Ownership of a professional basketball team might not be everyone’s idea of a family business, but in the new Netflix comedy series “Running Point,” premiering Thursday, Feb. 27, the Gordon family’s line of succession names an unexpected new president of the Los Angeles Waves.
The 10-episode series stars Kate Hudson (“Glass Onion,” 2022) as Isla Gordon, a driven executive who is surprised but prepared when she is tapped to run the franchise after her brother (Justin Theroux, “White House Plumbers”) crashes out and is forced to resign from the position.
Isla is the only sister in the Gordon family C-suite and the Waves are the greatest team in the history of the game, so there is a lot of weight on her shoulders as she takes on the towering title. The pressure to carry it well comes from all angles, including from her brothers.
Scott MacArthur (“The Righteous Gemstones”) is Isla’s brother Ness, a single-season professional player who is now determined to redeem his reputation as the general manager of the Waves. Ness may have been forgettable on the team roster, but he’s motivated to make his mark in the Waves’ offices.
“The Other Two” star Drew Tarver is Sandy Gordon, the chief financial officer of the Waves, whose non-athleticism set him apart from the rest of his family growing up. Now, Sandy’s intelligence is an integral part of the team’s success — money well spent shows on the court. It’s a good feeling to know that your family has your back, even if, as in Isla’s case, they are painfully honest with you. But siblings also know exactly which button to press to make you lose your cool in record time. To help keep Isla’s executive game on track, she has her own team.
Lev Levy (Max Greenfield,
Caught the rebound A new team president steps up in ‘Running Point’
“The Neighborhood”) is Isla’s eternally supportive and positive fiancé, a pediatrician with a heart of gold. Brenda Song (“Dollface”) is Ali Lee, the Waves’ intimidating chief of staff and a longtime friend of Isla’s.
One of the first hurdles in Isla’s reign as president is mending the backbone of the Waves, Marcus Winfield (Toby Sandeman, “The Game”). Winfield has two championship rings, two Olympic gold medals and 12 allstar game invites to his name, but so many years on the top has the legendary athlete withdrawing from his team.
Also on the Los Angeles Waves team roster are Chet Hanks (“Your Honour”) as point guard Travis Bugg; Uche Agada (“Rise,” 2022) as rookie Dyson Gibbs; and Dane DiLiegro (“Imaginary,” 2024) as Eastern European Waves player Badrag Knauss. Jay Ellis (“Insecure”) is Waves coach Jay Brown, a former player who has brought home several championships. Jay’s quiet magnetism works for the team, but it may prove too strong for Isla to keep things strictly professional.
The cast also includes Fabrizio Guido (“Perry Mason”) as Jackie Moreno, a popcorn vendor at the Waves’ arena who receives a dream promotion; Keyla Monterroso Mejia (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as Jackie’s cousin Ana, an enterprising personal injury lawyer; and Roberto Sanchez (“Palm Royale”) as Stephen Ramirez, the stuffy head of the Waves board.
Sitcom virtuoso Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) executive produces “Running Point” alongside “The Mindy Project” collaborators Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen. With two of her latest comedies — Netflix’s “Never I Ever” and Max’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls” — having recently aired their series finales, Kaling talked to Netflix’s Tudum about the upcoming series.
“I really love writing shows about ambitious women,” the actor-writer-producer shared, “whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley or the president
of a basketball team. We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.”
Hudson, who has sparkled on the big screen in any genre, from the 2000 period rock star drama “Almost Famous,” to the 2003 rom-com classic “How to Lose a Guy In Ten Days,” to the 2012 political thriller “The Re-
luctant Fundamentalist,” has taken on creative ventures (including releasing her debut album, “Glorious,” in May 2024) lately that she may have been reluctant to try out previously in her career.
The actress told Variety last June as production on the first season of “Running Point” wrapped up, “This has been such a dream job. I hope it works. I hope we do four sea-
sons. You know, I’ve never felt that way before.”
Hudson’s filmography is filled with film projects with only a few notable steps into TV territory, such as her guest arc on the Fox musical dramedy “Glee” and the Apple TV+ crime drama “Truth Be Told,” but it sounds like “Running Point” came along at just the right time for her to jump back into episodic storytelling.
“I’ve been eager to dive into something comedic with a team I admire, and this role offers a fresh challenge and it was hilarious and engaging right from the start,” Hudson shared with Tudum. “The chance to work with people I respect and to bring a unique female perspective to a male-driven world was incredibly appealing.”
Don’t miss the premiere of “Running Point,” streaming Thursday, Feb. 27, on Netflix.

‘Duck Dynasty’ endures: Down but not out, “Duck Dynasty” has spent the past eight years off the air, but the A&E reality series that launched the Robertson family into stardom is coming back.
