey (Joseph Findley) Regenwether of Clinton, IA; one grandson, Lane Regenwether; three brothers, Stephen (Bonnie) Bailey of Fulton, IL, Michael (Emily) Bailey and Anthony Bailey both of Galesburg, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ken; one sister, Sandra Kelly; one brother, David Bailey; one nephew, Faron Bailey; two great-nephews, Jordan Farr and Jayden Bailey; one great-great-niece, Savannah Namer. CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul is highlighting four new laws initiated by his office that will go into effect Jan. 1. House Bill 4623 cracks down on child sexual abuse images throughout Illinois by prohibiting the use of Artificial Intelligence technology to create child sexual abuse images that either involve real children or obscene imagery. Raoul introduced the legislation, which was sponsored in the General Assembly by state Sen. Mary Edly-Allen and state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz. Experts from the Attorney General’s office testified before legislative committees to explain technological advances that have enabled the creation of realistic, computer-generated images and videos of children and to highlight the ways in which AI-generated child sexual abuse images are harmful. When AI technology uses images of real children to generate child sexual abuse images, the children who are depicted experience real reputational, emotional and privacy injuries. However, even when the technology does not use images of real children, the

the state’s enforcement action. • Codify criteria language from the Illinois Civil Rights Act of 2003 to expressly prohibit unjustified disparate impacts in real estate transactions. The IHRA grants the Attorney General the authority to investigate broad, systemic problems or incidents of discrimination, referred to as “patterns or practices,” and file suits to remedy such violations. House Bill 5561 will protect workers from retaliatory conduct by employers, strengthen protections under state law and codify the authority of Raoul’s Workplace Rights Bureau to investigate and hold employers who retaliate or threaten to retaliate accountable. Raoul’s office, with a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, runs the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that investigates child exploitation crimes and trains law enforcement agencies. House Bill 5371, sponsored by state Sen. Laura Fine and state Rep. Ann Williams, will enhance civil rights protections for people in Illinois and provide important clarifications to the Illinois Human Rights Act. The new law, which is the result of collaborative efforts by the Attorney General’s office and the Illinois Department of Human Rights, specifically will: • Strengthen relief in discriminatory pattern-and-practice determinations by clarifying the term “per violation.” For example, a business that repeatedly discriminates against multiple employees could be held accountable for each instance of a violation. • The law also increases the maximum penalty amounts that a court may award in the Attorney General’s pattern-and-practice determinations and fair housing lawsuits. • Clarify that aggrieved parties have the right to take action to collect judgments, even if they do not intervene in

The Christmas decorations at the Ed Criss home on 17th Avenue were judged the winner of the annual Kiwanis Club Christmas lighting contest. Second place went to the Dewey VanZuiden home on 11th Avenue. Third place was the John Balk home on 14th Avenue.

Fulton’s two landfill sites temporarily were closed last week after a notice to Mayor Warren Wiersema and the city from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stating the city is in violation of the law by operating without the necessary operating permits. The Illinois Pollution Control Board has imposed a fine not to exceed $10,000 for the alleged violations and had the sites not been closed, the city could have been fined up to $1,000 for each day the violation continued.

The large task of digging out from Fulton’s 10-inch snowfall New Year’s Eve started early New Year’s Day. The snow fell overnight and ended about 8 a.m. Immediately after each block was opened to traffic, another city truck followed to spread sand and salt on the still slippery streets. A coating of ice still remains from the day of freezing rain that preceded the large snowfall. Dale Kinney, a former resident of Fulton who was a member of the local

school board and active in other local affairs, was one of 70 federal employees who received special awards from President Ronald Reagan. The distinguished service award given to Kinney included a cash bonus of $20,000.

Members of the Fulton City Council will meet in special session to pass a resolution that would approve the building of a tire recycling plant in Fulton’s Industrial Park. The plant has been in the planning stages for the past several years and if the next steps are approved, construction could begin in early spring. The Fulton High School boys basketball team will be celebrating its 1,000th victory on Jan. 20, 1995. The Steamers won their 1,000th game Dec. 11, 1993, defeating Riverdale 42-40. Since 1928 and through the 1993-94 season, the Fulton Steamers have posted 1,009 victories against 626 defeats. In those 66 years, the Steamers have had nine coaches.

Fulton postmaster Paul Delzell has retired from the Fulton post office. He began his career in Fulton in May 1979.

In 1980, he and his family moved to Fulton from Clinton, were he was a supervisor in the Clinton post office. Delzell has worked in government service for almost 41 years. Dean and Rosemary Huisingh, Fulton City Administrator Randy Balk, Mayor Howard VanZuiden, Margery Croy from Community State Bank, Bill and Gaile Brinkman and David Swift of Swift Hospitality Group moved the first shovels of dirt to complete 21/2 years of planning for a project in the city.

The 2014 Salvation Army bell-ringing effort was successful with more than $7,200 in donations. The Salvation Army’s annual effort is one of two initiatives of the Fulton Ministerial Association. Money received is used in the River Bend area to assist local families. The fund is administered by the Rev. Scott Stephan. Crowds came out to the Fulton fire station to enjoy a Christmas meal provided by main contributor Exelon. More than 320 people were served at the fire station and drivers delivered more than 130 meals.

Combination of factors can contribute to panic attacks Most people who have had true panic attacks realize they are much more than everyday anxiety. They are accompanied by a strong urge of loss of control and overwhelming anxiety and sometimes people have the sense of things closing in on them and feeling they are “losing it.” While panic attacks may be brought on by certain events, they also may occur without any warning. People who are not familiar with panic attacks sometimes label people who have them unfairly because of a lack of understanding. There may be a combination of factors that contribute to panic attacks. Stress or situations from a patient’s past such as the death of someone or other traumatic event may be contributing factors. Others feel there is a biologic basis – there may be chemical disturbances that occur, perhaps more easily in some on a hereditary basis, that sets them up for having panic attacks. As noted, panic attacks also may occur for no apparent reason. They may be sudden, with an overwhelming feeling of terror. In either case, the brain is sending out false messages at the wrong time or overreacting to a perceived danger.

