From our Geneva family to yours The holiday chill is in the air and our elves have been very busy creating a magical experience for our 56th Christmas Walk on December 1st at 6 pm in downtown Geneva. Among the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts will roast over open fires, carolers will fill the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene will take place. Dazzling window displays, brimming with gift ideas, invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve holiday refreshments. Join us in this year’s TREE-lightful Celebration, where the tree, and courthouse, will become aglow. This popular and family friendly event offers visitors a very merry Friday evening full of hometown traditions as well as special treats —the arrival of Santa Lucia, Christmas cookies, the Great Tree lighting, homemade candy canes, and… Santa’s arrival. Santa will visit children in his winter wonderland home at the Geneva Visitor Center, 10 S. Third St. beginning December 1 (and every Saturday and Sunday until December 17). Reservations are required as we want to make sure that Santa has some quality one on one with your child. Come to 3rd St. and wave to Santa as he rides in the carriage from 10:00-10:20am each Saturday and Sunday morning. And don’t forget to drop your letters to Santa at his post office on the courthouse lawn. Treat yourself to the Christmas House Tour on December 1 & 2. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decorations, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illuminate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holiday magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva and a special gift (quantities are limited) are included in the $38 price of the ticket. All events are presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Geneva, sponsors, and community volunteers. Proceeds from the house tour go to decorating the downtown for the holidays. Let us show you our warmth, hospitality and spirit as a visit to Geneva becomes part of your holiday celebration. For information on these events and events all through the holiday season, visit www.genevachamber.com or call 630-232-6060. —Paula Schmidt, President Geneva Chamber of Commerce

A Treasure Trove on 3rd Street Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby are keeping holidays meaningful and spectacular.

In the past few years, a lot of changes have come to Little Red Barn Door and Little Barn Baby, two uniquely appointed shops now located on 3rd street in Geneva. Owner and operator Sylvia Torres is hoping to add some events to the roster next year while maintaining the upcoming holiday season’s worth of specialty items and collections in her stores. Last year, the store moved to their new location in Geneva where Veiled in Elegance had been and is now connected by a hallway to the new location for Little Barn Baby. “We moved our baby store at the beginning of November of last year and Little Red Barn Door last July,” says Torres. “The space we have now, it’s all together and it is a little bit bigger, but I feel like it’s not super large compared to how it was.” Little Barn Baby is three times the size it used to be, and the larger location has enabled Torres to bring in more brands while augmenting the number of items they were already selling. For the upcoming season, the store will celebrate by bringing in a number of festive wares. “We will have special items – we usually have a new Christmas collection,” says Torres. “We usually do try to leave some of the items in the house, in the store. We’re trying to plan that a little better to have those items out specifically for the Christmas Walk.” Little Red Barn Door is sponsoring the Geneva Holiday House Tour while Little Barn Baby is sponsoring the Christmas Walk this year. “We got a pretty good-sized house and there’s a ton of things that are going to be remodeled so we’re excited to see how that’s going to end up,” says Torres. “We’re

the decorator for the house and we go in there and decorate everything. We’re doing the main level and basement in her house. In the last few years, we were in the downtown area but now we’re going to be in Mill Creek.” In 2024, Torres hopes to start hosting a variety of events in her space, much like they used to in St. Charles. “In our warehouse space we used to have in St. Charles, we used to have different events and previews – things like that,” she says. “And by next year, we’re hoping to be able to go back to having those events, parties and workshops. And maybe upstairs we can try to bring something like a baby sprinkle to those spaces.” From drink mixes, candles and matches, kitchen linens, mugs, charcuterie boards, pillows, adorable signs and more, you’ll be sure to find the perfect gift for anyone on your list at Little Red Barn Door. (1) The Black Family Home