Set to debut this summer, “Duck Dynasty: The Revival” will consist of 20 episodes that will largely focus on the next generation of Robertsons — namely, Willie and Korie Robertson’s adult children, who were kids and teenagers during the show’s initial run from 2012 to 2017 and now have families (and in some cases, business ventures) of their own.
With cameras following life on the family homestead, “The Revival” should have a similar humorous tone as the original series, while also turning an eye on the future of Duck Commander, the Louisiana-based hunting game call brand founded by bearded patriarch Phil Robertson.
A&E’s announcement of the series revival made no mention of Phil, who drew controversy during the original series’ run. Given his health issues (including Alzheimer’s disease), he’s unlikely to appear in this new installment, but other family members,
such as Phil’s brother, Uncle Si, and Phil’s wife, Miss Kay, are set to return.
“The Robertsons earned a seat in homes across the country with their unique brand of downhome practicality, southern charm and relatable humor,” Elaine Frontain Bryant, executive vice president and head of programming for A&E and Lifetime, said in a statement.
“‘Duck Dynasty’ played a huge part of the success of A&E for many years, and we look forward to reuniting with the Robertsons on the revival.”
“Going back on A&E feels a little like going back home. We’re thankful for all who have followed along as our family has grown and expanded and can’t wait to get cameras rolling again on all our new adventures, or perhaps misadventures,” added Willie and Korie Robertson.
“Duck Dynasty: The Revival” will be produced by a different production company than the original series, with Wheelhouse Entertainment taking over from ITV-owned Gurney Productions.
“I was a huge fan of the original ‘Duck Dynasty’ and thought it was the best reality sitcom of all time, so I jumped at the chance to work with Willie and Korie,” stated Wheelhouse CEO Brent Montgomery. “The Robertsons live by a motto of ‘faith, family and fun’ and that will be the heartbeat of what we bring to viewers.”

‘Suits’ takes on the
By Dana Simpson TV Media
One of the top entertainment-based criticisms of our time is that no one is launching any brandnew creative properties. While this claim certainly hits home for many who have grown tired of reboots, remakes, sequels and the dreaded “requel,” it is hardly true that there’s no new content circulating. From Scott Derrickson’s (“Black Phone,” 2021) new Apple TV+ film “The Gorge” to Netflix’s hit Western “American Primeval” and Apple TV+’s up-and-coming drama titled “Your Friends & Neighbours,” which has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its April release, there is plenty to satiate those hungry for fresh stories and entertainment. As for returning, repurposed and reimagined content, however, there is clearly a healthy market for that, too.
One such television series making an interesting comeback is the USA Network-created legal drama “Suits,” which ran from 2011 to 2019. While it is not (yet?) returning in the traditional sense, NBC has announced “Suits LA,” a spinoff series of the original, which was set in New York City and filmed in Toronto. Starring an all-new cast (with the possibility of a few familiar cameos), “Suits LA” premieres Sunday, Feb. 23, on NBC. The series is also available to stream on Peacock the same day.
Starring Canadian actor Stephen Amell, best known to audiences for his work in “Arrow” and “Heels,” “Suits LA” follows Ted Black (Amell), a federal prosecutor who moves from the Big Apple to carve out a new life for himself by “representing the most powerful clients” in sunny Los Angeles. As his law firm struggles to stay afloat, Ted “must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career” (per NBC).
“Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives,” the official NBC logline reads. “All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind
Golden State
everything and everyone he loved.”
Among those working with Ted is Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt, “The Walking Dead”), a name partner at Black Lane Law and Ted’s close friend for several years. Stuart is described by Deadline as “energetic, powerful, focused and self-absorbed.” Named partner in the firm at the same time as Ted, the pair’s similar status and eagerness to win make them an unbeatable pair. But not unlike Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht, “The Good Shepherd,” 2006) and Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman, “Billions”) in the flagship series, when tempers flair, their strength and similarity cause the pair to butt heads.
Lex Scott Davis (“Florida Man”) and Alice Lee (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) also appear in the series as Black Lane’s rising star Erica Rollins and her associate attorney, Leah. As ScreenRant notes, Erica is great at her job, but “she is also someone who seeks to test her associates and gauge their loyalty, which will certainly be a source of conflict.”
Another L.A. firm employee of note — and one who will certainly be tested a few times himself — is Rick Dodson, Ted’s protege, played by Bryan Greenberg (“Emperor of Ocean Park”). While Rick does have Ted behind him, he is hardly untouchable. And with Erica using all she has to prove her worth at every turn, Rick would be wise to protect his own interests and keep up a professional wall. The final character listed among the series’ core cast is an FBI agent-turned-private detective currently known simply as
Screen Scramble
Kevin. Played by “The Goldbergs’” actor Troy Winbush, Kevin is a comparatively mysterious character who has a potentially tenuous past with Ted. In Ben Gibbons’ ScreenRant article titled “All 6 Suits LA Characters Revealed So Far (& Who Plays Them),” the author notes that “exploring [Kevin’s] background and his connection with Ted will prove to be an interesting element of the series that could tie Ted’s past with his present.”
