Hiking in the New Year By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com Kendall County area residents of all ages welcomed 2017 by participating in the annual Kendall County New Year’s Day Hike on Sunday morning. This year’s hike was held at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville. There was no charge to participate in the approximately two-mile excursion into the scenic forest preserve, but all those in attendance were asked to bring two cans of soup. Event organizers donated half the cans of soup to the Kendall County Community Food Pantry in Yorkville, while the other cans were placed in a communal pot and warmed up along with some hot dogs over an open fire for a posthike treat for all participating hikers.

Sheriff’s office opens Drug Collection Unit It offers a place for residents to dispose of old medication SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a grant from CVS Pharmacy to install a Drug Collection Unit. The new unit will be located in the lobby of the Public Safety Center at 1102 Cornell Lane in Yorkville. The unit will provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications, including all prescription medications. Any fees affiliated with an approved drop site through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will be paid for through the Kendall County Sheriff’s Drug and Asset Forfeiture Fund and will not cost the taxpayers of Kendall County any expenses. The unit is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. excluding county holidays. In the event a request is needed for after hours, citizens are urged to call the sheriff’s office non-emergency number, 630-553-5856, and make a request for an after-hour drop-off. Medications can be dropped off with no questions asked. Kendall County residents and CVS/pharmacy customers can also inquire about the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program at the toll-free phone number 866-559-8830 or by visiting cvs.com/safercommunities. The new unit is intended to reduce
the amount of unneeded medicine in residents’ homes and decrease prescription drug abuse, which has soared in recent years, especially among teenagers. More than 70 percent of teenagers say it is easy to get prescription drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinets, according to a 2014 Partnership for Drug-Free Kids study. Sheriff Dwight Baird said, “The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is proud to partner with CVS Pharmacy and we thank them for their commitment to help the residents of Kendall County reduce the amount of unneeded medicine in our community. Safely disposing of unused medication is critical to protecting our children and our environment. With the community’s help we can remove unwanted prescription drugs from their homes, which can help prevent experimentation, addiction, overdose and even death.” Senior Services Deputy Wayne Dial added, “This program is a great way for senior citizens in our community to have one central location to safely and properly dispose of medication that is no longer needed.” The new unit will also help the citizens of Kendall County to prevent the contamination of local landfills and water supplies from unused medication. The Kendall County solid waste coordinator, Marlin Hartman, said, “Expired or unwanted medicines, if flushed down the toilet or drain, are a source of pollution in wastewater. Sewage treatment plants are not designed to deal with drugs; these chemicals can be released into streams, lakes,

Impacts of these medications being flushed have already been identified in biological samples of aquatic wildlife. CVS Pharmacy is the sole retail pharmacy sponsor of this program, which builds on the company’s Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program. “CVS Pharmacy is dedicated to collaborating with organizations like the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids and local law enforcement to prevent the abuse of unwanted and expired medication,” said Josh Flum, senior vice president of retail pharmacy at CVS Health. “The installment of drug collection receptacles is part of our ongoing commitment to battle prescription drug abuse in the U.S. and to help people in the communities we serve on their path to better health.” CVS Pharmacy also assists law enforcement by supporting local drug take back events and promoting local drug disposal collection sites. CVS Pharmacy has conducted drug collection campaigns utilizing its retail locations, including several National Drug Take Back Day events. Law enforcement agencies which operate their own ongoing collection site programs can also arrange to have the address and hours of their operations posted in local CVS Pharmacy stores.

