mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn School District 41 problem-based learning coaches are blending education and outdoor fun with the initiative’s first camp. Problem-based learning is an initiative that encourages students to work together to use communication, critical thinking and self-directed learning skills to solve real-world problems, according to district documents. Hadley Junior High School sixthand seventh-graders have been participating since mid-July in the day camp, which ends July 23. “It was an organic next step in what we like to do and how we like to progress,” problem-based learning coach and camp organizer Hillary Shumate said. Coaches met with Superintendent Paul Gordon and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Accountability Karen Carlson and came up with the idea of continuing problem-based learning with a summer camp. Campers are working with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, proposing and developing a plan to

outdoor experiences. The camp kicked off at Blackwell Forest Preserve with Forest Preserve District Education Outreach Specialist Chris Gingrich and other district staff talking to participants about the outdoor playtime deficit. As part of the trip, campers wrote about how it feels to be outside, what they like most about it and their favorite thing about summer. They finished with a post-reflection on how being outdoors affected them. The camp continued at Hadley, with participants researching and collaborating on a solution to the problem. Campers are working in groups, something Shumate said helps them determine their skills. “I think there are really great ways for kids to find their strengths and showcase those throughout this process,” she said. Wheaton Park District Adventure Education Supervisor Mike Kelly, who has been selecting group activities for the campers, believes the exercises will help the students grow. “It will provide them the opportunity to take a leadership role, develop active listening skills … trust each other and support each other,” he said. Shumate hopes District 41 will continue the camp and that it will expand over the years. “I know I would like to do it again and hope it continues to grow,” she said.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE

Trustees, accreditation reviewers discuss dysfunction By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The division of the College of DuPage Board of Trustees was clear as accreditation reviewers discussed the subject with trustees earlier this week. The school hosted a trio of peer reviewers from the Higher Learning Commission, a national organization that oversees college accreditation. The commission turned its attention to College of DuPage after state and fed-

Reviewers were on campus July 21 and 22 to interview the board, faculty, staff and other community members to determine whether the college still meets

the required accreditation criteria. Although the conversation at a public special meeting between reviewers and the board July 21 touched on several topics, including policy, trustee training, professional development and finances, much of the meeting was spent airing grievances between the board’s two camps – the “Clean Slate” trustees who swept the April 7 election and the old guard. Many meetings since the election have been derailed by infighting and personal attacks, with a multitude of

4-3 votes reflecting the divide. Reviewer David Wendler said the commission is concerned about the board’s frequent conflicts. “This is the College of DuPage,” Wendler said. “It’s a college. A college educates students. Students are why we’re all here. It is hard to grasp why there should be a split ... My question is, as a board, is your first thought, is your major discussion, ‘How will this impact students?’”

Board of Trustees mulls changes to school’s spending policy By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees may take steps to change certain spending policies. All three proposals are related to major controversies in the past year. During the board’s July 16 meeting, Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton presented a series of revisions and additions

to board policies addressing vendor billing, the creation of a college audit committee and money transfers. Currently, policy does not require the board to review individual vendor bills less than $15,000, which are known as imprest payments. The school faced scrutiny in 2014 when watchdog group For The Good of Illinois released documents that stated the college spent $95 million since Jan-

uary 2009 on imprest payments without board approval or public knowledge. Under the proposed policy, the board would be provided a list of all payments made by the school, regardless of amount. The list also would be available in a searchable, public format on the college website. “It is time to end the secrecy about COD spending,” Hamilton said. “We are committed to opening the college

to all. It is your money that gets spent here, not ours.” The board also considered the creation of a new audit committee, tasked with assessing risk and addressing financial statement reporting; internal controls; and compliance with applicable laws, rules and policies, according to board documents.

GreenSpace abounds in downtown Glen Ellyn By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn is going green. The GreenSpace initiative, a collaboration between the village and participating downtown merchants, is taking place throughout the month of July. The effort, led by the village’s Environmental Commission, seeks to create greater public awareness about environmental topics by bringing together local retailers with photographers, sculptors, landscape designers and other artists to transform Glen Ellyn storefronts into art installations, according to a village news release. “In many ways, it draws people to the downtown area while they’re enjoying the local art as well,” Assistant Village Manager Al Stonitsch said. Last year, a similar project was undertaken, calling attention to the environmental benefits of using a bicycle. It featured bikes that had been

