Have you been tested? Submitted by KSB
Have you had your annual eye exam? Have you been to the dentist for your routine teeth cleaning? These questions can easily be answered with a YES, as they are routine visits to your specialized care providers typically scheduled without thought or hesitation. Now let me ask… have you had your hearing evaluated? For most of you the answer is, NO; however, comprehensive hearing evaluations are quick and painless. Here are some things to consider when deciding if this should be added to your routine check-ups. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, more than 48 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss. One out of three of those Americans are over the age of 65. And people with hearing loss over the age of 60 are at a significantly
3
higher risk of developing dementia Therefore, at KSB Hospital Audiology, we recommend a baseline audiological evaluation by age 60 or earlier if you have noticed a decrease in your hearing sensitivity or have health factors that attribute to hearing loss such as aging, noise exposure, heredity, and/or diabetes. If you have difficulty following conversations, understanding television, or have to ask people to repeat themselves, you may be experiencing hearing loss. At KSB Hospital Audiology we offer an array of diagnostic tests and services to meet your hearing healthcare needs. Comprehensive hearing evaluations are performed by a Doctor of Audiology to identify your type and degree of hearing loss. Hearing aid consultations and demonstrations are offered so that you feel knowledgeable and comfortable when making the important decision to go forward with hearing aid technology. Balance disorders can also be tested and often treated and are especially prevalent in the aging population. In addition, we collaborate and coordinate care with your primary care physician and other
specialists like Ear, Nose and Throat and Physical Therapy to give the most well rounded patient care and experience. Research by the National Council on Aging reported that subjects with untreated hearing loss lived with more negativity in relationships, suffered more depression and isolation, pretended to understand what they didn’t hear, and were accused of “only hearing what they want to hear”. Don’t let this be you or someone you know! Early identification, monitoring, and treatment of hearing loss can allow you to continue to hear and communicate in the world around you and we are here to help make that a reality. “Helping bring new life into this world is a pretty amazing feeling. Everyone here works together to make every mother’s experience the best it can be, because that sticks with a woman. As an obstetrics nurse, living and working here means sometimes mothers stop me out in the community. They remember I was there at their baby’s birth. It’s extremely fulfilling to know you’re such a profound part of someone’s experience. I appreciate the sense of community we have here. Being born and raised here in Sterling, it just always made sense for me to work at CGH. I like that the hospital leadership also lives here and feels a commitment to keeping jobs and quality health care local.”

In Whiteside County, one in three adults experiences some behavioral health issue. Those issues could range from anxiety and depression to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Whiteside County Community Health Clinic (WCCHC) has expanded its behavioral health program to help meet the needs of the community. The behavioral health department provides support services to persons experiencing problems related to emotional and mental illness, with or without a co-occurring drug or alcohol addiction. Besides behavioral health therapy, there are a number of self-help approaches like proper exercise, nutrition, stress reduction activities, and journaling. For individuals who need additional help,
the Community Health Clinic has therapists and a mental health nurse practitioner. The WCCHC offers many group sessions on multiple days throughout the week. On every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the WCCHC offers a group session called E.S.H. (experi-
ence, strength, and hope). The Tuesday group focusses on life-skills, while the Wednesday group focuses on recovery and coping. There is also a grandparents group that meets on every 3rd Tuesday of the month, which is a support system for grandparents that are currently raising their grandchildren. Despite the ongoing efforts to study cancer and cancer treatments, in many ways the disease remains a mystery to researchers and medical professionals alike. According to data published by the research-based healthcare company Roche, for reasons that are not entirely understood, breast cancer is more common in the left breast than the right. The left breast is 5 to10 percent more likely to develop cancer than the right breast. The left side of the body is also 10 percent more vulnerable to the skin cancer melanoma than the right side of the body.

