LOMBARD – For Healthy Lombard founder Jay Wojcik, the growth the nonprofit foundation has experienced in the past five years is extremely encouraging. “I’m so blessed and happy that people see that this is a valuable organization and want to be a part of it,” Wojcik said. Healthy Lombard will host its annual Fitness February Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 in the center court at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard. There will be 26 unique tables – up from 18 last year – and each one will be interactive, Wojcik explained. “People mean well, [but] watching last year, it was a lot of grab-and-go,” she said. “If they can come to the tables and do something, they’ll remember the activities they did and go away with some new information that they didn’t have before.” Guests will receive a card, and those that complete 16 of the 26 activities will automatically be entered into a raffle to win prizes. Activities include a bean bag toss, food

ing awareness, the first “A,” about childhood obesity and healthy living, Wojcik said. From there, the foundation turned to parts two and three – activities and achievements. Activities include the February fair and the G.Y.M. (Get Yourself Moving) Bags, a program for all second-graders in Lombard intended to promote 60-minutes of exercise a day on weekends. The Health Heroes winners are an example of achievement. “We’re honoring people, and now we’re honoring organizations that have made a difference in the people that work for them,” Wojcik said. Moving forward, the foundation’s goal is to promote expansion in other municipalities across DuPage County, Wojcik said. Addison, Bensenville, Elmhurst and Villa Park are among the towns where individuals have expressed interest in starting their own health foundation, Wojcik said. “Our mission [now] is to be a template for other towns,” Wojcik said. “We’re more than happy to share our successes and failures. Pretty soon, we’ll have most of DuPage County doing their own thing, which is great.”

Village’s credit rating lowered to ‘B’ Unwillingness to pay Westin bond debt prompts downgrade By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – For the second time in 24 months, the village of Lombard has had its credit rating lowered. The most recent downgrade was prompted by the village’s unwillingness to pay bond debt related to an affiliate agency established to finance the Westin Hotel and Conference Center. Standard & Poor’s on Wednesday lowered Lombard’s issuer credit rating from BBB to B, according to a release from the Wall Street credit rating agency. The downgrade reflects a recent nonappropriation that triggered a payment default for revenue bonds issued by the Lombard Public Facilities Corp., Standard & Poor’s credit analyst John Kenward said in an S&P news release. The B rating reflects very weak management, stemming

from a lack of willingness to support appropriation debt, Kenward said. With a lower credit score, the village will be required to borrow money for capital improvement projects at a higher interest rate. In December 2013, the Lombard Village Board voted not to appropriate funds to pay debt service on the LPFC’s series 2005B revenue bonds, pursuant to a tax rebate agreement, according to Standard & Poor’s. The village’s refusal to make a $1.9 million payment subsequently pushed most of the $195 million in bonds for the hotel to go into default. The LPFC, a separate entity, was established in 2003 to issue bonds needed to finance the Westin construction project. The group is the legal owner of the hotel until the bonds are paid, at which time ownership will be transferred to the village. Bond payments were originally to be covered by facility revenues from the Westin Hotel and Conference Center, which opened in August 2007. But with a weak economy, the Westin has been unable to finance the bonds. The current village board is tasked with the aftermath of the financial arrangement between LPFC and bond holders, village trustee Peter Breen

said. Residents were assured at the time that they would not be on the hook financially, he said. “When this arrangement was made, the taxpayers were told that the general obligation debt was not at risk,” he said. “So the very savvy investors who structured this deal certainly cannot realistically assume taxpayers are going to cover the over $100 million shortfall in bonds.” Village officials were aware that their credit rating would likely be downgraded, confirmed Lombard’s Director of Finance Tim Sexton. The downgrade will not impact any village services utilized by taxpayers, Sexton said. Lombard still plans on working to restructure the bond debt, Sexton confirmed. “We will continue to work with the bond issuer to seek a long-term solution,” he said. The village’s financial management is otherwise strong, but the credit agency will continue to assess Lombard’s overall management as very weak until payment is made in a full and timely manner, according to Standard & Poor’s. Lombard’s credit rating was lowered from AA to BBB in January 2012, a move made

a week after the village board voted against appropriating about $1 million in village funds to make a payment on LPFC’s bonds. At the time, staff informed trustees that refusing to appropriate the funds would be considered in violation of a “moral obligation bond,” and

could result in a credit-rating downgrade. The village’s position has not changed, Breen said. “We still have a great hotel, and we are willing to do whatever we can to help resolve the financial situation,” he said. “We are certainly ready and willing to negotiate.”

