Welcome to O
n behalf of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to our town. Genoa is an outstanding place to live, work, and grow a business. Whether you’re visiting for the day, looking for a new place to call home, or you’re already a resident of our thriving community, we guarantee you will love our community. Genoa is a quaint little town with a big heart and plenty of opportunities. 2020 was a unique year and the Genoa businesses and community stayed “Cog-nected” and pulled through the pandemic together.
Yes, you read that right, “Cog-nected”. A COG is a wheel or bar with a series of projections on its edge, which transfers motion by engaging with projections on another wheel or bar. You can see their differences, but they all provide the same purpose, to work with one another to move forward. A cog in a wheel is an important element; it keeps a machine running smoothly. If it’s cared for – cleaned, oiled, and polished regularly – it will serve the machine well for years, just like our partnerships with one another. When cared for we all move forward with success. I am honored to have the opportunity to be a COG working together with all businesses and community members. This year we watched our cogs spin as our businesses and community rallied together and remained hopeful. We saw people lifting each other up and spreading kindness as we pushed forward. We adapted our ways and found new ways of gathering, virtually or with safe distances. Events still took place in an adapted way. We have come together when it looked like everything was falling apart. We have overcome. The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce remains “Cog-nected” and is always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow, including space to advertise on the Chamber website, business referrals, monthly networking opportunities, and continuing education. We continue to partner with local government and other organizations to pursue improvements in the overall quality of life for the city, county, and region. Our success in achieving our mission and purpose is due to a collaborative effort from the Chamber Board of Directors, Chamber Ambassadors, City of Genoa, Chamber members, area professionals and community volunteers. Our online business directory and Area Guide are two resources the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce provides to the local community. We continue to encourage you to think local, shop local! By supporting the businesses in our directory, you are reinvesting in your community. To our current Chamber members, thank you for your continued support. For those of you considering relocating your business or opening a new business in Genoa, you will find that becoming a Chamber member is of great value to you. Genoa is thriving, come grow with us! We would love to “Cog-nect” with you!

Alan Browne Chevrolet
Supporting the Community that Supports Us By: D.M. Herra
For decades, Alan Browne Chevrolet made a name for itself throughout the stateline area. Today, thanks to its robust Internet presence, the dealership is known nationwide. “We joke about being the biggest small-town dealer anywhere because we always have a huge inventory,” owner Phil Harris said. “We’ve had people buy from all over the country. We’ve even had buyers in Canada. If there’s a vehicle you want and we don’t have it, we work
Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce
GenoaBook_2021.indd 7
really diligently to locate it and get it here so you can see it.” Harris became the dealership’s owner in 2014, two years after entering into an initial sales agreement with the dealership’s namesake, Alan Browne. “Alan has become an amazing friend. He still comes by the dealership almost every day,” Harris said. “I feel it was a blessing to meet him and have the opportunity to get involved in this community.” Harris’s wife grew up in Genoa, he
said. When the opportunity to buy the dealership arose, it felt like the right thing to do. From Day One, he said, the city welcomed the Harrises with open arms. Many city and business leaders stopped in the first day to introduce themselves. “I love the hometown feel,” Harris said. “Everybody here knows one another or is related to one another or your kids are in school together – we’re all connected. This community comes together and really shines.”

EMBRACING GROWTH Harris entered the auto industry at age 19, when he began selling cars at Jack Wolf in Belvidere. Over the next 13 years, he rose through the ranks at the dealership from salesperson to sales manager to general manager. He spent the next five years in Rockford as the general manager of Bachrodt on State. Then Harris did something unexpected: he took a break from cars. Harris began a digital marketing company, which he ran for about a year before meeting Alan Browne. That experience in online marketing has served the dealership well. Alan Browne Chevrolet has a presence in several online marketplaces as well as operating its own suite of websites. Four staff members are dedicated solely to working on Internet leads. “It was easy to apply what I was doing in my marketing company to developing a strong Internet presence for the dealership,” Harris said. “That’s the reason we have buyers coming to us from all over the U.S.” In just six years between 2014 and 2020, Alan Browne Chevrolet grew from seven employees to about 50, Harris said. At the same time, sales volume grew from $7 million a year to $26 million a year. Harris said his philosophy on growing his workforce is to find good people first, then build a place for them. “Many of the people we hired were customers first. We like to hire good people when we find them, then we find a place for them,” he said. “I love to see kids have every opportunity, so we’ve employed a lot of the younger generation. We give young people internships to give them some experience and get them off to a good start.”
CORVETTE CAPITAL While Alan Browne Chevrolet prides itself on being able to find almost any kind of preowned car, trucks are the dealership’s bread and butter. Harris said he makes sure to keep a variety of new and preowned heavy duty and light duty trucks in stock. Alan Browne is also one of the area’s leading Chevy dealerships in Corvette sales. Over the past three years, Harris said, the dealership has sold more than 60 Corvettes, including 16 of the 2020 models.