Explaining atrial fibrillation (MS) In late 2013, the World Health Organization released results from a data analysis that examined atrial fibrillation and its prevalence across the globe. The results were troubling, indicating that 33.5 million people worldwide have the condition. If those figures don’t raise an eyebrow, that’s likely because few people are familiar with atrial fibrillation, in spite of its prevalence. A broader understanding of atrial fibrillation, often referred to as AF, may help people reduce their likelihood of developing the condition. What is atrial fibrillation? The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute notes that atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. AF occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s two upper cham-
bers, known as the atria, to contract very quickly and irregularly. What happens when a person has atrial fibrillation? The heart is not functioning properly when a person has atrial fibrillation. That’s because blood pools in the atria when a person has AF, and because of that pooling, the blood is not pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, which are known as the ventricles. As a result, the heart’s upper and lower chambers do not work in conjunction as they do when the heart is fully healthy. Are there symptoms of atrial fibrillation? Some people with AF do not feel
symptoms and only learn of their condition after physical examinations. That highlights the importance of scheduling annual physicals for all people, but especially for people with a personal or family history of heart trouble. According to the American Heart Asso

Anyone who feels such a symptom or suspects their heartbeat is abnormal should consult a physician immediately. In addition to a quivering or fluttering heartbeat, the AHA notes that people with AF may experience one or more of the following symptoms: • General fatigue • Dizziness • Shortness of breath and anxiety
medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Whether or not symptoms of AF are detected, the condition can still increase a person’s risk for serious medical problems, including stroke. Who is at risk for atrial fibrillation? No one is immune to atrial fibrillation, though risk of developing the condition rises as a person ages. Men are more likely than women to develop AF, which the NHLBI notes is more common among whites than African Americans or Hispanic Americans.
• Congenital heart defects
The NHLBI also notes that AF is more common in people who have:
• Sweating
• Heart failure
• Pericarditis
The AHA warns that people experiencing chest pain or pressure are having a

• Coronary heart disease
• Structural heart defects
• Chest pain or pressure
• Faintness or confusion
• High blood pressure
• Rheumatic heart disease
People suffering from hyperthyroidism, a condition characterized by excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone, are at greater risk for AF than those without the condition. In addition, people who are obese and those who have been diagnosed with diabetes or lung disease are at greater risk for AF than those without such conditions.
• Weakness
9
Can atrial fibrillation be prevented? There is no guaranteed way to prevent AF, though certain lifestyle choices can reduce a person’s risk for the condition. A heart-healthy diet that’s low in cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fat and also includes daily servings of various whole grains, fruits and vegetables can lower a person’s risk for AF. Daily physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking also can lower a person’s risk. Atrial fibrillation is a rising threat across the globe. More information about AF can be found at www.heart.org.

When two or more vertebrae aren’t functioning together properly, it is what many chiropractors refer to as a subluxation or a misalignment. These subluxations are actually joint dysfunctions that can cause you to experience pain, discomfort, decreased mobility, or many other symptoms and conditions. 7 Ways Parents Can Be Role Models for Healthy Eating By Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN Published Apr 18, 2016 Are You a Healthy Eating Role Model for Your Kids?As parents, we invest a lot in our children. We spend our time, money, effort, and love on them — all with the hope of launching a happy, healthy adult into the world. But despite all of that investment, one of the areas we sometimes tend to overlook is how to take care of their bodies from the inside out. As a mom of three grown sons, I know exactly how many sacrifices, and how much love it requires, to raise a child. But as a nutritionist, I’ve also come to realize that parents — despite their best intentions — often let healthy eating

slide for themselves without realizing that their children are watching. Yes, although it may seem like your children are paying more attention to computers, smartphones, or TVs, they are noticing a lot more about you and your habits than you may realize. Even worse, they’re following your lead.
Here’s how you can make a quick turnaround and start modeling healthy eating habits that are worth copying:
1. Get the Whole Family in the Kitchen
“My mom never sits and has dinner with me, and it’s really annoying when she grabs things off of my plate because she’s probably hungry,” said a 9-year-old boy as he sat across from my desk. His mom brought him to my office seeking help to encourage him to eat his veggies. This boy, however, had his own agenda: He seemed to want to talk more about his mom’s faulty habits than to focus on his own.
“If your kids see you preparing healthy meals at home rather than ordering fast food, they’re more likely to do the same as they enter adulthood,” says Diana Rice, RD, associate director of nutrition communications for The Monday Campaigns. “Better yet, ask the kids to join you so you can demonstrate how to prepare healthy foods,” suggests Rice.
Although clients often consult with me to learn about “what” to eat, it’s typically “how” they eat that requires just as much of an adjustment. Certain behaviors help create a welcoming and