SENIOR NEWS Kendall County Senior Providers donates to FVOAS SHAW MEDIA Fox Valley Older Adult Services is the 2016 recipient of the annual Kendall County Senior Providers donation of $500. KCSP is dedicated to educate, interact and support inter-generational opportunities within the senior community. Members are from government funded agencies, nonprofit organizations and businesses.
This donation will enhance the quality of life for the many seniors who attend FVOAS’ Adult Day Service by providing iPods and simple games. The minds, bodies and spirits of Adult Day Service clients are enriched by the influence of music and game playing. There are tested results that programs that incorporate music and game playing have been very successful when used with dementia and Alzheimer’s clients.
The donation will also enable the Home Services department to purchase gloves and gate belts for use by their aides in serving seniors in Kendall County. FVOAS is a member of KCSP. FVOAS, through its Senior Center, Home Services and Adult Day Service, offers activities and services to seniors in Kendall County along with Kane, DeKalb, LaSalle and Bureau counties. A wider populace of seniors, who may
have previously not qualified, can now be served through the Private Home Services program. Through community support, FVOAS will continue to assist many seniors in living vital and independent lives and avoiding unnecessary and early nursing home placement. Asclepias tuberosa named perennial plant of 2017 SHAW MEDIA With all the “buzz” about bees and butterflies, the Perennial Plant Association is celebrating a plant known for its ability to support birds and insects, including a beloved North American native butterfly. The association has just announced Asclepias tuberosa as its 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year. Commonly known as butterfly weed, this long-lived and striking perennial is native to much of the continental United States, along with Canadian provinces Ontario and Quebec. “With vibrant orange, red, and yellow flowers that seem to jump out at you, butterfly weed is a great addition to a sunny garden with average to dry soils,” says University of Illinois Ex-

tension educator Martha Smith. “As the common name suggests, these plants are butterfly magnets. They also have a medicinal history as a treatment for pleurisy, a common ailment in early colonial times, causing wheezing, coughing and great pain due to the inflammation of the pleura around the lungs. Asclepias tuberosa reportedly was so effective in treating this ailment it earned the common name pleurisy root.” Butterfly weed is a member of the Apocynaceae or milkweed family. This family includes plants with a milky sap poisonous to most insects. Unlike other milkweeds, Asclepias tuberosa contains little sap.

Invasive species workshop trains first detectors in Ill. SHAW MEDIA The 2017 Illinois First Detector Workshop on invasive plants, diseases and insects will be offered in 2017 at eight Illinois sites, including Lisle. Now in its fifth year, the workshop is being offered through University of Illinois Extension and coordinated in conjunction with the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS), the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and the Morton Arboretum. The one-day course teaches participants how to report potential invasive threats. Topics this year include invasive plants and human health, oak tree diseases, and emerging invasive forest insects. The program focuses on current and new invasive pests, but also provides updates on previously covered topics, according to Kelly Estes, CAPS coordinator. The popular hands-on portion of the workshop allows participants to examine invasive species samples in detail and learn identification techniques that will help them to distinguish these invasive pests in the field. “This program increases the eyes and ears in the field,” Estes said. “The threat of invasive species is large, and we can’t get to every corner of the state. Having many people take an interest in learning more about invasive species and how to report them is fantastic.” In four years, 900 people have taken the workshop, and an estimated 108,000 additional people have become more

