ADVENTURE ON THE FOX RIVER TRAIL
The Fox River Bike Trail in Elgin offers more than 40 miles of guaranteed fun. It runs beside the scenic Fox River in Northern Illinois, alongside historic railroad lines, crossing six bridges and passing through nature preserves and charming towns.
The trail is the perfect outing for spirited cyclists, hikers, families and outdoor aficionados. No weather is too extreme to take advantage of the paths. If your bike does not have snow tires, break out the snowshoes or cross-country skis. The Fox River Bike Trail in the Elgin Area is also perfect for beginners or people just starting out their biking, walking, or outdoor adventures!
There is first-rate fishing along the Fox River, with many public spots to fish for bass, catfish and walleye. And, of course, there are plenty of tackle shops to hook you up with the right gear. The Carpentersville Dam is also a favorite local fishing hole. The dam has become legendary among anglers for record-breaking walleye and smallmouth bass.
Take a break in West Dundee to experience Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve. The boat launch here is popular for a reason—this is a gorgeous spot to kayak or boat, toss a line in or kick back with a cold one on the deck and watch the eagles like a hawk. Or perhaps stop and enjoy the food en route at one of the many adjacent restaurants or pack a lunch
and pull over at one of the many picnic spots! The Fox River Bike Trail passes through many forest preserves, offering weary cyclists the perfect excuse to ease off the pedals and soak up the natural beauty of the river. Native birds you may see include herons, woodpeckers and bald eagles – just to name a few.
Visitors coming from Chicago to Elgin are able to bring their bikes on Metra’s Milwaukee District West Line and get off at the National Street or Elgin exits, both a block from the bike trails, making it accessible to people who are traveling some distance.
As if you need even more incentive to spend time along the Fox River Bike Trail, these special events nearby are sure to entertain:
l Elgin Movies in the Parks
l Elgin Farmers Market
l South Elgin’s Summer Concert Series
l ELGbtq+’s Pride Parade
l Juneteenth Festival in Elgin
l La Fiesta de Elgin for Mexican Independence Day
l East Dundee’s Oktoberfest
The adventure does not stop there; with the 11 communities in the Elgin Area offering a rich sense of history, community, and delicious flavors to try, it is definitely a landmark to be seen. So come on by, and see the Elgin Area through the Fox River Trail!

10 parks, preserves and paths to view nature and art
By Patricia MacMillan
Forty miles. That’s how long the Fox River Trail stretches.
Along the way, the trail provides something for everyone. For all who traverse it, the trail serves as a refuge, one largely free from the everyday obstacles of suburban living. For nature enthusiasts, it brings countless scenic vistas and wildlife sightings. And for art and architecture lovers, the trail features a number of pieces that beautify and enhance this vast and winding waterway.
The time has come to find your favorite spot on the Fox.

NORRIS WOODS NATURE PRESERVE
At this 76-acre preserve in St. Charles, visitors can discover woods dominated by red and white oaks— some dating back more than 200 years. Several foot trails lead to panoramic views of the mighty Fox and its many denizens, including great blue herons and egrets. Smaller species like the belted kingfisher and brightly colored summer tanager and indigo bunting also make the woods their home.
MT. ST. MARY PARK
Crossing the river at Prairie Street leads to this St. Charles park, where art abounds in the form of statues — some abstract, some whimsical, all original. Made of durable materials such as bronze and stainless steel, the sculptures bring a striking element to the park’s meandering walkways. Fourteen pieces, such as Mr. Eggsward, a character with a mischievous countenance, hold a permanent position in the 30-acre space, while nearly 20 others are part of a collection that is chosen by committee and rotates on an annual basis.
PADDLEWHEEL RIVERBOAT AT POTTAWATOMIE PARK
At this St. Charles park, visitors can step aboard an old-fashioned paddlewheel riverboat for an idyllic cruise down the river. The two-level watercraft sports an open-air deck, allowing passengers an excellent spot for taking in their surroundings. Boats launch from Pottawatomie Park, the crown jewel of the city’s parks system. The space boasts several other amenities from minigolf to pickleball courts, though the most recognizable is its grand Historic Pavilion, a replica of the original pavilion complex that was built in the late 1800s.