YOUR HEALTH Stephen D. Harrison, M.D. Panic attacks may occur even when people realize there is no immediate danger. As with anxiety attacks, there may be a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath or a smothering sensation. There also may be a fear of dying, fear of losing control or going crazy and a feeling of detachment to reality. Numbness and tingling are common sensations. Nausea, abdominal distress, trembling, shaking, choking, sweating, hot or cold flashes and even faintness and dizziness may occur. About 3% to 5% of people experience panic attacks. Some may limit travel and some, unfortunately, may become homebound. The disorder can be extremely disabling. The good news is there are treatments and people with panic attacks often can be helped quite effectively. Behavioral therapy involves techniques that lead to gradual exposure of situations that may cause panic attacks. Patients are exposed to small elements of situations initially and are

gradually desensitized – much like allergy treatments – receiving more exposure to the threatening situations a little bit at a time. The patient develops tolerance to the situation and then should be able to confront the situation that previously may have triggered a panic attack. Cognitive therapy, which sometimes is referred to as reality therapy, helps patients identify the attitudes and perceptions that fuel the negative feedback cycle of panic attacks. The patient takes inventory, first asking if what they feel is real. Certainly, the symptoms they feel – rapid heartbeat, the smothering sensation, etc. – are real to them. The consciousness then takes over and the patient says, “Despite what I feel, am I really going to die in this situation or do I just feel like it?” Thus, one develops the ability to distinguish between one’s feelings and the actual reality. Cognitive therapy helps patients to identify the feelings and beliefs that intensify the panic attacks and gradually eliminate those feelings. Another method applied with caution is paradoxical intention. If one feels a panic attack or extreme anxiety coming on, they actually try to make it worse, telling themselves this is going to be the worst attack they ever had to

purposely overt the feelings and sensations they have. Surprisingly for some this may lead to a rapid reduction in symptoms or even failure to have a panic attack by means of the paradoxical nature on the subconscious. Precautions should be used for those not familiar with this technique. It’s best done through the guidance of someone with experience. Those with persistent anxiety attacks may find benefit from medications. Common medications include Xanax, Ativan and Clonazepam, which are all relatives of valium and potentially addictive and impairing. Atarax, also known as Hydroxyzine, works using the excess histamine that nature releases in response to stress. It is not addictive and most people will not be impaired on it. It is important for people to maximize their non-medicine regimens to include regular exercise, time for themselves, meditation and personal reflection. Deep breathing exercises also may be helpful for people during panic attacks. It also is important for individuals to avoid using alcohol or drugs to get them through the stressful situations. Family support can be quite helpful as well.

Whiteside County public safety sales tax slated for April 2025 ballot 7 STERLING – Whiteside County voters in April 2025 once again will be asked to consider a countywide sales tax to help fund emergency dispatch services. Residents were asked in November to consider the same 0.5% public safety sales tax but the measure failed after 65.85% of voters said no. The Whiteside County Board last week voted to again place the measure on the ballot. If approved, the sales tax would add an additional 50 cents for every $100 that shoppers spend on general merchandise in Whiteside County. The tax would not apply to groceries or items that must be titled or regis-

tered by a state agency, including watercraft, aircraft, trailers, mobile homes, qualifying drugs (including over-the-counter medications and vitamins) and medical appliances. Amy Robbins, the county administrator for Whiteside County, said dispatch services cost $1.8 million annually to operate. Outside of radio surcharges, the county and the cities of Sterling and Rock Falls foot the bill. Robbins said there is a deficit of about $500,000 each year. If Whiteside County voters approve the tax, cities would not have to pay to cover the services, and the money that Sterling and Rock Falls now spend for 911 services could possibly remain in their general funds for other uses. If the

tax does not pass, cities throughout the county would have to pay for services. “I’m in favor of this because the alternative to making up that money is usually an increase in property taxes or some sort of utility bill surcharge,” Whiteside County Board Vice Chairman Kurt Glazier said. “Plus, with new businesses like the Love’s truck stop coming to the area, we could have a lot of people who aren’t from the county helping to pay for our services.” A graphic shared by Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker on his Facebook page shows the estimated cost that each town and the county would be responsible for if the measure does not pass: • Tampico: $17,415

However, it can be lowered down the road when we find ourselves in better financial times.”

Volunteer millers to sponsor Game Day on Jan. 4

FULTON – Volunteer millers of de Immigrant Windmill will offer a free bowl of soup and table games at noon Saturday, Jan. 4. Both traditional table games and new versions will be set up for rounds of play. Guests also may bring their own cards or games. “What a great way to spend a cold winter day by sharing a bowl of soup and challenging each other to a few rounds of playful competition. Come join us,” Jude Holesinger said. The Game Day will be at the Windmill Cultural Center located at 111 10th Ave. across from the authentic Dutch windmill in Fulton. FULTON – The Windmill Volunteer Educators at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton will feature Connie Koehn’s “Cruising New England and Eastern Canada” during the Wild Winter Wednesday program at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 8. Connie and her husband, Ron, have traveled extensively since 1971 when they first met while studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria. Connie has presented travelogues locally since retiring from Deere & Co in 2006. Her presentation will focus on cruising from New York City to Quebec, up the coast of New England, through the Maritime Provinces of Canada and along the St. Lawrence River with a particular focus on the many sights Quebec City has to offer. ‘Messiah’ rehearsals begin Jan. 12 in Morrison
