COME DOWN TO GENEVA’S FESTIVAL OF THE VINE FOR FOOD AND WINE! F

or 40 years, the Festival of the Vine has highlighted and celebrated the flavors of fall. Come and celebrate this year on September 6-8. Festival of the Vine, voted Best Festival in three different reader polls, is set in the pictureperfect downtown of Geneva, IL and is hosted by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with support from the City of Geneva. Our Flavor Fare, full of international and seasonal cuisine and prepared by our very own Geneva Chamber of Commerce restaurateurs, comes alive as you pair your foods with over twenty intriguing wines. It is the centerpiece of this year’s celebration. Again this year, we will be accepting credit card payments for ticket purchase. Stroll down James and Third streets to discover business booths, flower market, arts & crafts show and carriage rides. Travel around the festival on our trolley sponsored by SavWay Fine Wines & Spirits. Complimentary face painting for the kids, thanks to Geneva Bank & Trust, A Wintrust Community Bank, is happening each day too. You can listen to local entertainers on the Courthouse Lawn from 12-2 pm. The entire downtown area is filled with special fall sales and events during Festival of the Vine so take time to get acquainted with all Geneva has to offer. RAISE YOUR GLASS AT THE FLAVOR FARE Kung Fu Riesling - This crisp and vibrant Washington state white offers white peach, apricots and mandarin orange. Minimally sweet, this Riesling delivers a great ‘punch’ with spicy foods. Kim Crawford Rose - A lively, dry rose brimming with upfront fruit flavors of watermelon, strawberry, and melon. Meiomi Pinot Noir - Very popular for its unique structure and depth unseen before in Pinot Noir, this California red has supple tannins, silky texture, and balanced acidity that make it pair well with a variety of foods. Seven Moons Red Blend - This red celebrates the seven phases of the moon by combining seven grape varietals sourced from throughout California. Flavors of strawberry preserves, cherry cola, and milk chocolate follow through to a smooth finish. Ruffino Prosecco - A sparkling white wine from northeastern Italy, its fine bubbles caress the palate, while intense flavors of apples and peaches give the wine a pleasing finish. Ruffino Sparkling Rose - Crisp acidity and elegant bubbles, this slightly sweet sparkler offers refreshing flavors of strawberry and raspberry that linger through the finish. Dreaming Tree Cabernet Sauvignon - A project in conjunction with musician Dave Matthews, this North Coast California offers up flavors and aromas of blackberry, cherry and toasted vanilla. An easy-drinking wine with a lot of personality. Velvet Devil Merlot - Ripe black berry fruit, currant and mocha flavors with bright acidity and smooth, spicy finish. The concentrated richness of this Merlot pairs well with grilled meats. Ruffino ‘Modus’ Tuscan Rosso - A Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the three varietals harmoniously create a wine rich with silky tannins and flavors of mature blackberry fruit and cocoa. A modern take on Italian winemaking. Cooper & Thief Bourbon Barrel-Aged Red Aged three months in Bourbon whiskey barrels, this complex red blend drinks like a port while

a faint smokiness from the whiskey barrels permeates the palate. Would go well with a rich dessert like chocolate. Wine choices - 16 tickets per glass The Prisoner Red Blend - Persistent flavors of ripe raspberry, boysenberry, pomegranate and vanilla linger harmoniously. ‘TIS THE SEASON TO SPEND IN GENEVA

‘Tis the season to spend in Geneva Christmas Walk and House Tour – December 6 & 7 Yuletide cheer fills the winter air when Geneva prepares for its annual Christmas Walk and House Tour, December 6 and 7. A magical tradition held the first Friday and Saturday in December, sponsored by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Geneva. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decorations, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours on Friday from 10 am to 8 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. The personality of each home will illuminate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holiday magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva is included in the price of the ticket ($35). A portion of the proceeds from the House Tour are used to decorate Geneva for the holiday season. Tickets will be available to order after mid-October online or phone, see below for both. This event may sell out, so order early. The holidays come alive in Geneva Friday evening beginning with the arrival of Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season. She and her attendants offer Swedish cookies to merry-makers. The Great Tree on the Courthouse lawn is lit and the young and young at heart will wait with anticipation as Santa Claus arrives.

18 • FESTIVAL OF THE VINE 2019 FestivalOfTheVine.indd 18

Santa will then open his Geneva home for visits from excited children. The excitement begins at 6 pm. Amongst the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts are roasting over open fires, carolers are filling the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene is taking place. Dazzling window displays brimming with gift ideas invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve traditional holiday refreshments. A Geneva Christmas is one not to be missed.