• PERENNIAL PLANT Continued from page 16
Thursday, January 5, 2017
The hairy leaves are 2 to 5 inches long, growing close together as they spiral up the hairy stem. Stems are branched near the top with flat clusters, or umbels, of many showy flowers in late spring through mid-July. “Butterfly weed flowers are easy to recognize because of their ‘five up and five down’ appearance,” Smith says. “Each flower has five colorful petals that hang down and five upright curved petals called hoods, each possessing one orange horn. When cross-pollinated, a dry fruit, called a follicle, forms. The mature follicle opens along one side to disperse the seeds.” Smith recommends deadheading Asclepias tuberosa to prevent reseeding, to keep the plants more attractive, and to promote a second flush of color later in the season. Asclepias tuberosa makes excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. “Cut stems when more than half the flowers are open; buds do not open well once the stem is cut. Searing the cut end is not necessary to prevent sap from seeping out of the stems. Instead, cut flowers have a good vase life if they are immediately placed in warm water after cutting and either placing stems in a refrigerator for 12 hours or transferring the stems to cold water. This process eliminates what little sap may be produced,” Smith says. Butterfly weed is hardy to zones 4-9 and reaches 2 to 3 feet high with a 2-foot spread. Smith cautions gardeners to be patient, as butterfly weed is slow to emerge in the spring. Young plants grow from a single central stem, but with age, plants will develop additional shoots at the base. Mature plants do not transplant well, although they can be divided carefully in early spring be-
fore new growth begins. “Dig carefully,” Smith says, “but if enough root is left behind, they will regrow. Don’t cut back in late fall, rather wait until early spring. To prepare young butterfly weed for the winter, put mulch down around them to prevent frost heaving.” Butterfly weed is often grown from seed. Experts report 50-80 percent germination if fresh cleaned seed is used. “If germination does not occur after three to four weeks, provide a two- to four-week cooling period,” Smith says. “Collected seed will result in flower color variation. To ensure color, purchase seed from a reputable source. Propagation through root cuttings can be used to ensure quality from forms showing merit. Cutting back once, early in the growth cycle, will promote compact growth.” Since Asclepias tuberosa is a native prairie plant, butterfly weed is quite comfortable in meadow gardens, native plantings and wildlife sanctuaries, but it is finding its way into semi-formal to formal urban gardens. Smith suggests planting it in large masses, for an unrivaled display of eye-popping orange flower color. Orange butterfly weed pairs well with summer blooming Phlox, Hemerocallis sp., Liatris spicata, Echinacea sp., Salvia sp., and most June/July sun-loving perennials. Another bonus is that if the garden is visited by deer, they will leave Asclepias tuberosa alone. Many bees, wasps, ants, butterflies, and beetles visit butterfly weed, as well as hummingbirds. All members of the milkweed family serve as larval food for the monarch butterfly ( Danaus plexippus ), queen butterfly (Danaus gilppus ), and the milkweed tussock moth ( Euchaetes egle ). “Let them munch on butterfly weed and you will be rewarded with these ‘flowers of the air,’” Smith says.

By SUSAN ONEILL news@kendallcountynow.com Kaneville’s own folk musician and storyteller Lee Murdock welcomes friend and fellow singer/songwriter/ musician Bill Camplin to share the stage with him for his annual Hometown Concert on Jan. 7. Sponsored by the Kaneland Arts Initiative – or KAI – the concert will take place in the Kaneland High School auditorium, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the initiative. “Lee’s concert has a warm place in our hearts,” KAI Executive Director Maria Dripps-Paulson said. Murdock’s Hometown Concert was the first performing arts series event that KAI held in the auditorium not connected to the Fine Arts Festival, she said. The audience is a nice mix of the Kaneland community, and of Murdock’s own following. “My favorite part is the storytelling,” Dripps-Paulson said. “You can’t be a folk musician without having a story.” The concert will include a solo performance by Murdock and one by Camplin. Following an intermission, the two musicians will share the stage

About the arts initiative The Kaneland Arts Initiative is an organization of Kaneland Community Unit School District 302 that encourages people’s involvement in, appreciation of, and support for artistic endeavors and fostering the development of artistic abilities, its website states. For information, visit https://kanelandartsinitiative.org. with no set plan other than to entertain. It will be a mix of songs they settle on, as well as taking requests from the audience.
“This is what really shows their musicianship,” Dripps-Paulson said. Murdock said the audience seems to enjoy this part year after year, partly because they never know what to expect, and he doesn’t either. It’s very informal and makes for a more intimate set. Those who are familiar with Murdock’s music will recall some of their favorites, as well as being treated to a few new pieces from his latest and 21st album, “Loving Light.” Camplin began playing professionally in the Milwaukee area in the late 1960s. An integral part of the folk music scene in Milwaukee for many years, Camplin and his wife, Kitty, in 1985 opened their own restaurant and listening room, Café Carpe, in nearby Fort Atkinson. With the café, Camplin has become a big supporter of the performing arts in his own right. The two musicians met about 30 years ago when Murdock began playing at the café. Murdock said he is looking forward to introducing his friend from “abroad,” and playing with him in what Murdock calls one of the best musical venues in northern Illinois. Hometown Concert will include some of his own songs reflecting the human condition and his own perspectives on life, as well as some with a political bent. He also draws on the work of other songwriters, including Bob Dylan, who have influenced him over the years. In addition to the musical performances, the show will include an exhibit of artwork from Harter Middle School students. Several of the students will be recognized by art teacher Suzanne Farr on stage for their work. KAI included this addition to the concert last year, and Dripps-Paulson said it was so well-received that they decided to include it again this year. Dripps-Paulson said it is a great opportunity for the students to have an authentic experience by showing their work in a gallery setting, where it is nicely framed and lit with professional lighting. She added that she likes the idea of pairing the students’ artwork with the performing arts, and hopes young people will take advantage of the free admission to experience the folk music. “I want young people to know that it’s a genre that they can enjoy,” she said.

