Weekly meals still offered, but at new venue
BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media
A community tradition of twice weekly meals is going strong, despite a sponsorship and location change. But the welcoming atmosphere is still the same, with everyone in the community invited to attend the Fulton Community Meal Program now at the First Reformed Church, 520 15th Ave. in Fulton.
The meals used to be offered at the City of Fulton Community Center, but the building was sold to a private owner, so a new location was needed. The church generously offered their fellowship hall that included a county-certified kitchen for use.
The City of Fulton also ended its involvement in the program, so Barbara Mask volunteered to coordinate it so the social interaction and delicious meals could continue.
The Wednesday meals are catered by local long-term care facilities in the area, and the Thursday meals are cooked by Elsie Foster and her team of dedicated volunteers. Elsie is a certified cook and works in dietary departments in area senior residential facilities. With these weekly meals, she has found her niche in community involvement. The meals cost $5 and are served 11:30 – noon.
“The lunch is simple but always good and always different,” said Larry Buikema, Fulton resident and member of the church. From meats to salads to sides and a pie, the meal is enough to satiate an appetite, while encouraging fellowship and conversation to those in attendance. And the meals are available to all, not just senior citizens.
The church also offers a free community produce table, with fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables available for anyone in need.
