When school was all in 1 room Tiny schools thrived here until districts consolidated in mid-20th century By ROGER MATILE news@kendallcountynow.com Drive around Kendall County, and keep watch at country road intersections. If you look sharp you are very likely to happen upon a relic of county education history. One-room schools once dotted the county, providing rural youngsters’ education in first through eighth grades. Dozens of these one-room buildings were constructed over the years to serve youngsters living generally within two miles of the school. Consolidation of the county’s one-room schools began early in the 20th century and was completed by the late 1950s. After individual one-room school districts – there were some 90 of them over the years – had consolidated with one of the county’s town school districts, the buildings were sold at auction. Some were moved and turned into farm out-buildings and private residences, while others remained on their one-acre sites at country intersections where they were converted into family homes. Those are the ones that remind knowledgeable travelers of an era of public education that’s gone, and rapidly being forgotten. The era of the one-room school in Kendall County started well before the era of tax-supported public schools. Pioneers, mainly those who arrived from northeastern states, considered educating their children to assure they’d become good citizens and responsible voters an absolute necessity. Since there was no public tax mechanism then in place, schools were established by subscription. Sometimes residents, and sometimes itinerant teachers, approached parents and gathered subscriptions to establish a grade school. Teachers received slim pay, and generally “boarded around,” receiving a bed and meals from subscribing parents until the school term was over. Early county historians counted nearly 125 such subscription schools in the era before the Illinois General Assembly approved public financing. By the mid-1850s, school districts supported by property taxes were authorized to be established in the state’s townships. Each rural school district was governed by a three-member board of school direc-

Not until the late 1800s was the office of county superintendent of schools established to supervise rural schools’ curriculum and staff. In rural schools, a single teacher was responsible for teaching up to 40 students in eight grades, along with cleaning the building, making sure there was a fire in the stove on cold mornings, and maintain-
ing discipline among a student body ranging from 6 to sometimes 20 years of age. Among the many challenges teachers in those early years often faced was a lack of formal education. Most teachers during the late 1800s and early 1900s were high school graduates. Not until after the first quarter of the 20th century did some rural schools begin requiring at least some college. In the 1950s, the Illinois Superin-
tendent of Instruction, through a variety of programs, strongly encouraged teachers without four-year degrees to go back and earn their diplomas, and a bachelor’s degree gradually became the minimum requirement for new teachers. Until the 1940s, the great majority of rural students never attended high school,

much less college. Finishing eight grades and attending the county graduation ceremony was considered a fair achievement by most rural parents of the era. With labor required on farms, going on to high school or college was not an option for most rural students in any case. And too much education was viewed with some suspicion until the early 20th century. The Kendall County Record’s Oswego correspondent reported in April 1873 that voters in Oswego Township had declined to establish a high school. “The proposition to establish a high school was rejected; only 7 out of 181 voted in favor if it. The free school system is a good thing, but good things carried to excess become hurtful… Under the system of communism where the earnings of both the lawyer and the hod carrier go into a common fund, the free high school principle would be entirely proper.” But as years passed, high schools were eventually established as continuing education beyond eighth grade was increasingly valued, although graduating classes were extremely small for several decades. That meant that the education students received in one-room schools was all the more important. In 1893, school directors in Oswego announced a new, updated curriculum designed to benefit the majority of students who did not plan to attend high school, as well as the minority who did: “The new course of study was adopted by the board of directors Sept. 4, 1893. It provides for 12 years of instruction, three of which is high school work,” the Record’s Oswego correspondent reported. “A large
percentage of scholars attending never go further than the intermediate [junior high] grade. The imperative need then, is seen for a thorough elementary course. If a scholar never enters the grammar grade he may still be able to figure rapidly and accurately, read and write easily, and know something about his language and his country.” But times changed, and by the late 1940s, most students were at least going to high school even if they didn’t graduate. And parents began to notice that the larger town schools offered more opportunities, both socially and educationally, for their children. And that, along with encouragement from state educational officials, led to the acceleration of consolidation of rural one-room schools into larger schools in town. The process began by moving students in seventh and eighth grades into town schools from the one-room buildings, and then continued with consolidating entire school buildings as noted at the beginning of this article. As they closed, the buildings, school sites, and equipment were sold at auction until gradually all the former one-room districts had been consolidated. For instance, on Nov. 23, 1949, the Record’s NaAuSay Township correspondent commented that: “Four rural NaAuSay Township school houses were sold at public auction in November. Prices ranged from $135 to $2,710 for the Brown School with lot. The bell in one school brought 25 cents. This sale marks the passing of one of the greatest institutions of our country.” In the Oswego School District, the last one-room building, Church School at Heggs Road and 119th Street in Wheatland Township, was closed at the end of the 1957-58 school year. It was the end of an educational era that stretched