or munching on a sandwich? Making an effort to eat together as a family is essential. Sitting down to eat together goes way beyond sharing a meal. “This practice helps kids develop conversation and listening skills, and signals that you’re interested in learning about what’s going on in their lives,” says Rice. It’s also a good time to talk about your own activities and expose your children to the joys and stresses that parents face every day.
3. Shut Down the Screens A “no screens rule” at the table is one that needs to be practiced by all involved, from parent to preteen. There’s no text or Tweet more important than connecting with those you love — without interruption!
4. Don’t Skip Meals!
impair attention and short-term memory, which isn’t constructive for adults or children in the boardroom or the classroom.
5. Snack Sensibly
Going for long periods of time without eating undermines weight loss and can lead to inappropriate eating or overeating.
A study published in January 2016 in the Journal of Nutrition Research that examined the impact of eating modest

for 3 weeks showed an overall improvement in diet quality and gut microbiota in study participants. Although this was not a huge study (it only looked at 29 parents and their children), it underscored that nutrient-rich, satiating snacks could prevent parents and their kids from munching on between-meal noshes that would be otherwise void of nutritional value.

6. Everyone, Including You, Should Try One Healthy Food If you turn you nose up at veggies, expect your kids to do the same. Try not to reject foods based upon the “I don’t like it” rule you have assumed to be true since childhood. You may need to make the effort to at least take a small bite of a food that is healthy and nutritious for your child so that they can observe that you actually consumed something that you once said you didn’t care for. Who knows? You may actually enjoy it!
7. Chew Your Food — Don’t Inhale! According to a study published in December 2015 in Pediatric Obesity, children who waited 30 seconds between each bite of food lost an average of 3.4 percent of their body weight during a year-long research project, while those who didn’t take their time to savor each bite showed a weight increase by as much as 12.6 percent. Eating slowly triggers feelings of fullness and sends signals of satiation to the body to help curtail calorie intake. Serving as a positive role model is especially important when modeling food behaviors. Perhaps it’s time that, as parents, we take our own food-related responsibilities more seriously.

Dementia is a normal process of aging, or is it? Submitted by Morningside of Sterling
There is often a common misconception that everyone who ages gets dementia. However, this is not true. There are characteristics we see in aging adults that often times gets confused as dementia. For example: If your loved one occasionally can’t find the word they are trying to say compared to frequently not being able to find the word they are trying to say. Another great example is if your loved one is more concerned about their forgetfulness compared to you being more concerned about their memory loss. Often time’s people who are developing dementia do not always realize they are forgetting recent events. Dementia is an ever changing disease and unfortunately there is not a cure for this illness. It affects at least 47.5 million people worldwide and there are new cases developing every day. Every person diagnosed with dementia is different but a few signs to look for would be: •You notice a change in their hygiene. Maybe they have always been a very sharp dresser and now they are rarely changing their clothes. This could be because they simply don’t remember the steps in getting dressed and to prevent
that stress, they stay in their current clothing. •You notice a change in their appetite. People with dementia can often times forget to eat all together or forget that they have already eaten and will over eat. •You notice a change in their decision making skills. Clothing choices is a great example. Residents with dementia do not always associate the hot temperature of summer with wearing light clothing; sometimes a person with dementia will attempt to wear sweaters and winter coats. Again, every person diagnosed with dementia is different and unique in their own way. The best way to determine if your loved one does indeed have dementia is talking to their primary care physician. If you are interested in finding out more information about the basics of dementia, Morningside of Sterling is hosting a free educational program through the Alzheimer’s Association on Thursday September 8th at 6:00pm. The program will involve: The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease: If you or someone

Oral health impacts overall health (MS) A healthy mouth is good for more than just a pretty smile. Oral health can affect the entire body, making dental care more than just a cosmetic concern. Many people know that poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and even lost teeth. But are you aware that failing to brush or visit the dentist regularly also can lead to more serious health issues? According to Colgate, recent research suggests that there may be an association between oral infections,

