Joshua Schneider of Plano and his family took a once-in-a-lifetime trip Feb. 19-24 to California with the Make-a-Wish program. Joshua, who has muscular dystrophy, wanted to see where Monarch butterflies migrate for the winter.

oshua Schneider of Plano watched two Monarch butterflies frolic in the air, but when the two fell into water, Joshua was given one of the butterflies and taught to gently blow on its wings until they dried enough for it to fly out of his hands and into a eucalyptus tree. “That was my favorite part,” 11-year-old Joshua said. The Schneider family took a once-in-a-lifetime trip Feb. 19-24 to California with the Make-a-Wish

program. Joshua was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when he was 7 years old after his parents Chuck and Stephanie noticed he wasn’t hitting benchmarks like other children around him. After assessments at Lurie Children’s Hospital, he was diagnosed. “He’s getting slowly weaker. He now has a mobility scooter which helps him get around better. It will be a lifelong process of mobility for Joshua. Now he can get out of the scooter and can walk a little here and there. As a child he was reluctant to get the scooter because he doesn’t want to look

different,” Chuck said. After one of Chuck’s coworkers mentioned the Make-a-Wish program, he began the application process where he had to talk about his son’s ailment, the organization spoke with the family doctor and the recipient had to be of terminal or serious medical status. According to Illinois.wish. org, the goal of the organization is to grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich human experience with hope, strength and joy.

A volunteer at the Monarch Butterfly Grove brought in a Monarch from a butterfly waystation for Joshua Schneider to release. “That was cool because you don’t have a butterfly sit on your hand every day or get to see one up close. Usually you get three feet from one and it flies away,” Joshua said.

Children’s hearing studied at YMCA in Plano NIU professor conducts checks to gather data SHAW MEDIA When Dr. King Chung, a professor of audiology at Northern Illinois University, and her team approached Dana Lowe, the Early Learning Academy director, about participating in their study “Hearing Status of Students in the United States,” Lowe knew it was a “win-win” for both NIU and the YMCA. Dr. Chung and two of her three-year College of Audiology students, Kaitlin Anderson and Kara Combs, visited and gathered data at the Fox Valley Family YMCA’s Early Learning Academy last week and will continue again this week. Her goal is to gather hearing data from children ages 3 to 18 years old in the United States and compare it to data she has gathered from around the world while doing humanitarian work. “Heart of Hearing,” Chung’s humanitarian research and services program, provides an in-depth hearing screening for underprivileged populations such as Aborigines in Australia and children

According to Lowe, “In the state of Illinois, children age 3 to 5 years old are required to have hearing screenings, and children entering kindergarten must have a full hearing test administered by an audiologist. Aiding Chung in her study provides our students with an in-depth hearing test, which fulfills Illinois’ requirement. Chung’s research is basically providing a free hearing test which parents would have had to pay for in the past.” The screening, administered by the

two audiology students, tests to see if the eardrum and bones in the middle ear are moving normally. An audiometer tests the subject’s hearing by sending different frequencies to the ear and monitoring the subject’s lowest response level or hearing threshold. They also use an otoscope to inspect the ear canal and an ERO Scan Pro to test sound reflections in the inner ear. If a child fails the test, the team will refer parents to an ENT or a general physician.

“The kids were very fascinated by the team’s equipment and tools,” Lowe said. “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in Chung’s study while fulfilling the state’s hearing test requirements.” For more information regarding Chung’s study, visit chhs.niu.edu/ about/staff/chung.shtml. Restaurant reviews

Beer, burgers, bacon abound at Tap House Grill It’s hard to believe it’s been this long, but Tap House Grill has been serving a variety of tasty food and thirst-quenching brews in downtown Oswego for almost nine years now. The restaurant – which operates a total of eight locations in the Chicago suburbs – opened up in the summer of 2008 after the closure of Emmett’s Ale House at 123 Washington St., at the corner of Washington and Harrison just east of the Fox River. The Mystery Diner has been to the Tap House Grill on a few occasions, so he was familiar with its menu and had his favorites: the deep fried cheese curds from Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery, the Tipsy Stout burger with its smear of Merkt’s cheese spread and crispy onion strings, for example. But on this latest trip, the Mystery Diner saw the Tap House had several new entries on its menu, and, as a person who enjoys a challenge, he decided to try a few new things and was not disappointed in the least. However, the Mystery Diner started with an old favorite: a cup of the Tap House Grill’s beer cheese soup, which features creamy Wisconsin aged mild cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses blended together with a local pale ale. It’s topped with a crusty crouton, which is a nice touch. For an appetizer, the Mystery Diner ordered a tempting new menu item: cheddar-stuffed bacon. The geniuses in the kitchen take cheddar cheese, wrap it in applewood smoked bacon, beer batter it and then deep fry it. It is, frankly, a taste explosion that is so good it should be illegal in several states. But the Mystery Diner wasn’t finished yet. He decided to order a sandwich to finish his meal, and again, tried a new menu item: a bratwurst Reuben sandwich. A beerpoached, griddle-seared bratwurst is topped with