RED OAK NATURE CENTER
One unique point of interest nestled along the Fox is a small cave formed out of Niagra Dolomite. Open to anyone interested in exploring this geologic treasure, the cave sits only a short distance from Red Oak Nature Center, where visitors can learn about area wildlife, including snakes, turtles and fish. Red Oak also offers a number of trails that take walkers through several different types of habitats, including prairie and marsh.
DOWNTOWN BATAVIA SCULPTURES
Several sculptures adorn the streets of downtown Batavia, which sits squarely on the Fox. Perched on Donovan Bridge are pieces like “Spintronic,” a vibrant work in stainless steel and glass. Colorful discs catch beams of light in an eye-catching display designed to highlight the power of electromagnetic forces and the relationship between a community and its people. Visitors can also stop to admire the towering piece known as “Nature’s Sounds of Harmony,” which is meant to call attention to the world’s beauty.
FABYAN WINDMILL
The Dutch-style windmill in Geneva’s Fabyan Forest Preserve hearkens back to a different time. Looming over the landscape, the 68-foot, five-story windmill was commissioned by Colonel George and Nelle Fabyan in 1914. Thanks to the diligent work of volunteers, the windmill has remained in pristine condition. Visitors are able to scope out its interior and learn more about its history with tours that take place from June through September.
Enjoy the natural beauty of the Sugar Grove Campus on June 1 at our Annual Foundation 5K/10K Trail Races. All proceeds benefit the Foundation Scholarship fund and help students reach their educational goals.

ISLAND PARK
A low stone bridge takes trail trekkers onto the island, which features a sizable brick pavilion and tree-themed playground. The green space allows visitors impressive views of the river as it flows beneath the immense Island Park Bike Bridge. Within easy walking distance lie the charming shops and restaurants of Geneva’s downtown.
FESTIVAL PARK
This Elgin space is aptly named, acting as both a local park and entertainment venue for outdoor events. In addition to bike trail access, areas for fishing and a splash pad, Festival Park includes plenty of places to relax and enjoy nature. Tucked in among the foliage stands a bronze sculpture that celebrates childhood friendships with its depiction of a boy and girl joyously playing together.

VETERANS SERENITY PARK
A flame burns eternal at this Oswego park, which pays tribute to all those who have served in the country’s armed forces. Protected by a rock ledge, the flame can be seen through a cascading water feature. Nearby benches allow visitors to sit and reflect or take in the peaceful setting, which includes a butterfly garden.
HUDSON CROSSING PARK
Barn quilts get a new look, one that can endure the elements, at Oswego’s Hudson Crossing Park. Affixed to the fence that surrounds this riverfront park, the pieces are representative of a community art project that takes place at the city’s PrairieFest held each June. Those who visit the park can enjoy not only traditional designs but landscape scenes that dazzle with color and whimsy.

A LESSON EXEMPLIFIED BY DR. WILL 28 28 26 P 26 P P W
Can exercise really keep you young? Ask Will. He is 95 years young and rides his threewheel bike 2,500-plus miles a year along the Fox River Bike Trail. If you have ever been fortunate enough to talk with him while on the trail, he certainly told you how much he loves his bicycle and has been known to allow people to give it a test ride.
As a retired physician, this spunky man has always understood the importance of fitness for both mental and physical health.
He and his wife Ginny were ahead of their time with healthy eating and consistent exercising in their younger years. Both loved cycling and would take their children on long excursions all over Illinois.
Recently Will traded his [worn out] bike in for an electric assist three-wheel bike to
provide a little help in getting up a steep hill near his home in Batavia. He smiles when he explains, “In 20 years I may not be as strong as I am today and I may need a little assistance to get all the way to the new Whole Foods they are building in St. Charles.”
If you question the studies that proclaim remaining physically active as we grow older keeps our muscles and immune system robust, think of Dr. Will as he zooms past you on the trail. It should help answer any skepticism you may have.