Gum disease also may make diabetes more difficult to control, since infections may cause insulin resistance and disrupt blood sugar. Your mouth also can serve as an infection source elsewhere in the body. Bacteria from your mouth can enter the bloodstream through infection sites in the gums. If your immune system is healthy, there should not be any adverse effects. However, if your immune system is compromised, these bacteria can flow to other areas of the body where they can cause infection. An example of this is oral bacteria sticking to the lining of diseased heart valves. Other links have been found between oral health and overall health. In 2010, researchers from New York University who reviewed 20 years of data on the association concluded that there is a link
between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers in the UK also found a correlation. Analysis showed that a bacterium called “Porphyromonas gingivalis” was present in brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. The P. gingivalis bacterium is usually associated with chronic gum disease and not dementia.
Dentists may be the first people to diagnose illnesses patients don’t even know they have.
Researchers also have found a possible link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease, based on studies of men from 1986 through 2007. While oral health issues may lead to other conditions over time, symptoms also may be indicative of underlying con-

An important step in maintaining good overall health is to include dental care in your list of preventative measures. Visit the dentist for biannual cleanings or as determined by the doctor. Do not ignore any abnormalities in the mouth. Maintain good oral hygiene at home by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once per day. Mouthwashes and rinses also may help keep teeth and gums healthy.

7 Simple Ways to Boost Your Family’s Natural Immunity by Gina Badalaty on October 16, 2014 in Natural Remedies {Affiliate Disclosure and Disclaimer}
7 Simple Ways to Boost Your Family’s Natural Immunity | The Soft LandingWinter is upon us again and for families, that means one big concern: getting sick. Colds, flus and viruses are on the
rise this time of year. To protect your family against getting sick, boost their natural immunity with these simple steps that you can start today.
How to Boost Your Family’s Natural Immunity Get Enough Vitamin D Winter time means more time indoors and less exposure to the sun – which means our kids are getting less Vitamin D in their diets. This can make them more vulnerable to colds and infections. On sunny winter days, bundle your family up and do seasonal activities, such as pumpkin picking, outdoor festivals and hayrides. To make up for the rest of the season, you have your vitamin D serum level tested to see if you need a supplement. If so, be sure to take a high quality D3 supplement rather than the synthetic D2 version for a safer choice (like this vegan D3 spray).
Get Sufficient Sleep We all know a good night’s sleep is a great idea, but did you know it could boost your immunity? Studies have linked sleep with immune function. The end of the year is filled with holiday events that can keep us up late so be sure your family gets full night’s sleep. Suggested minimums are higher than you might expect: 8 hours for adults, 10-11 hours for teens, and even more for younger children. Frequent and Proper Hand Washing Many viruses can be avoided with frequent hand washing, but you also need to teach your children proper hand washing techniques. Scrub your hands for 30 seconds under warm water with a non-toxic (preferably castile) soap. You should also avoid hand sanitizers. Most popular brands contain triclosan and triclocarban, which act as endocrine disrupters, and frequent use can kill off friendly bacteria, leading to the

development of resistant bacteria. This can actually increase your child’s risk for disease. Exercise In 2008, NBC News reported on research showing that regular exercise builds your body’s defenses against colds and flus. In fall and winter, you family can build snowmen, jump in rain puddles and play tag football. If you can’t get outside in inclement weather, find ways to be active indoors. Host impromptu dance parties with your children, find YouTube videos featuring youth workouts or play a video game that includes fitness or movement. Another great idea is a mini-trampoline. Kids can jump on and all throughout the day while you can use it for a high impact workout! Reduce Your Holiday Sugar Consumption Between Halloween, holiday parties and events that feature sweets, kids can be exposed to an overload of sugar in the fall and winter. According to AskDr.Sears.com, studies have shown that excessive simple sugars, like table sugar and honey, can reduce the body’s immune response. Make sure to regulate the number of desserts and candies your family is eating as well as choosing sweeteners that have a lower glycemic index for baking. Balance Your Gut Winter not only means more sugar, but also more baked goods, and that means your gut flora can be out of balance. Too much of these foods can make candid, yeast and other “bad’ bacteria thrive in your intestines, lowering your immunity. To aid your gut in getting balanced, put your family on a high quality probiotic tailored for their age. Eat Foods that Boost Immunity Leafy greens, fruits high in vitamin C like oranges, and other organic produce rich in antioxidants will help your family stay free of sickness. Don’t forget to add