0N633 Sounders Drive

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), proceed west on Kaneville Rd. Continue over Randall Rd., as Kaneville Rd. turns to Keslinger Rd. Continue on Keslinger Rd. to Prairie Clover Dr. (left) to Berquist (left) to Sounders Dr. (right). Home is on left side. This delightful 16-yearold home radiates the friendliness and hospitality that makes a house a home. At 4500 square feet, it was built by Shodeen Builders and our homeowners are one of the few original families still in the neighborhood. As you enter, the simplicity of the colors and lines complement the strong pillars, fun furnishings and unique windows. Bringing a WOW factor to the home. While built in 2007, 2019 saw the family embark on a remodel of the kitchen, master bath, stairs and trim in the foyer, making it a truly livable space for this family of six. Perhaps a job where Santa’s elves would have been useful? On your left is a cozy living room, just perfect to unwind and delight in a little Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song”. On your right, the dining area anticipates the guests with a wine-tasting corner presented by one of Geneva’s newest restaurants, The James. The staircase looks smart as a tuxedo with crisp black steps and railings trimmed in white. The small wall below the stairs is just the right size for a bar cart. Peppermint Martini or Christmas Mimosa? Brazilian Cherry floors guide you to the homeowner’s office, which is so much more. It is a homage to his golfing skill and passion. Golfers are sure to recognize the flags from courses, throughout the world, he has played. Passing the inviting family room, take notice of a favorite item, the Eames lounge chair and ottoman. Designed in 1956 by designers Charles & Ray Eames. The originals are part of the permanent collection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. A patio prepared for the gathering to flow outside, has a gas fire pit just waiting for s’more merriment. Grab all the fixings and indulge. The renovated kitchen was a labor of love for the homeowners. The refrigerator was moved, new

cabinets, quartz countertops and a backsplash were installed. This all-white kitchen is balanced with a dark floor. A crisp white palette and lots of natural light give this modern kitchen an open, airy feeling. There’s a large island in the middle for prep work and keeping the baker company while decorating snowman sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles. Windows find a special place in the kitchen’s upper cabinets. The house is complete with the master, a bonus room and three more bedrooms on the second level. Departing, you may hear sounds of a neighbor’s waterscape and koi pond. Spending their sixteenth Christmas here, the Black’s will continue to make memories and traditions in their wonderfully loving home. (2) Home of Steve & Terri McCormick Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), proceed west on Kaneville Rd. Continue over Randall Rd., as Kaneville Rd. turns to Keslinger Rd. Continue on Keslinger Rd. to Brundige Dr. (left) to Armstrong Ln. (right). At the traffic circle take the 1st exit onto Herrington Dr. (right) to N. Hathaway Ln. (right) to Catlin Sq. (left) to home. Home is on left side. This 7700 square foot, seven-bedroom, 4.5 bath, southern charm-inspired home, was built in 2003 by Havlicek Builders. It is overflowing with craftsmanship, including detailed trims, cherry hardwood floors, moldings and many upgrades throughout the house. Twenty years of memories fill the walls and shelves. A wrap-around porch greets you like an old friend. Traditions such as the red and green uplighting on the trees and red ribboned wreaths intermix with Little Red Barn Door’s design and style. Upon entering the expansive foyer, gaze up to see a Schonbek crystal chandelier, another found to your right in the dining room. Two cherished nutcrackers bid you welcome. The table is spectacularly set for Christmas dinner with the homeowner’s Lenox Christmas china. Keeping with the Southern theme, a tradition brought to the dining room is a blue ceiling. Found on many porches in the south, it represents calm and peace. At any given time, the children can be found curled up in the front room, studying next to a flickering fire aglow in one of three fireplaces, while the snow gently falls outside. Anxiously waiting for the holiday break to begin. Head down to the pub-motivated basement, a gathering place of celebration for family and for friends. This space features exposed beams, a fireplace, attractive lighting and traditional wood flooring. The bar is stocked and ready for an impromptu party. A game room, sauna, bunk bedroom and movie theatre with stage, complete this social space. Distinctive pictures of the Fab Four hang to encourage all stage performers, past, present and future that you get by with a little help from friends. If stockings are hung with care on this fireplace, the jolly old elf may get a bit distracted. Light filters through a bank of windows in the family room. A warm color palette and furnishings invite you to stay a while. The sofas and armchairs are arranged so as to encourage conversation. Crown molding is an ideal finishing touch. A beautiful, double-sided brick fireplace sits between the family room and kitchen, large enough to see through. What a special treat! The McCormicks just renovated their stunning kitchen. Adding Brazilian Cristallo quartzite countertops, with the rich white, ivory, and gold undertones, this natural stone is a perfect complement to the Perrin & Rowe fixtures. New windows, a fresh backsplash, modern lighting along with GE Monogram