COMMUNITY STAPLE As the largest single contributor to the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, Alan Browne Chevrolet is a driver of many of the community’s beloved events. “We would really struggle without that support,” chamber director Krissy Johnson said. “Phil’s done some great things for the community. Even though some of the events that really allow him to shine as a sponsor, like the car show, didn’t happen last year, he still continued his support.” As the corporate investor, Alan Browne Chevrolet receives sponsor recognition at all chamber events. Harris said his favorite local events include the holiday parade, the duck race and the car show.

“Genoa Days is another one of my favorites,” he said. “We usually buy a bunch of ride wristbands to give out at the dealership. That way we can support the fire department and bring some joy to kids at the same time.” Though the pandemic led to the cancelation of last year’s events, Harris said it was important to maintain the dealership’s level of chamber support.

“We’re all a community here and it’s important to support businesses going through a rough time,” he said. “We have such dedicated chamber staff and ambassadors. It’s amazing to watch them work together. In the face of all challenges, they continue to do such amazing things for the community.”
FREE ESTIMATES & UPFRONT PRICING
2020 was a difficult year, Harris said, with supply chains disrupted and consumer confidence shaken. Alan Browne Chevrolet focused its attention on measures to make sure its staff and customers could stay safe and healthy. Harris and his staff make a point of supporting other local businesses at every opportunity. Whether it’s buying from a local business or supporting a local not-for-profit, Harris said he believes in “supporting the community that supports us.”

