WHAT IS STARVED ROCK STATE PARK?
As Illinois' most popular state park, and one of the best nature destinations in the Midwest, Starved Rock's notoriety is well earned. Featuring 18 beautiful canyons, a massive selection of trails for all levels of experience, panoramic views of the Illinois River and a historic lodge and dining hall, Starved Rock State Park is 2,600 acres of natural splendor.
Steeped in Native American history and jam-packed with botanical wonders, this is the perfect destination to take the whole family on an outdoor adventure. Consider planning a trip for Fall when the tree’s leaves have turned brilliant shades of orange and red or during the Winter when ice climbers scale the park’s frozen waterfalls.
During the Spring and Summer, beautiful rain-contingent waterfalls can be found in popular spots like St. Louis, French, Wildcat, Ottawa and Kaskaskia Canyons. Fourteen of Starved Rock's eighteen canyons produce waterfalls at some point during the year, so you never know when you might encounter one.
While swimming, wading and rock climbing are not allowed in the park, guests are treated to over 13 expansive miles of gorgeous tree-lined trails. Be sure to take out what you bring in and leave no trace during your visit.
Looking for a really serene trip to this legendary State Park? Consider making a midweek day trip to Starved Rock. You’ll encounter fewer hikers, convenient parking options and plenty of relaxing nature sounds.

Guests looking for fun can play (and stay) at the city’s two casino-hotels, Harrah’s Hotel and Casino and Hollywood
Casino and Hotel - both home to some of the Midwest’s best electronic games and live tables.
Start your next day bright and early at a scenic nature area or public park, like Rock Run Preserve or the Pilcher Park Nature Center, then tour The Route 66 Welcome Center and Joliet Area Historical Museumhome to an expansive selection of Route 66 memorabilia and fun photo-ops. From there, you can explore the city’s growing selection of downtown boutiques, like Dragon’s Den collectibles store or The Juncture vintage clothing.

Illinois is the nation's most populous inland state. Its successful growth is due in large part to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, a revolutionary development that linked the Great Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.
The I&M Canal was vital to the development of the great City of Chicago and to the economic development of the Midwest; the Canal also fostered the growth of the small settlement that became the City of Lockport. The beautiful Des Plaines River Valley was a portage site for the Des Plaines River for the Miami and Potawatomi, and famed explorers Joliet and Marquette traversed the region on their journeys.