The initiative continues this year with various environmental themes, including dwindling monarch butterfly populations, renewable energy, water conservation, recycling and renewing furniture,

and minimizing food waste, the release stated. More than 15 retail locations are hosting GreenSpace displays. Among the venues featuring artwork are three vacant properties. Participating business The Renaissance Art Studio

created its own contribution, printing, framing and aligning individual words to state “It’s easy being green.” Norabella Boutique incorporated dried plants, birch branches, tree trunks and succulents to accent its front window. Paisley on Main Manager Jennifer Dorn created her display by painting a green floral border on the window, dressing a mannequin in a moth skirt with floral accents and including a tree with a trunk made out of recycled boxes. Dorn said she enjoys decorating her storefront and this was the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about being environmentally conscious. “We think it’s a great idea to bring attention to being green,” she said. At Olive ’n Vinnie’s, the Environmental Commission built a storefront to honor the problem-based learning efforts at Glen Ellyn School District 41 by incorporating native plants and butterflies, which are relevant to the district’s

problem-based learning work. The vacant Giesche Shoe Store now features an installation by artist Sarah Udelhofen with 90 colorful origami raindrops suspended from string, which Udelhofen hopes will generate consciousness about harsh droughts happening in the U.S. “As the climate changes, the Midwest is expected to experience longer periods of drought with interspersed rain events that are more intense,” she said in a statement. “What can we do to prepare?” Environmental Commission member and GreenSpace organizer Adrianne Gregory said the goal of the initiative is to offer the community something fun that also conveys a message. “It’s to engage visitors, shoppers and residents in thoughtful conversation about important environmental issues presented in an artistic format,” she said. “It’s the idea of environmental issues and art coming together.”

8 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Speech Intelligibility

Q: Why can a normally intelligent person

with a hearing loss continue to have difficulty understanding speech after getting hearing aids?

A: The experience

the person has when speech is difficult to understand with new hearing aids has to do Dr. Terri Lightbody with what two possible (630) 580-5777 conditions: Phonemic regression and auditory distortion. Both conditions are the result of hearing loss that goes untreated with amplification for a lengthy period of time. Phonemic regression is a decrease in speech intelligibility associated with deprivation of the auditory system. With a long-standing hearing loss, the brain begins to “forget” many of the sounds that are essential for speech understanding because they are not hearing them. Once the patient is fitted with hearing aids, the brain receives these sounds that it hasn’t heard and now has to re-learn these sounds and what they mean. The longer and more severe the hearing loss, the longer the duration is to adapt to

hearing aids. Auditory deprivation is the lack of auditory stimulation of the cochlea and brain. The cochlea is the organ of hearing located in the inner ear next to the brain. It consists of sensory hair cells and fluid. The sensory hair cells receive auditory cues by pressure from through the fluid surrounding it. This movement then converts the auditory cues into electrical energy and transmit through the Eighth auditory nerve to the brain. The sensory hair cells can suffer damage from loud noises by guns, machinery, blasts, etc. and become bent or broken. The hair cells cannot be regenerated nor repaired. With the lack of auditory stimulation, these hair cells lose their integrity, much like the human muscle. The principle of “don’t use it, you lose it” applies here. We cannot afford to underestimate the effect of long-standing hearing loss that goes untreated. We know from clinical and real life experiences that the sooner a person with hearing loss chooses to treat it, the better and more successful the outcome is.

Glen Ellyn man allegedly threatens on Facebook to kill Chicago mayor By JUAN PABLO GARCIA jugarcia@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A Glen Ellyn man was ordered detained by a U.S. magistrate judge for allegedly posting threats on Facebook to shoot Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others, according to court documents. Mohammad Waqas Khan, 30, appeared in U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois on July 20 after the U.S. government filed a criminal complaint as a result of several threatening posts he allegedly made on his public Facebook profile. Khan is charged with transmitting in interstate commerce communications containing a threat to injure the person of another, the complaint stated. A frequent Facebook user of more than three years, Khan’s activity on the social media website since May 2015 included threats “that have become increasingly concrete, specific and determined in nature,” according to the complaint. On May 7, Khan allegedly posted, “Stop moralizing and start FIGHTING. ... You need to pick up arms and raise hell.” Later that day, he allegedly wrote, “Tonight is promising to be a murderous night!” and, “I want a high net worth individual to shoot. I want this to be a real human tragedy,” the complaint stated. On May 13, Khan allegedly expressed his animosity toward Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other elected officials on Facebook, stating Emanuel and “the uppity aldermen” doomed Chicago and that they “shall be taught a lesson you will not forget! Rabid dogs!” according to the complaint. His Facebook profile also contained photos of firearms, including one of Khan wearing a black mask and holding a shotgun. Additionally, some of Khan’s Facebook posts allegedly make reference to leaving the United States and to a deadline, the complaint stated. A close family friend of Khan’s who was interviewed by authorities said the Glen Ellyn man had plans to travel to Pakistan on June 8. Law enforcement was able to verify he had purchased the tickets April 24, and that the return date was scheduled for July 20, according to the complaint.