“Illinois Make-a-Wish came out to talk to the family and specifically ask Joshua what he wanted to do. They said they had never had a child ask for this wish. It wasn’t the typical trip to Disney or a cruise, he wanted to see where the Monarch butterflies migrate to in the winter,” Chuck said. Joshua’s love of the Monarch butterfly began in his mother’s garden in front of their home. Joshua takes care of the butterflies and plants each summer, and his fifth-grade class studied a unit on the Monarch butterfly and researched their migration patterns. Most Monarch butterflies end up in Mexico on the side of a mountain, but due to the uneven terrain, the family looked into other viable options. Toward the end of the winter season, some Monarch butterflies make their way back north and end up at the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach, California, so that’s where the Schneiders headed. Chuck said Make-a-Wish took care of everything from the limousine to and from the airport to setting up all of the hotel, meal and entertainment accommodations. Joshua said he likes to watch “Wheel of Fortune,” so he personally got online and ordered tickets for his

They toured the California Science Center and Joshua was able to see the space shuttle Endeavour on display. CLUB FILE

Watch for motorcycles when out on the road SHAW MEDIA The month of May has been designated as “Motorcycle Awareness Month” through proclamations issued by many local and county governments, as well as past and current governors of Illinois. The goal is to raise awareness levels in all motorists that motorcyclists are returning to the roads and highways in greater numbers. During Motorcycle Awareness Month, ABATE members will be distributing motorcycle safety posters and public service announcements throughout Illinois. Members of ABATE are encouraged to participate, each May, in the annual “Freedom Rally” in Springfield. “Riders come from all corners of the state to celebrate freedom of choice, and to show our appreciation of those representatives who support our positions, and remind those who oppose us that we’re still here,” said a

news release from the group. A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) of Illinois supports the education of all motorcyclists and the general motoring public as the most effective method for reducing motorcycle accidents, injuries and fatalities. ABATE of IL encourages all motorcyclists to complete both of the motorcycle safety courses, which were developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and are sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation. ABATE of IL discourages the use of alcohol or drugs while operating, or riding as a passenger on, a motorcycle. ABATE of IL is in agreement with the United States Department of Transportation that motorcycle safety courses have been the single most important factor in significantly reducing motorcycle injuries and fatalities. For more information about ABATE, call Open Roads Chapter President Cliff Oleson at 630-552-3828.

Indian Valley Community Band is an all-volunteer, multi-generational band founded in 1986 by three Sandwich band directors – Paul Rossok, Terry Wickwire and Joel Hawkinson – and has been entertaining audiences around the Fox Valley area ever

since. It includes the musical talents of more than 30 band members from a dozen area communities. Rehearsals are from 6 to 7:20 p.m. Mondays at the Sandwich Middle School. There are no auditions, and anyone high school age or older who has played an instrument is welcome to sit in and play along. Under the direction of Richard Hart, IVCB will perform a variety of music suitable for all ages. Hart was the choral director at Downers Grove North high school for 29 years. After retiring, he opened Hart’s Music Store in Sandwich and he is well-acquainted with the community band, as he played trombone with the group for many years. Concert-goers are invited to stay for a punch and cookie reception and meet the musicians after the concert.

Church plans rummage, bake sale for Friday, Saturday SHAW MEDIA Shoppers will find many bargains at the Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ’s fall rummage and bake sale set for 9 a.m to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, and 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, April 29, at the church at 409 Center Parkway. An abundant selection of household

goods, toys, books, clothing, furniture, tools and holiday dĂŠcor items will be available. On Saturday, Bag Day, bargain hunters can fill a brown paper grocery bag for only $3. Remaining larger items which do not fit in a grocery bag can be purchased at half price on Saturday morning This semiannual event is a long-

time tradition at the church. Ladies in the church’s circles began hosting rummage sales over 40 years ago in the building now housing Chapel on the Green. Proceeds from the sales have helped to support the church, its facility, ministries and programs. Community-based organizations including the Kendall County Food Pantry, PADS, AID, Mutual Ground, Open

Door, Wayside Cross, Feed My Starving Children, and Cornerstone Young Women’s Learning Center have benefited from donations made possible by rummage sale proceeds. The church is located at 409 Center Parkway, west of Route 47 and north of Route 34 in Yorkville. For further information, call the church at 630-5537308.