NBC is clearly not withholding much when it comes to cast and character info, but what of the music? “Suits” became well known for its incredible soundtrack and megalomaniacal main character, but without Harvey’s LP-lined office walls and unmatched love of jazz, what will “Suits LA” sound like?
Thankfully, while we don’t have much to go on prior to the show’s release, fans of the original “Suits” do have the small consolation that the original series’ title theme, Ima Robot’s “Greenback Boogie,” will also be used in its L.A. counterpart’s opener. Although neither this — nor the few unofficial “Suits LA” playlists on Spotify — can be taken as intrinsic proof of a masterful use of good music in the spinoff, the fact that “Suits” creator Aaron Korsh (“Pearson”) returns as showrunner is a pretty solid indicator of quality.
Of course, the best way to determine whether the music — and indeed the show — are up to the proverbial snuff is to tune in.
“Suits LA” premieres Sunday, Feb. 23, on NBC and Peacock.

Supermarket superheroes shine, “from unlocking original ideas to elevating old favorites” (per History), during Season 6 of “The Food That Built America,” making its debut Sunday, Feb. 23, on the History Channel.
“Stuffed with the origin stories of inspiring food pioneers, visionaries and entrepreneurs who revolutionized America’s culinary landscape,” says the network, this food-loving series delves into the creation of the biggest and most lucrative food brands in American history, following as previously unknown visionaries work to evolve tastebuds and introduce global flavors to the masses.
Last season, “The Food That Built America” took viewers on a journey through the glo-
balization of the American palette, as some homegrown franchises exploded across the world (McDonald’s), while other foreign favorites found their footing in local grocery stores — such as SpaghettiOs, for example — growing in popularity until becoming a household staple.
This latest season follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, unveiling the inspiration behind classic American snacks — such as Raisinets, Goobers,
Milk Duds and Chips Ahoy cookies — while also taking time to highlight the introduction of new flavors and cuisines previously underappreciated by the American public. Namely, Mexican cuisine. You might not be able to last a weekend without them now, but without a few brave-stomached individuals, tortilla chips and salsa would never have gained the popularity they did, forming brands such as Doritos, Tostitos and Pace Salsa.

“Toxic Town”
One of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals comes to the screen in the four-part series “Toxic Town,” premiering Thursday, Feb. 27, on Netflix. Through the mid1900s, the British town of Corby, Northamptonshire, was home to an enormous steelmaking operation. But, when it was closed in the 1980s, it left behind a massive dump of toxic industrial waste. With poorly managed development projects and irresponsibly transported waste spreading the hazardous materials throughout the area, the denizens of Corby became the victims of widespread poisoning — from birth defects to illnesses. This series tells the stories of those at the heart of it all: a group of mothers in the town “who took on a David and Goliath battle for justice, the series traces through the years of their fight as a terrible truth comes to the surface” (per Netflix). Directed by Minkie Spiro (“3 Body Problem”) and written by Jack Thorne (“His Dark Materials”), the series stars Aimee Lou Wood (“Sex Education”), Jodie Whittaker (“Doctor Who”), Lauren Lyle (“Outlander”), Claudia Jessie (“Bridgerton”), Robert Carlyle (“The Full Monty,” 1997), Rory Kinnear (“Penny Dreadful”), Joe Dempsie (“Get Millie Black”), Brandon Coyle (“Downton Abbey”), Stephen McMillan (“Boiling Point”), Matthew Durkan (“Wedding Season”) and Michael Socha (“DI Ray”).

Created, written and co-showrun by Jenna Bans (“Desperate Housewives”) and Bill Krebs
(“Good Girls”), “Grosse Pointe Garden Society is directed by Maggie Kelly (“Dr. Death”). Now retired from life on the ice, this season, which introduces “Part 2” of Shoresy’s story, follows along as he navigates his life and career post-hockey — from serious relationships to new job opportunities. Meanwhile, the rest of the boys ride out the high of last season’s championship as they celebrate the summer in “SudVegas.” The series also stars Tasya Teles (“The 100”), Ryan McDonell (“Smallville”), Keilani Elizabeth Rose (“Flimsy”), Blair Lamora (“Paranormal Nightshift”), Terry Ryan (“A Fire in the Cold Season,” 2019), Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat (“Tribal”), Max Bouffard (“Letterkenny”), Jonathan-Ismaël Diaby (“Tout le monde en parle”), Keegan Long (“Letterkenny”), Camille Sullivan (“The Disappearance”), Kim Cloutier (“The Cobbler,” 2014), Maclean Fish (“Dark Harvest,” 2023), Brandon Nolan (“Legends & Lies”) and new talents Andrew Antsanen,
“Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke” The cracks in a picture-perfect social media facade crumble in the true crime docuseries “Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke,” making its Hulu premiere Thursday, Feb. 27. For years, Ruby Franke ran a successful family vlog channel on YouTube, with a dedicated 2.5 million subscribers following the seemingly happy family through their lives. Enter councelor Jodi Hildebrandt, to whom the family turned for guidance. When Hildebrandt and Franke’s relationship ran down a strange and dangerous course, Ruby’s children paid the price with their well-being. Arrested for child abuse in August 2023, the family’s story made international headlines as stories of harsh punishments and cruel, terrible treatment came to light. Now, Shari and Chad, the Frankes’ two eldest adult children, along with Ruby’s husband, Kevin, share their stories in-depth on camera for the first time. Along with these exclusive interviews, the series, directed by Olly Lambert (“Cutting Edge”), also features access to the Frankes’ friends and neighbors, along with “over a thousand hours of their YouTube channel’s unseen footage” (per Hulu).

