Welcome Hampshire Area to the

O

n behalf of the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to the community! Our Chamber represents three unique villages- each offering a prosperous lifestyle, strong business partners and good neighbors that contribute to a family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

2020 has certainly been a challenging and unprecedented time for business, not only for our member communities of Hampshire, Burlington and Pingree Grove, but for the world as well. To take the helm as Executive Director of the Chamber just a few weeks prior to the Governor’s COVID19-related shelter-in-place order has been both educational and inspirational, as I have watched the community rally behind local businesses and also offer their support to the Chamber in both practical and heartfelt ways. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our society brought immediate changes to the way small businesses operate. Our local businesses have been amazingly responsive- providing curbside pickup, adding delivery services and creating work-from-home solutions for everything from offices, restaurants, stores and even our educational system. As our member businesses have evolved, the Chamber of Commerce has evolved with them, providing webinars on navigating disaster loans, sharing banking resources and serving as a conduit for information and news between local government and business. As your partner in business, the Chamber strives to provide diligent response to your marketing needs. Sharing links on social media, promoting businesses on our website, through email blasts and sharing informative newsletters are just some of the ways our business is keeping up with yours and serving as a vital link to new and repeat customers. I am honored to be able to help spread the word, publicize business specials and share the concerns and struggles of our local businesses – helping them to reach customers and serve as a link to local agencies for news and information. As the Executive Director, I regularly attend village meetings to stay informed on issues that matter to the business community and to serve as a voice for our business partners. This business directory and area guide is also meant to serve as a method for promoting member businesses and the villages we represent. Within these pages, we highlight our member businesses and the community events that add so much value to our everyday lives. Please share this magazine widely and use it to promote our community, our resources and our businesses. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of our member businesses who have made this publication possible through their support and advertising. By supporting the businesses in this directory, you are making an investment in your own local neighborhood, ensuring its continued success and contributing to the vibrant community in which we all live. Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support!

Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch FAMILY FUN FOR EVERYONE By: D.M. HERRA

G

oebbert’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard is always on the lookout for ways to enhance its family-friendly experience. This year, a vintage carousel will make its debut at the agritainment complex.

“It’s a classic piece, and I’m looking forward to seeing it up and running,” said Jake Goebbert, who runs the farm with his parents, Lloyd and Terry. The carousel was built in the 1950s by the Allan Herschell company, which also built the miniature train that runs on a half-mile track around the farm. Herschell was a well-known designer and producer of fairground attractions. His companies produced barrel organs, carousels and amusement park rides from the mid-19th to

8 HampshireChamberBook 2020.indd 8

the mid-20th century. The Allan Herschell Company produced more than 3,000 carved wooden carousels between 1915 and 1970, some of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Goebbert’s carousel was first owned by a playground in Evanston, Goebbert said. From there, it was sold to a zoo in Texas, then a park in Michigan, and then an orchard, also in Michigan. The Goebberts purchased it at auction in 2019. “We were happy to bring it home to Illinois,” Goebbert said. “We didn’t say, ‘We’d like a carousel,’ but we’re always looking for things we can add that both kids and parents will enjoy.”  LOCAL AGRITAINMENT Goebbert’s opened its Hampshire location

in 1985 and added the orchard in 2017. The cost of admission includes access to a variety of wholesome attractions, including a Kiddie Play Land and an Animal Land. Young visitors love the pumpkin-eating “dinosaur” – an excavator with a bucket elaborately decorated to resemble a dinosaur head. The giant slide, jumping pillow and straw mound are also popular. Another new addition this year is a party venue that seats up to 500 guests. Goebbert said the new space is perfect for weddings, reunions or corporate parties. Even as features are added to the farm, some attractions never go out of style. Wagon rides to a pickyour-own pumpkin patch are an autumn mainstay, Goebbert said, as is the giant corn pit and the exotic animals that visit every fall from a small zoo in Wisconsin. “The kinds of animals we have varies from year to year, but there’s always a giraffe,” Goebbert said. There are attractions for older kids and families to enjoy together as well, including pedal karts, a tire mountain and a straw maze. Pig races and the pumpkin cannon provide thrills, and the brave of heart can venture into the haunted

