From our Geneva home to yours

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the holiday elves have been very busy creating a magical experience in Geneva for its 52nd Christmas Walk on December 6 at 6 pm in downtown Geneva and House Tour festivities December 6 and 7. Among the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts will roast over open fires, carolers will fill the night air with seasonal favorites and a live nativity scene will take place. Dazzling window displays, brimming with gift ideas, invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve holiday refreshments. We are happy to announce that Geneva has a new Christmas Tree on the Courthouse Lawn. Mother Nature took a toll on the Great Tree, that many of you are familiar with, and we had to remove it for safety reasons. So, please join us in this year’s TREElightful Celebration, where the new tree will be lit and surprises will be revealed. We know that this Norway Spruce will become a tradition in our pictures for years to come. This popular and family friendly event offers visitors a very merry Friday evening full of hometown traditions as well as special treats —the arrival of Santa Lucia, Christmas cookies, the Great Tree lighting, homemade candy canes, and… a visit from Santa with the opening of his Geneva Home on James Street.

Treat yourself to the Christmas House Tour on Friday and Saturday. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decorations, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illuminate when local decorators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holiday magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva and mini Scentcerely Yours candle is included in the $35 price of the ticket. Both events are presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Geneva, sponsors and community volunteers. Proceeds from the house tour go to decorating the downtown for the holidays. Let us show you our warmth, hospitality and spirt as a visit to Geneva becomes part of your holiday celebration. As the Mass proceeds and sunrise approaches, the church becomes progressively brighter, illumined by the sun as our faith is illumined by Christ. Bartel Family Home

2233 Wildflower Court

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.) turn south on Rt. 31. Turn west on Fabyan Pkwy. Turn right on Bent Tree Dr. Turn right on Kings Ct. Turn left on Wildflower Ct. Situated on a quiet cul-de-sac amid towering trees, this cedar and stone home is decked out for the season. Built in 1996, this 3,508 square foot home exudes hospitality and lightheartedness. The homeowners are creative, enjoy projects and appreciate a flea market find. Many of those finds have been incorporated into the home during remodels, both inside and out. Admire the front door, with unique sidelights that open to allow a cool breeze through the home. Five years ago, the stairway was remodeled, adding the Juliet balcony. A lovely chandelier hangs high, but can be lowered when needed. Peek into the living room where the color palette mimics the two hanging pictures. Commissioned by the homeowner, the one on the left represents the family’s twins and the one on the right, the younger son. Shades of navy and coral furnishings shimmer from bright light, that streams through a three-sided bay window. Two Victorian walnut chairs, covered in horsehair and velvet, flank a table set for holiday revelers in the dining room. The homeowner’s great-grandfather received those chairs as payment for a plumbing job, completed during the Depression. Down the hallway, you pass the functional laundry room and an exquisite powder room with a rounded vessel sink and pendant that casts fascinating shadows. Seabrook wallpaper was a top preference of the homeowner. Once a bedroom, the office first became a computer and music room when this family of five was all under one roof. Our decorators have trimmed the porch with greenery and color, ensuring the celebration is both in, and out. Guests feel cozy and warm, and are treated to glistening skies, with bright white stars, that look down on the snow-covered trees. Perhaps a keen eye may catch a glimpse of St. Nicholas. Stockings flank the stone fireplace; even the four-legged family members have a spot to receive treats from Santa Paws. As all come together in the comfy family room, stories of Christmas past and present are shared. Creamy custom cabinets wrap the perimeter of the refinished kitchen, offering plenty of storage. You can almost smell the aroma of fresh baked cookies that were prepared at the impressive leathered quartzite countertop island and then baked in the Wolf range. The kitchen was freshened up in 2006 and redone in 2016 by Lifestyle Design-Bobbi Alderfer and PB Kitchen Design. The connection from the kitchen to the outdoor living area is an integral part of the design. A large window above the sink brings in ample light and a splendid view of the three-season porch and backyard. A favorite flea market treasure is the hand-carved “B” door leading to the finished basement, where the children’s friends and teammates have gathered for years. Recently remodeled,

14

evidence of a crafty needle is seen in all the fabric and patterns located in the sewing area. Many friends and relatives have received aprons made with great affection. Entertaining is a breeze with the second kitchen, originally called “the summer kitchen” when the children were young. When it was too hot to bake upstairs, the downstairs provided a respite. An antique railway cart is repurposed as a coffee table. Clever use of space is made, under the stairs, with built-ins and petite closets. Wines in the wine cellar are stored in chimney flue liners. Memories of a winning Cubs season and well-earned running medals, grace the walls. These homeowners have certainly put lots of love into all the renovations done over the years. “It finally feels like ours”, and they are thrilled to have shared it with each of you this holiday season.