USA Ice Team captain is ready for world competition By MATTHEW PIECHALAK

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Snow crunches beneath Mike McNett’s feet as he uses a hand auger to drill a hole into the thick ice on the pond at Westmore Woods in Lombard. The water makes a “slooshing” sound as he retracts the drill and clears away ice fragments bobbing on the surface of the water. It’s a frigid Monday afternoon, despite the abundant sunshine, and McNett, a Lombard resident and USA Ice Team captain, is getting in a few minutes of practice. Team USA will leave Saturday morning to compete in the 11th World Ice Fishing Championship in Belarus – a country that borders Poland, Ukraine and Russia. The championship, Feb. 18 to 24, is held in the country’s Minsk

region in an area commonly used as a Summer Olympics training ground for local rowers. “If there is any way to bring international countries and people together, it’s fishing,” he said. McNett, 48, sets the line on his palm rod and lowers the slack below the surface of the pond. The palm rod, which typically measures between just 4 and 7 inches, includes a small indicator and allows an ice angler to sense the smallest bite on their line. He repeats the steps a couple times before catching a small bluegill and retrieving it from the hole.

In the world championship, speed is the name of the game. The course is divided into five zones, and one angler from each team occupies a given zone. The two-day competition includes a threehour heat each day. The total weigh of fish caught per team in the six hours determines the winner. For McNett, who won the national championship at the 2005 North American Ice Fishing Circuit, the difference between U.S. events and the world championship is the lack of technology allowed on the international level. Fishers are prohibited from using underwater cameras and other high-tech gadgets to locate Matthew Piechalak – mpiechalak@shawmedia.com and attract fish. “When you go to the world Mike McNett, a Lombard resident and captain of the USA Ice Team, [event], you’re actually going deposits ground bait into the water Monday to attract fish at West-

SEEING THROUGH HIGH-DEFINITION LENSES One of the most significant advances in the manufacturing of eyeglass lenses involves the introduction of “free form” technology. This revolutionary digital manufacturing process makes it possible to transform the way we see through eyeglass lenses much in the same way that high-definition TV improved upon older analogue TV pictures. Precision diamond-cut high-definition (digital) lenses utilize computer-aided design and surfacing to customized eyeglass lenses that provide unsurpassed correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. As a result, highdefinition lenses provide sharper image quality, better peripheral vision, improved contrast sensitivity, and less night glare. While these lenses cost a bit more, most find the added expense is more than worth the improved vision they provide. SKOWRON EYE CARE combines today’s modern technology with personalized attention directed specifically to the eye care needs of our patients. We feature a large selection of quality eyewear, including designer frames. Some of our brands include Ray Ban, Fossil, Gucci, Silhouette, Nine West, Juicy Couture, Coach, Maui Jim, and Cole Haan. We are happy to help you select the eyewear that fits properly and is right for your face shape and skin tone. To schedule an appointment, please give us a call today. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Free-form lens-manufacturing technology can surface lenses in power increments of 0.01 diopter (D) compared with 0.125 to 0.25 D increments of conventional eyeglass lens tooling.