house during the annual Fall Festival.  FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED The family farm traces its roots to 1948, when George Goebbert opened a roadside vegetable stand near the Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights. In 1972, George’s son Jim purchased 40 acres in South Barrington and entered the pumpkin business. He was so successful, in 1979 he decided to make the farm a destination. He commissioned a giant fiberglass jack-o-lantern to sit atop the silo. “Happy Jack” is 18 feet wide, 15 feet tall and makes the farm visible for miles. Jim added the 200-acre Hampshire location in 1985 to host Goebbert’s annual farm festival. The family continues to farm the land in South Barrington, which includes greenhouses, a garden center, and a flower and vegetable market. Jim’s son, Lee, manages the South Barrington business while his son, Lloyd, Jake’s father, operates the pumpkin patch and orchard.  A YEAR IN THE LIFE With a public season only a few months long, Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch spends the entire year building up to it. Over the winter,

h a m p s h i re c h a m b e r. o r g

HampshireChamberBook 2020.indd 9

Jake Goebbert said, the family plans the next year – scheduling maintenance, planning events and brainstorming attractions to add or adapt. At the flower farm, plants are growing even through the cold of an Illinois winter. The greenhouse opens Feb. 1, Goebbert said, with flowers to sell. Spring is as unpredictable for the Goebberts as it is for all farmers, dependent on the fickle Midwest weather. As soon as it possible, planting begins, with the goal of opening the South Barrington garden center in May.

 PLAN YOUR VISIT Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard opens Labor Day weekend at 42W813 Reinking Road in Pingree Grove. For information on pricing, events, and attractions, visit goebbertspumpkinpatch.com. Gobbert’s Farm and Garden Center opens in April at 40 W. Higgins Road in South Barrington. For information about the garden center, farm market or attractions, visit goebbertsgardencenter.com.

June, Goebbert said, is the only quiet month, as crops grow and ripen. In July and August, fields are harvested to supply the vegetable stands, and the family is gearing up for the fall. The pumpkin farm opens Labor Day weekend, and over the ensuing weeks thousands of visitors flock to Reinking Road for what has become a treasured family tradition. While many pumpkin patches shut down after Halloween, Goebberts extends its season a few more months with a holiday light show that begins Thanksgiving weekend. Then the process begins all over.

Burlington T

he Village of Burlington was incorporated in 1906 and is a village with a strong sense of community. Burlington marked its beginnings with a tavern in 1840, a post office in 1846, a general store in 1847 and finally incorporated in 1906. On the growth horizon are many opportunities for Burlington. Burlington is a quaint, rural community interested in economic development and has a positive image for growth while maintaining the “smalltown” character. It is home to 26 businesses and 618 residents. Improvements to the Village of Burlington have progressed from the alignment of Plank Road and its first stop light, the resurfacing of Main Street, and total reconditioning of the water tower. Growth is imminent and the Village of Burlington is preparing for all potential growth and looking forward to opportunities to expand while maintaining its small town character.

History of Hampshire Originally known as Henpeck, the Village of Hampshire began when Zenas Allen of Vermont became its first settler in 1836. From 1837 to 1845 Henpeck existed along the Chicago – Galena Stagecoach Trial at Old State (Route 20), Big Timber, and Brier Hill Roads. Hampshire Township was organized in 1845, and the village’s name was changed to Hampshire. In 1876, the village relocated so that it could be along the line. Hampshire was officially incorporated that same year with Samuel Rowell as its first village president. In 1893, the farming community grew to become the second largest milk producing and shipping station in Illinois. Residents have served in the civil war, and during World War II, Hampshire was chosen for a prisoner of war camp for 250 German soldiers who worked at the Inderrieden Canning Company.