Carl and Sandi Bowgren’s Home

102 McKinley Avenue

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.) going west, turn right on McKinley Ave. Home is on left-hand side. This English cottage family home built in 1928, is loaded with personality, warmth and charm. Family mementos and photographs have been wonderfully blended with antiques and relaxing furnishings to create a comfortable home full of laughter and love. Opening the vintage door to the inside, the foyer holds a small closet, concealed cleverly by a barn door. The 1928 staircase leads to the second floor. A remodeled bathroom provides for a better flow. Technically, a three-bedroom home, the homeowners transformed one of the rooms into a magnificent walk-in closet. While much of the lighting has been changed, the closet light fixture remains as does the cedar scent. In the first bedroom, a neutral color palette, punctuated by sunny yellows, is inviting on a cold winter’s night. The cottage’s pitched roof makes for interesting architectural elements in both bedchambers. Antique lovers will be pleased to discover many items of interest as you continue your tour downstairs. The half-bath originally served as pass thru from the landing, as you entered the home from the side backdoor. Follow the 1920’s oak flooring, through the untouched foyers, into the living room. Windows are plentiful, allowing natural light to highlight collectibles on the built-in bookcases. A fire crackles while the family gathers around the lush green tree decorated in sentimentality. The focal point of the dining room is the china cabinets. Years and years of keeping beautiful serving pieces safe, they now hold place settings from the homeowner’s mother and grandmother, including items from Sweden, where Sandi’s grandmother hailed from, at the age of 13. She was scheduled to come over on the Titanic, but to everyone’s benefit, those plans changed. Clocks on the wall keep time in four time zones and in Iceland, where children and grandchildren are living. Bringing the family together, for a cozy Christmas meal, is what is wished to Kris Kringle this time of the year. The heart of the home is the kitchen. Although small, it serves a large purpose. The homeowners wanted this room to reflect the style of the rest of 102 McKinley. They removed stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, replacing appliances with white and the countertops with butcher block. A farmhouse sink is surrounded by original wood cabinetry. When opened, you find small surprises and hidden storage. The beadboard ceiling mimics the one in the sunroom. Take notice of the unique hanging birch branches. Decorated in holiday splendor, it is created by the homeowner and changed every season. Far before Sandi and Carl moved to this home, their families arrived from Sweden. Sandi’s grandfather’s motto was “To stay young, stay with the young!” He lived up to this, lending his talents as Santa, and his wife as Mrs. Claus, for more than 40 years. Sandi honors him with a very special book, set out for all of you to enjoy.

The outside of the home, is just as lovely as the inside. Our decorators, Geneva Garden Club, have added to the Bowgren’s passion of design, making this home one that you, and Santa, or as he is known in Sweden, the Tomten, will certainly remember.

The Howlett Home

218 N. Fourth Street

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.) turn north on Third St. Turn west on Ford St. Turn south on Fourth St. *can turn north on Fourth from Rt. 38 if traveling west on Rt. 38. Found on a friendly neighborhood street, this 2008 home has a bit of whimsy at every turn. A luminary lit path welcomes you to the custom home of the Howlett’s. As you enter the expansive foyer, architectural details such as transom windows, plantation shutters, oak hardwood floors and iron spindles, that lead to the second floor, catch your eye. If only the Dough Boy Table could talk and tell the stories it has seen and heard. At one point these types of tables were used for storing flour and rising dough for daily bread-making. Basket beige walls surround the stacked stone fireplace where not only are the stockings hung with care, but cross stitched with great care, by the homeowner. Thanks to Floral Wonders, it is difficult to pick just one room to celebrate in. Golden tans and deep browns pair with the rich crimson patterned rug, making for a warm and inviting family room. Eleven-foot ceilings add to the openness of the space. Proximity to the kitchen allows family & friends to socialize while the chef is preparing a turkey with all the trimmings. Entering the master, a sign highlighting zip codes where the family has lived is displayed; they have called Geneva home since 1997. The color palette of white accents and subtle decor combine to create a tranquil and relaxed feel. In the armoire, the homeowner’s own handmade quilts mingle with cherished ones bestowed to her from an earlier generation, dating from 1915. Favorites are laid on the bed to admire. A blue and white color palette brings a calm, coastal feel to this traditional bathroom. White wainscoting adds character to the space, the Carrera marble countertops give a feel of elegance. Heated slate floors are a practical and beautiful choice; eliciting smiles on a chilly, winter morning. On the way to the kitchen, family heirlooms and memories grace the built-in shelves. Take special notice of the hanging quilt, fashioned in honor of Great Aunt Mabel, who hailed from Kansas. Made for her 100th birthday, this 1,528-piece pattern is appropriately named “Kansas Trouble”. While structurally one room, a splash of color visually divides the dining area from the kitchen. A magnificent tin tile ceiling serves as the focal point of the space. The table is set for a casual gathering, making clever use of the homeowner’s collection of pig cutting boards. Interesting items, found at flea markets, may be spotted nestled in corners. A wall of French doors allows natural light to shine on the kitchen’s white cabinets and quartz countertops. An antiqued granite island provides the perfect serving area for a delicious holiday dinner.

The festivities continue onto the brick patio as the aroma of Christmas lingers in the air.

