Other things that allow our member businesses to gain visibility include the events that we host throughout the year. Some are held in person, while others virtually. We are looking to have the Home and Business Expo, Annual Golf Outing, the Cruisin to Genoa Car Show, VolksFest weekend including Rumble on the River and the Great Genoa Duck Race & Family Fun Fest, the Fall Crawl and Celebrate the Season again in 2022. The Chamber also partners with the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers to host many other events this year including the new Egg-apalooza City Easter Egg Hunt, the Poker Walk and the annual VolksFest with the Craft Beer and Wine Festival. We continue to partner with local government and other organizations to pursue improvements in the overall quality of life for the city, county, and region, particularly in the areas of transportation, education, healthcare, tourism, economic development, community development, and workforce development. How

“Sweet” it is in Genoa

Those who have a sweet tooth and consider dessert worthy of being a meal in of itself, as well as those who just crave a little treat, do not have to travel to find a variety of sweet treats thanks to Genoa being the home of three unique bakeries.

By: Chris Walker

Latsis Bakery

John Latsis, who has worked in restaurants since 2007, initially ran his Latsis Bakery out of his home in Sycamore before opening up his current storefront location at 401 W. Main St. in Genoa in the summer of 2015. While the Latsis Bakery menu features a variety of pastries, donuts, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, cheesecakes and pies, they also serve some breakfast items, including fresh, organic coffee, build your own egg sandwiches, biscuits and gravy as well as paninis and potato bowls during lunch. “When I first opened I was doing sandwiches and then that kind of faded but we’ve put the paninis back on the menu,” he said. “The diced potatoes are very popular. People like it when you put some new stuff on the menu.” Latsis Bakery is open six days a week. The doors open at 6 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday while they reopen at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and remain open until 1 p.m. Latsis also makes wedding cakes and other specialty items.

Sweet-DeLights

Sweet-DeLights began as way for owner Melissa Freund to raise money to go on Mission trips where she could help others. That was in 2013. In the spring of 2022, Freund was in the process of opening her own store at 113A W. Main St. after operating online. “I just kept going with it and then quit my 9-to-5 job as a church secretary to do this full-time,” she said. “Life is throwing lemons at everybody these days so let’s celebrate by having a piece of cake.” Originally from a big community in California, Freund worked for 16 years in a Quad Cities Hyvee bakery before moving to the area in 2012. “I think the seed might’ve been super tiny, but it was planted that this was something I’d like to be doing,” she said. “Coming from a big community where I went to high school it was like life came to a screeching halt here. I love it that everybody knows everybody. I love this small town, which is growing too.” Sweet-DeLights promises to help keep the town sweet with her treats, which includes cake pops, cake balls, cupcakes, cakes, chocolate treats and more. Some can be found today at Open Door Coffee, 502 W. Main St., where select SweetDeLights items are on the menu.

Sugar On Top Bake Shop

Hardrocker Alice Cooper hasn’t visited the Sugar On Top Bake Shop, 316 Main St., but he loved the cake that was made for him. “He was doing a fundraiser that was supporting young musicians during the pandemic,” said Jennifer Drendel, owner of the Sugar On Top Bake Shop. “We presented a cake to him and it was auctioned off to benefit charity. We’ve done one for Korn the band and the band members found us on social media, which was surreal. We also did one for Rob Zombie and Sheri Moon and she wouldn’t let him cut it. The path this has taken me down is literally more than I could’ve dreamed of.” Speaking of dreams, many have imagined what they’re wedding day would be like, and Drendel thrives on being a part of a couple’s unforgettable, special day with divine wedding cakes whose beauty can only be outdone by deliciousness. “It’s a blessing to be a part of these occasions so I put a lot of attention into these bigger events and I have a soft spot for weddings in general,” she said. “In all special occasions really. I’ve been borderline obsessed with weddings so each cake order I take I almost treat it like it’s my own wedding cake. I want to talk to each couple to see what they envision, what they have their heart set on and make the best possible creation I can for them.” Drendel took a cake decorating class after high school before attending additional classes at Elgin Community College. After the “cupcake bill” was signed into law in 2015, which allow home kitchens in residences as long as they comply with state and county regulations, she began baking out of her home. She then moved into a little kitchen in Kirkland and then into her current storefront. “It grew quickly,” she said. “All those memories, every birthday is a big deal, graduations and religious ceremonies, those memories are made at those events with a cake on display. It’s not something that I take lightly. Dessert is a big deal.” And thankfully it’s something that’s not difficult to find locally in Genoa with three bakeries, each an expert in satisfying your sweet tooth as well as being the delicious co-star at your next celebration

