Mission Statement: Holy Cross Catholic School is a Christ-Centered Parish ministry dedicated to providing an extraordinary Catholic faith foundation with standards of academic excellence in a loving, hospitable environment. At Holy Cross Catholic School we are devoted to the Catholic faith through daily Mass, the Sacraments, prayer, and scripture study which help us grow together in faith and Jesus’ love. We believe that each of us is called to become the person God created us to be. Therefore, we guide our students to follow His will for our lives in a safe nurturing educational environment. Our school provides the framework for developing well-rounded, disciplined students who recognize their God-given talents, enabling them to make a positive difference in the world as they strive toward their everlasting home in Heaven. Households Each class at Holy Cross functions as a Household. Households are a way that a culture of family/prayer is promoted and nurtured within the school setting. Each Household has a unique name and song, which are used on Fridays when Households gather to pray and give thanksgiving. During this Lord’s Day Celebration, Sunday’s Gospel is read and the children begin to prayerfully ponder Jesus’ words. In this way, we continue to build an atmosphere of compassion, trust, and family in which each is known and loved.

The “Being Christ to Others” Award is given to students who go above and beyond our normal expectations on a daily basis. These students are recognized at Mass and presented with a framed certificate and pin in front of the entire student body. The Crusader of Service Award is given to students who demonstrate Catholic virtue to others. This award is given by the Principal and includes a certificate and a crusader locket magnet.

Holy Cross School Continues to Expand In a climate where many Catholic schools are experiencing a decrease in enrollment, Holy Cross School in Batavia is an exception. The school has expanded its facilities every year since it opened in 2008 and the 2016/2017 student population is now double from its initial enrollment. “In just eight short years, Holy Cross Catholic School has become one of the leaders in academic excellence and Catholic faith formation in the Fox Valley area,” said Michael Kagan, Superintendent of Schools, Rockford Diocese. The upcoming academic year brings many

enhancements to the school including a new fouryear-old pre-Kindergarten program offered five days per week; a state of the art security system with cameras throughout the school and church; Chromebooks for every class and Ipads for Kindergarten; a school day Spanish language program for middle school students and after school Spanish program for elementary students; and increases in the size of the technology room, music room and library. “The continual expansion we experience is evidence of our achievements,” said Mike Puttin,

The number of scholarships represents a new record for the eight-year old school. “The scholarships are a testimony to the motivation of our students and the solid academic foundation offered by Holy Cross,” said Mike Puttin, Principal. According to Anthony Tinerella, Head of School and Principal at Marmion Academy, “Students that come to Marmion Academy from Holy Cross are well prepared for the rigors of high school. Holy Cross Home and School Association The most frequent questions posed by parents throughout the school year are, “What is Home and School?” and “What does Home and School do?” and “How do you volunteer?” Most simply explained, Holy Cross Home and School Association (HSA) is very similar to PTA’s or PTO’s in other educational institutions. We have a defined set of by-laws that outline our purpose and functions, with officers and board members selected by the Principal and Pastor on a term basis. What does HSA do? We serve many purposes, all very important - however most commonly we function in the capacity of obtaining funding to use for the school and educational improvements. This includes monthly efforts (field trips, classroom supplies & parties, online programs, etc.,) and school year specific initiatives. For example, during the 2015-2016 school year we focused on technology. We increased the inventory from 30 Chrome books/ cart for grades 5-8 to an additional 80 chrome books and 3 additional carts. By doing this each grade (5-8) received 1 cart of chrome books to share throughout school year. This allows teachers in each grade the flexibility to plan within the grade and share as needed. For the 2016-2017 school year we purchased a sound system for the gymnasium with a projector and drop down screen. It is currently being utilized for assemblies, sporting activities and special events. How can you help? There are many opportunities to volunteer on various committees throughout the year - even if you work outside of the home. We have three classroom parties, monthly breakfasts or lunches for the teachers and special events overseen by the Hospitality Committee, as well as, Daddy/Daughter Dance committee, Walk A Thon committee and Fun lunch....just to name a few. Please consider becoming active in the Holy Cross Community and your child’s educational experience at Holy Cross Catholic School by volunteering and making memories.

Letters & Quotes from the parents

Thursday, January 26, 2017

“Come and See.” John 1:39 Our Lord seemed to be talking to us with these words as we considered enrolling our children in the new Catholic School under construction at Holy Cross Parish. Like so many other curious parents, we came to those initial meetings, asked questions, were intrigued by the answers, and signed registration forms, trusting God would help us pay that tuition! Mysteriously, we found ourselves learning and growing, too, as Tom headed to Mrs. Laura Behee’s 4th grade classroom and Clare to Mrs. Bobbie Von Lunen’s 1st Grade when those inviting doors opened wide in August, 2008. As parents, we had Faith in our priests’ leadership. Monsignor Deutsch (Fr. Dan back then) placed Christ first in Mass, in prayer, in selection of books, in celebration of Feast Days, through classroom statues, on banners in the gym, in daily announcements and in our hearts. We were encouraged to listen and trust Him and were blessed as a result. We also had Hope in our glorious teachers. Every

single Holy Cross faculty and staff member has brought their unique Spirit and enthusiasm to the challenge, to bring us together in Love and excellent instruction, whether they stayed briefly or all these years. So many gave up meaningful jobs at other fine schools to join this Mission of God’s. Along with decorating Homerooms and mapping curriculums, they accepted the vocation of helping create a Family here for Christ. A few words on paper can’t do full justice to the Wonder of those first, fledgling years: So much was critiqued and refined; annual All Saints Day parades and Marian processions brought so much joy; we adapted to a crazy 3am sprinkler malfunction (closed school for just one day!) and frequent schedule changes; inevitable growing pains were endured with ever-present Grace; laughter and teamwork spread inside and beyond the building walls; in truth, Holy Cross School grew like every Family, with learning and loving the steady Goal every single day. Ten years later, Holy Cross School still invites us all

into the tremendous mystery of Christ’s Light in our world. Tom and Clare are just two of so many students distinctively better for the opportunity to be part of this adventure. We early arrivals have sometimes been called pioneers; in fact, maybe we, like each of us in our own time, have just followed the same mysterious Call that has been tugging on hearts since the first apostles met Our Lord. Along this Way, He intends to teach us about Charity, to share His Word, to be fortified by His Sacraments, to honor His Mother, to learn from His Saints, to allow His Spirit to guide us, and to rest in His Presence. In the unsteady, challenging world of parenting in this new millennium, we thank God for inviting us to Holy Cross School. We will treasure forever all that He has given us in being part of this holy Place. “For no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor 3:11 ~ Jim and Debbie Glemkowski

Quotes from Holy Cross Parents, Past & Present “We wish all the schools in the world could be like Holy Cross School.”

“Starting every day with Mass has been a blessing”. “My daughter loved Holy Cross School. She made life long friends there who are to this day her closest friends. Her faith grew big and is now an adoration adorer every Tuesday and has never missed a Sunday Mass since she started college.”

“We loved Holy Cross and have nothing but fond memories of our time there”.

“Thank you for keeping Christ in the center of our school.” “Transferring to Holy Cross was one of the greatest gifts in our lives, for my daughter and our entire family. I wish my daughter could stay there forever. My daughter has had the best experience so far in her life, growing closer to God, making her communion, preparing for confirmation, gaining lifelong friends, all while knowing she is prepared for high school is truly a blessing.”

“My son’s experience at Holy Cross, including the excellent academic challenges from outstanding teachers, helped prepare him well for the rigors of high school.”