The Sorden Family Home

1530 Kaneville Road

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south/ west on Kaneville Rd. Home is on left-hand side. Sheltered under thick trees, almost hidden from the road, sits this historic farmhouse and barn. Through the renovations, the homeowners preserved the early 1900’s home’s charming simplicity, but also brought it into the 21st century by opening the layout and adding French doors and windows for extra light. The result is a timeless home with modern amenities that cater to the family’s lifestyle. Once inside, warm hues invite you in. Past generations are remembered in the living room. A touching WW II memorial, for the homeowner’s father, hangs on the wall. Grandparents lovingly sat in the medallion back loveseat so long ago. Preserved perfectly, a great aunt’s baby buggy graces the corner. Cherished pictures and memories find a home on the built-ins, but also throughout the home. The fireplace, bordered with fresh greenery, holds a dancing fire that will be extinguished long before Father Christmas makes his grand entrance. A bank of windows gives view to a winter wonderland. Always welcoming guests to their home, the playroom encourages joy and frolic. Made for his only granddaughter, grandpa crafted the doll house and Victorian furniture inside. The addition of a larger family room and kitchen have only bettered the entertaining areas for this family. On the way to the kitchen, glimpse into the dining room, set for Christmas Eve dinner. Each piece of furniture was discovered on flea market hunts. Over 200 pieces of Waterford crystal blend with great-grandmother’s glass collection alongside Bing & Grondahl Christmas plates. Each represents a year of the Sorden’s marriage. Take notice of the hand-painted design over the door. A pass through to the kitchen, once used for entertaining conveniences, is now a secret window for little ones to spy on the gathering. So much to see in this kitchen. Bright colors and amusing signs illicit smiles from those who enter. Perfectly functional for preparing a meal for 2 or 202. Don’t forget to look up at the unique, custom fan. This home is designed for parties, and the kitchen was planned to improve flow and convenience. Say “Howdy Dowdy” to the barn. Entering, you may think it is 1950 and have the urge to order a cherry soda. You could spend hours just studying all the memorabilia. The first gift from her daughter was the vintage Coca-Cola ad picture above the booth. A mom and daughter enjoying a Coke, but only one uses a straw, just like this real-life mom and daughter. On way to the “party room” meander through the barn. Spot a sauna, a full kitchen and an extensive car collection that flows into the bathroom. Then what to your wondering eyes should appear, but table after table set with Christmas cheer. Our decorators have planned the ultimate holiday celebration. From fun to fabulous, you may be tempted to sit right down and join the festivities.

And just when you think you have seen it all, an authentic Chicago lamp post awaits you as you walk outside, lighting your way to the next home.

Home of the Walls Family

358 Vonder Lane

Directions: From Rt. 38 (State St.), turn south on Rt. 25. Follow Rt. 25 as it curves. Turn left at Fox Run entrance, turn left onto Fox Run Dr. and follow as it curves. Turn second right onto Vonder Ln. An exquisite grand door entices you into this exceptional abode. Built in 2004, this home is full of precision workmanship. The terra cotta tile, archways and wrought iron are a reference to the homeowner’s Spanish heritage. Crown molding, transom windows and glazed ceilings are just a few of the WOWs you will see throughout the home. This 5,800 square foot home was completely designed by the family, with entertaining top of mind. Whether it is a pool bash, movie night for the kids or an adult dinner event, every aspect is covered. The living room is a favorite place for each of the children. Reading, studying or just chilling-each one has their preferred seating spot. Passing by a half-bath, French doors open to the office. Imagine the melodious chords resonating from the guitar. Step into the family room to admire its floor-to-nineteenfoot-ceiling stone fireplace. While the snow gently falls, an impressive wall of windows provides a front row seat to catch a peek at the jolly old elf with his nine tiny reindeer. A neutral, oversized sectional anchors the seating area; a perfect setup for lively conversations, and impromptu caroling, with family and friends this season. A village in southern Spain is exhibited on the catwalk in the oversized painting ‘The Cliffs of Ronda’. This spacious kitchen has everything a cook could want: professional grade appliances, smart storage and plenty of prep space. Vineyard Chic redesigned the countertops, island and lighting in this room adding to the fabulousness that was already existing. A creamy white island is mixed with cherry cabinets, but, the kitchen feels cohesive because the same counters are used to top the surfaces. A farmhouse sink holds court on the custom maple island, the other side of which has barstools for additional seating space. A pair of pendant lights draw out the metallic accents of the faucets and cabinet handles. Hanging painted Spanish plates are just a few more influences of Spain sprinkled in the home. The outdoor patio is a little slice of paradise in this home’s backyard, a place for enjoying meals al fresco or roasting marshmallows. Follow the maple floors, installed by Great Western Flooring, to the lower-level which has a little bit of

18

everything. A finished basement serves as a bar, extra living room, workout area, a place for overnight guests and a movie room. Recessed lights brighten the space. Never knowing when a spontaneous party may happen, the bar is stocked. The wine cellar is protected by a custom door. Look carefully for more nods to Spain. Perfect for relaxing in front of a favorite holiday classic, squishy recliners and a giant screen turn this spot into a comfortable home theater. Special photos line the walls showing the love of family, past and present. Welcome the outdoor beauty and landscaping as you proceed outside and into a wonder of lights, glancing back towards the splendor of the Walls Family Home.
