John Valenta, 65, of the 1700 block of Lucky Debonair Court, Wheaton, faces three charges of theft in excess of $100,000 – a Class X felony – and nine further counts of forgery, Darrah said. An investigation re- John Valenta vealed from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB. The investigation also indicated the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, was never delivered to the station. Valenta was originally charged Feb. 19 and posted bond on his $400,000 bail the next day, Darrah said. “The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement at the time. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.” Valenta’s attorney, Brad Telander, did not respond to a request for comment. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 1 before Judge Liam Brennan, Darrah said.

a really big goal of our school district is to keep our parents involved and be invested in the school district and in their child’s education.” According to Illinois Report Card from the Board of Education, Latinos make up 13.6 percent of the population at District 41, outlining the importance of programs catered to their demographic. Escobar is particularly proud of the parents who have attended for making the club a priority and recognizing the importance of their involvement with

authority,” Escobar said. “But here, you need to get involved, you have to ask questions. … It help[s] them be part of the community.” Each meeting is followed with a quick questionnaire to find out what the participants are learning from the book and what they’ve gained from the meeting. One of those participants, Loida Velasquez, a Churchill Elementary parent, said the book helped her realize her dream of finishing school and becoming a substitute teacher for grade school children. Velasquez hopes to enroll in the College of DuPage to pursue that goal. Velasquez feels the club has helped push her out of her comfort zone and made her connect with other moms. “I think that there are a lot of Latino women that need the space to share their stories, opinions, and experiences,” Velasquez said via translation from Escobar. “This is the best way to do it. To get together, form a club and share experiences while getting support.”

GLEN ELLYN – District 41’s Department of Bilingual and ELL Services is seeking to strengthen outreach efforts with Latino families through its Latino Parents Book Club. Gaby Escobar, District 41’s bilingual liaison, started the club Nov. 14 at Churchill Elementary School library, starting with the book “El Secreto Para Lograrlo” [The Secret to Make it Happen] and continuing for 12 weeks, capping off with an author presentation Feb. 23. The series resumes this Friday with its second book, “Supérate Mujer” (Powerful Women) and will continue every Friday until the end of the school year, according to Escobar. The goal of the club was to discuss not only books but also to help Latino parents with their children’s schooling while recognizing their own goals. The club has 12 members and is open to all District 41 parents. Katie McCluskey, director of English as a second language and Bilingual Programs, said the book club started out of a demand from moms to find ways to empower their children and themselves, and serves as a small slice in the larger pie that is parent outreach. “We’ve been doing parent outreach for a long time in District 41, and we know that the more that parents are involved, the more the kids are involved in school, the more they have longterm goals,” McCluskey said. “That’s

Glen Ellyn resident remembers son for spreading happiness to others By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – When it comes to things that will be missed about Andrew Mogni, his contagious smile will be one of them. “How happy it was,” Ben Mogni said of his son’s smile. Ben said his son had a way of spreading his cheerfulness to others. “The best way to be happy is to make other people happy,” Andrew he remembers Mogni Andrew saying. Andrew, a 20-year-old Glen Ellyn resident and University of Iowa student, died April 5 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He suf-

fered critical injuries during an alleged assault and robbery Jan. 14 while studying abroad in Rome. An investigation by Roman authorities is ongoing. Andrew majored in finance and information systems while at the University of Iowa. He made the dean’s list three consecutive times and was planning to obtain internships with consulting firms, according to his father. The Mogni family has experienced an outpouring of community support. A bank ac-

count was opened to collect donations and a wristband fundraiser was started – both were efforts by family friends to raise money for Andrew’s medical expenses – along with a Facebook initiative calling for daily 10 a.m. prayers for Andrew. “I mean, we’ve been overwhelmed by all the support,” Ben said. Andrew will be remembered in many ways, his dad said. Working at a local muscular dystrophy summer camp illustrated Andrew’s human-

itarian spirit. His humorous quirks, like playing the ukulele at 4 a.m. at his fraternity house, also will be missed. Although the tragedy has weighed heavily on the family, Ben is certain positives can be gained from this tragedy, particularly how people have banded together in their faith and prayer. “He brought a lot of people back together again,” he said. “I feel he brought a lot of people back to God because of his situation and the calls to prayer.” Ann Deegan, a long-time family friend, is happy to see Andrew honored for his giving nature. Despite the heartache, she believes God has a plan. “You always think the best, but sometimes the Lord has other plans,” she said. “I guess in this case he did.”