WCC sets session on bullying SHAW MEDIA Waubonsee Community College’s Workforce Development is offering an innovative approach to training that gives employers a “sneak peek” into new ways to solve common business issues. These sessions can be customized for the employer’s workplace. The first topic offered is “Harassment and Bullying Prevention,” and takes place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Waubonsee’s Aurora Downtown Campus, 18 S. River St. The session costs $40 and includes a continental breakfast. The training session will be offered in a unique simulation format.

“A lot of lawsuits are being brought in this area. The canned training approach is proving to be not as effective. This approach is something we think will be more impactful for businesses in terms of awareness and problem scope,” said Harriet Parker, Workforce Development account representative. Parker said the sessions are ideal for human resources representatives looking for new or different training offerings for their employers. Session content is designed for employees at all levels of responsibility. Those interested in attending the session can contact Parker at 630906-4143 or hparker@waubonsee.edu. Tickets are available at www.waubonseetickets.com. ployees. “The creation of a corrections emergency response team was one of the goals we had for the sheriff’s office,” said Sheriff Dwight A. Baird. “Having specially trained deputies on duty to respond rapidly to situations that require immediate attention will help maintain a safe environment for staff and prisoners. That goal was accomplished through the hard work and dedication of the men and women of this office.”

Knee Arthritis??? Read Below To Avoid Surgery DO YOU SUFFER FROM:
*Knee pain affecting daily activities? *Difficulty getting up from the floor? *Pain going up/down stairs? *Knee pain with jogging/running? *Knee pain getting up from a chair? *Popping/cracking sounds in your knee?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you could be suffering from knee arthritis. The CDC states that as of 2005, 26.9 million people suffer from knee osteoarthritis (OA) which typically begins after the age of 40 years old. OA in the knees can be very painful or just plain annoying at times.
Here’s the good news! There is a simple in office procedure that can help to reduce the pain and dysfunction caused by knee OA. This simple procedure is extremely effective and covered by most insurance companies. With knee OA, there is less cushion between your bones. Our simple procedure injects a solution which increases the cushion between your bones. It’s really that
simple. The treatment protocol takes about 1 month and involves some therapy, knee supports, and injections (5 in total). As a qualified physician, I have been providing these injections for over 17 years. I continue to see successful treatments over and over again. There have been over 280 million injections performed worldwide giving me confidence in its safety and effectiveness. Call my office to schedule an evaluation to see if you are a candidate for this simple procedure. One of our most recent success stories comes from Chery. She Says: “I came in with serious knee pain. I got a diagnosis on my first visit after an evaluation and x-rays. Within a very short time after starting treatment, I was feeling better. I am very pleased with my results!” Chery
You don’t have to suffer anymore. Call 630-553-2111 to schedule your evaluation today. We accept most major medical insurances as well as Medicare.

