Morris Hospital Offers Specialized Lymphedema Treatment
Swelling that occurs in the head, arm, leg, and/or trunk following certain types of surgeries, trauma, or radiation therapy may be a sign of lymphedema, a chronic, progressive condition that is caused by a disruption of the lymphatic system.
The first signs of lymphedema typically include heaviness, aching, burning, stiffness and jewelry tightness in the affected limb. While there is no cure for lymphedema, it is important to seek medical attention to avoid excessive swelling and reduce the risk of cellulitis, a potentially serious bacterial skin infection.
WHERE TO TURN FOR HELP
Morris Hospital offers evaluation and treatment of lymphedema through a specialized therapy program known as Complete Decongestive Therapy that includes clinical treatment, education and support to patients and families dealing with the challenges of living with and successfully managing lymphedema.
The therapy is performed by specially certified physical and occupational therapists at Morris Hospital who have completed 175 hours of specialty training and includes: manual lymph drainage (specialized lymphatic massage) to stimulate and redirect lymph flow; compression with specialized bandaging, garments and occasionally pumps; exercises to assist the muscles in moving fluid and improving motion and strength, and skin care to maintain healthy tissue and prevent infection.
Through the lymphedema therapy program, patients receive education in the areas of self-massage, exercise and use of appropriate compression so they can learn how to manage the condition on their own.
For more information, call Morris Hospital Rehabilitation Services at 815-9428301 and ask to speak with a certified lymphedema therapist. Lymphedema therapy is offered at Morris Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services locations in Morris and Ottawa.

MIDWEST INSTITUTE for LUNG at Silver Cross Hospital is Helping the Community BREATHE EASIER
LUNG CANCER
is the number one cancer killer in America. In fact, it kills more people than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. Approximately 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. What’s more, lung disease is also a top cause of death in the U.S., and costs our nation nearly $50 billion per year, including nearly $4 billion due to absenteeism at work.
A Team of Experts
The Midwest Institute for Lung at Silver Cross Hospital’s multidisciplinary approach to treating lung cancer means every patient with lung cancer benefits from a team of specialists dedicated to evaluating known or suspected lung tumors in a timely and coordinated manner. This includes thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists. They meet weekly to review each case, design a treatment plan and expedite every aspect of care.
The Latest Technology
Finding and treating lung cancer early, when it’s most receptive to treatment, is critical.
That’s why Silver Cross invested in a powerful tool called Ion by Intuitive (which also produces the da Vinci robot, well-known for many years at Silver Cross).
The robotic-assisted Ion bronchoscopy platform uses an ultra-thin, highly maneuverable robotic catheter to reach parts of the lung not possible through a standard biopsy. Since the game-changing Ion enables physicians to obtain tissue samples from deep within the lung, it addresses a challenging aspect of lung biopsy. It may also help patients avoid subsequent biopsies by helping enable a diagnosis through the samples obtained.
How the Ion Robot-As sisted Bronchoscope Works
During robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, the doctor uses a controller with a heads-up display to navigate the camera-equipped catheter along a preplanned path through the lung airways.
With its 3.5-millimeter size and ability to articulate 180 degrees in any direction, the Ion is capable of reaching all 18 segments of the lung. Once the targeted area is reached, a flexible needle is used to biopsy the suspect tissue.
The advanced features of the Ion robotic navigation system offer an unprecedented level of precision when performing bronchoscopies for lung nodule biopsy.
Chronic Lung Disorders
Imagine, if walking even a few steps left you winded or worse, gasping to catch your breath.
For many people with chronic lung disorders, that’s an unfortunate reality they face every single day.
Chronic respiratory diseases affect the airways and other structures of the lungs. Some of the most common are:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Emphysema
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common lung disease causing restricted airflow and breathing problems. It is sometimes called emphysema or chronic bronchitis. In people with COPD, the lungs can get damaged or clogged with phlegm. Symptoms include cough, sometimes with phlegm, difficulty breathing, wheezing and tiredness.
Smoking and air pollution are the most common causes of COPD. People with COPD are at higher risk of other health problems.
COPD is not curable, but symptoms can improve if one avoids smoking, exposure to air pollution and gets vaccines to prevent infections. It can also be treated with medicines, oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Asthma and Severe Allergies
Asthma is a long-term condition affecting children and adults. The air passages in the lungs become narrow due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small airways. This causes asthma symptoms such as cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness.