Heavy snow taxing Lombard Public Works budget By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The fourth-snowiest winter in the history of Lombard has meant heavy overtime hours being used by the village’s public works department. As of Jan. 30, the department has spent $145,000 in overtime, seasonal and commodity expenses – a total which represents roughly 77 percent of the annual bud-

• ICE Continued from page 6 back in time,” McNett said. “You’re using your intuition and [fish] feed to attract the fish.” Fishers can drill as many holes as they like, but only two can be marked at any point. The active holes are designated with pegs and prior to fishing, teams will “feed” their holes with ground bait to at-

get. If you add the significant snowfall in the past two weeks, the total is closer to 90 percent, Lombard Public Works Director Carl Goldsmith said. “We are heavily taxed, but there is an end in sight,” Golfsmith said Feb. 6 during a report at a Lombard Village Board of Trustees meeting. The village has received more than 40 inches of snow this season, compared to a total of 20 inches of snow last year, Goldsmith said.

“Staff has been working generally around the clock since Christmas to keep the town safe,” he said. “They’ve done an excellent job, and they should be commended.” Goldsmith acknowledged receiving both positive and negative comments on snow removal and thanked residents and business owners for their patience. “It is not a quick process,” Goldsmith said. “We do the best job we can.”

tract the fish. Teams are prohibited from fishing within the zones during their training days leading up to the championship, meaning it can be beneficial to have a game plan, but also critical to know when to bail on the plan quickly when the fish aren’t biting, McNett said. Each team member is allowed a spotter on the ice. “Their eyes are on the rest of the fishers and telling our

guy in the US what techniques they’re using,” McNett said, adding that it’s important for fishers to swallow their pride and listen to the spotter when given direction on when to relocate. “Sometimes you can get all the countries on a single school of fish and it will just be who can catch the most.” Team USA has competed in the world championship each year since 2009, taking home first place in U.S. waters

Damaged mailboxes Occasionally, the department gets complaints from residents who report their mailboxes have been knocked down. The force of plowing the snow is often the cause, Lombard Public Works Director Carl Goldsmith said, adding that the department temporarily replac-

in 2010 in Rhinelander, Wis. and fourth place last year in Wausau, Wis. Preparation for the event begins roughly a year in advance, when between 50 and 60 anglers compete in open trials to make the U.S. team. This year’s trials will be held March 14 to 16 in Rhinelander. “It gives the guys who make the team an opportunity to do their fundraising and to tell their bosses that they need the time off,” McNett said.

es mailboxes knocked down and will permanently replace them this spring. To report a collapsed mailbox, call the department at 630-6205740. A temporary mailbox will be provided by the department by the end of the business day, Goldsmith said.

For McNett, the vice chairman of the United States Freshwater Fishing Federation, the most exciting thing about ice fishing is not competing or coaching, but hosting demonstration events for children and growing the sport, he said. While he hopes to one day see ice fishing in the Winter Olympics, McNett acknowledged that there are hurdles. “The hardest part about it is you’re dealing with an animal,” he said.

Alert: Sidewalks are awful I would like to comment on the sidewalks south of 55th Street in Westmont. There have been other terrible years in the past, but this year, it’s just awful. The people and the businesses do not clean the sidewalks and there’s a lot of foot traffic. People are walking in the street and they’re riding bikes in the street and I was wondering if something couldn’t be done to alert village of Westmont of the problem of the sidewalk south of 55th Street in Westmont.

Allow only 1 car on street Regarding the parking problem in Brookfield, I think maybe the village should institute one car per family to be allowed to park on the street and if you have two, three, four cars, then you need to put them in the garages or someplace else because there is limited parking. Also, why don’t people park their cars in front of their homes instead of in front of somebody else’s. Everyone has one designated parking spot in front of their home. They should park their car in front of their home.