Crown Exteriors,Inc.
From One-Man Show to One-Stop Shop
By: D.M. Herra
I
f you’re looking to freshen up your home’s exterior, Chad Poegel is your guy.
Poegel, owner of Crown Exteriors, has been approached about expanding his business’s repertoire to include everything from interior painting to decks to landscaping – all suggestions he politely declined. “We do siding, windows, gutters, and roofing,” Poegel said. “There’s plenty to do in our area of expertise. Could we find subcontractors and do other things? I guess we could. But we’ve benefited from keeping things as laser focused as we can on what we do best.” Poegel’s family has lived in the area since 2003. He was working as a superintendent for a union siding company when the housing bubble burst in 2007. “All that company did was new construction,” he said. “By 2008, everything just stopped.” Poegel considered his options. He was a skilled and experienced sider. He had contact
10 GenoaBook_2021.indd 10
information for the best siding companies in the Chicagoland area. And things were looking bleak for his employer.
So he launched his own business. “It started out as just me, by myself, doing repair work,” he recalled. “Nobody had any money in 2008, but I would get calls like, ‘Hey, we got the barbecue too close to the house and burned the siding.’ And I would go out and fix it.”
Today, Crown Exteriors works on new and existing structures. The company installs siding, trim, porch posts, porch ceilings, soffits, fascia, gutters, windows, and roofing – a one-stop exterior shop. “It’s beneficial to be able to offer customers a bigger package. They like having just one company that can handle everything,” Poegel said. “People had been telling me I should do roofs. When your customers tell you what you should offer, you should listen.”
A hard lesson leads to a will to win
In the early days of his business, Poegel was a
one-man enterprise. Most of his projects were repairs, as new home builds were few and far between in the latter part of the 2000s. Occasionally, a builder would hire him for a one-off project siding a new house. In 2009, Poegel got what seemed like it would be a big break. After a hailstorm, a large builder contacted him about replacing aluminum siding on a large number of damaged houses. “I said OK, but I didn’t really vet him as well as I could have,” Poegel admitted. “Once you account for the costs, I was making very little.” As low as the rate was, Poegel figured, it was an opportunity to build the business. Except the payment didn’t follow. “After leading me along, the contractor filed bankruptcy,” Poegel said. “My business was only a year old and I was significantly in the red. At that moment, I said, ‘If I’m going to fail, it’s not going to be because of this person.’” Poegel used this experience to fuel his
www.genoaareachamber.com
2/3/21 2:47 PM
determination to succeed. He began reaching out to every builder he could find. Looking back, he said, it may have been one of the best things that could have happened for the business. “I stepped up my game big time out of sheer competitiveness,” he said. “I wanted to prove I control my own destiny.”
Moving on up
Poegel began connecting with the other builders. About a year later, he landed a project to side 42 new houses for a single developer. “The security of getting 42 houses at once was amazing,” Poegel said. “That was really a launching pad.” Poegel hired more help. He needed people in the field with him, then found he needed staff to stay in the office and handle paperwork.
Continued growth in 2020
Many industries suffered devastating blows from the economic slowdown that came in the wake of last year’s pandemic. Construction and remodeling were not among them. “Every hard time affects some industries more than others, and this particular situation did not slow us down,” Poegel said. “2020 was a year of tremendous growth for us, all things considered.” The pandemic caused many city dwellers to reassess their living situation and build homes in the suburbs. The real estate and construction industries thrived in 2020. With vacations and weekend plans canceled, homeowners found the time and motivation to start on remodeling projects they might otherwise have delayed.
“Though many people lost their jobs, not everyone did. They might have switched to working from home, but their paycheck is still coming in,” Poegel said. “They were unable to go on vacations. They were unable to go to concerts and restaurants. They ended up with extra money, and a lot of them invested it in their homes.”
A community partner
Crown continued to invest in the community amidst the pandemic. They remained a finish line sponsor for the annual duck race. The business also upgraded its Chamber of Commerce membership to the executive level, helping to support businesses that were struggling. They also chipped in with community projects, chamber director Krissy Johnson said. “They redid the barn for the community gardens, distributed 2,000 free masks to the community, and they painted the sleigh for Santa,” she said. They’ve been a great support to the community, and they’re just a tremendous asset to the town.”
SM-CL1851178
Over a dozen years, Crown Exteriors grew from a one-man operation to a business employing 38 people.
“It’s been a fun, fun journey,” Poegel said. “There have been hiccups along the way, but we continue to learn.”