TINY SHOPS DRAWING BIG
INTEREST
Taking a business from the kitchen table to an independent thriving storefront is a leap larger than the Grand Canyon. Rather than relying on faith, local communities are putting in the effort to support startups.
Local business leaders in Batavia, McHenry and Berwyn have embraced the idea of an incubator project providing small shops located together to draw visitors. The communities have created a village of what at first looks like backyard sheds. Beyond the location, the business community supports the retailers with support and networking, allowing the businesses to test the waters and gather retail experience that will ideally lead to future brick-and-mortar businesses.
McHenry Riverwalk Shoppes
There’s a buzz in the air with the return for a second year of the McHenry Riverwalk Shops, a collection of 10 independent businesses open May 3 to Dec. 3. The shops are open Friday, Saturday and Sundays.
Since the launch of the shops last summer the community has embraced the venue, explained Amy Humbracht, director of chamber outreach and economic growth for the McHenry Chamber of Commerce. She said there were 29 businesses vying to be part of the venue’s 10 locations this summer.
“So many people are excited,” Humbracht said.
This year, the collection of 10 shops will feature a variety that includes Patina Wine Shop, Kest Jewelry, The Bumble Bread Company and a tiny outpost of Marvin’s Toy Store, which has a shop location in Crystal Lake.
Located near the Riverwalk Shoppes is another new addition, Rita’s Italian Ice, a perfect complement to a warm summer day.
Some of the shops are adding Thursday hours to complement the weekly Pearl Street Market, featuring local vendors and live music concerts. The market opens at 5 p.m. and concerts start at 7 p.m.
Batavia Boardwalk
Now in its fourth season, the Batavia Boardwalk on Wilson Street in downtown Batavia has helped several businesses start tiny and blossom into larger retail spaces in Batavia and throughout the Tri-Cities.
This year’s tiny shops will include Jodi Mac Sweets & Treats, the unique jewelry and art of Morbid Mementos, Big Bear Sunglasses and Homerun Hot Dogs & Lemonade. Shoppers will find plenty of treats and unusual wares to explore as they visit the shops Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 10 through Dec. 22.
For those riding through town on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. visit Batavia’s Indoor Market, open through May 11, and starting May 18 visit the Batavia Farmers Market outdoors on North River Street between Wilson and Spring streets. The market includes fresh produce as well as meats, eggs, baked goods and handmade items.

STEER INTO THE DOWNTOWN GROOVE
The Fox River Trail offers a scenic ride, but sometimes one needs to venture off the path in the name of good coffee, browse through vintage home décor and grab a lunch, too. Here’s a pair of downtowns well worth a pause in the trail and a chance to refuel too.
Downtown Oswego
Riding to the south make a point to stop and visit downtown Oswego with its shops, restaurants and calendar full of events throughout the year.
“We have two coffee shops, an ice cream store, several restaurants and some very quaint retail stores to purchase gifts, clothing and items for your home to check out and shop at,” said Angie Hibben, president and CEO of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce, with its offices located in downtown Oswego. “We love to meet new people at our businesses in downtown Oswego.”
The community’s economic development has been hard at work and it shows with several new businesses settling into the community to add to its vibrant feel as you take a walk through the bustling downtown. The Country Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the downtown from June through September. Check out the full calendar of events and a directory of merchants at oswegodowntown.org.
Downtown Geneva
With every visit to downtown Geneva, it seems there’s something new to explore from delicious restaurants, decadent desserts and boutiques boasting style for your closet and your coffee table.
From fine dining to casual fare, the restaurants in downtown Geneva will have you planning a return trip. Grab a seat and dine al fresco or pick up lunch to-go and find a shady spot to enjoy the sport of people watching along Third Street. For a lighter treat go for an ice cream cone, a coffee or dive into the multiple sweet spots where chocolate, edible cookie dough and ice cream topped by a cloud of cotton candy will satisfy a sweet tooth.
Join in the fun during one of the street festivals in the summer or a Sunday morning at the Geneva French Market in the downtown Metra parking lot. The market is open April through November.

The Big Brave, a cheeseburger served up at Old Republic Kitchen and Bar, in Elgin, is made with locally sourced certified Black Angus beef. Topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and American cheese, the juicy burger comes with fries or coleslaw. Just as hearty but plant-based is the Beyond Brave Vegan Burger, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado, on a pretzel bun, also with fries or coleslaw. Or try the housesmoked brisket sandwich with Tillamook® cheddar, grilled onions + bbq sauce on a toasted bun.
Check out the Neapolitan style wood-fired pizza at Gia Mia, farm-to-fork restaurants with locations in both St. Charles and Geneva. “They’re certified Neapolitan and cooked at 800 degrees, wood-fired to a crisp on the outside,” says Marketing and Events Specialist Susan Hellman.
Gia Mia’s signature dish that fills the bill for heartier fare is its Paccheri Vodka Pasta — Italian sausage, roasted tomatoes, garlic, chili flakes and crispy prosciutto, smothered in vodka sauce, covering a plate of giant rigatoni.