These symptoms are intermittent and are often worse at night or during exercise.
Other chronic lung disorders include occupational lung diseases and sarcoidosis. For more information, visit silvercross.org/lung-care

Crest Hill Man with COPD Breathing Easier Following ZEPHYR Procedure
M ichael Pecha had been battling through chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for quite a while. The truck driver from Crest Hill said it definitely affected his work…and life in general.
“I couldn’t walk 20 feet without stopping to take a breath,” said Pecha, 64. “I was taking medicine, but it wasn’t doing much. Of course, I kept on smoking. I had smoked for some 40 years.”
But it all caught up with him on March 16, 2022, when he couldn’t breathe much at all. His supervisor at work told him his color looked gray. That day, Pecha would wind up in the hospital for more than two weeks, including five days of intubation, with COVID pneumonia.
The silver lining is that while hospitalized, Pecha was working with Dr. Kristopher McDonough, a critical care pulmonologist and Co-Medical Director of the Midwest Institute for Lung at Silver Cross, who helped him recover to get back to work. During a follow-up appointment later that year, Dr. McDonough had a suggestion for his patient.
“Dr. McDonough said there was a procedure that could be a lifesaver for me. He told me to take a couple weeks to think about it. I said, if it’s a life-saver, why wait two weeks? Let’s do it.”
People with COPD/emphysema often struggle to catch their breath while doing everyday tasks because the damaged parts of their lungs can no longer release trapped air and have become overinflated.
The procedure would be installing a Zephyr® Valve, one-way valves that allow trapped air to be exhaled from the lungs and prevent more air from becoming trapped.
LUNG CANCER SCREENING is a process that’s used to detect the presence of lung cancer in otherwise healthy people with a high risk of lung cancer. The goal is to detect lung cancer at a very early stage — when it’s more likely to be cured. By the time lung cancer signs and symptoms develop, the cancer is usually too advanced for curative treatment.
“O ne test I had to take was inhaling deeply, and then seeing how long it takes to get all the air out exhaling deeply. The normal person takes eight seconds. I took 18 seconds,”said Pecha.
Prospective Zephyr patients must quit smoking at least four months before the procedure. But Pecha quit following the health scare the previous March.
Dr. McDonough scheduled the procedure for Feb. 6 at Silver Cross. The minimally invasive procedure takes about an hour.
“We got to Silver Cross around 7:30 a.m. that day, and I was in a room by 11 a.m.”
Zephyr patients stay in the hospital three nights for observation, but Pecha said he felt better that first evening following the procedure.
“They were walking me around later that day. I still had to stop now and then, but it was after walking farther than I had before.”
Once released, Pecha was on oxygen 24/7 while recovering at home. And he had to continue his COPD medications.
Five weeks after surgery, Pecha was cleared to return to work, using a portable oxygen bottle only while driving. Now, he uses one only while exercising during pulmonary rehabilitation at Silver Cross.
“People who see me now tell me how good I look, and that they can see the difference in the color in my face. This procedure really was a lifesaver. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me.”

Zephyr Valve: A New Treatment for COPD and Emphysema
For patients with severe COPD or emphysema, a new treatment option known as the Zephyr® Endobrachial Valve System has proven successful in improving lung function, exercise capacity and quality of life.
During this minimally invasive procedure, a doctor uses a bronchoscope (a thin tube with a camera), to place tiny valves in the airways of the lungs. These valves allow healthy portions of the lungs to expand, lifting pressure off the diaphragm to enhance breathing.
Silver Cross is one of only a few hospitals in the Chicago area to offer this treatment option for patients with COPD or emphysema.
Patients report being able to take full breaths immediately after the procedure and within a few days are back to doing everyday tasks with ease. In clinical studies, patients treated with Zephyr® Valves have been shown to:
• Breathe easier
• Be more active and energetic
• Be less short of breath
• Enjoy a significantly improved quality of life compared to untreated patients.

Tinley Park Man Gets an Assist from Silver Cross Occupational Therapist to Achieve His Goal
Jonathan Ryan was used to a certain amount of pain in his right arm. Not only has he played hockey for 30 years, his job involves a lot of heavy lifting of supplies and equipment like lawnmowers. Then he got hurt playing hockey as an opposing player caught his arm and bent it “in a way it’s not supposed to.” Ryan figured he would just push through the pain again, and it would go away.