In honor of her dedication and contribution to the community Elizabeth was named Glen Ellyn Citizen of the year in 2009. • DYSFUNCTION

Continued from page 4 He also pointed out that student trustee Gloria Roark frequently asked trustees to stop bickering. “It raises the question – is this a dysfunctional board?” he said. Trustee Dianne McGuire, one of the board’s old guard, said her time on the new board has been “disturbing,” “upsetting” and “intensely political and very destructive.” She said she didn’t trust other trustees for reasons including the hiring of a pair of law firms before the existing board officially convened as a body, the hiring of Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton’s public relations manager for work at the school and a lack of monthly financial reports. Trustee Erin Birt, who was chairwoman before Hamilton was voted into the position by the Clean Slate, said the previous board could put aside its differences more readily than the current iteration. She also complained about lack of communication from the new trustees to the old, particularly before meetings.

• CHANGES

Continued from page 4 Committee members would be appointed by the board chair for two-year terms and consist of at least three trustees and a “financial expert,” who would be either a trustee or outside hire. The committee would have the “unrestricted access” and authority to conduct or allow districtwide investigations through an as-yet-unestablished internal audit department. Hamilton said such a committee could have prevented “the WDCB disaster,” in which an engineer at the college radio station allegedly stole more than $200,000 through false invoices for parts and work, and provided a better sense of the financial woes at the school’s Waterleaf Restaurant. “Without an audit committee, there is no independent, internal function evaluating performance,” she said. In addition, the board considered changing a policy

“It raises the question – is this a dysfunctional board?” David Wendler Accreditation reviewer Reviewer Samuel Kerr said there must be a “higher reason why [the board] is here than some personal agendas.” Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi, of the Clean Slate, said the gap between the two sides is overblown and the board often finds consensus, such as its shared support for making the college’s Waterleaf Restaurant more student-focused. She said the heated public discussion is part of bringing trustee debates into the open. Trustee Charles Bernstein said the new trustees provide oversight “that just wasn’t there before.” Hamilton called the current board “acrimonious,” but offered positive statements as well. “We are very focused on the quality of education here at the college,” she said. “And we’re very focused at meeting the criteria [for accreditation].” that allowed President Robert Breuder, who is on administrative leave, to order a series of promotional postcards in the weeks surrounding the April 7 election and transfer funds to pay for them without board approval. Currently, the board approves fund transfers on a quarterly basis, often after the money has been spent, college Treasurer and Senior Vice President of Administration Thomas Glaser said at a May 14 meeting. Glaser also is on administrative leave. The proposed change would reverse the process, requiring all transfers be first approved by the board. Faculty Association President Glenn Hanson said he supports the changes. “I think openness and communication and having stuff online is great,” he said. “There is no benefit to hiding, or trying to hide, information. It is only costly in the long run.” The board plans to host another public reading of the changes before voting on them at a future meeting.