Creating P a Better World

hilosophers and theologians have often argued that creation is ongoing, that it was not over and done with on the seventh day when God rested, but that the creation continues to unfold with every passing day. For a being who is eternal, who existed from the beginning, as it were, and foresees the end—if there even is an ultimate beginning and end, which is a very human way of looking at things—all of creation may be a single event. But from our earthly perspective, where time is relevant, we are clearly in the midst of an ongoing creation and development of the world. We contribute to this development in our own small way. Humans can divert rivers and build dams, or raise mountains and ďŹ ll valleys by moving earth from one place to another. As in everything, we can take part in the ongoing creation for better or worse. We can indeed improve our world or make it worse. Ask yourself whose side you are on in the ongoing creation of the world. Are your actions making things better or worse? God needs good workers to help build up creation, so commit each day to making things better. Whether it’s something really big, or something more modest, it’s always good to be on the side of God and the angels. – Christopher Simon

Spring arrives at farm SHAW MEDIA Spring at the Farm is the Dickson-Murst Farm’s best event for young families. It is a free day of things to see and do for young children. Enjoy the farm-themed play yard with a “corn box” instead of a sand box and a play “barn” instead of a house. Antique tractors will be pulling “hayrides” through the neighborhood and mid-century farm equipment is always on display at the farm events. Activities begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7. The farm is at 2550 Dickson Road in Montgomery, just north of Bristol. Spring in the country means baby animals. Members of the Newark FFA will bring their project animals – horses, chickens, cows, pigs, sheep and goats to meet and to pet. Ask these amazing young people about their animals and learn about the process of caring for these animals. The FFA will also have flowers

and vegetable plants for sale from their greenhouse. 4-Hers of Kendall County will be in the corn crib with a fun project to make butter. Spring at the Farm is a free event, focused on farm kids and agriculture in our lives. Come hungry because there is always good, affordable food available at the Partner’s Country Kitchen. The Conservation Foundation, owner of the site and co-host of the event, notes that the event will be held rain or shine. Activities sponsored by the Dickson-Murst Partners are used to generate funds to preserve the buildings at the farm and to aid in educating the public about the importance of the history of agriculture in our area. Dickson-Murst Farm is on Dickson Road on the west side of Montgomery, one mile east of Route 47, two miles west of Orchard Road, between Route 30 and Galena Road. For information about events or directions, call 630-272-0686, or visit theconservationfoundation.org and click on Dickson-Murst Partners.

April Showers Bring Bugs Inside

How do I know when 4-H’s International Night to plant those veggies? takes place on this Friday That perennial question of “How soon can I plant my garden?” likely has been around since the first garden was planted. Part of the answer stems from knowing what kind of vegetables you are going to sow from seed or put in the garden as transplants. There are things you may need to know before you can answer that question for your own garden. Cool-season vegetables are those that can survive or prefer cool to cold air and soil temperatures. Within this group, we can break them down further. First are those vegetables that can withstand freezing temperatures or hard frosts without damage. The second set are those vegetables that can make it through light frosts but not freezes or even a heavy frost. The former set should be the first ones planted. We have two more groups to go during the spring and early summer planting season. Tender vegetables cannot survive any kind of cold, even a light frost. The last group are warm-loving vegetables that absolutely require warm air and soil temperatures. When we plant each of these groups is directly related to the hardiness zone map. For our area, that is zone 5b on the newest USDA map. The planting schedule follows what we call the “Average Frost-Free Date” (AFFD), which can vary in any year by as much as two weeks! The typical guidelines suggest those very hardy seeds and transplants can get in the ground four to six weeks ahead of that AFFD. Frost-tolerant seeds and plants can be planted about two to three weeks ahead of the AFFD, but tender seeds and plants can get planted on the AFFD. The warm-loving vegetables and seed wait until one to two weeks after that AFFD. For our area, the suggested AFFDs are April 15 to 25. It is not too late for those very hardy vegetables or seeds, and we are right on time for the frost-tolerant ones. Mark the calendar and plan to plant those tender and warming-loving vegetables in the weeks ahead. As those very early plantings are harvested, there is the room for successive plantings that will carry harvest along. Those cold-hardy vegetable transplants have been available at garden centers for a while now, and later you’ll begin seeing the warming-loving transplants for sale. Garden centers may even suggest waiting a bit longer before planting frost-sensitive