Buck Bros.

WHERE TRENDS MEET TRADITION By: D.M. HERRA

A

mbrose Seyller has seen a lot of change in the 40-plus years he’s been selling tractors at Buck Bros. Inc. But as much as things change, they also stay the same. “We have a lot of multi-generational customers,” said Seyller, who co-owns Buck Bros., with his brother John. “We’ve got farmers who were customers when I started here in 1979, and they still come in, but now it’s their kids and grandkids who are the primary operators.”

 FAMILY BUSINESS Buck Bros. began in Huntley in 1977. In 1979, founder John Buck moved the tractor dealership to Hampshire. That’s when Seyller, who grew up on a dairy farm just outside Hampshire, started working for the company. Seyller took on ownership of the business after Buck died in 2001. By then, he and his brother Paul had already opened their own dealership,

16 HampshireChamberBook 2020.indd 16

River Valley Turf, in the Quad Cities. Over the next seven years, the Seyllers would build a small empire of agricultural dealerships – two under the River Valley banner and four under Buck Bros. Two of the dealerships sell agricultural equipment and all six dealerships sell new and used agriculture tractors under 100 h.p. and outdoor power equipment, plus parts and accessories. “We’re in a good spot now. We’ve got no expansion plans,” Seyller said. “We’re happy to still be part of this community.” “We are grateful to be part of the communities our stores are located in.” Community spirit, Seyller said, is crucial to a business’s long-term success. He attributes much of the customer loyalty Buck Bros. enjoys to the efforts of a caring staff, many of whom have been with the company for 30 years or more.

Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce

“Even though we’ve grown, we’re still a family business,” Seyller said. “A lot of our success and sustainability comes from our good employees and from caring about this community.”  KEEPING UP WITH THE TIMES If community spirit is the first half of the success equation, the second half must be keeping up with the community’s trends. As Hampshire has grown over the last four decades, Buck Bros. has shifted its inventory from primarily farm implements to what is today a roughly 50/50 split between agricultural equipment and smaller units used in landscaping. “Agricultural equipment is still a very large essential part of our business but as the town evolved, and we evolved with it to selling fewer tractors and more lawnmowers,” Seyller said. “We do a lot of business with what we call ‘turf and utility’ tools for homeowners, landscapers and government agencies like townships and parks.” Seyller said the latest trend he has his finger on is an increased sale in commercial lawnmowers to small landscaping businesses. As the popularity of large home lots has waned, many homeowners who once mowed their own lawns are now outsourcing their lawn care, he said. When it comes to agricultural implements,

trends are driven by technology. The modern American farm is a high-tech operation, requiring high-tech equipment. Today’s tractors, combines and other motorized implements are equipped with auto-steer, Seyller said, so that they practically drive themselves. The vehicles are not fully autonomous – yet – but they will follow a prescribed pattern of plotted lines without the operator ever having to correct their course. Farmers and gardeners both know soil conditions play a major role in the success or failure of a crop. Modern implements, Seyller said, can read soil and crop conditions and adjust the rate of planting or spraying as they move. “It doesn’t just follow what you programmed for the whole field,” he said. “It constantly reads the soil and crop conditions and it could be adjusting foot by foot based on what it finds. Technology has become a huge part of agricultural equipment.” With the explosion in technology, Buck Bros. service department has become increasingly valuable. Even for the mechanically inclined, repairing a tractor with an advanced on-board computer is too complex a task for the average do-it-yourselfer. Buck Bros. service technicians are trained and certified by John Deere.

HAMPSHIRE’S HAMPSHIRE S GATHERING PLACE By: D.M. HERRA

fter 30 years as an accountant, Michelle Bunkowske was ready to get out from behind a desk and back in front of people.

