From our Geneva Family to Yours

The holiday chill is in the air and our elves have been very busy creating a magical experience for our 57th Christmas Walk on December 6th at 6 pm in downtown Geneva.

Among the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts will roast over open fires, carolers will fill the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene will take place. Dazzling window displays, brimming with gift ideas, invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve holiday refreshments.

Join us in this year’s TREE-lightful Celebration, where the tree, and courthouse, will become aglow.

This popular and family friendly event offers visitors a very merry Friday evening full of hometown traditions as well as special treats —the arrival of Santa Lucia, Christmas cookies, the Great Tree lighting, homemade candy canes, and… Santa’s arrival.

Santa will visit children in his winter wonderland home at the Geneva Visitors Center, 10 S. Third St. beginning December 6 (and Saturdays and Sundays until December 21). Reservations are required as we want to make sure that Santa has some quality one on one with your child. Come to 3rd St. and wave to Santa as he rides in the carriage from 10:0010:20am Saturday and Sunday mornings, December 7-21.

(Santa will be back at the North Pole on Sunday, December 22nd .) And don’t forget to drop your letters to Santa at his post office on the courthouse lawn.

Treat yourself to the Christmas House Tour on December 6 & 7. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decorations, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illuminate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holiday magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva and a special gift (quantities are limited) are included in the $42 price of the ticket.

All events are presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Geneva, sponsors, and community volunteers. Proceeds from the house tour go to decorating the downtown for the holidays.

Let us show you our warmth, hospitality and spirit as a visit to Geneva becomes part of your holiday celebration.

For information on these events and events all through the holiday season, visit www.genevachamber.com or call 630232-6060.

A Treasure Trove on 3rd Street

Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby are keeping holidays meaningful and spectacular.

In the past few years, a lot of changes have come to Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby, two uniquely appointed shops now located on 3rd street in Geneva. Owner and operator Sylvia Torres is hoping to add some events to the roster next year while maintaining the upcoming holiday season’s worth of specialty items and collections in her stores.

Little Barn Baby is three times the size it used to be, and the larger location has enabled Torres to bring in more brands while augmenting the number of items they were already selling. For the upcoming season, the store will celebrate by bringing in a number of festive wares. “We will have special items – we usually have a new Christmas collection,” says Torres. “We usually do try to leave some of the items in the house, in the store. We’re trying to plan that a little better to have those items out specifically for the Christmas Walk.”

Little Red Barn Door is sponsoring the Geneva Holiday House Tour while Little Barn Baby is sponsor-

ing the Christmas Walk for the fourth year in a row. “We’re excited to have the opportunity again, to be a decorator of a house and we go in there and decorate everything. We’re doing the main level of a very cute quaint home located near downtown Geneva.

In 2025, Torres hopes to start hosting a variety of events in her space, much like they used to in St. Charles. “In our warehouse space we used to have in St. Charles, we used to have different events and previews – things like that,” she says. “And by next year, we’re hoping to be able to go back to having those events, parties and workshops. And maybe upstairs we can try to bring something like a baby sprinkle to those spaces.”

From drink mixes, candles and matches, kitchen linens, mugs, charcuterie boards, pillows, adorable signs and more, you’ll be sure to find the perfect gift for anyone on your list at Little Red Barn Door. For those with families and kids to delight, make sure you stop by Little Barn Baby to find the next treasured keepsake or Christmas gift.

(1) The Stoermer Family “Beech House”

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south on Third Street. Turn west (right) onto James Street. Continue on James to Lincoln Avenue. Home is on the right side on the corner of James and Lincoln Avenue.

Welcome to the “Beech House”! This stunning stone and cedar Modern Cape Cod style home, originally built in 1952, exudes a cozy, relaxed elegance that seamlessly blends its beach-inspired decor with the warmth of Christmas. Named for the gorgeous and rare American Beech tree in the front yard - a prominent feature of this beautiful corner lot - the district architectural Cape Cod style and interior design completed by Haven Design Group, speak to the quintessential American summer house; evoking daydreams of slower days and beachside New England retreats. Representing wisdom and knowledge, the Beech tree is also thought to symbolize generosity of spirit – a true reflection of the homeowner’s approachability and acts of kindness.

Generosity has a long lineage with this home. The original owner, Mary Wheeler, was the last member of the Wheelers, a pioneer family of Geneva. Mary was the daughter of John Wheeler, a prominent local businessman who established The Wheeler Construction Company, and the Wheeler Lumber & Coal Company on West State Street. The Geneva History Museum has many items from Mary Wheeler in their collection on display.

The coastal print in the dining lounge is a photograph of a beach in Corsica, France, a favorite vacation spot, visited by the family when they lived in London. Connecting indoor to outdoor living spaces is a key design feature of the Beech House, as it is in many Cape Cod style homes. To the side of the home, overlooking James Street is a breezy, three-season room with southern exposure adorned with a rope swing and cozy lounge furniture enjoyed morning, noon, and night.