“But this time, it didn’t,” said Ryan, of Tinley Park. “I’m not one to go to a doctor, but since I’m 41, I promised my wife, Jessica, I would start taking better care of myself for her and the kids.”
He had another goal, literally. His local team – the Wig Splitterz – was scheduled to play in the annual USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships February 10-12 in Eagle River, Wisc.
“We’ve been going up there for at least 10 years. You get 300 teams at all levels from all across the United States. It’s a great event and a fun guy’s weekend,” said Ryan.
But to reach his goal this time, he would need an assist from one of the Occupational Therapists at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.
“My GP took X-rays and determined there was no damage, but looked like tennis elbow. She referred me to Shirley Ryan, only 10 minutes from my house.”
Ryan was assigned to Occupational Therapist Kelly Fleming, herself a former high school athlete. She decided to go into OT after sustaining a serious injury to her wrist, taking her out of commission for playing softball and volleyball.
“A couple weeks after surgery, I went to OT. I never thought I would play sports again,” she explained. “The OT worked with me and helped me return to sports with no problems or pain in my wrist. I thought it was incredible, and I knew I wanted to help people do that, too.”
A PASSION FOR HELPING
“Being an Occupational Therapist and Certified Occupational Therapy assistant is more than just a profession to us – it’s a passion, and helping others in a way they never knew was possible,” said Ashlie
Broadhurst, MOTR/L, Clinical Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab at Silver Cross Hospital.
“We help each individual by taking the full picture into account, concentrating on what matters most to them.”
In addition to physical and speech therapies, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab at Silver Cross offers skilled occupational therapy services that include treatment for neurological disorders, orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, stroke and workrelated conditions.
Although the outpatient AbilityLab is on the first floor of Pavilion A, inpatient rehab is on the fifth floor and acute OT care can be found throughout the hospital, Broadhurst said the excellent communication and teamwork among the different settings ensures inpatients are receiving the best care to enhance their ability to engage in their daily tasks.
“We help patients maintain or rebuild their independence, and function at their highest possible level in order to achieve their goals.”
BACK TO THE ICE
For Ryan, that meant working with Fleming at his OT visits to make sure he could not only play at the Pond Hockey Nationals with his mates but continue to work too.
When he first came in for OT in December, Fleming said Ryan’s grip strength was only 30 pounds with his right hand, leading to a pain score of 9 out of 10. By comparison, his grip strength was 164 pounds with his left hand
with no pain.
After only three weeks of a couple weekly 45-minute therapy sessions, Ryan’s grip strength improved to 124 pounds with his right hand with no pain.
Therapy included heat, ice, massage, stretching and strengthening exercises, activity modifications and, much to Ryan’s dismay, using Kinesio Tape as he went back for a few practices toward the end of his 15 sessions.
“Oh, yes, he told me,” Fleming said. “He said one of his hockey teammates covers himself in it and told him repeatedly he should, too. I said, ‘Guess what? You’re going back to practice with the tape on now.’ When the tape is applied correctly, it can significantly decrease or even eliminate the pain experienced from tennis elbow throughout the course of therapy.”
Ryan said he wished he had gone for therapy sooner.
“Kelly was awesome, and the atmosphere at Silver Cross was great. You really shouldn’t wait when you’re hurting. You could be making it worse.”
“That’s why I do this. I like helping people get back to doing what is meaningful in their lives,” Fleming added.

Things you should know about varicose veins
SUBMITTED STORY
Eterna Med Spa has been treating spider and varicose veins since 2008 with various minimally invasive treatment options.
When it comes to varicose veins, putting off medical attention is not an option. That’s because, left untreated, they can worsen over time. Some of the symptoms associated with varicose veins include swelling, aching, cramping, fatigue, heaviness, itching and burning. In more serious situations, varicose vein disease can lead to the formation of a blood clot.
1. Modern treatments mean no downtime
There are several effective options for combatting the condition, including sclerotherapy.
Venaseal - A procedure that uses a medical glue to close affected veins. This special glue holds the walls of the veins together, stopping and then redirecting the blood flow to healthy veins. With time, your body will absorb the inactive veins and they will disappear.