Updated Farm Policy News website created SHAW MEDIA Fans of Keith Good’s Farmpolicy. com website who were sad to see it discontinued in 2015 will be happy to hear about his new University of Illinois blogsite. The site, farmpolicynews.illinois. edu, features topics of interest to Corn Belt farmers such as: land values, farm income variables, agricultural production estimates, Farm Bill developments, trade issues, biofuels news, regulatory proposals, and other topics that are impacting the agricultural economy. Good says he draws from many different resources when reviewing a topic to post on the site. “I use current newspaper articles, government reports, extension updates, Federal Reserve Bank reports, Congressional hearings, and news releases to disseminate easy-to-digest, informative posts.” The content of the new Farm Policy News blog is of interest to a diverse audience. The site was created to expand the reach of the popular “farm-
doc” and “farmdoc daily” efforts and supplement that information with timely and relevant policy news and economic information. Both “farmdoc” and “farmdoc daily” are managed by the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at U of I. How will the new site be different from Good’s former Farmpolicy.com? Good says, “Rather than a comprehensive update containing most of the developments in the latest news cycle, the updates at the new site will be more narrowly tailored to one particular topic that is currently in the news. In addition, unlike the old site, where updates were posted on a strict early-morning deadline each weekday, posts at the new site will be made about four times a week and will likely be posted at various times during the day.” Anyone interested in receiving regular updates can subscribe to Farm Policy News via an RSS feed or through social media including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

It’s meant to help cut cable and satellite bills SHAW MEDIA The Citizens Utility Board has released its first-ever guide to help TV viewers cut costs. The guide comes in response to public opinion polls that show Illinois consumers want lower cable and satellite TV bills.
“It’s obvious Illinois consumers are hungry for changes in the pay-TV industry, but reforms usually don’t come quickly,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “CUB’s guide focuses on what consumers can do today to help reduce their bills.” CUB’s Guide to Cutting Your TV Costs includes tips on how consumers can reduce TV bills and details the pros and cons of various market choices. Illinois consumers can visit www. cubcablecenter.com to receive a free copy of the guide.
CUB, a nonprofit utility watchdog created by Illinois Legislature, examined whether public polling supported consumer comments about cable service it had heard for decades. In the fall, the consumer group conducted a series of Google Consumer Surveys from randomly selected Illinoisans ages 25 and older. Each question was asked independently and had at least 1,000 respondents among people surfing the internet to read online content. The margin of error is no greater than 3.1 percent.
One of the surveys revealed that 75 percent of respondents with a pay-TV service said their bills were too expensive. Another survey found that 76.6 percent of customers who have “cut the cord” said they left their previous cable/satellite company also because of high bills. Illinois consumers also said they strongly support a series of reforms in the industry that would amount to a “Cable Customer’s Bill of Rights.” For information, call 800-669-5556 or visit www.citizensutilityboard.org.

