Business Development Commission
H
ampshire has created a Business Development Commission to focus on attracting new businesses and development to the area.
Six local business people form the Business Development Commission. Together with their unique skills and experience, they will help the area thrive and assist with marketing the village to developers and business owners. Collectively they have experience in creating business parks, commercial developments, residential developments, and they have worked with other cities regarding business attraction, marketing, accounting, and tax issues. “It’s a very impressive, powerful group when you get them all into the same room,” said Village President, Jeff Magnussen. “There’s a lot of energy. It’s going to be fun to work with [them].”

of I-90, is often referred to as the “golden corridor” because of all the Fortune 500 companies, offices, medical, and entertainment centers that line a long stretch of the highway, from the Chicago suburbs all the way to Rockford. Hampshire’s golden corridor interchange is I-90 at U.S. 20, where there are several industrial parks and businesses, in addition to the truck stops, gas stations, and restaurants. Some of the businesses located near the interchange are Elgiloy Specialty Metals, Buckhead Beef, and March Industries. The addition of Love’s Travel Stop to the golden corridor is just one more signal that Hampshire is not only growing, but becoming a very desirable place for large companies and local shops. Increasing the number of businesses at the interchange means more revenue for the village from the motor fuel tax. A large portion of the tax will help pay for the repaving of Widmayer Road, as well as other much-needed road repairs in the village, including updating streets, curbs, and sidewalks. The amount of tax revenue generated from the interchange is significant.
10
The Village believes that the area would be a perfect location for a large distribution center or transportation hub, and said there is still plenty of land near the interchange where such a business could be built. Several new businesses opened up in the village in 2016, and almost 120 residential building permits were issued last year. The residents who love the small-town feel of Hampshire don’t need to worry about all of the growth changing the community. The Commission feels that they will still be a small country village with their friendly charm. But, now they will have additional revenue to support the village operations, and more support from businesses will lessen the tax burden on our residents.

Hampshire HIgh PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE
I
BY: STEPHEN HABERKORN
In addition to preparing students for academic success at some of the top universities in the country, teachers at Hampshire High School are giving students an early start on their careers by providing real-world experiences in a wide variety of vocations.
District 300 recently installed Career Pathways, designed to provide high school students with real world knowledge, experience, and the skills necessary to thrive in college classrooms and to compete for 21st-century careers. Â Career Pathways provide a sequence of recommended courses and often an opportunity for internships with local businesses. Many also offer dual-credit courses through their partnership with Elgin Community College. The four career pathways offered at Hampshire High School are Advanced Manufacturing, Early Childhood Development, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Welding. The manufacturing and welding programs at Hampshire High School are the only ones in the district. According to the District 300 website, about one-third of all students in the district either join the military or enter the work force within one year after graduating high school. Hampshire High School Career Tech Education programs are divided among three departments: Business, Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) and Industrial Technology.
Business Department
Students in the Business Department at Hampshire High School learn how to budget and invest their money, manage their time, and explore career options within their selected field. They also learn entrepreneurship. During their Freshmen or Sophomore years, students in the Intro to Business class participate in a Business Plan Presentation activity similar to the popular TV show Shark Tank. They have three minutes to pitch a business plan that they have researched to a member of the local business community, followed by three minutes of questions. The business owner/capitalist then decides how much of their pretend money they will invest, up to $300