RFA - Radio frequency ablation. This minimally invasive technique uses heat created by radio frequency to shut down the vein and redirect blood flow to the healthy veins.
After your treatment you walk out of your appointment and are encouraged to walk a lot through the day. There is no downtime.
2. Treatment does not hurt
The procedures are done in the office under local anesthetia. You will feel the initial injection that numbs the area, after that you will only feel some slight pressure. Actual procedure time is about 45 minutes. Eterna MedSpa is dedicated to making their patients comfortable.
3. A simple ultrasound can diagnose
A painless, simple ultrasound can explore how well your veins are functioning. The ultrasound can also determine the treatment necessary. Most insurance companies and Medicare will usually cover the ultrasound. Schedule an appointment today with Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center for your FREE vein screening.

Morris Hospital Cardiologist Warns that There is Never a Time to Ignore Heart Problems
Chest discomfort. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath. Cold sweat, nausea, lightheadedness.
Chances are, you’ve heard these enough times to know that they are warning signs of a heart attack. Still, too many people dismiss their symptoms, delaying emergency medical care when minutes really do matter and fast action saves lives.
Read on to hear what Morris Hospital Cardiologist Athar Saeed, M.D., has to say about heart problems and why it’s important to get help if your heart is giving you signs that something’s not right.
Q: What are signs that someone might have a problem with their heart?
Dr. Saeed: When it comes to your health in general, it’s important to know what your “normal” is and to pay attention to any deviation from what’s normal for you. We have some patients tell us that they used to be able to walk around the house without any difficulty, but now they experience significant shortness of breath just walking to the bathroom. For those patients, that’s not normal and could be a sign that something’s not right. Another common symptom that brings patients into our cardiology practice is dizziness, which can sometimes be a sign of heart disease. Palpitations is another one and just a fancy way to say you feel like your heart is racing, or you can actually feel your heart beating. Palpitations can be a sign of a heart rhythm problem, especially in women. While there are many different reasons for tiredness, fatigue can be a sign of heart disease. Unfortunately, the older people get, the less obvious the symptoms of heart disease become. This is where it comes back to being in tune with your symptoms and your body and knowing what’s normal and what’s not normal for you.
Q: What are the most common heart attack warning signs?
Dr. Saeed: Chest pain is certainly one of the most common. I have had some patients report chest pain on the left side of the chest and some with chest pain on the right side. Some have said the pain feels like it’s in the back of the chest. What’s most important to remember is that any type of chest pain is a concern, especially if the pain gets worse with exertion. Shortness of breath is another very common warning sign of a heart attack. Some people experience pain or
discomfort in one or both arms, pain in the back, or the neck, jaw, or stomach. Cold sweat, nausea and lightheadedness sometimes occur with a heart attack.
Q: What should someone do if they experience any of the heart attack warning signs?
A: Calling 911 is always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment for a heart attack. No one should ever hesitate to use a hospital emergency department if they think they might be having a medical emergency, including a heart attack. That’s what we’re here for. If it turns out to be nothing, that’s okay. We’d rather have you come and find out it’s nothing than have you not come when you should have.
Q: Why is it so important to get to a hospital quickly if it’s a heart attack?
Dr. Saeed: At Morris Hospital, we are very fortunate to have a cardiac catheterization laboratory, which is unusual for a hospital our size. The technology allows us to use x-ray guidance to take pictures of the arteries directly around the heart so we can see if there are any severe blockages. We can open up most blockages with a stent right in the cath lab. If somebody is having a major heart attack, the most important thing is to get the artery open as quickly as possible because permanent damage starts occurring within 90 minutes. At Morris Hospital, we have a team on call to respond to heart attacks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If we get the call from the ER, we’re at the hospital and ready to go within 30 minutes. We can also implant pacemakers and defibrillators in the cath lab.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Dr. Saeed: When it comes to heart trouble, the goal always is to catch the problem before there’s permanent damage. That’s what we’re here for. When people ignore symptoms, they’re putting themselves at risk for having permanent damage to their heart or an even worse outcome.
Dr. Saeed is a board certified cardiologist with Morris Hospital Cardiovascular Specialists. Along with Dr. Syed Ahmed, Dr. Mary Menz, and Cardiology Nurse Practitioner Sherese Pruss, the practice has office locations in Channahon, Dwight, Morris and Ottawa.