The Warehouse on Park
A Vision Coming Together
By: D.M. Herra Bill and Mary Lloyd have always had vision.
banquets and other gatherings.
Bill Lloyd began his landscaping business, Lloyd Landscaping, in 1994. Eventually, he and his wife, Mary, purchased the property at 662 Park Avenue to turn it into a garden center.
The Warehouse on Park project moved slowly but was making solid progress. The outdoor space was completed first, then a small indoor space. The Lloyds were ready for 2020 to be the year everything came together.
They had a lot of work to do. For years, the lot had literally been used as a trash dump. There were nearly four acres of garbage and overgrown vegetation to clear away. But the Lloyds did it, creating a setting so beautiful brides began approaching them asking to use the site for wedding photos.
FROM GARDEN CENTER TO GARDEN PARTY The Lloyds saw another opportunity. The building on the site had several uses – part of it was the garden center shop, and another part was stocked with salvaged barn wood the business sells. But there was lots of warehouse space with nothing but potential. The vision was ambitious. The outdoor garden center would be configured to provide a garden setting for events. The warehouse would be converted into an indoor event space. It would be an altogether beautiful and unique location to hold weddings,
12 GenoaBook_2021.indd 12
Then COVID-19 hit. Luckily, Lloyd Landscaping was still operating full tilt. Landscaping and garden centers were deemed essential businesses and permitted to stay open during the state lockdowns. As area residents’ vacation plans shrank to backyards, Bill Lloyd found his landscaping and garden center businesses busier than ever. “It’s weird how some businesses were successful during the pandemic and others lost everything,” Bill Lloyd said. “We wouldn’t have been able to make it through 2020 without the landscaping and the garden center.”
MAKING LEMONS INTO LEMONADE As the weather warmed, the Lloyds brainstormed ways they could continue building business for their event space. They landed on
www.genoaareachamber.com
2/3/21 2:47 PM
the idea of outdoor events featuring live music and food trucks. “At first it was just the food trucks. Then we got a few musicians and quickly found there are a lot of musicians around here, and they all wanted to play,” Bill Lloyd said. “We had a really good time, a decent turnout, and we really learned a lot. It was kind of nice to get to learn without jumping right into the big time. It was like a soft opening, except it was a whole year.” While Mary Lloyd had always imagined hosting weddings at the Warehouse on Park, she knew other events would fill in the gaps, she said. The 2020 summer, she said, taught her there is a demand for local music venues. “We sit on almost four acres, so we have plenty of room to do whatever we want,” Bill Lloyd said. “We’re going to expand the patio this spring and set things up so it’s a little more user-friendly to bands.” The Warehouse on Park hosted a Feed the Need music benefit over the summer, an event the Lloyds said they would like to host again. A variety of area bands played and more than $5,000 was raised for a local food pantry. “The Warehouse on Park was amazing during COVID because everything could happen outside,” Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce Director Krissy Johnson said. “We actually held our ambassador luncheons there over the summer because we could social distance and still meet.”
Bill Lloyd said the local chamber of commerce is an “awesome” resource for the business community. “They’ll do anything to help any business,” he said. “This is a good small community, and everybody tries to help each other out.” The Warehouse on Park does its part to support local businesses as well. Local eatery Sib’s Corner Grill has catered events at the space, and the bar serves a variety of locally sourced beverages, including wines produced in Genoa and Maple Park, spirits distilled in DeKalb, and beers from nearly a dozen area breweries. “[Local beverage producers are] all such good people. So passionate about what they do,” Bill Lloyd said. After making it through 2020, the Lloyds are hopeful this is the year The Warehouse on Park comes into its own. “In 2020 we focused on doing events safely,” Mary Lloyd said. “We held things outdoors and spaced everybody. We made people wear masks; our employees all wear masks. We cleaned the heck out of everything. We’re hoping this year things move back to normal and we can host events on a bigger scale.” The Warehouse on Park is available for private events large and small. In between private events, the Lloyds plan to host weekend events open to the public. To see what’s coming up at The Warehouse on Park, check the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce calendar at http://business. genoaareachamber.com/events/calendar.

Upgraded Chamber Members CHAMBER MEMBERS UPGRADE MEMBERSHIPS TO SUPPORT STRUGGLING BUSINESSES By: D.M. Herra The Genoa business community is nothing if not tight knit. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to temporarily shut down or reduce operations in 2020. Some of those allowed to remain open suffered from a drop in business as shoppers cut back spending and hunkered down at home. Besides the disruption to regular business, the pandemic forced the cancelation of community events both the Chamber of Commerce and its members rely on. But not everyone was negatively impacted. Because of the closeness in the Genoa business community, some businesses untouched by the pandemic reached out a helping hand to those struggling. Six local businesses upgraded their membership in the Chamber of Commerce, providing a needed infusion of funds. “These upgraded members invested more money to help out and make sure everybody was covered,” Chamber Director Krissy Johnson said. “The extra financial support from those businesses that were not negatively impacted by the pandemic kept information flowing about any grants or business support coming available.” The support from event sponsors allowed the chamber to come up with some creative alternatives to its usual events. For
example, after the socially distanced Jingle Bell Parade, Santa still visited with children in his house from behind a protective barrier. The new construction and home improvement industries flourished in 2020 as people stuck at home took a fresh look at their living space. The Illinois Realtors Association reported new home sales in 2020 were the strongest in years. Nationwide, hardware stores sold $10 billion more in 2020 than they had in 2019. Not surprisingly, then, half of the Genoa chamber’s upgraded members are in the home industry. Homebuilder By Grainger, roofing and siding company Crown Exteriors, and longtime community pillar Tobinson’s ACE Hardware all stepped up with increased memberships. While restaurants and cafes were fully or partially shut down, OpenDoor Coffee was able to continue serving customers via a food truck model, Johnson said. Retailer Liquor n’ Wine also stepped up its contribution – in the state of Illinois, people continued to buy packaged alcohol to drink at home while bars were shut down. The city of Genoa also did what it could to support the business community in 2020. It upgraded its chamber membership and provided electrostatic sprayers to help businesses clean and sanitize.