The beautiful and bright kitchen reflects a sparkling winter’s night, and features crisp white cabinetry, part of a 2020 remodel with Hogan Design and Construction. The custom curio cabinet lovingly displays a grandmother’s china, and special heirloom pieces. The woven texture of the island chairs echoes the design aesthetic for the home as a nod to coastal living.

Sunlight streams into the spacious and grand family gathering room, suitable for Santa and all his elves to rest their tired feet by the warmth of the fireplace, as the snow gently falls outside. The interior design, textures, and color palette reflect the homeowners’ personal style and love of travel to beach town destinations.

Descend the stairs to the lower level family lounge where warmth and togetherness are the stars. The “horse” tree in the office space has special significance, as the homeowner is on the Board of Directors for HorsePower Therapeutic Riding, a non-profit organization located in St. Charles that focuses on harnessing the healing power of the horse through creative, inspiring, and challenging therapeutic lessons. Their eldest daughter has been riding at HorsePower for five years.

The primary suite is designed with both luxury and comfort in mind with the fireplace as the centerpiece. Flanking window seats provide an ideal spot to unwind with a Christmas book and leave a day of holiday preparations

behind. The generously sized bathroom feels like a private spa retreat, with beautiful fixtures, a deep soaking tub, and walk-in shower. Adjacent to the bathroom is a large walk-in closet designed to make organization a breeze. A bedroom side door offers easy access to the backyard for relaxing or entertaining, making this room a private sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

Thoughts of warmer weather invite you to the outdoor oasis complete with a custom heated pool and spa. Bluestone hardscape extends past the outdoor dining and lounge area. Imagine winter melting away as you exit past this beautiful space and backyard retreat.

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), proceed west on Rt. 38 to Grant Avenue. Turn right (north) onto Grant Avenue. Home is on the left side.

Welcome to this enchanting 1947 ranch home, a beautiful fusion of classic charm and modern sophistication. Nestled in a picturesque neighborhood, this 3,100 square foot, five-bedroom, four-bath home has been meticulously updated and expanded to offer a blend of timeless elegance and contemporary comfort. Originally an all-brick home, the latest transformation includes a spacious cedar addition that extends gracefully from the back of the house, enhancing both its footprint and functionality.

As you approach the home, the Christmas spirit is unmistakable. The exterior, adorned with twinkling lights and festive greenery, warmly invites visitors into a winter wonderland. Step inside, and the magic continues. As you enter the foyer say hello to the original homeowners, long-time Geneva residents Evelyn and Peter Gricunas. The current homeowners honor them by displaying their photo in this space that was originally their bedroom, one of only two in the original plan. They like to think that the Gricunases now get to greet people who visit the home they built.

each room captures the essence of childhood wonder, making it the perfect place for little ones to await Santa’s arrival. The primary suite once again captures the essence of bringing the outdoors in. The large windows in the en-suite bathroom not only provide breathtaking views of the beautifully landscaped backyard, but also create a bright and airy atmosphere. The soft, diffused light that streams through them makes it a perfect sanctuary for relaxation suitable for a Sugarplum Fairy and a Nutcracker Prince to retire after their busy day.

The homeowners are former professional ballet dancers, with a refined sense of grace and style. They have transformed their home - making light the priority, blurring the lines between inside and out. Step into the heart of the home and you’ll notice an open-concept layout that seamlessly integrates 1940s architecture with modern enhancements. The original living room fireplace is draped in sparkling garlands and carefully arranged seasonal decorations. The combination of classic elegance and festive cheer creates a welcoming and enchanting atmosphere- perfect for curling up with a cup of hot cocoa. The kitchen just beyond, features white oak, black wood, and walnut cabinetry, reflecting the homeowners’ refined taste and love for creating a welcoming and beautifully decorated living space.

Former residents of California, the family wanted to capture the west coast design and décor feel. Large windows do just that. The goal was to create a space they didn’t need to vacation from, and who would want to leave this welcoming living room? This 2023 addition by Wetmore Construction features a spacious living area, designed with both comfort and elegance in mind. The double-sided fireplace, a centerpiece of the space, evokes festive cheer and is all prepped for Santa’s big entrance. The expansive room is filled with natural light, highlighting the high ceilings and sophisticated decor. It’s a space where festive gatherings come to life, it’s graceful lines as elegant as a ballerina herself.

Step into a nostalgic holiday postcard in this 2,250 square foot mid-century ranch, originally built in 1949 by Carl and Inez Johnson. Carl was a long-time worker of the railroad who originally owned the land just after the turn of the century. Their names are still etched on the floor of the garage. This cozy home is a Weyerhaeuser Panel Home built by General Timber Service Inc in Dubuque, Iowa. It is believed that the home was partially built in Iowa and then shipped and erected on site in Geneva. The current homeowners purchased the home in 2013 and completed a 1,000 square foot addition in 2014 to make it a three bedroom, two bath home. The addition was designed by local architect Tim Nelson, and included the two exterior dormers, arbors on the front of the house and a pergola over the back patio. The surrounding landscape, designed by Plandscape, Inc., catches the soft glow of Christmas lights, and enhances the warm and inviting atmosphere that awaits inside.