(BPT) - Spring and summer continue to be the most popular months for selling your home, according to Realtor.com. And with many homeowners staying in their houses for an average of 13 years, your home will surely need some sprucing up to add to its curb appeal. By following a these simple steps, you can increase your home’s value without breaking the bank. Rejuvenate the outdoor living area. Before making a trip to your local home center, make sure to wash the dirt, mildew and general grime off the outside of your house. A power washer is a great tool to help clean siding and renew the surface of decks. A good washing will also bring out the true color of a beautiful flagstone walkway or patio. Invest in the best tools for the job. One of the most useful tools in creating curb appeal is a hose. From power washing your deck and siding to maintaining your lawn and garden, your hose takes more abuse than any other tool. The Gilmour Flexogen hose is perfect for a variety of outdoor applications and is the strongest hose in its class. Its durable eight-layer construction is ideal for homeowners who put their tools to the test season after season. Give your yard a manicure. When its best features are hidden by an overgrown lawn or shrubs, your home can appear uninviting. It is recommended to regularly mow grass to a length of two and a half to three inches. This not only helps the grass to grow, but it also provides for a thicker lawn to prevent weeds. Adding landscaping bricks around the border of your garden and flowerbeds also gives your lawn a more premium look. Add seasonal color with the right vegetation. When choosing plants and flowers, consider what they will look like during different times of the year. For an all-season curb appeal, plant shrubs and flowers that offer colorful fall foliage or leaves with unique textures when not in full bloom. To help you get the best visual results, scout out the ideal locations around your yard before planting. Be sure to account for areas that are always in the sun or are well-shaded. Maintain the look. One of the key steps to preserving a healthy lawn and garden is to provide at least one inch of water per week through a regular watering schedule. You’ll want to choose a hose that has the durability to last even after you’ve moved into your new home. Gilmour Flexogen’s patented construction allows for all-weather performance and delivers maximum functionality in temperatures as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. For additional watering and gardening tips, visit www.facebook.com/GilmourGardenAndWatering.

WWC Winner Chalupny Scores in Chicago’s 1-1 Tie with Boston

Visiting Breakers with strong performance against NWSL-leading Red Stars Lisle, Il. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars drew 1-1 with visiting Boston Breakers in the club’s official “Welcome Home, World Cup Stars” match on Saturday night. U.S. defender-midfielder and Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny scored the go-ahead goal in her first NWSL match since winning soccer’s most prestigious trophy, followed by an equalizer from Breakers forward Stephanie McCaffrey, both tallies coming after the break. Chicago honored all eight of their World Cup stars in front of a capacity crowd and saw four of them take the field for the first time since rejoining the team, Chalupny and Canada veteran Karina LeBlanc both registering starts while American legend Shannon Boxx and Canucks forward Adriana Leon entered in the second half. New Zealand captain Abby Erceg put in another strong performance anchoring the backline for the Red Stars. In a relatively uneventful opening half, Chicago forward Jen Hoy had the first dangerous look in the 9th minute of play, her low drive from the left side of the box whistling wide of the right post. Strike partner Sofia Huerta came even closer to finding the net twelve minutes later, as she aimed for the same post from a similar position, cutting to her right and producing a powerful drive that whizzed just over the frame guarded by World Cup winner Alyssa Naeher. The visiting Breakers had a chance to score in the 42nd minute. LeBlanc came far off her line to punch out a long ball into the attack, which subsequently fell to the feet of Katie Schoepfer, whose long-distance effort forced the Red Stars netminder to leave

her feet for a quality parry to her right. The home side got on the board nine minutes after the break, defender Taryn Hemmings earning the assist against her former team by getting past an opposition player on the right and taking the ball to the byline before centering to Chalupny for a simple finish into the open net. The lead would be short-lived, as McCaffrey equalized just after the hour-mark. The striker, who was drafted by Chicago in the 2015 NWSL College Draft and subsequently traded to Boston, latched on to a through ball from the left sideline and calmly slotted past the onrushing LeBlanc and inside the right post to make it 1-1. McCaffrey nearly had another in the 65th minute, as she cut to her right inside the area and sent a curling effort toward the right post that was tipped wide by a diving LeBlanc. The Red Stars were unable to find a winner during the remainder of the match, as their opponents from Massachusetts displayed impressive tactical discipline to prevent any dangerous opportunities. The Chicago Red Stars look to return to their winning ways when they travel to take on Boston once again this coming Wednesday, July 22. The club’s next home match is a blockbuster clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that could feature a combined total of eight World Cup winners. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com.

GLEN ELLYN – With the talented trio of Justin Pierce, Alex Passi and Brian Cochrane set to return for their third year on the varsity this winter, expectations already were high for the Glenbard West boys basketball team. And nothing that has transpired this summer has tempered those expectations. The Hilltoppers, according to head coach Tim Hoder, played nearly 30 games together, taking part in four tournaments [at Ridgewood, Glenbard East, Lake Zurich and Illinois State University] and several one-day shootouts. “We are feeling good about it,” Hoder said. “At times, we played really well and we beat some good teams. But one of the things about the summer, we don’t play everybody every game. It’s a chance to play some of your younger kids and a chance to play different lineups. “For example, the last week [of the summer], we had 10 games in four days so you kind of pick and choose when to play people. It’s a great opportunity to play a lot of different kids and play some of the juniors who you don’t see much.” Along with Pierce, Passi and Cochrane, fellow seniors Nick Diver, Connor O’Shea and Sam Noland are back, among others. “I’m optimistic for next year for sure,” Hoder said. “They’ve worked hard. And when you have kids who are three-year varsity kids, you’ve got some experience and that

