Marifrances was born on New Year’s Eve 1919 in Bloomington Illinois, daughter of Frank X. Sr and Mary Ann Lee Glaser. She married her true love, Francis L. (Mike) Thompson. Surviving is her beloved daughter and close companion, Angela Havel of Oswego; sister, Dorothy Lockenvitz of Bloomington; granddaughters, Haliana and Clarissa; and great grandchildren, Annika, Grady and Bowen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. (Mike) Thompson; her parents; sister, Madeline Walsh; and brother, Frank X. Glaser, Jr. In her own words, “faith, family, and fun” were the centers of life for Marifrances, an indomitable spirit beloved by family and friends. Known also as Mari, Mar, Gran, and then “GG”, she shepherded and doted over four generations of family. Marifrances, the daughter of a conductor, eagerly explored the expanses of post-WWII America on the trains of GM&O Railways, returning home with her sisters and friends to help direct the loving cacophony of the “big house” on Grove Street – gathering family and heading early for good seats at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Sunday mass. Though her interests, energies, and enjoyment led her to work for many happy years as cashier in the Water Department for the City of Bloomington (until she retired at age 55) her passion was watching over her girls – exercising spirit and strong will through the development of her beloved granddaughters Haliana and Clarissa. Widowed in 1974, she moved to be with them in the Chicago area. In the winter of life’s seasons, Marifrances continued to loudly teach about the strength of spirit while also quietly witnessing for the strength of faith. She never gave up watching over her girls and reveled in the arrival of the next generation – hugging close her great-granddaughter Annika, followed by great-grandsons Grady and Bowen. We commit Marifrances Thompson’s soul to God, but hold her spirit, pride and love close to Earth as a part of our hearts and minds. Online condolences and memories of Marifrances may be left for the family at kiblerbradyruestman.com.

Hultgren announces App Challenge SHAW MEDIA U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, has announced that the annual Congressional App Challenge, previously known as the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, for high school students in the 14th Congressional District has launched and will be accepting submissions through Nov. 2. The competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields, allowing students to

compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Hultgren is co-chair of the STEM Education Caucus in the U.S. House and recently launched the STEM Scholars program to encourage high school students to become ambassadors for the possibilities provided by STEM education in their communities. Last year, the nationwide competition received submissions from students in 84 congressional districts. Jake Cirino of Oswego High

School was selected as 14th District winner by area judges from the computer science and technology fields for his app, “The Student Planner Project.” Winners will be selected by a panel of local judges and recognized by Congressman Hultgren. The apps will be featured on a display in the U.S. Capitol building. Additional information can be found at congressionalappchallenge. us, and on Hultgren’s website at hultgren.house.gov/serving-you/ stem-competition, or by phone at 202225-2976.

Fox Valley Crisis Line seeking volunteers SHAW MEDIA Do you have good communication skills and enjoy helping people? The Crisis Line of the Fox Valley is looking for candidates for an upcoming fall training session. Illinois’ most vulnerable populations have been negatively impacted by the cutting of programs and services. This has led to increased stress, anxiety and depression in our

community and has translated into greater need for Crisis Line support. The free, 10-week Crisis Line training begins on Thursday, Sept. 15. Classes will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Association for Individual Development’s Behavioral Health site, 1230 N. Highland Ave., in Aurora. This class prepares individuals to volunteer on the Crisis Line and focuses on issues pertinent to crisis calls, such as: crisis intervention, mental ill-

ness, suicide, domestic violence and sexual assault, alcohol or drug abuse, and community resources. To register or for questions, call Cheryl at 630-966-4304. The Association for Individual Development (AID) is a not-for-profit agency that empowers people with physical, developmental, intellectual and mental health challenges to enjoy lives of dignity and purpose. Visit The-Association.org for more information.

Teen REACH in Illinois

SHAW MEDIA Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed into law SB2407, which ensures that the Teen REACH after-school program will have a statutory home in state law. The bipartisan bill protects and provides clarity of intent and purpose for a program that is proven to boost graduation rates and significantly reduce crime. “I am delighted that the governor has embraced this vital investment in Illinois’ kids,” said Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis. “I’ve seen first-hand the effect Teen REACH after-school programs have had on public safety. Instead of being out on the street during the after-school hours, exposed to drugs and criminal activity, teens are learning life skills in a safe place.” Weis was one of 119 Illinois law enforcement leaders who signed a letter to Gov. Rauner in support of the bill. “Teen REACH is an asset to communities around the state,” said the letter, “and there is no doubt our law enforcement jobs would be even more difficult if not for after-school programs. If we don’t preserve and invest in these strategies, we’re pulling the