Custom Aluminum Offers High School Students Internship Experience

By: Chris Walker

S

everal years ago, Custom Aluminum CEO Steve Dillett and President Shane Tredup were looking for a way to give back to the Genoa and Hampshire area.

They found it by developing a work-study program for high school students and a summer internship program for those 18 years of age and older. The offerings are an extension of Custom Aluminum’s longstanding emphasis on having a knowledgeable staff and valuing its employees as it offers onsite educational classes from entry level to advanced concepts. “Those two gentlemen were looking for a way to offer something to students where they could learn about manufacturing,” said Alex Dumoulin, sales engineering manager for Custom Aluminum. “We come to the schools and talk about the program. In the past we’ve been able to visit schools and meet with industrial tech classrooms and talk to professors but with the pandemic, the plan is to make the most of it that we can.” The work study program affords high school seniors from Genoa-Kingston and Hampshire the opportunity to attend school in the morning and join Custom Aluminum in the afternoon for four hours a day, five days a week and learn about the engineering side of the business. “They create prints, all sorts of drawings, so they get a general feel for that,” Dumoulin said. “Before COVID we’d have retired professors from Kishwaukee (Community College)and Waubonsee (Community College) come in and teach sections

12 GenoaBook_2022.indd 12

as well. It’s a year-long program so they get a lot of exposure so that by the time they are done with senior year, and depending on their performance, they can receive a two-year, full-ride scholarship to community college.” Alanna Wilcox, who graduated from NIU a couple years ago with her master’s degree in industrial and systems engineering, has been employed with Custom Aluminum for seven years. She spent her afternoons during her senior year at Genoa-Kingston High School learning about various aspects of the business through the work-study program. “I had no intention of doing it because it didn’t exist my freshman year and when I went into high school I wanted to be a chef,” she said. “But doing different projections and drawings in a technical way was something that interested me and some of my sophomore friends did a pilot program and it sounded interesting to me and I always did well in math and science.” Today, Wilcox’s interests have led her to her current role as samples manager at Custom Aluminum. In a short time, she’s also been a computer aided design drafter, engineering supervisor and samples engineer for Custom Aluminum. “I actually ran the work-study program for a few years while I was still in college and taught them about the manufacturing,” she said. “One of the biggest things I remember is I did a survey at the end of the year and the one thing they always said was they were nervous to come into a room of adults so it was nice relating to a young adult.”

www.genoaareachamber.com

1/26/22 1:05 PM

Hunter Busse, a 2017 graduate of Genoa-Kingston, learned about the work-study opportunity during his junior year of high school and was spending time at Custom Aluminum every other day the following year.

the collaborative program between the school and Custom Aluminum.

“I learned a lot and started coming in every day since most of my credits were already done,” he said. “I like doing more of the design stuff and the summer after I graduated from high school I worked on a couple projects working alongside maintenance and different departments and it was really fun. It wasn’t like the normal work we do, it was kind of spontaneous and whatnot.”

That includes by doing the summer internship program, which is a more recent offering. Last year, Custom Aluminum welcomed three participants that worked with the staff in Genoa for full workdays on the floor while learning what Custom Aluminum does on the manufacturing side of business.

Being around others with a similar mindset and a passion for math and sciences has helped people like Busse do something they enjoy alongside others with similar interests. “Math has always come naturally and I’m able to visualize stuff in my head,” he said. “Most people here in our department have a similar mindset. We’re all going for engineering and have that perfectionist mindset.” Wrapping his head around the fact that Custom Aluminum does business with big names might be more challenging than the impressive work he’s been doing there. “For a small town company we deal with the big names and I never would’ve guessed that being in the middle of nowhere Illinois,” he said. “It’s kind of fascinating that we can make a decent-size impact.” And that impact is being made by employees like him who were first introduced to the industry-side of work through

Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce

GenoaBook_2022.indd 13

“We learn by doing,” he said.