appliances fulfill this impressive kitchen. Christmas brunch is ready to be prepared. The oversized sun porch offers an easy way to combine indoor comforts with an outdoor feel. A jingle of bells has led the little ones to the windows, ho ho hoping to see if Santa has made his arrival in Geneva. A peek into a half bath with a Mitzi Paige chandelier and original artwork by Corinne Melanie, along with a laundry room that will have you thinking “unbelievable” are highlights on the way out. Linger one moment more to admire the Christmas brilliance of this Mill Creek home anticipating jolly gatherings for many years. (3) Campbell Street Cottage 216 Campbell Street Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south onto Third St. Turn left (east) on Campbell St. Home will be on the right side. This home may have lines longer than usual, due to its layout.

This plaqued home was built in 1857, and at over 160 years old, the craftsmanship is a testament to the past. The cottage, with its charming exterior and a history steeped in nostalgia, was an ideal choice for the owners to purchase and create a short-term rental. Originally situated on the corner of Campbell & Second streets, and the home of former Geneva Mayor Wm. C. Wood, it was moved in 1925, by Wood, to its current location. Wood commissioned local builders Wilson Brothers, famed for both the volume and the high quality of their construction, to remodel it, including adding the second floor. This 1400 square foot, two bed, two bath home has a lively past. A home for many families, but also a two-flat, an insurance office, an architectural firm, a law office, a real estate office and now a short-term rental. While difficult to confirm, because this home has changed owners and purpose over the years, it is believed the floors and windows are original. Within the cozy cottage, each visitor that steps through the door is considered a friend. You can imagine jovial merrymakers sitting around the crackling fire enjoying festive camaraderie. The homeowners have exquisitely blended modern conveniences with antique furnishings. Many are sourced from local shops. Travel up the staircase and delight in the two bedrooms. Great care was taken to appreciate the era’s design. Our homeowners converted a closet/kitchenette in the master bedroom, to what is now a reading nook. A perfect spot for pajama-clad children to gather and listen to ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas before retiring for the evening with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads. Dressed for the holidays, the front room is bathed in filtered sunlight from banks of windows. French doors open to a flawlessly set table, anticipating the joyfulness of the season. Strolling to the kitchen, you may feel as if you have stepped back in time. Appliances, cabinetry, even a vintage phone invoke a feel of yesteryear. Pause to bask in the attention to detail. A bonus room, stocked with entertaining options for all, is tucked behind the kitchen. Farmdog Flowers has brought the holidays to 216 Campbell Street. Staying a night, a weekend or a week, you are sure to remember your visit any time of the year. As you proceed into the winter air, step back and take a last look at Campbell Street Cottage. An enduring

(4) The 406

406 S. River Lane

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south onto Third St. Turn left (east) on Fulton St. to S. River Ln. right. Home is on right side. Once upon a time in a small, picturesque town, nestled amidst mature trees and steps away from a tranquil river, stood a beautiful cottage with Tudor-inspired architecture. This home, at just over 2500 square feet, was built by Hogan Design & Construction in 2021. The home, affectionately given the moniker “The 406”, was under construction when the family relocated from Austin, Texas back to Geneva. The family had their eye on the residence next door but it sold before they arrived back. All happens for a reason, as the family now says The 406 is a place you can call home for decades. Boasting a stunning exterior with a calming porch. Wrap yourself in a wool blanket, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and take a respite from present wrapping. The lush landscape envelopes the home, creating a harmonious connection between the man-made structure and the beauty of nature. You are greeted by an inviting foyer. This three-bedroom, three-bath abode exudes warmth and coziness. Stone accents with exposed wooden beams cross the ceilings, creating an enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of an old-world charm. The living room is adorned with a stone fireplace, providing a focal point for family gatherings on cool winter nights. Plentiful windows allow sunlight to stream in, offering breathtaking views of this sought-after neighborhood. Comfortable furniture and plush cushions add to the timeless appeal of the space. Special window treatments and plantation shutters throughout remind the family of a favorite New Orleans trip. A recent renovation is the expansion of what was a fourth bedroom to an open-space dining room. The table is primed for a holiday get-together. You can almost smell the aromas of Christmas dinner wafting through the air. Adjacent to the living room, a spacious kitchen showcases a perfect blend of modern appliances and rustic charm. Stainless appliances by Wolf and Subzero, quartz countertops and hardwood floors complement the white custom-built cabinets and farmhouse sink. The large center island serves as a gathering spot, where friends and family come together for good food and good conversation. Pendant lights illuminate the space further.