Q: Help me out here, because I’m afraid I may be imagining things. Did Mr. T star in a show where he played a private detective? If it’s real, why can’t I find it anywhere?
A: Mr. T, the former celebrity bodyguard born Laurence Tureaud, is probably best known for co-starring in “Rocky III” (1982) and “The A-Team” (1983-1987 on NBC), two zeitgeist-capturing ‘80s classics. His “A-Team” follow-up wasn’t quite so successful, but I can tell you that it was, in fact, real.
“T and T” only lasted for three seasons, from 1988 to 1990. That plus the fact that it never had a stable TV home at the time means that it can be a little tough to find these days. But it’s possible if you know where to look.
It helps if you know a bit about its weird history. Despite starring Mr. T, a very American
star at the time, “T and T” was actually made in Canada by the Nelvana production company, which is better known for its kid-friendly cartoon output. The company has a YouTube channel called Retro Rerun where you can watch all three seasons of “T and T.” Canadians can also see the second and third seasons on GlobalTV.com — Global was the show’s original home north of the border.
The premise was as weird as you make it sound. Mr. T starred as a former boxer imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. He was freed by a crusading lawyer named Amy Taler (Alexandra Amini, “Three Men and a Baby,” 1987) — the other “T” in the title equation — so he started working with her as a private investigator.
Q: With “Vera” ending, will Joe come back for a spinoff?
A: The chances of a spinoff of the surprise-hit crime drama “Vera” are at least good, though not because producer ITV or star David Leon (“RocknRolla,” 2008) have said anything about one. Rather, the chances are
good just because of the sheer weight of demand.
When it was announced last year that “Vera,” which aired on the BritBox streaming service in North America, was coming to an end this year, fans immediately started clamoring for a spinoff.
And when (semi-spoiler alert) it ended the way it did in January, the calls became clearer: They wanted a continuation of the show with Joe Ashworth (Leon) in charge of the Nor-
“Naturally I missed my family. And my dog Jack, although he was with me in the northeast,” she told the Mirror newspaper. “But I didn’t see him much because I was working all day. I love my ‘Vera’ family, but I love my other family, too.”
Q: I love the show “Ghosts.” Where else can I see the actress who plays Sam?
thumberland & City Police team.
But Leon’s been mum on the idea so far, as has ITV.
Of course, given that the show just ended in early January, the producers have time before they need to make a decision.
It’s worth noting that it reportedly wasn’t ITV’s idea to get out of the “Vera” business. It was star Brenda Blethyn (“Pride & Prejudice,” 2005) who decided she wanted out after playing the title character for 14 seasons. She said filming the show where it’s set, in Northumberland, kept her too far away from her family in the south of England.
A: We’ve been fortunate to watch Rose McIver grow up on screen over the past decades. It started with seeing her as a child actor, playing an angel in the Oscar-winning film “The Piano” in 1993. As a teen, she had a role in another awardwinning tear-jerker, “The Lovely Bones” (2009), playing a girl investigating her sister’s (Saoirse Ronan, “Blitz,” 2024) murder while struggling to move on with her own life.
As a young adult, she starred in her own series, “iZombie,” playing a young medical resident struggling to control her transformation into a zombie while helping the police solve cases.
Meanwhile, she’s also been starring as Amber (later Queen
Amber — I guess that’s technically a spoiler) in Netflix’s “A Christmas Prince” rom-com film series.
But since 2021, it’s been all “Ghosts.” She plays Samantha, one half of a young couple who buys an old house with the intention of turning it into a bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, they soon discover that it’s haunted by a gaggle of wacky ghosts.
It’s based on a British show of the same name and has been a huge hit for CBS. It averaged well over five million viewers per episode in its fourth season this winter. There’s been no official word yet on a fifth, but it seems likely at this point.