Pan-Asian fare can be hearty, too. Check out Orange Peel Chicken at moto imōto Asian Kitchen in St. Charles, featuring stir-fried chicken in garlic chili sauce with orange zest and broccoli, served over moto imōto’s signature fried rice, says Hellman, who represents both Gia Mia and moto imōto.
Stockholm’s Restaurant & Brewery, a staple in Geneva for years, serves up a filling, made-from-scratch Beef Tenderloin Risotto. “It’s grown-up comfort food, and hands-down, a guest favorite,” says Marketing Manager Rebecca Moore. You get two 3-ounce filet mignon medallions grilled to order, then smothered in a burgundy wine sauce, topped with slivered green onions, over made-fromscratch creamy mixed mushroom risotto. Comes with soup or salad.
Another hearty dish popular with guests is the eatery’s Handmade Swedish Meatballs, smothered in rich, hearty sherry cream sauce, and served with mashed potatoes and fresh steamed vegetables, says Hellman. Also comes with soup or salad.
At Hacienda Real in Geneva, if you order the Molcajete you’ll be served a bursting hot lava rock filled with grilled steak, grilled chicken, shrimp, chorizo, ranchera salsa, cactus, onions, and panela cheese, served with rice and beans. “It’s a little bit of all our best proteins,” says owner Carlos Arechiga. “It’s not only delicious and filling, but eye-catching to watch it coming out of the kitchen.”

Something sweet after a meal is always a treat. Here are a few suggestions:
Old Republic Kitchen and Bar is known for its homemade hot fried donut holes. Tossed in cinnamon sugar and cream glaze for dipping on the side.
Where to start here? Batavia Creamery rotates more than 150 different ice creams throughout the year. The independent ice cream shop makes sundaes, shakes, waffle cones (they bake their own) and ice cream pies and cakes. Owner Kirk Jansons suggests a customer favorite cappuccino crunch - ice cream with a thick fudge ribbon and toffee bits, or honey roasted peanut butter ice cream with a peanut butter ribbon and chocolate covered honeycomb pieces.
Hacienda Real’s traditional churros are house-made, tossed in cinnamon and sugar and served in little churro carts with seasonal ice cream and caramel sauce. The eatery also serves up fried ice cream - vanilla bean ice cream breaded with cereal flakes and deep fried so it’s crispy to the bite but cold on the inside.

DINING ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
Old Republic offers its Elote Shrimp Tacos. “Our most popular lighter fare option is the chicken Fresca Wrap,” says co-owner Nicholas Smith. It’s got grilled chicken, lettuce, Tillamook cheddar, pico de gallo, avocado, crunchy tortilla strips plus chipotle mayo in a whole wheat tortilla.
moto imōto’s Classic and Signature sushi rolls offer lots of lighter fare choices. The Classic, a more simplified version, includes one or two ingredients, like the California Rolls, which include snow crab, cucumber avocado. The Avocado + Cucumber Rolls are sushi rice, avocado and cucumber. Choose from 7 versions of the Signature rolls, like Tempura Sweet Potato, which includes sweet potato, asian pear, avocado and red pepper puree.
One of Stockholm’s guest favorites on the lighter side is its Salmon Fiesta Salad. “It’s super healthy and our most popular salad,” says Moore. Grilled to perfection, the lightly seasoned fresh salmon is grilled to perfection, then laid on a bed of fresh mixed greens tossed in a cilantro vinaigrette then topped with diced tomatoes, avocado, red & yellow peppers, feta cheese, sliced red onion, and crumbled tortilla chips.
Another lighter dish, this one at Hacienda Real, is the restaurant’s 3 different ceviche varieties - traditional shrimp, fish, and octopus ceviche. Traditional ceviche cured in lime juice, slightly dressed in cocktail broth, mixed with pico de gallo, cucumbers, avocado and radish. Ceviche de pulpo en salsa negra is Grilled octopus ceviche covered with our chef’s special salsa negra, mixed with cucumber salad, avocado and radish. Ceviche de pescado is “colima” finely chopped fish, cooked and marinated with lime juice, tossed with a variety of vegetables, garnished with avocado and radish.