OUR ATTITUDES
Trinity collects for South American preschools
There is a right way and a wrong way to look at everything. No one is perfect and more than likely all of us at one time or another has been guilty of looking at things with the wrong attitude. This would include the Bible.
WRONG ATTITUDES An indifferent attitude is the result of a do nothing, learn nothing, know nothing, and be nothing frame of mind. As a result, we are unconcerned about truth, do not care what the Bible says, and accept any and everything upon the grounds that it is OK with me. An attitude of selfishness is also a problem that we deal with, and because of it we often try to interpret scripture in the light of what we want it to say rather than what it says. An attitude of arrogance sometimes finds its way into our hearts. It is the attitude of “I am right and I cannot be wrong.” “This is an abomination to the Lord” (Proverbs16:5).
THE RIGHT ATTITUDE
The proper attitude that we should have at all times, especially when considering the Bible is humility. By humility we destroy our own will (Luke 9:23), and recognize God as our Superior and others as our equals (Philippians 2:3). We “study to show ourselves approved to God . . . accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), and once we have learned the truth, we will “humbly” receive it and obey it (James 1:21-22). hether you have given up on New Year’s resolutions or are chomping at the bit to put your new self-tracking device into operation, there are many simple and easy ways to improve your life in the New Year. Here are ten tips that will make your life happier and healthier this year: 1. Smile more, even when you don’t feel like it. 2. Do something nice for someone every day. 3. Start and end your day by remembering what you have to be thankful for. 4. Protect your health—it’s your most cherished asset, and without it nothing else matters. 5. Save something for a rainy day; you’ll be glad you did when you need it. 6. Learn something new every day; knowledge is power. 7. Exercise every day, even if it’s only going for a short walk. 8. Cultivate your friendships and remember that friendships don’t grow in isolation. 9. Cultivate better relationships with your family. 10. Cultivate a good relationship with God; pray and read scripture daily. Over the coming weeks, we will examine each of these tips in more detail, giving practical advice on how to make them part of our everyday lives. – Christopher Simon

Award winners to consider planting this spring All-America Selections names four vegetables and one flower for 2017 SHAW MEDIA Leaves have finished displaying their autumn color and have fallen, and gardens have been cleaned up to begin their winter rest. Gardeners can finally enjoy a well-deserved break, but it may not be long before the anticipation of spring creeps in. “There is no quicker way to beat those winter blues than starting your garden planning early,” says University of Illinois Extension educator Bruce Black. “Garden planning starts by thumbing through paper and online plant catalogs looking for something new, yet tested. The All-America Selections are a nice starting place.” All-America Selections (AAS) is an independent, nonprofit organization that tests new varieties every year through 88 registered private and public trial gardens located around the United States and Canada. Independent AAS judges award overall national winners and winners in specific geographic regions. Illinois,
Five 2017 AAS Winners have been announced, including four vegetables and one flower. They are: Celosia Asian Garden (Celosiaargentea var. Okra Candle Fire F1 ( Abelmoschus esculentus var. Candle Fire F1): Candle Fire is a bright red, rounded okra noted for high productivity, pod taste, tenderness, and texture, as well as possible ornamental usage. Candle Fire is disease resistant for hot and humid climates. National Vegetable Award Winner. Pea Patio Pride (Pisum sativum var. Bridges will bust this Saturday SHAW MEDIA Join the excitement as more than 30 local teams compete in the fifth annual Bridge Bust on Saturday, Jan. 7, in Plano. Watch as weight is slowly added to each balsa wood bridge to see how much it can hold before it busts. Teams of 4-H members and community residents from DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties have been designing and building their bridges since late November. Each bridge entry will be judged on aesthetics and structural efficiency in various categories, including school, family and youth. Spectators can participate in handson 4-H STEM activities, watch 4-H STEM demonstrations, see award-winning 4-H projects, hear from an industry professional, and witness the structural efficiency testing to see which bridge design comes out on top. In addition, a new team choice was added this year to give younger students, ages 5 to 9, the opportunity to practice engineering and design skills without competition. These groups also will have the option to conference with judges and/or break their bridge in an exposition category. This annual Bridge Bust challenge

Founded in 1932, All-America Selections has a list of all current and past winners – vegetables and flowers – available on their website (all-americaselections.org) that have been “Tested Nationally and Proven Locally.” AAS winners are announced three times each year. “Just reading about these winners has begun to paint the garden possibilities for next year,” Black remarks. “A possible theme for 2017 could be a rainbow-colored garden, using some of these colorful new winners and some standard garden varieties.” For more information about gardening, check out the University of Illinois Extension websites Watch Your Garden Grow (extension.illinois.edu/veggies/index.cfm) and Beyond Impatiens & Petunias (extension.illinois.edu/beyond).