• STREAMING Continued from page 4 would likely pay about $100 per month based on the number of anticipated views, according to Director of Technology Mike Wood. The hardware required for a video stream would cost $11,000 to $12,000 to install, Wood said. Board member Erica Nelson addressed the possibility the cost might be higher than the value, and said the streaming must be high quality for the initiative to be worthwhile. “I think it’s a lot of money,” she said. “I want to do it well if we’re going to do it. It’s all around the quality of the service.” No other district in the area offers live streaming of school board meetings, according to Chief Communications Officer Erika Krehbiel. The district’s available audio recordings dating back to 2009 have seen 84 hits so far this year. The board will further discuss streaming options for the district during its meeting April 27.

In a few weeks, area voters will see a Clean Slate at the College of DuPage. Amid a crowded field of candidates, a slate of self-titled reformers – Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein – nearly swept the election in DuPage, Will and Cook counties, with each winning a seat on the board. “Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of DuPage,” the trio said in a statement on election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put tax-

payers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Such a uniform victory alone brings a new power dynamic to the board. With vocal supporter and Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton already at the table, a strong minority may soon become the majority. Hamilton said she was thrilled about the opportunity to reshape the board after a number of scandals involving waste and corruption have inundated the school. Allied with or occupying four of the seven trustee seats, Hamilton finds herself poised to take the chairmanship – something she’s confirmed she will pursue. “We’re very, very excited

She also said the school’s response – or lack thereof – to proposed bills calling for the college to pay for a state-run financial audit was “obstructionary.” Hamilton said she hoped

By J.Tom Shaw Sponsored Content is a form of marketing that offers a business the opportunity to reach a targeted audience in a new way. While sponsored content can take on many forms, typically the method consists of articles and video created on behalf of a business. The content is labeled as sponsored, and linked from a news or entertainment website back to the business website. The business is featured in the content, and recognized as the sponsor. If done correctly, sponsored content can be very effective in reaching consumers since it is delivered in the same form and function as other content on the website, such as news. This method, commonly referred to as native content, has taken off in the online publishing industry in recent years. The content is displayed in relevant categories, and written in such a way to improve search engine results. So if someone is interested in car maintenance, they might come across an article that interests them in the local newspaper website, or they might conduct a search on Google and

find the article that way. In either case, the viewer is then exposed to the advertiser’s message by reading the article, and viewing the accompanying photo or video. There are some important elements to make sure that your sponsored content is effective as possible. First, make sure your content is created and displayed to improve your search results, or search engine optimization, SEO. Think about what words people use to search for your product or service on Google, and then use those keywords in your content and headlines. Create value with your content by being informative and engaging. Your article is not an advertisement, so don’t turn off your reader by beating them over the head with a sales message. Rather, offer something of value, such as a helpful tip related to your product or service. Finally, make sure your video and article reflect your business’ personality. Are you reflecting a fun, personable image? Keep the copy conversational and light so people aren’t intimidated or turned off by your message.

But we have to get better control of what’s going on in our own house before going to the legislators.” The Clean Slate candidates elected April 7 did not respond to requests for comment, but Hamilton stressed that while they were on the same page, they weren’t one voice. “We are obviously going to be working together, but every single individual on this slate is an independent thinker,” she said. “So we will listen to each other, and we don’t necessarily agree all the time, but our outlook is for reform at the college and that is something we do share.”