As you walk through the colorful front door you are greeted with a bright and spacious floor plan, perfect for gathering the homeowners’ children and grandchildren as they anxiously anticipate the arrival of jolly old St. Nick. The dining room to your right features a gorgeous original marble fireplace, complete with an antique metal “summer cover” which first appeared in the 19th century when wood and coal-burning fireplaces were popular. In the summer months, homeowners covered the unsightly ash-filled opening of their fireplace. This would also slow down drafts and stop pests that might enter through the chimney. It is easy to imagine the fireplace crackling with warm fire as the Sullivans enjoy Christmas dinner; its mantle draped with garlands and stockings.

A hallway off the foyer holds the two original bedrooms and adjacent bathroom from the home’s original floorplan. Today these spaces are used as a moody home office, featuring artwork and photography done by the homeowners’ talented son and son-in-law, and a tranquil guest bedroom, perfect for hosting overnight holiday guests dreaming of dancing snowflakes and magical elves.

The kitchen, which features creamy white wood cabinetry to the ceiling, was built locally in Sandwich, Illinois. Imagine the bustling aromas of holiday baking, the scent of gingerbread adding to the festive atmosphere, where loved ones gather around the large island to enjoy the warmth of the home and the spirit of the season. The open kitchen looks into a large family room where a grand Christmas tree, decorated in colors complimentary to the room’s earth tones and gold highlights, takes center stage. Peek out onto the back patio draped in holiday glow, enhanced by seasonal greens and golds.

A photo wall featuring special family moments and memories leads the way to the primary suite overlooking a tranquil backyard, creating a serene holiday retreat. Added during the 2014 addition, the suite features a bedroom with vaulted ceilings and large windows offering a pictur-

esque view of the backyard patio showcasing the winter landscape outside. The plush bed, dressed in luxurious linens, adds to the inviting cozy feel. A throw drapes over the edge of the bed, inviting you to snuggle up and enjoy the view. A large bathroom and walk-in closet wrap up this primary suite, where every detail is thoughtfully curated to create a relaxing and festive environment. The room balances the modern elegance of the suite with classic holiday elements, offering a perfect retreat to enjoy the beauty of Christmas while gazing out over the wintery backyard.

As you walk out onto the patio note how the simple architecture is elegantly highlighted with sleek strands of white lights. In this setting, the home becomes a perfect blend of modernist simplicity and classic holiday warmth, creating a serene and nostalgic Christmas experience.

As you travel up the switchback staircase complete with original banister, take note of the oriel window large enough to spy flying reindeer. Three original bedrooms at the top of the stairs boast additional large windows, framing a picturesque winter scene below. Wallpaper in the anteroom marries the old house with the new, transitioning smoothly into the hallway. Here, shelves deck the halls and display special family trinkets as well as feature both a window seat for reading the Night Before Christmas and a workspace for Santa to check his list twice. Their daughter’s darling and dreamy bedroom to the left, is a perfect spot for play and sleepovers.

The newly added primary suite complete with a walk in dressing closet features integrated task lighting and a luxurious en-suite bathroom. Soft neutrals create a calming environment, while vibrant accent colors in rich textures add depth and interest. The en-suite bathroom offers a private retreat that feels both elegant and inviting, where you might find Santa relaxing after his trip around the world.

Downstairs, make note of the piano room, ready for gathering loved ones to sing Christmas carols. The walls are adorned with a long line of family musicians who have played with artist giants such as Stan Kenton and Martha Reeves. The adjoining living room features a handmade wall clock by the front door made by the homeowner’s father, an antique card catalog, now used for housing miscellaneous treasures, and an elegant original leaded glass transom window. Note the ornate original pocket doors separating the living room from the dining room.

The back kitchen, while functional and charming, has been thoughtfully integrated into the home’s overall aesthetic. The home’s original kitchen: this space is ideal for baking Christmas cookies and meal prep. The kitchen is decorated with seasonal festive touches grand enough for Marie Antoinette herself to bake a cake. Step down into the modern and sophisticated main kitchen perfectly appointed for hosting and toasting the season. The space boasts intricate countertops and custom white oak

The family room carries the same sophisticated color palette found throughout the home and was built with comfort and style in mind. Central to the room is the double-sided fireplace surrounded in Dourdan French Marble, serving as a stunning focal point. The room is furnished with plush sofas and inviting armchairs ideal for a long winter’s nap. The walls are decorated with large, framed numbers, each with special meaning: the homeowner’s anniversary, their children’s birthdays, and the year the house was built.

The deck is a delightful extension of the home’s lively spirit. A cozy seating area is decorated with plush cushions and throws, inviting guests to sit by the fire and enjoy Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Heading back through the family room and down the kitchen steps, note the brick herringbone floor in the back foyer which immediately draws your eye and provides a dynamic and textured surface which contributes to the home’s historic charm and architectural sophistication.

As you step outside, reflect on this stunner’s festive atmosphere that celebrates both the elegance of a bygone era and the joy of the holiday season.