per person, and writes a check to the student. The students rotate and eventually meeting with each business professional and total up their venture capital money at the end of class. The Intro to Business classes have been doing the Business Plan Presentation activity for about six years now and students have found it helpful in a variety of ways. In Robert Beringer’s Personal Financial Concepts class, students take aptitude tests to find out their skills and interests and do “career cruising” to align their test results with a plethora of possible jobs. His students have a wide-variety of career interests: doctors, nurses, accounting and finance, and a lot of the trades such as building, manufacturing, and automotive. For their final exam, students plan out the next 5-10 years of their lives based upon their career goals. They also do small presentations on various careers so that students can learn what else is out there. Beringer owes his interest in business to his parents’ owning a White Hen Pantry. “I saw all aspects of my parents’ business. I knew I wanted to go into entrepreneurship or education, so I got the best of both worlds,” said Beringer.
Cooperative Education Program
The Hampshire High School Business Department also works with local businesses through their Cooperative Education Program to place students in jobs. This year they have nineteen students, and the program goes across all three high schools in the district. Students either work in an office, retail, or restaurant setting. Students get a credit for the classroom work and they also get credit for the on-the-job experience. The program accommodates both paid and un-paid positions, according to the employer’s specifications. Many of the students continue in their jobs after the class ends. Once her students begin working, their teacher Ms. Amy Lutes visits them on the job. She tracks her students’ performance to find out how she can help develop their individual skills and characteristics. She also solicits feedback from employers regarding any curriculum changes she should consider based upon business trends and students’ knowledge deficits. Many times, employers will ask Lutes to send them someone who will
h a m p s h i re c h a m b e r. o rg
be staying local for college, so they can possibly work with them longterm. One such request that Lutes was recently able to fulfill came from Hampshire Pharmacy owner, Parag Maniar. “Parag is just an unbelievable employer. He really teaches the whole student—not just how to be a good pharmacist, but how to search a career, how to save money, how to start a business, what great customer service looks like. Students learn a ton from him,” said Lutes. According to Lutes, one of the primary focuses of Career and Technical Education is helping students expand a job outward to learn about all of the career possibilities that exist within a field of interest.
Family and Consumer Sciences Department (FACS)
In the Family and Consumer Sciences department, students learn basic life skills like cooking and caring for children; and some even end up going into careers in those areas. In the childcare classes, they learn about children’s physical, mental, and emotional development. They practice caring for robotic simulated babies for their Intro to Childcare classes. Later, they go to Gary D. Wright Elementary School and spend time in the classrooms, working one-on-one with younger children. In Childcare 3 they work on developing skills to be a teacher: lesson planning, reading to kids, and doing math activities in the classroom. They also discuss other careers in the field, such as counselors, pre-school workers, and nurses. The culinary arts classes have four different levels, starting with the basics of cooking and culminating in getting to run a restaurant at the high school. They bring in outside speakers and go on field trips, such as to the student-run restaurant at Northern Illinois University. They discuss culinary arts schools like Kendall College in Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Art. They also promote SkillsUSA, where students can enter competitions for cooking and baking. For students choosing a career in the culinary arts, options include hands-on cooking experience like a chef or sous-chef or hospitality administration. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for employment opportunities for chefs and head cooks.
15
Industrial Technology Department
The Industrial Technology department at Hampshire High School includes programs in Woodshop, Welding, Automotive Technology, Manufacturing, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD). Each program has three levels. There are four Industrial Technology teachers, who are certified to teach all areas, although they each have their area of specialty. In all of the industrial technology programs except woodshop, students go three years at Hampshire High School and one year at Elgin Community College. During their last year, they attend Hampshire High School in the morning and ECC in the afternoon. In some cases, they can take courses at Hampshire High School and get credit at ECC, and some of the courses are dual credit.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
The CAD lab is the design room for the Industrial Technology department. Along with the three levels of regular CAD classes, woodshop, welding, and manufacturing classes also use the lab to create their designs. In addition to CAD software, the lab also contains five 3D printers that use ABS plastic to manufacture whatever the students design in the lab. With the 3D printers, students began making machine parts as a teaching tool. They print practical items like whistles for administrators and coffee cups. Then they move on to doing reverse engineering to reproduce parts for a refrigerator and a box fan that they are given. Some students also designe and produce more creative things like superhero figures. Next, Mr. Jakubowski hopes to have his students complete a group project of constructing a hydraulic arm from individual parts that each student will create using the 3D printer. By offering this array of classes, Hampshire High School is giving their students a head start to see what types of careers they may enjoy. This also helps to ensure they have every opportunity to be prepared for their future.