Exercise: Even a little is good! By Ed Zimney, MD
recommendations are for 30 minutes of exercise five times per week for a total of 150 minutes).
Published May 24, 2007 Are you afraid to start an exercise program because you think you don’t have enough time to meet national standards? Well, here’s some good news. New research shows that even a little exercise can significantly improve your physical fitness. An article in the May 16, 2007 issue of “The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that as little as 75 minutes of exercise per week can improve cardiorespiratory fitness levels in overweight individuals who were previously sedentary. This level of activity is about one half of that currently recommended by the National Institutes of Health (current
The research was conducted in postmenopausal women who were overweight or obese and who were sedentary (meaning they exercised for less than 20 minutes three days a week). There were four groups: no exercise, 50%, 100% and 150% of current guidelines (meaning 75 minutes, 150 minutes and 200 minutes per week). Exercise consisted of either walking or cycling (stationary bike). At the end of six months, the groups were tested for cardiorespiratory fitness, and there was a direct correlation between the amount of exercise and the improvement in fitness. Although more exercise equated with more improvement, the major finding was that significant im-

provement was seen even at the lowest exercise level Ă˘â‚Źâ€œ 75 minutes per week. I should point out that although fitness improved, weight loss did not occur, and there was no improvement in blood pressure or blood lipid levels (cholesterol and fat). But improved fitness is still an extremely worthy goal. It has previously been shown that women who walked for as little as 1-1.5 hours a week (60-90 minutes) had half the risk of developing coronary heart disease than sedentary women. According to the study authors, “Low fitness is a powerful, independent risk factor for premature mortality. Perhaps the most striking finding of our study is that even activity at ‌ approximately 72 min/wk was associated with a

Diabetic vision changes
Routine eye examinations can help doctors diagnose diabetes early. Such examinations also are important in the management of the disease and the prevention of vision loss. (MS) Diabetes affects 23.6 million people in the United States and close to three million people in Canada. While diabetes can be accompanied by many different symptoms, some people are surprised to learn that diabetes can affect the eyes and vision. Changes in vision are sometimes the earliest warning signs of the presence of diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetic eye disease is its own stand-alone condition, and the National Eye Institute points out that diabetic eye disease comprises a group of eye conditions that affect people with diabetes. These may include retinopathy, macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma. All forms of eye disease can potentially cause severe vision loss or blindness. Those with diabetes also can experience xanthelasma, or yellowish collections of cholesterol around the eye area. What’s more, diabetes can put individuals at risk of developing conjunctival bacterial infections (pink eye), as well as corneal erosions, corneal defects and subse-
quent dry eyes. According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are at a 40 percent greater risk of suffering from glaucoma than people without diabetes. The longer someone has had diabetes, the more common glaucoma is. Diabetics also are 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts. Vision checkups and care are an important part of living with diabetes. Routine eye examinations can head off potential vision problems and have been known to alert doctors to the presence of diabetes before patients know they have it. During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, eye doctors will examine all areas of the eye to check for illness. Pressure on the eye will be tested, as glaucoma can cause elevated pressure. The doctor also will check for any clouding of the eye lens. When an eye is dilated, doctors can examine the retina at the rear of the eye. Points that will be checked include:
• changes to blood vessels, including any leaking blood vessels or fatty deposits • swelling of the macula • damage to nerve tissue • health of the retina, and whether there are any tears or detachments While many of the vision loss problems associated with diabetes are irreversible, early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness by 95 percent, advises the NEI. Controlling diabetes slows the onset and worsening of visual symptoms. People with diabetes may need to see their eye doctors more frequently and have a greater number of dilated exams to ensure eyes are still in good health. To keep diabetes in check, follow a doctor-recommended diet, monitor your blood-sugar levels and get plenty of exercise. Eye doctors and primary care providers can work together to ensure that all symptoms of diabetes — whether visual or otherwise — are treated effectively.