It’s a win-win for Custom Aluminum and those participating in the two programs. Manufacturing companies like Custom Aluminum have faced a lack of interest from students in pursuing manufacturing careers and finding skilled workers is a common concern while many kids don’t know what to pursue. By sharing its resources, Custom Aluminum has been able to educate and potentially find new employees or help get them started in related careers. Blessed with a clean, well-lit, climate controlled, safe work environment that features state of the art equipment and machinery, kids are provided with a real-life classroom to learn about working in the manufacturing world. Engineering, math, CNC machining and programming, metrology, welding, robotics, quality statistics, and standard operating procedures and methodologies are among the many subject areas participants can learn more about at Custom Aluminum. Such diverse exposure and professional guidance from staff and expert guests provides them with a real-world understanding as they move forward in pursuing their respective careers.

olks wondering what life was like in the early days of the Kishwaukee Valley are able to travel back in time through the efforts of the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society (KVHS).

Founded by a group of Genoa residents 45 years ago as a not-forprofit corporation with the purpose of bringing together people in the Kishwaukee Valley area who have an interest in local and regional history, the society features its own museum curated with photographs, artifacts and even a 1950’s caboose. “It’s kind of amazing in that it just started with a few volunteers who didn’t really have anything better to do (in 1977),” said Sherry Frankenbach, treasurer for the KVHS. “It depends on the individual, but we have a lot of interesting stuff. Some people are really interested in the old telephones and old telephone equipment while other people are blown away by the horse-drawn hearse. We all have individual tastes.” Located on the west edge of the Genoa business district at 622 Park Ave. on Rt. 72,the KVHS Museum offers free admission and is open from 1-5 p.m. every Wednesday, on the second Sunday of every month from 2-4 p.m. and by appointment.

Facilities that the KVHS feature include the restored depot that was built in 1882, the original Genoa Water Works Building and a caboose. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Depot, which serviced its last train in October 1967, was purchased while on the demolition block. Once acquired, KVHS had it moved from where it had been situated on N. Sycamore St. to Water Works Park on Rt. 72 at the west edge of Genoa in June 1977. Through a lot of effort from many people over the years, the depot is in the shape it is today. Renovations done included a new roof and the addition of a basement as well as a Trane furnace and air conditioner. Since April 1985, an original caboose from around 1950 can be found in front of the museum. At 40 feet long, 15.75” high to the top of the cupola and weighing 25 tons (similar to what a loaded garbage truck or average-sized fire truck weighs), the caboose is impossible to miss. It has undergone a number of restoration projects, including a roof repair in November 2021. Sharing interesting stories about how those that lived and worked while in the caboose are one of the ways KVHS is able to illustrate

When visiting the caboose, guests can imagine what it must’ve been like to be a part of a crew with its two bunks, a wooden deck, icebox, washroom and toilet. Originally heated by a pot-bellied stove, the caboose was lit with kerosene lanterns since it had no electricity. Obviously decades before even the thought of cell phones, caboose occupants had to work much harder than reaching into their back pocket to communicate with the engineer in the locomotive. A control valve allowed such contact. Additionally, the caboose, which is called “Crummy,” has a traditional cupola that the conductor used to see the engine and right-of-way along the tracks. Artifacts of the museum include the oldest hearse in DeKalb County, a 1923 Overland convertible automobile, a working 1926 Chandler Price platen printing press with print tray cabinet for type, farming tools, children’s toys dating back to the 1890’s, blacksmith tools, a massive collection of photos from the 1890’s to the 1960’s of Genoa and Kingston, railroad tools, schedules and equipment, a sizable collection of items from Leich Electric, including early telephones and other equipment, paperwork and tools. In addition, scale-model trains from the collections of Mike Southard, Ron Packard and Robert Hoover are on display in the depot along with a Thompson Piano that was made in Genoa in 1907 and was donated to the museum by Ed Brockman whose uncle Walter Noll was employed by the piano factory. Several research collections are featured in the museum including local genealogy, high school yearbooks and more.