Hampshire,” said Michelle, a longtime Hampshire resident. “The people here are just wonderful. It’s such a great community, you can’t help but want to be part of it.”

Michelle had once worked in restaurants, and when she left accounting, she knew that’s where she was headed again. Michelle met Kristie Perez in 2003 while the two were bartenders. Kristie had worked in restaurants since she was 15 and dreamed of opening one of her own. During their 10 years bartending together, the women daydreamed of going into business together.

Michelle and Kristie decided their restaurant would serve all-American fare. They developed a menu alongside Chef Ciro Garcia including steak, fried fish, sandwiches and pasta. Relationships with local farmers, growers and vendors mean fresh, locally sourced ingredients are available.

In 2017, the owners of The Corkshire Pub in Hampshire retired and put the restaurant up for sale. The timing, the women said, was perfect – and Copper Barrel on State was born. “We were always hoping to stay in

18 HampshireChamberBook 2020.indd 18

To set Copper Barrel apart from other local eateries, they brought in a smoker and Kristie’s father, Andy Stover, trained the staff in how to use it to smoke brisket, pork, poultry, sausage and salmon. The restaurant has become known among locals for its smokehouse menu, Kristie said. The only thing more popular might be Kristie’s famous cornbread.

Before the restaurant could open, Michelle and Kristie had to put their stamp on the building. Michelle’s fiancé, Randy Stevenson, owner of Embassy Construction, and his team did the construction build out and assisted with the decor. They removed The Corkshire Pub’s castlethemed décor and replaced it with a rustic décor featuring raw timbers and stone accents. The restaurant’s look influenced another decision that had to be made – its name. The large, barrel-themed display provided the first dose of inspiration.

“We wanted the name to have ‘barrel’ in it because we knew we wanted to use barrels in our décor,” Kristie said. “I must have had hundreds of different ‘barrel’ names on a list.” While shopping for décor, Michelle said both women found themselves drawn to copper-colored accents. In the end, they combined the two elements to create Copper Barrel’s name. Staffing was an easier challenge for the restaurant veterans. Kristie reached out to her brother, Kevin Stover, an experienced restaurant manager with a history of launching locations for a national chain, to manage the business. They also hired longtime Corkshire Pub employee, Sarah Carlson, to give the location some continuity. Ciro Garcia previously worked at The Lodge on 64, another restaurant Kristie owns with her husband. At the end of the day, while Michelle and Kristie hope people enjoy the menu and the décor, what they really want Copper Barrel known for is its family-friendly atmosphere. “We want to be known as Hampshire’s gathering place,” Michelle said. “We want people to come hang out with us.” Copper Barrel features regular community events, including live music, trivia nights, music bingo, painting parties and more. “We want to be the go-to place to take a date, to take your family to dinner, or to meet up with friends and still be close to home,” Kristie said.  COPPER BARREL ON STATE 172 S. Pingree Grove T

he Village of Pingree Grove is a Place to Grow! The Village is incredibly proud to continue in its position as the fastest growing community in the state, with a wide variety of housing styles to meet all interests. We are working on a daily basis to expand the range of commercial offerings and shopping available to our residents, and with the growing population, we look forward to the establishment of a major commercial corridor along Route 47. We continue to benefit from 100% occupancy in our commercial and industrial facilities, and the past year has seen a number of new businesses open in the Village, as well as major expansions to existing industries. The Village’s streamlined developmentreview process ensures our status as a business-friendly community. The Village’s municipal property tax rates are the lowest of any municipality that levies taxes in the region, ensuring that our business partners receive the best possible return on their investment.