Good job by public works Pat on the back and a tip of the halo to the Berwyn Public Works Department for a great job in snow removal. Unfortunately, the police department has been lax in enforcing the ordinances concerning cars left on the streets for more than three days and have

I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

Skepticism toward Lemont sports complex I am becoming more skeptical as events occur surrounding the proposed Lemont Sports Complex. Our elected officials have circumvented a public vote on the project with their plan to pledge taxes, other than property taxes, and taking out loans to finance the project. If the complex fails, such as the one in Bridgeview, the residents could be faced with increased property taxes to pay the debt. Mission trip provides health care in Honduras By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – For Tom Brauer, co-leader of a group from Peace Lutheran Church that recently returned from a mission trip to Honduras, traveling to impoverished areas to provide healthcare is an impactful experience that often leads to “divine appointments.” A divine appointment is an experience in which an individual relates directly to another human being and is able to offer help or advice, said Brauer, of Wheaton. “It’s a pretty amazing thing when these people that live 2,200 miles apart do share common experiences in life and can help one another,” Brauer said. The Lombard church sent about 50 people to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, last month as part of World Gospel Outreach, a nonprofit organization that serves the poor in Tegucigalpa and “seeks to physically and spiritually touch them with the love of Jesus Christ,” according to the organization’s website. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras, with a population of 1.12 million. “We set up medical clinics in different churches around the city and provide medical help for them,” said Brauer, who has been on 18 trips in the past 14 years. During the recent trip, the volunteers saw 5,326 patients, Brauer said. Mary Steinbach of Elm-

hurst has attended 12 trips to Honduras through World Gospel Outreach including the most recent trip. Bringing medical, dental and optical aid to the Honduran people is one goal for the mission trips, she said. The group also provides concrete floors for families living in the dirt and offers to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those interested, Steinbach said. “I’m thankful for the many comforts I’ve come home to, and I have a greater appreciation for my fellow team members as we grew closer through the week,” she said. Peace Lutheran Church Pastor Marty Hufford, who has been on two trips, said it’s an incredible way to serve those less fortunate. “People will walk for hours to go to one of the stations because they have no health care and they have needs,” Hufford said. The overall mission of the trips, as written in scripture, is to serve those in need, Hufford said. “Spiritually, we want to think of Matthew 25,” Hufford said. “We want to take that very seriously here in our local community and around the world.”

Doctors closer to home. It’s only natural.

ED • Friday, February 14, 2014 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

To the Editor: I recently introduced Senate Bill 2790 to give Illinois families and businesses nearly $450 million in Illinois sales tax relief on gasoline. Illinois is one of seven states with a sales tax on gasoline in addition to a per gallon tax. This is a tax on a tax and terrible fiscal policy. Even worse, the gasoline sales tax collected doesn’t even go to support roads, it goes to the state’s General Revenue Fund. My plan calls for reducing the sales tax on gasoline. It saves Illinois families and businesses hundreds of dollars per year. After Gov. Pat Quinn and the Democrats raised income taxes 67 percent, Illinoisans deserve some relief. Part of the remaining sales tax will be dedicated toward a program to begin repairing our failing roads and bridges. The American Society of Engineers reported that 73 percent of Illinois’ major roads are in poor or mediocre condition (annually costing $292 per motorist in extra repair expenses) and found 2,311 of Illinois’ bridges to be structurally deficient. Lowering this sales tax not only saves families money, it helps gasoline and convenience stores bordering other states with lower gas taxes. We lose millions of dollars to border states when Illinoisans cross the border to buy lower priced gasoline then stay and purchase groceries and other items. We need a top-to-bottom review of all taxes and fees that are currently levied. This proposal is my first step in that comprehensive reform of the way we raise and spend tax dollars.

and security. If you Google in smart meters on the Internet, immediately it will come up with smart-meter dangers. And there’s many, many listings.

Shovel your sidewalks People in Darien, shovel your sidewalks. If you can’t, hire someone. A teenage boy went around our neighborhood asking home owners to hire him – a few did. Ones that did not still haven’t shoveled. If you have a corner house, do all your walks. I’m tired of having my kids walk in the street to their school bus stop, and I don’t enjoy walking my dogs in the street.