There’s no need to fear wildlife Chipmunks and foxes are harmless unless you attack them. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. Wildlife is all around us, and those of us who live in the country enjoy seeing them. We had a fox who lived under our shed one spring and had four little ones. They were a joy to watch and never harmed anyone. That’s more than I can say for some people’s dogs.

By the time these kids are in kindergarten, school life begins and play time at home slowly comes to an end, it is something you have to face as a parent. … I wish inflation didn’t overtake salary raises as bad as they have since the first recession, but it is what it is. So I will keep leading by example in my household of working my butt off while my wife works part time while my kids go to all-day kindergarten (8-2). And God forbid we take advantage of them getting more educated while we survive – working two jobs and keep reaching for that so-called American Dream.

Kindergarten is crucial In today’s extremely competitive scholastic environment, Kindergarten plays a critical role in a child’s academic development. Adding a few hours a day seems more than appropriate.

die, becomes incapacitated or just leave. I think a better theory is to accept that in most cases, people make choices that they believe are in the best interest of their families. Even if they are not choices you would personally make, the world would be a better place if we all tried to support our neighbors instead of sitting in judgment of them.

No crime required This is an answer to “T-shirt to stop harassment.” Sometimes you don’t have to have committed a crime to be harassed. I can vouch for that. I’ve been pulled over three or four times for no reason, and they just come up with an excuse of, “your seat belt” or “you’re speeding.” And it’s all because you’re a person of color. That’s all it is.

LETTERS Junior Volunteers to host Family Fitness Walk To the editor: This year, a group of 37 high school students that attend Glenbard West, Benet Academy, St. Francis and Glenbard South founded a group called the Junior Volunteers, focused on community volunteerism. Our first event we are hosting is the Family Fitness Walk in Glen Ellyn to raise money for local charities Sunday. We are part of the 88-year-old Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society that hosts events such as the annual house walk every spring. Watching my mom work with Infant Welfare for many years inspired me and a group of my peers to add our help for other kids who need support. Like our parents, we believe service is important to maintain a strong community and decided to help in a way that was both fun for us and beneficial to our town. We have been planning the event, holding meetings, reaching out to many local groups since last fall. The Family Fitness Walk is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Lake Ellyn Park. Participants can come at any time and walk or run loops in the park. We will also have bands, great raffle items and food. This kind of event will hopefully be fun for all ages as well as bring

in donations for charities that help the less fortunate kids that we’ve grown up with. You can buy tickets online at www.glenellyninfant welfare.org or you can buy them at the walk. We would really appreciate your support on a cause that means a great deal to us. Paige Lane Glen Ellyn, Glenbard West High School sophomore

Consolidate all elections to increase voter turnout To the editor: At a March 14 League of Women Voters candidate forum, I made this plea to the audience: “I urge every eligible voter in Glen Ellyn to vote on April 7. Our local governance, indeed, our entire democracy, is strengthened by high voter turnout. We should all be concerned by the low voter turnout we see nationwide.” But on April 7, vote they didn’t. In Du-Page County, just 17.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. This slotted in between the 18.9 percent in 2013 and 16.7 percent in 2011. Those figures certainly don’t bode well for a strong democracy. By contrast, DuPage voter turnout in the even years of 2010, 2012 and 2014 elections were 51.6 percent, 71.9 percent and 49.1 percent, respectively. Why the difference? Even year elections are national and include presidential,

sure I would never see it again. I breathed a prayer for help and almost immediately my cellphone rang. It was my husband saying a young man had just come to our door and handed my wallet in, saying, “I thought I should return this to its rightful owner.” Then he turned around, got into his car and drove away. My husband was so surprised that he forgot to give the young man some money! He just stared at the car as it disappeared. He recalled seeing a small child in the back seat. I hurried home and found that nothing had been touched in the wallet – the cash and the cards were there. My license was there, right where I kept it, buried deep in the middle of family pictures, business cards and credit cards. I have so many questions: My license didn’t seem to have been touched, so how did the young man know where I lived? How did the young man get from Wal-Mart to my house in Wheaton so fast? Why would he spend his own time and gas to drive from Glen Ellyn to Wheaton to do this for a complete stranger? Why wouldn’t he take some cash for himself? He would have deserved it! Thank you, angel. You are a very special person. God bless you and your little child. Jean Ellsworth Wheaton