The Village is lead by Village President Steve Wiedmeyer and the Village Board of Trustees comprised of Charles Pearson, Patricia Dulkoski, Amber Kubiak, Joseph Hirschbein, Luke Hall and Raúl Lemus. Village Manager Dean Frieders leads the professional management team for the Village, comprised of Finance Director Karen Plaza, Police Chief Shawn Beane, and Public Works Director Pat Doherty. The Village works very diligently to run efficient and productive operations, and to provide beautiful neighborhood and public amenities and the highest quality public services possible. Heading into a new fiscal year, the Village is working to ensure that all of its operations are sustainably funded and operated in accordance with the best management practices for excellent governance. The Village is also highly engaged in the region, regularly working with state and federal legislators to ensure that our residents benefit from available programming and opportunities. In 2019, the Village completed its Municipal Center at 555 Reinking Road, which consolidated our Public Works and Administration services on one shared campus with our Police Department and Utility facilities. This incredibly cost-effective facility was built on-time and on-budget, and allows our residents to have one-stop convenience for all of their Village interaction. This new facility has already been embraced by the community, and in just the first few months of being open, has already hosted a memorial service for a fallen Illinois State Police Trooper, and also the Village’s annual Holiday Tree Lighting. The Village also initiated our #PingreeGrows project, which is a forward-looking project to plan for the next several decades of our utility plant operations. This project will enable the Village to continue its responsible, demandbased growth practices. The Village is very active in engaging the community through its website www. pingreegrove.org, as well as through its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ PingreeGroveIL. We look forward to another great year of growth for our community— join us online and stay engaged!

SERVPRO

Restoring peace of mind By: D.M. HERRA

T

he staff of SERVPRO of Elgin/Northwest Kane County takes care of people when they are experiencing what may be the worst time of their lives.

When a family experiences a flood or fire, water damage and fire restoration specialists from SERVPRO are there to offer a helping hand and an understanding attitude. “We’re definitely very invested in the community,” manager Kelly Meloy said. “Often, the reason we’re coming to your home is because something very upsetting or uprooting has happened. It’s important you can trust us and feel comfortable with our service.” The local franchise also performs mold remediation and deep cleaning of what Meloy called “soft and hard content.” “If you took your house and turned it upside down, anything that falls out is content,” she explained. Staff was kept very busy this spring deep cleaning commercial buildings during the coronavirus pandemic. The company follows sanitizing standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has years of experience in biohazard cleanup. Many cleaning services clean carpets, upholstery, blinds and floors. SERVPRO goes beyond, offering odor removal, vandalism cleanup, air duct cleaning – even biohazard and sewage cleanup. The idea of a comprehensive cleaning service is often comforting to people who have suffered a fire, flood, or other catastrophic event, Meloy said. SERVPRO can clean all or nearly all of the items in the home. It even provides some rebuilding services to repair structural damage. “It’s easier to deal with just one company rather than someone taking care of your clothes, someone else taking care of your furniture, and someone else fixing the structure,” she said. Owners George and Marg Jackowiec purchased their SERVPRO franchise in 2003, making it one of the oldest franchises in the Chicagoland area. SERVPRO of Elgin/Northwest Kane County serves the communities of Elgin, South

SERVPRO is deeply rooted in community service, participating in such civic groups as the Hampshire, Elgin, and Northern Kane County chambers of commerce, the Elgin Rotary, the Elgin Boys and Girls Club and the Community Crisis Center. Community involvement helps the public identify the people behind the company, Meloy said.

www.FirstAmBank.com

“It puts a name to a face and provides some understanding of who we are,” she said. “Our staff have a knack for helping people. That’s really what we do; we help people.” SERVPRO began in California in 1967. It began as a painting business, but owners Ted and Doris Isaacson quickly shifted their focus to cleaning and restoration. The Isaacsons sold their first franchise in 1969; within 20 years there were more than 600 locally owned businesses bearing the SERVPRO banner.

SERVPRO® Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration™

Today, there are more than 1,700 SERVPRO franchises, responding to customer calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The company’s tagline is “like it never even happened,” and that is an ethos Meloy said local employees take to heart.

“Each of our employees is dedicated to helping homeowners and business owners restore their space,” she said. “We want to give people peace of mind.”