And their four-legged boy Gordie, enjoys his sanctuary outside. The fenced-in background provides safety and privacy for ALL the family members. 610 Home, interior designers to The 406, have extended their talents to add Christmas magic to the home. At only two years old the cottage’s charm has only deepened, and its walls already hold countless stories and cherished memories. Quaint in size, but big in personality, this home is a perfect combination of charm and practicality. (5) Home of Eric & Valerie Traxler 585 S. Eighth Street

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south on Seventh St. Turn right on South St. Turn left on Eighth St. Home is on left side at end of the street. Parking may be limited Saturday evening due to another event in the area.

Spectacular light graces this beautiful home that was made for entertaining and built in 2022 by Augustine Builders. A standout feature, the rain chain on the cedar columns, allows for a breathtaking show of ice and rain. While it is 3650 square feet, the family has lovingly added their personalities to make the house their loving home, including the photography talents of their son found in the foyer. The homeowners designed both the architectural and the interior design plans. A color palette in the front, where you see white with muted colors, differs from the black-and-white look in the back. As you are welcomed in, vintage doors, purchased from an Illinois antique shop, give way to the office. Painted in Benjamin Moore Mysterious, the room presents a calming break from work. Built-ins house collections special to the family. The open family room includes surprises such as reclaimed barn wood beams. Can you spot the VII on the mantle beam? A numbering system used back in the day. One of three fireplaces is aglow but will most certainly not be lit when St. Nicholas makes his arrival. Upstairs finds a second floor laundry, a hall bath and guest suite. The latter intended to feel like a stay in a boutique hotel, when friends and family visit. Stunning floor-to-ceiling tile in the walk-in shower with black fixtures, emphasizes the ambiance. A uniquely designed master, with spectacular views and a two-sided LED fireplace brings a sense of tranquility. The fireplace has a clear/opaque option to allow for privacy. Dusty gray accents add softness and subtle pops of color in this all-white bedroom with detailed trims. A modern black canopy bed anchors the room. Festive outfits, hung, in a closet designed by St. Charles Closets, are being prepped for a gala. Back downstairs, through the stunning archway, an interesting chandelier illuminates a table festooned with holiday finery. The hutch proudly stands in a space specially created. A cup of hot cider and reminiscing about Christmas past in the four-season room is a perfect ending to a perfect day. Plentiful windows bring warmth on a cold winter’s day. In the heart of the home, laughter and the aroma of holiday sweets baking in the kitchen, mingle with excitement and good cheer. Quartz countertops, under cabinet lighting and a custom curved designed quartz backsplash above the stove, are just a few of the impressive highlights of this space. Take notice of a third fireplace that can be enjoyed from both the dining room and the kitchen. Take a quick peek at the outside porch. A purposeful pergola, covering the outside seating, allows plenty of natural light. Just beyond is one of the newest additions, a pool surrounded by turf and rock. An ingenious way to enjoy, but not have the worry of too

much maintenance. On your way out, you are treated to a fully outfitted butler’s pantry. A classic checkered black and white floor leads you through. Light fixtures and glass door knobs complete the timeless look. Banker-wired bar cabinets, above the leathered granite top bar, hold glasses ready for any cocktail request. The skill of their son is again showcased on the way out. A recent Animation/Photography DePaul graduate, this painting was done in high school. When it is time to leave, enjoy a final look at the larger garage doors, built to fit their Airstream. Gas lanterns flicker as the sun sets and Jack Frost nips at your nose.
