Channahon State Park I&M Canal Locks No. 2 Postcard
History Celebrating our 60th anniversary is a special moment in the Village of Channahon’s history. From the early Pottawatomi Indians who first settled and named our village to the individuals who located here during the I&M Canal’s construction, all have embraced Channahon’s relationship with nature and recognized the need to develop the area to match the beauty of the natural resources.
Channahon State Park I&M Canal Postcard Today, the original vision for Channahon is a reality: a scenic village with diverse residential, commercial and retail experiences. Our extensive natural areas, parks and trails define our landscape. Two exceptional school districts share Channahon’s history with residents both new and old. The Village of Channahon does not rest on its laurels, though. Our comprehensive plan - Re-Imagine Channahon 2020 - outlines the village’s shared vision for tomorrow while keeping in mind the area’s history and roots. Perhaps most remarkably, the families of many of the steadfast settlers who built Channahon are still here, along with the new residents of continued on page 4

Channahon’s Growth The landscape of Channahon has surely changed quite significantly over the past 60 years. The once small canal town has quietly and efficiently transformed into a bustling destination for new residential, commercial and industrial growth. Balancing business and industrial development with quality life for residents, Channahon created a comprehensive land use plan that provided for that balance, with the goal of sustaining a well-rounded community. “Our goal was and is thoughtful growth. The importance of proper planning and execution is vital to the sustainability of a community,” said Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher. “We pride ourselves on fostering development while still maintaining the small town atmosphere that makes Channahon a peaceful, desirable community. Our current population of approximately 14,000 allows us ample opportunity for that thoughtful growth while still maintaining our small town charm.” With more than 200 businesses calling the Village home, Channahon has taken center stage as a community with which business can be done. Recent years have seen exponential growth of non-residential development, specifically within the I-55 corridor. Carefully locating industrial businesses in deliberately selected areas such as this has allowed Channahon to be a successful partner in development, while
55 Crossroads Aerial maintaining high standards for residential life and recreational opportunities. “Non-residential development helps to broaden the tax base, easing the burden on residents,” said Schumacher. “Development has been considered very carefully and deliberately to help us do just that. The industrial parks south of Route 6 and east of I-55 were located adjacent to already existing industrial uses both within the municipal limits continued on page 8

Interest in the Channahon area continues to grow, from residential, to retail and commercial to industrial. New home building continues to grow the Channahon community. Much of the as
Channahon Police Department yet vacant land lies on the far west side of the Village, some of which was annexed and zoned for industrial use several years ago. A full interchange was constructed at I-80 and Brisbin Road, where Channahon, Morris and Minooka all share boundaries. According to Schumacher, inquiries about further industrial development in the community are directed to that area.

The Village of Channahon’s history dates back to when the Pottawatomie Indians who first settled here called the area Channahon, meaning “Meeting of the Waters.” Channahon grew along the I&M Canal at the intersection of three rivers - the Des Plaines, Kankakee and DuPage - that flow together to form the Illinois River. In 1836, construction began on the I&M Canal and Channahon became the site for one of the original Locktender houses at Lock 6, still visible today in the Channahon State Park. These natural features dominate Channahon’s landscape today and are predominantly highlighted by the various community and state parks, pathways, destinations, numerous dining options and an array of outdoor recreation activities that Channahon offers its residents and visitors. Located on the north side of the Illinois River, Channahon has several access points that open up to all kinds of entertainment on the waters - boating, water skiing, fishing or simply relaxing near the water’s edge. Avid golfers can visit The Bluffs Golf Course, Channahon’s 18hole award winning course operated by the Channahon Park District. There are also miles of hiking and biking trails along the I&M Canal, and plenty of woods and fresh air in the Forest Preserves. While en-
joying Channahon’s many trails, visitors can see the Briscoe Mounds, the largest Native American burial mounds in northern Illinois, or stop by the Four Rivers Environmental Education center for a stunning view of the outdoors and the Illinois River. “We’re so fortunate to live in an area that provides for so many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty,” said Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher. “There truly is something for each and every one of our residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The Channahon Park District was created August 13, 1971 by the community to manage the I & M Canal State Park in Channahon, a 12 acre park. 50 years and more than 500 acres, 19 parks and four facilities later, the Channahon Park District is proud to celebrate its 50th anniversary! In its early years the Park District offered a few summer events and programs including day camp, tennis lessons, softball and swimming at the Manor Motel’s pool, which the district leased. In the mid-1970s, the Park District acquired approximately 120 acres of the Scarcelli Farm east of Interstate 55 on Canal Road. The result, Community Park, remains the Park District’s largest park. The approval of a park site contribution ordinance by the Village of Channahon in the late 1970s, which required developers to donate land to the Park District for park sites, allowed the Park District to expand its outdoor park space. Eighteen of the Park District’s neighborhood parks were obtained under the ordinance. Before obtaining its own program facilities, the Park District utilized many local partnerships including Channahon School District 17 gymnasiums for indoor activities. continued on page 12

In 1983, the Park District acquired the property for what is now 44-acre Central Park, as well as Skateland Recreation Center. In 1991, the Park District opened Arrowhead Community Center on the Central Park property and relocated Park District offices there. The Park District’s long-sought plans for an aquatic facility and a golf course were realized in 1993, with the opening of Tomahawk Aquatic Center and Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club. The Bluffs was quickly recognized as one of the top public golf facilities in the nation and has garnered numerous awards throughout its 28 years. Engage. Grow. Inspire. These words encapsulate Three Rivers Public Library District’s vision for service. As Three Rivers Library celebrates our 45th anniversary, we continue to work to best meet the needs of our citizens within the foundation of this vision. From its inception by public referendum in 1976, our district has grown and adapted to our evolving population’s needs. Our Minooka Branch was added to better serve the residents of that area in 1992, and our Board of Trustees is currently weighing options to expand service opportunities and spaces as our community continues to welcome new members. During the pandemic, Library staff took the opportunity to adjust our services to reach as many patrons as possible. While we still offer books – lots of books – we also offer many other traditional media in a physical format, such as Graphic Novels, DVDs, Large Print Books, Books on CD, Music CDs, Magazines, Video Games, and Playaways.