Meals on Wheels needs Oswego, Boulder Hill drivers SHAW MEDIA Meals on Wheels drivers are needed to help deliver lunch to senior citizens in Boulder Hill and Oswego neighborhoods. The Community Nutrition Network operating out of Senior Services Associates’ Beecher Center Yorkville office report that they are in desperate need of drivers to deliver meals to the frail elderly residents of Oswego and Boulder Hill. There is a need for help on all days of the week.
Home-delivered meal volunteer drivers agree to deliver a lunch time meal to isolated seniors on weekdays, Monday through Friday. Each driver completes a route of about six to 10 homes, and each route usually takes about an hour to complete. Drivers serve a vital service to their communities, for in addition to delivering food, they are a link to the outside world. The elderly recipient of the meal may only see one person in a day, their Meals on Wheels driver. Drivers offer human contact and a well-being

Dinner to benefit local shrine SHAW MEDIA St. Patrick Parish invites you to save the date for an evening to remember with the daughter of one of the Catholic Church’s modern-day saints. St. Gianna was canonized on May 16, and her daughter, Gianna Emanuela, will be in Yorkville on Oct. 29 for a fundraising dinner to help support the shrine built in her mother’s honor and to raise funds for the preservation of St. Gianna’s family home in Ponto Nuovo, Italy.  The St. Gianna Shrine, located at 406 Walnut St. in Yorkville, is a peaceful, outdoor destination for visitors
and is open to the public. The peaceful gardens, Rosary walk, water feature and restful benches combine to create an atmosphere for relaxation and prayerful contemplation. Still to come will be a footbridge that will connect the grounds of the shrine to the adjacent parking area at St. Patrick Church.  The shrine was built and is managed by volunteers at St. Patrick Parish, including the Knights of Columbus, and was the inspiration of Rev. Matthew Lamoureux, MIC, pastor of the parish. For more information about the shrine and the saint who inspired it, visit stgiannashrine.org.

hile it may be a clichÊ to say that everyone has their own opinion, the fact that dissension often arises from this diversity of opinion is worth noting, and worth doing something about. Being well-informed about social or political affairs may be a virtue in certain circles, but not if it makes us opinionated and difficult to be around. Even the best of friends and close families can sometimes be divided by strongly expressed opinions. It can be difficult to hear others expressing opinions which run counter to our own, especially in matters of faith and morals, and it requires a strong will in those circumstances to hold our tongue, but the person who is quick to counter the opinions of the opinionated comes across as opinionated himself. As the saying goes, it’s better to hold your tongue and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. So realize that we all have opinions, and when we are asked for ours it makes sense to give it, but otherwise opinions are usually best left unsaid. – Christopher Simon

There were 13 enthusiastic teams participating in Trivia Night trying to come up with correct answers in several categories including Movies, Flags of the World, Name That Tune, Presidents, States, Chicago, etc. It was an exciting evening for everyone with the games, concession hosted by Joe and Lynn Heriaud, raffles, and auction. DOWN THE GARDEN PATH Richard Hentschel we consider the tree over transplant shock. The same rule of thumb applies to evergreens too. As our fall weather triggers the storage of food reserves in the roots, now is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. Not wanting to leave out our needled and broadleaved evergreens here, they too are changing, just in ways that are harder to see. First, they will remain green throughout the winter, using up available soil moisture and moisture within the needles and leaves. You should not expect to see any major color change on needled evergreens besides the annual loss of some interior needles. Broadleaved shrubs may change color for the winter and some interior leaves may decline with a yellow color first, and later brown. Both needle and broadleaved evergreens will greatly

The good strong foliage color will be fading a bit as perennials also will be moving food reserves down into the root system just like the other plants in the landscape. benefit from a late season watering. Before you roll up the hose for the winter in November, water them once more. In the vegetable garden, our warm season crops like tomatoes and peppers will be impacted much more so than our cool season vegetables like those in the cabbage family. The ripening process with warm season vegetables will slow down, so tomatoes will still ripen, but just take a bit longer. Cabbage, broccoli, fall and winter radishes, and Swiss chard will really enjoy the cooler nighttime temperatures and not be bothered by the lower daytime temperatures. There is even time left to sow more of the leaf lettuces and harvest them as baby or micro greens. Perennial flower beds will be changing as well. Where those pollinated flower heads have been left, seeds are filing out to be eaten by birds. Examples are sunflowers and