Fenzel Motor Sales
75 Years in Business
O
By: Stephen Haberkorn n November 1st of 2017, Fenzel Motor Sales in Hampshire will celebrate 75 years in business. In order to remain in
existence for that long, the dealership has had to survive wars, recessions, corporate downturns, health issues, and even a fire. The story of Fenzel Motor Sales is about service from beginning to end.
It begins with the young John Fenzel Sr. from Tefft, Indiana graduating from the aviation program at Purdue University and serving his country in France during World War I. Because there were no planes where he was sent in France, Fenzel was assigned to drive a truck and became adept at fixing vehicles. When he returned to the United States Fenzel helped his mother with the family farm until she died. In the late 1920’s he moved to Chicago and became an electrician with Hupmobile and Buick. He was given the Buick franchise for the near South Side of Chicago. Fenzel

ran the Buick service center at 24th and Indiana, near where McCormick Place now stands. He had seventeen mechanics working for him and their clientele included Al Capone and the owners of the Chicago White Sox, the Comiskey family. In 1937, Fenzel Sr. developed lead poisoning and his health declined. Not one to take a setback lying down, Fenzel was able to purchase a Ford dealership in Burlington and moved there in 1939. Living out in the country, his health improved. Fenzel’s dealership in Burlington quickly became one of the bigger

Ford truck dealers in the area, however all inventory was lost upon the onset of World War II. Conveniently, that’s when the Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Hampshire became available. The elder Fenzel purchased the dealership from W.C. “High Pockets” Voight on November 1, 1942 and he and his family moved into the apartment above the showroom. The original building at the time, which was constructed in 1937, housed a two-car showroom. Unfortunately, there were no cars to sell

himself included, and they did a lot of repair work to stay afloat. After World War II ended, they were able to sell cars again and the dealership prospered along with the rest of the town. Meanwhile, Fenzel Jr. graduated from Marmion Academy in Aurora in 1950, where he was all-state in football. He earned a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, where he majored in business and was the leader of their R.O.T.C. unit. During his junior year, he volunteered his group to go to Korea. They were there for two months at the end of the war, doing scouting and patrolling and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. After finishing at Johns Hopkins, Fenzel Jr. got sent off to Germany, completing a total of three years of service in the Army.

In 1957, Fenzel Jr. got a job with Commonwealth Edison, where he trained to be a commercial engineer, however in 1961 he jumped at the opportunity to get back into the auto industry. He was hired as a district manager with Chrysler’s Dodge Division. While working for the Chrysler Corporation he was elected district manager of the year for the entire United States. In 1971, while working as an assistant regional manager for Chrysler in Denver, Colorado, he felt the need to go back to Hampshire to assist his father. Six months following his return,

his father fell down and became crippled; Fenzel Jr. found himself at the helm of the dealership. In the mid-70s, when Chrysler was losing a lot of dealers in the area, Fenzel Motors added Dodge trucks and cars to their inventory and in 1984 when minivans were unveiled, Fenzel Motors began selling the popular Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler minivans in Hampshire. In the winter of ’78-’79, Fenzel Jr. was working in the service department, when a man reported his Ford station wagon had stalled at Allen and Harmony Roads. The man’s wife and two kids were still in the vehicle and he had walked into town to get help after a Ford dealership and a service station wouldn’t assist him. Fenzel Jr. was able to tow him in through the blizzard and get his car running again. It turned out that the man he helped was the Chief Purchasing Agent for Illinois Bell, who also knew the purchasing agent for Northern Illinois Gas. He was so grateful that he started sending business to Fenzel Motors. “Other guys were going broke, but I was selling cars here like crazy,” said Fenzel Jr. Because of this gesture, Fenzel Motors began to sell 300-400 cars a year. Following the death of Fenzel Sr. and his wife, Fenzel Jr. bought out his three sisters and became the sole owner of Fenzel Motor Sales. In 1993, Jeep vehicles were added to the inventory and Fenzel Motors became one of only two dealerships in the state of Illinois that had the entire line-up of Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge cars, Dodge trucks, and

Jeep vehicles. In 2003, upon acquiring the store from the Oliver Farm Equipment dealer and a garage that was originally built by German POW’s during World War II, Fenzel Motors expanded across the street. According to Fenzel Jr., they have benefited by having Sun City near them, because “a lot of the old-timers are dyed-in-the-wool Chrysler owners.” Fenzel Motor Sales is always at the top of their field in service and sales representation. Out of nearly 100 dealerships in their group, they have recently finished #1 in customer service advocacy. Their territory has expanded and they’ve had some success with direct mailings and newspaper advertising, but their most effective marketing tool is still word of mouth.