atively impact the ability to provide consistent, high quality after-school programs. Even with the new law, Teen REACH is subject to the appropriations process. The stopgap measure, agreed to by the Illinois General Assembly and Rauner on June 30, provides $13.1 million for Teen REACH for fiscal 2016 and the first six months of fiscal 2017. Law enforcement leaders in Illinois agree, however, that consistent, full-year funding is necessary to repair the damage done by the state’s budget impasse: during the crisis, Teen REACH providers were forced to curtail their programming or close entirely. At least one out of every eight youths recently helped by Teen REACH lost access to the program. SB2407 was championed by Sen. Toi Hutchinson and Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth and gathered a list of bipartisan sponsors before unanimous passage in both the House and Senate. “By now becoming law with Gov. Rauner’s signature, SB2407 is an important step in the right direction to preserve this key public safety program,” said a news release from the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office.

AND HELPING HANDS To truly prepare students to succeed in their chosen careers, education must be up-to-date, hands-on and real-world. That’s especially true in the high-stakes world of health care. Combined, our health care programs require more than 1,400 hours of observation or clinical time to graduate. Thanks to the many partnerships with hospitals, clinics and nursing homes within our region, Waubonsee’s health care students are able to get the hours, interactions and expertise they need to competently and compassionately care for the community.

Have fun at fair while volunteering for FVOAS Want to help?

SHAW MEDIA Fox Valley Older Adult Services is in need of more volunteers to staff the food building, Grannie’s Eatery, at the Sandwich Fair. Volunteers can have fun, meet some new friends, experience the fair from behind the scenes and help a worthwhile community agency. FVOAS is in need of hundreds of volunteers to staff Grannie’s Eatery, the craft booth and the parking lot, which all bring in revenue for the agency. Volunteers are the backbone of FVOAS’ more than four decades of success. The agency, which serves seniors in DeKalb, Kendall, LaSalle and Bureau counties, is challenging the community to support them. A pop challenge is also being conducted to procure the many cases of namebrand soda that are needed to stock the coolers at Grannie’s Eatery. In addition to this year’s fair needs, FVOAS is also looking for volunteers to help maintain the Fox Valley Community Center grounds, raise and low-

Many of the listed requests are talents that community members can share with appreciative seniors who attend the Active Adult Activities and Adult Day Service at the Community Center. All proceeds from the Sandwich Fair food building, craft booth and parking lot support area seniors. FVOAS depends on the continued volunteer hours and donations of individuals, businesses and or organizations to remain open, celebrating over 44 years of service to area seniors. SHAW MEDIA The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes one 4-H volunteer per county for exemplary service to the Illinois 4-H program as a Hall of Fame winner. This year, 74 new members were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame, the largest inductee class to date, including Kendall County’s Joan McEachern. 2016 marks the 12-year anniversary of the award, said Angie Barnard, director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation. The honorees were recognized at a ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Each year, hundreds of supporters watch the induction of new members into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame. “These longtime volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” Barnard said. “They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to

provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.” For 46 years, McEachern has been an active University of Illinois Extension volunteer in Kendall County and beyond, serving 4-H Youth Development and other programs. “Joan is a strong leader and communicator, and over the decades, she has put those skills to use to benefit the youth and families of Kendall Joan County,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H proMcEachern gram coordinator in Kendall County. “And she says that she plans to continue as long as she can.” While never a 4-H member herself, all three of her sons were 10-year members, and she has been volunteering for and supporting 4-H Youth Development

programs since 1970, said Eisnaugle. In 1977, she became the leader of Fox River Gardeners 4-H Club, and since has led and participated in various local, state and national program opportunities, especially throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She also served on many county and state committees in the 1990s and in more recent years, and she also currently serves as president of the Home and Community Education (HCE) group in Kendall County, and has for many years. The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Each inductee received a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion. Nominations for the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame are made by University of Illinois Extension staff. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion, at the State Fair.

their garden continues to “evolve due to trial and error – a lot of trials and many errors.” Several huge oaks and a cottonwood tree provide a vast shaded area in the backyard. These trees, affectionately named Gang of Five, Sarah, Isabella, and Jackson, are surrounded by beautiful perennials including lilies of the valley, pagoda dogwood, mock strawberries, and ligularia. A paved path leads from the outdoor grilling and eating areas to the fire pit and on to a lovely sitting area. All are great places to watch the beautiful sunsets and enjoy the environment they have created. P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) promotes continuing education and well-being for women. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with nearly 240,000 active members. Chapter FO was organized in Sandwich in 1941. Proceeds from the Garden Tour will be used to fund six educational projects for women.