Simply changing what you eat and how you eat it does not detox your body as you may think. Join us for Detoxification 101 so you can avoid the myths, learn the facts and find healthy ways to detox your body for lasting results -without the headache.

HOSTED BY:

Cross Fit Training, Eating for Energy, Performance and Lean Physique. Cross Fit training programs are all the rage these days because of their ability to have an exercise approach and be a competitive fitness sport. CrossFit incorporates high interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometric kettle ball lifting, gymnastic, calisthenics and more. Britt Chamberlin Crowe an instructor at CrossFit OLAF in Batavia, will discuss how the proper nutrition, strength training, cardiovascular training, rest/repair and proper mindset will assist in achieving one’s fitness and body composition goals.

KEYNOTE SPONSOR

Goal Setting to reach your full potential Everyone has a starting point. Whether you are a novice or experienced athlete, we all are looking to improve in one way or another. That improvement might be to lose weight, to place in your age group in a local or national race, or simply to improve your fitness. Setting goals will give you motivation and boosts self-confidence. Having those goals, adjusting, and learning how to set them can help you achieve them. Ryan Giuliano started from not knowing how to swim in college to becoming the top ranked amateur Ironman athlete in the world in 2015. It has required him to set many short term and long term goals and keeping motivated and disciplined to attain them. He will discuss how to plan goals out and follow through to meet them.

PRESENTING SPONSOR

KEVAN KETTERLING, MD

CHRIS LEATHERS

Many coaches, personal trainers and fitness professionals are very well educated in their field. But just like any professional, it takes much more than just knowledge in our field to become successful when we own or operate a coaching/training business. Chris will help you to bridge that gap so that you can take your great skill and knowledge and turn it into a very successful business.

(BPT) - The big move - it should be in all-caps and announced with a deep, authoritative voice. THE BIG MOVE. And it’s coming to your family soon. It might be from one house to another across town, or it might involve crossing many state lines. No matter the distance, amount of belongings or number of people, your big move is going to be a big deal. There are ways to plan for your move so the big event doesn’t overwhelm you. Here are five moving tips from Penske Truck Rental, which has been helping customers complete their big moves for more than 40 years. 1. Less is better - The less you have to move, the easier your move will be on your body and your wallet. It will also be easier to fit everything into your new house. While packing, create three piles. The first is your “must-go” pile. The second is your “mustsell” pile, which includes anything you haven’t used in the last year, anything you have multiples of and anything you just don’t want any more. The third is the “must-throw” pile, and it contains anything that can’t be sold at a garage sale or donated. Start creating these piles now, and it will make moving day much easier.

Consumer Tips

2. Stock up on supplies - Big boxes might seem like a great idea because they can hold so much stuff, but what happens when you try to lift one and carry it down a flight of steps? Stock up on boxes of multiple sizes, but keep in mind that smaller is much easier to carry. Also stock up on foam and bubble wrap to protect your fragile items, a good supply of packing tape and bold markers for labeling boxes. You’ll also want to have moving blankets and hand trucks to make it easier to transport your items.

REAL ESTATE |

LOOKING FOR A NEW NEST?

5. Safety and security - Trucks are taller, wider, heavier and require more stopping distance than the vehicle you are used to driving. Take extra precaution, especially when the truck is loaded. Watch out for low-hanging tree branches and building overhangs, and use extra caution when cornering. To protect your belongings, park in well-lit areas and padlock the rear door. To make sure you’ve got everything you need on moving day, create a travel bag for keeping important paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, drinks and snacks close at hand. For a complete list of moving tips, visit www. PenskeTruckRental.com. As you cross days off on the calendar and the big day approaches, these tips will help you sail through the event with few conflicts. Before you know it, you’ll be settled in your new home.