Parking ticket reply I agree. Why isn’t Brookfield ticketing or towing cars? A fire truck was trying to drive down my street the other day to shovel paths to the hydrants, and they couldn’t get through at the south end of the block, so they had to back it up to get out. On Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, someone had been plowing the sidewalks for a while, and I was so grateful, but it seems like they just gave up about three snowfalls ago. The only place to walk now is in the streets or alleys, since only a few of the businesses bother to shovel.

LOMBARD – Gianorio’s Pizza and Pasta, 434 S. Main St. in Lombard, will hold a fundraiser from 3 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26 to collect money for the Edwin F. Deicke Home, which is in jeopardy of closing its doors after 31 years in town. Gianorio’s will donate 10 percent of sales during the fundraiser when presented with a “Help Save the Deicke Home flier. The private residential home, 1005 E. Division St., for adults with developmental disabilities an-

nounced recently that it will close March 31 if it cannot secure enough funding to remain open. It costs about $20,000 a month to run the home, according to Bruce Thompson, director for the home. The goal is to raise $100,000 to allow the home roughly five months to work on a longterm financial plan. Roughly 70 percent of the total operating cost comes from donations and fundraising. Customers must present a flier to have 10 percent of their bill donated to the home.

Herren is the author of “Basketball Junkie” and the subject of the ESPN film “Unguarded.” The program is free and open to all. No registration is required. A parent-to-parent discussion will take place before the event at 6:30 p.m. All Glenbard students will hear Herren’s presentation at all-school assemblies Thursday and Friday during Live Life Well Week.

Students at all four Glenbard Township High School District 87 schools will be urged to take charge of their mental and physical health during the district’s Live Life Well Week next Monday through Friday. The theme of this year’s week is “You Are Your Choices – Live Life Well.” Programs during the week seek to raise social awareness, advance interpersonal skills and develop responsible decision-making skills, according to a district news release. Live Life Well Week will begin with the district’s first-ever Glenbard Day of Service event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center, 800 W. St. Charles Road, Glen Ellyn. Students are invited to spend President’s Day making blankets to be donated to local hospitals as part of Project Linus. The week also will feature a Glenbard Parent Series event at 7 p.m. Wednesday with former Boston Celtics basketball star Chris Herren, who will present “Unguarded – It’s Never too Late to Follow Your Dreams” at Glenbard North High School, 990 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream.

On Wednesday, the schools will host special programs that include: • Lunch and Learn for Good Nutrition at Glenbard East • Glenbard Health Fair at Glenbard North • Take a Seat and Make a Friend at Glenbard South • Every Kid Healthy Expo at Glenbard West. The Glenbard District 87 Wellness Committee will partner with the schools’ physical education and family and consumer science departments to host the Glenbard Health Cooking Challenge student competitions during the week. Following the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate dietary guidelines, students will develop tasty and healthy dishes. Judges will choose two winning recipes, and students will prepare the recipes and serve them in their school cafeterias. The dish that receives the most votes will be featured on the school menu. Other special Live Life Well Week events include blood drives, healthy breakfasts and an Operation Teen Safe Driving initiative. The week’s events were coordinated by the Students for Students clubs at each school, in partnership with other student organizations and several school departments.

‘Doubtful Abbey’ marks 10 years of mystery theatre By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com Most people wouldn’t expect a cozy community like Elmhurst to be the site of heinous crimes, but every year for the last decade, someone is murdered right around this time of year. The GreenMan Theatre Troupe’s annual mystery dinner theatre production is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year with a birthday party for Dowager Duchess, Lady Dolores Fussworthy. “It’s very immediate theatre,” said Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff, director and writer of “Doubtful Abbey: Murder and Mayhem at Fussworthy Masion.” Thomas-Davidoff worked on the lighting for the troupe’s very first mystery dinner, “The Boardwalk Melody Hour Murders,” in 2004 and has been involved ever since. “When we started, we didn’t know if we were going to be able to continue,” said David Soria, the theatre’s artistic director. The first mystery dinner was meant to be a one-time fundraiser to get the new community theatre off the ground, but the audience demanded more. The annual production still functions as a fundraiser, which Soria said is essential to GreenMan. Because the annual event is a fundraiser, an original script saves the theatre money on royalties, but it’s also exciting for cast members like Ashley Thompson of Roselle. In her second production with GreenMan, Thompson said her favorite part about the troupe is the closeness of the cast and crew. “I see these great friendships and relationships being made,” said Soria, who met his wife, Katie, a member of the Doubtful Abbey cast, at a past show. Part of community theatre’s appeal, for many involved, is the amount of behind-thescenes work that goes into each performance. “They have to turn their lives upside down to be able to