Hasty Judgements

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. —Matthew 7:1-2 NIV

t is almost always a mistake to jump to conclusions about other people’s motives. We may think that someone is doing something for the worst of reasons, but we really do not and cannot know with certainty why people do the things they do. Scrutinizing our own motives and judging ourselves can often be valuable for our own spiritual progress, but judging others is almost always a mistake because we simply can’t know someone else’s motives. So why do we do it? Why are we so quick to judge other people? Perhaps part of the reason is simply that to get along with others it helps to be in tune with what others are thinking and feeling. We can’t be blind to the fact that other people have feelings and motives for doing what they do. But by judging others charitably, and assuming the best of them rather than the worst, we usually get along much better. In fact, sometimes the charitable judgement becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So if you are going to be hasty in making judgements about others, at least be hasty in making charitable judgements. All it takes is a bit of kindness, empathy, and perhaps a smile to get others to act with kindness, empathy and a smile of their own. – Christopher Simon

The old saying is “we can talk a lot about the weather, but can’t do much about it.” However, we can learn from our history of the weather and weather buffs always enjoy the opportunity to share local stories. So, join us for a special program on Sept. 17 to learn about and discuss local weather history. Dr. Jim Angel, Illinois’ state climatologist, will be the featured speaker at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, at the Little White School Museum, 72 Polk St., Oswego. He will discuss the climate history of the region, including historical trends of temperature and precipitation, droughts, floods, winter storms, and tornadoes. Local and regional events will be highlighted including the 1930s droughts, the 1996 record rainfall, the Groundhog Day Blizzard of 2011, El Niño, and other events. Also covered will be ways to track down historical climate information for the region from a number of sources. The program is sponsored by the Conservation Foundation, Oswegoland Heritage Association, and Oswegoland Park District. There is a $5 per person registration fee, payable at the door. How about all this rainfall? August usually means lots of hot dry weather. During the last week or so, we had at least one “rain event” that was pretty substantial. Some readers had several inches of rain, in fact. There are things we can do and see while we are waiting for things to dry out:

Lawns

Clean the air filter on the lawnmower. Sharpen the mower blade or blades for the fall mowing season. Dig out the fertilizer spreader and make sure it is working properly. Purchase your fall fertilizer or order your top-dressing material for your lawn for delivery later. Do a weed inventory and decide if a fall weed control will be needed.

Flower beds

See what needs to be deadheaded yet this year. Look for perennial plants that will need to be divided next spring. Head to your favorite garden center or retail nursery for end-ofthe-season specials you just have to have. Figure out where you are going to plant those perennials you just bought.

DOWN THE GARDEN PATH Richard Hentschel Composting

Check out the compost pile or bin – will you have to empty a bin or turn the compost pile before adding new materials this fall? Make a mental note not to add weed seed heads when cleaning up this fall. If you have a chipper shredder, you should change the oil, clean the air cleaner, add fresh gas and run the engine long enough to get it hot.

Houseplants that have been outside for the summer

Look them over for condition, ones to save and take indoors, others that are compost-worthy. Compost-worthy are those that are too old, too big, covered in scale insects or have mites, for example. For ones you are saving, you will need to treat for insects while they are still outside and before cold weather shows up. Mark the calendar to be sure they are inside by mid-September so they

BRIEF Free ‘Ag in the Classroom’ grant workshop for teachers

Are you a teacher looking for new books, resource materials and ideas to enhance your curriculum? Plan on attending the next Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher Workshop set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Kendall County Soil and Water Conservation District Office in Yorkville. Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom will be presenting and will be helping teachers apply for their grants and will also be providing resources and classroom ideas to get you set for the new school year. Contact Jenny Wold at kcagintheclass@gmail.com by Sept. 8 to RSVP. The workshop is free to attend and provides two professional development hours.

are acclimated for the winter months. Every yard is different and some of those late summer and early fall garden tasks can take more time than others. Start earlier on the long-term chores so you are done with them in a timely manner. Hurrying to get the houseplants in just after dark and before that predicted frost is never fun. Once we dry out, get back to working in the vegetable and flower beds and mowing the lawn. There will always be plenty to do right up to the weekend when the weather finally stops us. Taking the time now to put together that “to do” list. It goes a long way toward getting the yard put to bed for the winter.