Follow the flock and work with the best!

4. Pack smart - Load the heaviest items on the truck first. When you’ve got a sturdy base of the heaviest items, you can start stacking on top. This is when it’s handy to list a box’s contents on its side. If you have friends and family helping, they’ll know not to set books on top of your china.

Glen Ellyn’s Lifka takes running shoes to COD By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com When you think about college athletes, you don’t necessarily picture Tammy Lifka. But this 44-year-old Glen Ellyn mother of three is blasting away any labels, taking on competitors half her age as a member the College of DuPage track team. Running came naturally to Lifka, but it came late. In 2007, looking to run as a way to get fit after having children, she never expected to become a marathon runner, let alone change the trajectory of her life from a stay-at-home mom to athlete. “I was your stereotypical stay-at-home, go-to-the-gym mom,” Lifka said. “I just started running on my own. Before that, I worked out doing step aerobics with a video but nothing major beyond going for a walk with a stroller.” Lifka said she chose running because it was inexpensive, and she would run about a nine to 10 minute mile three days a week. Her running really took flight after a friend from Madison invited her to participate in the Syttende Mai Run, a 20-mile run/walk in Wisconsin, in May 2007. “I thought she was crazy,” Lifka said. “I could run three to four miles, max.” Once the race started, it was harder to run and walk because it was difficult to regain her momentum after walking, she added. “So I just ran the whole thing,” Lifka said. “It surprised me that I could do it because it was hilly. I was very sore afterwards.” She might have been sore, but she was pumped and had her eyes set on the Chicago marathon taking place that October. Her training took on a new tone, and the once solitary runner joined runner clubs in Glen Ellyn and Elmhurst. “To be a better runner you need to train with people who

language of marathoner runners was alien to her. “People would say to me if I ran a 3:45 I would qualify for Boston,” Lifka said. “I didn’t know what they meant.” She would soon find out, crossing the finish line with a time of 3 hours, 43 minutes. With each marathon, her

times dropped. She ran Boston in 3:20 and again in 2009 with a time of 3:16. She completed the 2009 Chicago marathon in 3:03, the Napa Valley race in 2011 in 2:56 and a 2012 Kiawah Island marathon in 2:50. A fracture in her shin prevented her from attempting to run in the 2012 Olympic Trials,

and she was gearing up for second try in the fall of 2014 when she had a second medical set back. Her break from running took her in yet another direction: College of DuPage’s twoyear physical therapy program. “I am ecstatic about,” Lifka said. “And I was eligible to run on the track team.” It is the best of both worlds for Lifka, who works part time at a running store and physical therapy center. Runners would seek her advice about issues such as plantar fasciitis and she became intrigued with the idea of becoming a physical therapy assistant. Lifka has a master’s degree in education and tutored for about 15 years, but this time around, the school experience is a little different, she admits. “I’m doing the best I’ve ever done,” she said. “It’s harder because I’m doing more studying. With my master’s, [school work] was more project-based. For kinesiology, you have to memorize and apply it in a scenario, so its very different types of studying.” As a member of the COD track team, her focus is the 5K and 10K. The team practices for two hours five days a week on an indoor track, which is not the best for older bodies, according to Lifka, who is looking forward to running outdoors again this spring. While her teammates are more than 20 years younger, they have become used training with her. It’s when she and her team go to events that other teams look at her funny, she said. But Lifka just shrugs off any kudos to her athletic achievements, however, explaining that opportunities are what you make of them. “There is always a way to get [run] time in,” she said. “Once you start a routine, it is easier to do because it becomes part of your lifestyle. It’s a matter of what we really want to do. I feel like most anyone can do it if they put their time in.”