Recent cooler weather and nighttime temperatures are beginning to trigger changes in our home landscape and vegetable gardens. First, you may have noticed a little bit of fall color beginning on some shade trees, mostly red maple cultivars and some on burning bush. It will be our cool nights and warm daytime temperatures that really kick in the strong colors as pigment content in the leaves starts to change from the greens to the reds, oranges and yellows. Sometimes early fall color could signal a problem with plants. It won’t be from being too dry this summer, that is for sure. Trees and shrubs that have been planted this season can show that early color because they have been transplanted and not because there is a problem. Those limited and not-yet-established roots systems are the typical cause of that color. Gardeners need to remember that it will take one year of recovery for every inch of tree trunk diameter before

Kendall County Animal Control PET OF THE WEEK Barbarella Barbarella is a very special girl so we had to give her a special name. She came to us as a stray so we know little about her. We do know she is tiny, just 34 pounds and she is estimated at 2 years of age. We do not know what happened to this girl, but she looks like she has had a very rough life. She was skinny, and missing fur has some scares and is even missing a toe. We will never understand how a dog can look like it's had such a horrible life and still be so sweet. We all really love this little gal, as she just has a way of tugging at your heartstrings. Come in and meet her she is guaranteed to make you happy and put a smile on your face. She is a lover, a bit of a clown and just an all around great girl. She is so good with other dogs so we use her when we temperament test our new dogs to see if they are dog friendly. So far she has not met a dog she did not like. In person she looks a bit like a pig, and that just adds to her charm. She can get a tad excited when she plays so we think a home with kids 12 and up would be best for her. She will need work on house training too, but with a little effort we know she is going to be someone's very faithful companion for years to come. Stop in at Kendall County Animal Control and meet her today. She is fully vetted and her adoption fee is 120.00. For more information about Barbarella or other adoptable pets, please visit
Kendall County Animal Control, 802 W. John Street, Yorkville, IL Phone: 630-553-9256, email: animals@co.kendall.il.us/animal-control/adoption/

Riders bring home awards from Springfield SHAW MEDIA Kendall and Kane County 4-H members earned ribbons and honors in the several divisions of the 2016 Illinois State Fair Junior Horse Show this summer. Five $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Illinois 4-H members who earned Superior Young Producer Award honors, including Kane County 4-H’ers Madde Klinkey and Bailey Ricketts, both of St. Charles. The SYPA horse contest had three separate areas of testing – a skillathon where members worked through visual and hands-on management stations, a written test on equine management, and a live-animal judging contest. The top three winners in each of those division received honors. The contest is administered by Debra Hagstrom, University of Illinois Extension equine specialist. Illinois 4-H Foundation, ADM, and the Illinois State Fair sponsor the Superior Young Producer Award program, which rewards 4-H and FFA members who excel in their knowledge of the livestock industry in five specific species: horse, beef, dairy, sheep, and swine. This year, the lifetime total dollars awarded topped the $500,000 mark for the 21-year history the Superior Young Producer program. During the Illinois State Fair Junior Horse Show, many local 4-H members also placed in the top three of various show divisions, including Hunter, Western and Gymkhana. Kendall County 4-H’s Kylie Marko claimed three first-place finishes in Gymkhana to garner her Grand Champion honors. In addition, Magdalen Turbak of St. Charles took home Reserve Champion in Pony Hunter with her horse “Imma Bonanza Impressor.” The following Illinois State Fair Junior Horse Show awards went to Kendall County 4-H and Kane County 4-H members, according to results posted by the Illinois State Fair (in alphabetical order):