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH Richard Hentschel and warm-loving vegetables. By following the schedule and combining those four groups of vegetables with some successive plantings, gardeners can plant and have vegetables for the dinner table from spring through late fall. With a little effort in the fall, some late-season vegetables can remain in the ground and harvested fresh through late fall into early winter. Having fresh vegetables out of your own garden with the Thanksgiving meal is something to brag about at the office.

Experience more than a dozen diverse countries with just one visit to Smith 4-H Hall on the Kendall County Fairgrounds on April 28. From 7 to 8:30 p.m., visitors can journey with 14 Kendall County 4-H Clubs to fill a “passport” by learning about the countries and cultures of Brazil, China, Fiji, Germany, Haiti, Honduras, Madagascar, Morocco, Norway, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Uganda, and the USA, featuring Alaska. During the 11th annual International Night, visitors can discover the cultures, explore the geography and taste native foods of these amazing countries. 4-H’ers from clubs around the county will share facts, flags and food of several different countries. As the youth share their 4-H Passport to the World group projects, they will ask “travelers” a question about the study country, and a correct answer will earn the visitors a punch on their passport. Completed excursions “around the world” earn the passport holder

Lilium's Story...They say that I was born around Christmas down in Tennessee. I don't know why they did not want me but I was packed off to the shelter. Well, I hitched a ride up to 4 Paws shelter to have them help me look for a loving family. I am very sweet and play nicely with the other shelter dogs. Are you looking for a best friend to join your family? If so, please contact 4Paws 4U 4Ever and arrangements can be made to meet. Thank you for looking at my photo but let's meet in person, please.

4Paws 4U 4Ever will be hosting adoption events Saturday at DOWNERS GROVE Petsmart Sunday at SOUTH ELGIN Petsmart.

I will be waiting anxiously to find my new 4Ever family!, I will have some of my puppy and adult dog friends from the shelter available for adoption too! Visit www.puppiesthatneedlove.com to see all of the puppies and dogs that are available. Millbrook Junior High School students learn about the Earth’s water supply by demonstrating the water cycle and water use during the annual Environmental Science in Action event at Hoover Forest Preserve on April 20.

Millbrook students explore environment SHAW MEDIA To celebrate Earth Day, Millbrook Junior High School students joined Kendall County educators for the annual Environmental Science in Action event at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville. Youth learned with hands-on activities about trees and plants, soil health and water quality in Illinois from local experts with University of Illinois Extension and 4-H Youth Development, the Kendall County Forest Preserve District and the Kendall County Soil and Water Conservation District. “This annual Environmental Science in Action event provides Kendall County students with a unique opportunity to see, touch and learn about different pieces of our natural world,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Youth Development program coordinator in Kendall County. “Youth learn in many ways, and providing applied opportunities that bring an educational concept to life is sometimes exactly what they need to succeed.” Groups of youth participated in three sessions throughout the day. Jenny Wold of the Soil and Water Conservation District taught youth about water quality and they identified invertebrates in the stream and determined the water was good quality by the species living there. With the Kendall County Forest Preserve District’s April Morris, the groups explored the forestry ecosystem and discussed poison ivy, edible

plants and various trees. New to this year’s program was the Ag Innovator Experience with 4-H. Youth learned about soil health and how agriculture is reducing its carbon footprint with no-till farming, and, in groups, they made miniature no-till planters using a robotic “bug” and miscellaneous items. “The 2017 4-H Ag Innovators Experience, Healthy Soils CSI, challenges youth to understand the composition of soil and the impact tilling soil has on the entire soil ecosystem,” said Donna Nuger, 4-H Youth Development Educator. “In addition, they are exposed to robotics and engineering as they try to find a working solution.” The 4-H Ag Innovators Experience program is presented by National 4-H Council and Monsanto. 4-H Youth Development programs include 4-H clubs, learning enrichment, and other youth outreach activities. These positive youth development programs provide opportunities for youth to feel a sense of belonging, develop independence, practice generosity and experience mastery.