Q & A on cold weather, holiday plants, firewood foil and plastic pots.
DOWN THE GARDEN PATH
Q: How much firewood can I bring in the home ahead of burning it in the wood burner/fireplace? A: Limit the amount of firewood to what you will

be burning in the next seven days. It is not the space it takes up, as much as the time the firewood will be warm. Any hitchhiking insects will typically take longer than that to become mobile again, leaving the firewood. The insects belong outdoors and won’t really cause a problem besides the “creepy crawly” effect. If the wood pile is a distance from the home, an unheated garage can be used to store the firewood until you are ready to bring it into a heated space.
Welcome to another year of gardening! You would think January would be a time for gardeners and homeowners to sit back a bit, yet questions keep rolling in to Master Gardeners and Extension Educators. Let’s check out a few of them:
Q: With bitter cold weather, is there anything I should be doing or watching for outside in the garden beds? A: Along with the late December cold came
several inches of snow. Snow is a great insulator of temperature changes. Tender perennials covered in snow are quite safe for the winter. Snow drifts in the beds are a good thing, providing both winter weather protection and adding needed soil moisture next spring. As a bonus, snow protects the plants from the foraging rabbits. However, watch for snow drifts around your fruit trees. If they get higher than the trunk protection, rabbits will climb up and feed on unprotected bark and eat young branches. Knock down the drift so the trunk protection can do its job.
Q: I love enjoying all the holiday gift plants, but now what? I do not have the space or windows to keep them all alive. A: Some of our gift plants are intended to be

We should not feel bad about that. Some others like the amaryllis bulb, and Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti, are ones that can provide years of enjoyment. When the arrangements or potted holiday plants are ready to be added to the compost pile, be sure to remove the floral wire and other bits. a big difference. A source of combustion air near the fireplace means you won’t have that feeling of a draft, as you would if you opened the front door or patio door to let in some air.

$1M grant to help local Habitat chapter Funding expected to aid over 50 families SHAW MEDIA Building on their successful partnership, the Illinois Housing Development Authority’s Board of Directors awarded $1 million in funding to Habitat for Humanity of Illinois to support the organization’s Building Impact initiative. This allocation represents the largest single grant awarded to HFH Illinois for a one-year period and the third time IHDA has provided funding for the program over the past two years. Established in 2014, the Building Impact program provides low-income Illinois residents with housing assistance in amounts ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 per family. Eligible families must earn at or below 80 percent of the area median income (AMI), with a preference to families at or below 50 percent AMI. HFH Illinois will utilize the additional funding from IHDA to offset construction costs or buy down mortgages to help underwater homeowners. HFH Illinois anticipates this grant will help over 50 struggling families who can apply online. “Habitat for Humanity of Illinois and IHDA share a common mission and vision that entails preserving and building affordable homes and communities throughout the state,” said Mark Miklosz, Habitat for Humanity of Illinois, board vice president. “When we joined forces in 2014, we were able to make important headway in helping alleviate the pressures on many hardworking Illinois families by providing down payment assistance to aspiring homeowners in purchasing quality housing for their families. “Since 2014, 31 low-income and 14 very-low-income families have benefitted from this program alone, translating to $700,000 in no-interest loans that stand to transform their lives and communities for the better,” Miklosz added. “IHDA is proud to support Habitat for Humanity Illinois and expand the Building Impact program,” said IHDA Executive Director Audra Hamernik. “Habitat for Humanity Illinois has done a great job administering the program and helping Illinoisans build equity through homeownership.”
One family’s experience
The funding provided to Habitat by IHDA has a real and meaningful impact on the lives of Illinois residents throughout the state. Ana Beltran, 41, a resident of Aurora, is the proud owner of a new home she built with assistance from Habitat for Humanity of Illinois.