“You’re dealing with people instead of a corporation,” said long-time customer Mary Morris of Hampshire. “I like the oldfashioned atmosphere and the community it creates.” Fenzel Jr. said that their philosophy of business is simply to treat

others like you would want to be treated yourself. “We realize that it’s one heck of a big investment when someone buys a car, be it new or used,” Fenzel Jr. said. “You’ve got to respect it and take care of it.” Over the years, the Chrysler Corporation has offered to buy the dealership and have tried to get them to relocate to Huntley, but Fenzel Jr. doesn’t want to leave. “It’s been quite a ride; I’ve seen it all,” said Fenzel Jr., who will turn 85 in September. “This town has been very good to us and I love it. They’ve stuck by us. If it weren’t for the people we wouldn’t be here. I owe them.”

ig things are happening at the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, as the organization continues to grow and find ways to engage the community in fun activities and connect residents with local businesses.
The organization has seen tremendous growth over the past 18 months, with membership increasing from 99 members two years ago to 140 members from areas surrounding Hampshire. Members range from small, independently owned businesses to large corporations. Loree Hendry, past executive director of the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, said there are many advantages and opportunities for businesses that join the Chamber.
“If I’m a new business that doesn’t have a lot of money for advertising, I have to think of low-cost ways to grow, and the Chamber is an amazing way to go,” she said. “People are more likely to do business with them. We help small businesses grow, we bring in speakers at our monthly meetings to help educate small businesses, we host several networking events with other businesses as well as with residents, and we offer many sponsorship opportunities which give a higher level of visibility.” In addition to Hampshire, businesses from Burlington, Pingree Grove, Sycamore, Huntley, Algonquin, and surrounding areas round out the Chamber’s growing membership. Chamber sponsorships have increased 75 percent in the past few years, which means added revenue and an increased marketing budget for the Chamber. With the increase in sponsorships and a higher marketing budget, both the businesses and the Chamber itself receive even more exposure at events and from Chamber communications. Hendry said the Chamber is very excited about the number of members that have stepped up to the sponsorship level to get more visibility in the community.

“Wherever we go, we display our sponsors’ names and logos on our social media pages, website, and weekly e-newsletters,” she said. “It’s top-of-mind awareness. The more someone sees a name or logo, the more they think of it. When someone needs a product or service, they will remember that they have seen the names and logos of our sponsors. That’s what marketing is, awareness.” Josh Austin, Vice President, said because Hampshire is a smaller community, it might not have every type of business to service all of Hampshire’s residents’ needs, but with members from the surrounding communities, the Chamber has no shortage of options to help connect residents and other businesses with partners who can assist them. “We try to be a front door to the community. We want people to come to us if they want to find a local business,” he said. “Our goal is to help grow the commercial and industrial side of Hampshire as much as possible, and keep the business community in touch with the residential community. We’re the voice for local businesses. We’re here for people who want to network and grow their business.”
The Chamber has a very visible presence online and in social media, which is just one more benefit it offers its members. People regularly visit its Facebook page, which features information about local businesses, as well as local events. While it regularly holds ribbon cutting ceremonies for new businesses, some of the annual events that the Chamber sponsors include the Home and Business Expo, Cruisin’ into Summer Car Show and Fun Fair, the seasonal Farmers’ and Outdoor Market, the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing, and Santa Comes to Hampshire. Information on the various events can be found on the Chamber’s website, the Chamber’s Facebook page, and around town at most of the local businesses.

Chamber memberships and sponsorships aren’t the only things that are growing in Hampshire. More businesses continue to move to the area. Two businesses, Shine Salon and Dry Bar and Love’s Travel Stop are scheduled to open this year, and several strip malls are being built in and around town. “There’s so much growth here, so many new homes, and we want to bring in new businesses to support our growing population,” Hendry explained. “We have a small-town feel, but residents still have everything that they need at their fingertips, from restaurants and stores, to any number of service industry businesses. We have the ability to help our residents find everything they need.”