Golden goal

Red Stars look to maintain momentum of World Cup win

By MATT LE CREN

Red Stars at home

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LISLE – The United States returned to the pinnacle of women’s soccer by winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Vancouver earlier in July. It was a record third world title for the U.S. and first since 1999, and the response from the general public is an indication of how much the sport has grown in popularity and talent over the past 16 years. Four members of the Chicago Red Stars – forward Christen Press, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Shannon Boxx, and defender Julie Johnston – were on the U.S. team and all were amazed at the support. “Being my first World Cup it was absolutely unbelievable, and to win it, definitely I don’t think you can top that,” Johnston said. “I didn’t know what to expect in the sense of the fans. “In every single game it was absolutely remarkable to see how many U.S. fans were there, and when we came back to the States it was even greater.” The team was feted with a ticker-tape parade down the “Canyon of Heroes” in New York and won Team of the Year honors at ESPN’S ESPY awards. The fanfare stunned even the veteran Boxx, 38, who will retire at the end of the year. “I think the ticker-tape parade was pretty amazing,” Boxx said. “Not everybody is given the honor to do that. I’ve been around a long time and I think that’s one of the coolest events that I’ve ever been part of.” Boxx was a member of four World Cup teams and has seen the popularity rise over the years. “It has gotten so much better,” Boxx said. “You go back to 1991 [the first World Cup which the U.S. won in China]. Nobody was waiting for them at the airport. Then in 2011 we didn’t win but we got an amazing reception when we came back to the U.S. I think that’s when it started.” But will it continue? Boxx, Chalupny, Johnston and Press returned to Chicago on July 18 and a crowd of 3,560 – the first sellout in franchise

Chicago Red Stars player Vanessa DiBernardo kicks the ball downfield July 18 in a National Women’s Soccer League game against Boston. The Red Stars are hoping the momentum of the United States’ Women’s World Cup win this summer will lead to more recognition for the team and league. history – saw the Red Stars tie Boston 1-1 at Benedictine University to remain in sole possession of first place in the NWSL. “I think the challenge is to keep it going,” said Chalupny, 31, the captain who scored Chicago’s only goal against Boston. “World Cups only happen every four years and winning it definitely gave us a little bump in viewership and the amount of attention that has been given to the sport, but the great

thing is we have this league and we play every year and it’s in people’s hometowns. People can watch us play and that will continue the momentum.” Such bumps have happened before. The U.S. victory in the 1999 World Cup led to the establishment of the first domestic professional league. But three such leagues all folded after three seasons and the NWSL is now in its third season. Will this time be different?

“We’ve got to keep winning,” Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler said. “In a town like this with nine or 10 other pro sports teams, if we don’t win, we’re off the radar. “We’ve got the brand, we’ve got the talent and we’ve got people coming in the stadium who have never seen us before. We just have to thrill them when they come and they’ll usually come back. “That’s on us. That’s on ... marketing through the people

who have been in the stadium, better relations with the press in Chicago. We can convert that.” The Red Stars have plenty of marketable young stars in the 26-year-old Press and 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year Johnston, 23, plus Under-23 National Team members Vanessa DiBernardo and Danielle Colaprico and 22-year-old leading scorer Sofia Huerta. “I think that it is an incredibly important moment for women’s soccer,” Press said. “The important thing is for the fans who have been so great for us and for the national team to continue to support us and come out to the NWSL games and see that there’s hundreds of women in this country that play great soccer. “It is something worth watching and I think if the fans continue to support us in our leagues, that is going to push women’s soccer in America forward at every level.” There is no doubt the Red Stars have high expectations. Chicago head coach Rory Dames called the atmosphere of the July 18 game “fantastic” but said the team didn’t play up to its caliber. “Regardless of why people are here, I would like us to play the way we’re capable of playing,” Dames said. “I think we have a lot of exciting players on the team outside of the national team players. Hopefully we can get some more fans in because they want to see some players and buy into the team and really start to enjoy what they see.”