Ana Beltran of Aurora (second from left) accepted keys to her Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity home at 1229 Pleasant Place in Aurora during a dedication ceremony Saturday, Dec. 3. With her are (from left) Fabio Jimenez, Beltran’s son; Carmen Pena, Beltran’s aunt; and Debbi Albright, Habitat operations director. The Beltran home, a renovation, is Habitat’s 55th Aurora-area project since the Christian volunteer group’s founding in 1989. Ana writes, “In the Dominican Republic is where I grew up with my family, of five brothers and sister including me, and friends until the age of 23. In 1997 at the age of 23, I left all the ones I love including my three-year-old son, to come to the USA. This life-changing event gave me joy in what the future could bring but also left me heartbroken. Because of the struggle of being away from my loved ones, I sought refuge in God’s arms and everlasting love, whom gave me peace in my times of suffering through His promises. “Soon enough, though it felt like an eternity, I began to see the promises. After six years I was able to obtain a U.S. citizenship and finally have one of my heart’s long desire of going back to my home country and bringing my son back to the U.S. Not only was I happy that I was reunited with him, but that he could also then have an opportunity to attend college and have a better future, which gave me a mind at peace. “As I supported my son in furthering his dream of graduating high school and attending college, I realized that I had an unaccomplished dream that had always been in my heart. The dream of one day having a home in the United States of America. As time passed, this dream became an even more distant impossible idea and started to lose hope until one day when the Lord opened up a door. “One day as I did my grocery shopping, I came upon a friend Margarita Corona, who I was neighbors with for 20 years. As we talked and caught up, she introduced me to a program and explained that it could help me obtain a house. As she kept explaining, I could
not help but think of how this was an opportunity God was laying before me. After receiving encouragement from God and Margarita, I filled an application for Habitat for Humanity and within three months I was approved. Upon reading the letter of approval I could not help but jump for joy and once more be filled with hope. With the help of Habitat for Humanity and its great, loving and caring staff, my dream was now becoming a reality. “I know that the Lord has put this medium in my path to reach what I once thought was impossible. I have been a renter for 15 years of a small one-bedroom studio and I no longer want to be one. With the help of the Lord and Habitat for Humanity, after completing my home and 350 sweat equity hours, I will be the owner of my own home in Aurora. “Habitat for Humanity has changed my life and has given me a sense of triumph and victory over what I dreamed to be impossible. It has given me the sense that I too can own my property and have a share in the American dream. Not only has it impacted my life, but that of my son as well. Now he will be able to have more room to do the things he likes, such as playing his instrument and working on his engineering projects. “Working alongside the other volunteers and staff has been a great journey and experience. Through laughter and shared testimonies we encourage each other to patiently await as our dreams are fulfilled. Knowing that Habitat for Humanity is a ray of hope not only for me but for others, like Bob, a staff whom has seen the hand of God
through Habitat so many times, makes me glad to be part of it. “My desire after obtaining my home is to marry my fiancé, as the Lord in his word commands us to. If God sends me more children then I will receive them, but my primary focus is to see my 22-year-old son finish his last year at NIU to obtain his BS in Electrical Engineering and to also better myself. Better myself by obtaining my GED and then becoming a certified nurse and advance from working a custodial position at School District 308. Not only better myself in the secular but in the spiritual too and keep accomplishing the mission God has for me. As I faithfully follow him and attend my local church, Casa Del Alfarero, I serve my community and help those who are in need of love. By teaching the children at Sunday school, helping and serving my community through my church, I know that God is laying the proper foundations in my heart to keep loving Him. “To this day I thank the Lord for what He has done and where He has brought me out of and all glory be to Him. I also thank Habitat for Humanity, from the bottom of my heart, for the awesome and great love that they have for the community. I pray that God may bless the program and all the staff, so that they may keep flourishing helping all those in need.”
IHDA and Habitat for Humanity
By extending its relationship with Habitat for Humanity of Illinois, IHDA also fulfills its mission of financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing across Illinois – with an emphasis on areas identified as high need in Central and South Central Illinois.