Shazad Mehta works at his family business, Mehta Motors, in Elmhurst, but lives in Chicago. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but everyone gives many hours to each production. “I’ve always kind of been the ham of the family,” said Mehta, an Elmhurst native who will be performing in his ninth GreenMan production this season. Thomas-Davidoff remembers Mehta’s first audition just before she was ready to call it quits after a couple of hours without a standout performance. “To me, the play just took off at that point,” she said of Mehta’s audition. The casting call makes all the differencem said Thomas-Davidoff. The Western Springs teacher spends most of her summer writing or co-writing the murder mysteries, but during her winter break she rewrites the script after meeting the cast. Once, she even created an entirely new character for an actress who came to a casting call. As much as she enjoys writing the script, Thomas-Davidoff also likes how the dinner theatre setting gives the cast the opportunity to involve the audience. Over the years, some guests have started wearing period costumes to the shows. Prior to the show, the cast

mingles with the audience during a cocktail hour, and during the performance, characters often make their way between tables and involve audience members in the show. “You can imagine that there’s some people who just want to watch the play, and then there are other people who are eager to have the cast members approach them,” Thomas-Davidoff said. Whether audience members want to observe or get into the act, for first-time GreenMan cast member Kitty Mortland of Chicago, the accessibility of community theatre is what makes it special. “We’re all here enjoying an evening of art together,” Mortland said.

Restaurant reviews

Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my

mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

East wrestlers confident heading to sectional tourney By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – In many other wrestling regionals, Glenbard East might have had a chance to win the team title. Instead, the host Rams were forced to settle for second to state favorite Oak Park-River Forest at their own regional tournament. Seven East wrestlers advanced to this weekend’s Leyden sectional, which is down from the nine that advanced to sectionals last year, but all seven should have a good chance to advance to state. “I think all seven of our sec-

Being stuck with OPRF, a school 14 miles from Glenbard East, in a regional meant the Rams had virtually no chance of winning a regional despite having the most successful team in school history. The Huskies have traveled out of the state to face elite competition and are ranked as one of the top teams in the country. “It would have been nice to win a regional,” Johnson said. “OPRF is just really good. To finish second to them is pretty good. “We got seven [to the sectional], which isn’t as good as last year. For our team, that’s still really good.”

Montini has five state trophies in the past six seasons, including four in a row. Willowbrook is in search of its first regional title since 1996, which ended a run of four straight regional titles and also was the last time the Warriors won conference. Glenbard East has four playoff victories in the past five seasons. York had a losing record the last time the Dukes won a regional, which was 2009. Timothy Christian, which is now in Class 3A, won Class 2A regionals in 2009 and 2011. Addison Trail last won a regional title in 1985.

Addison Trail Class: 4A Regional: Batavia Sectional: Addison Trail Seed: No. 19 First game: 7 p.m. Monday vs. No. 14 Elk Grove Outlook: The Blazers won just four games in the regular season. Connie Barkoulies and Katie Dziabis have been key players for an AT team which didn’t have much varsity experience entering the season. If AT can pull off a first round upset against Elk Grove, regional host Batavia would be up next on Tuesday.

Ross and the Broncos start postseason play next week as one of the favorites to win a title in Class 3A. lead a talented team that has shown its ability to play with anyone at state. Head coach Jason Nichols has complained about his team’s habit of coasting during games instead of playing hard for the duration. If Montini plays its best, it could win Class 3A. “They just got to choose who they want to be and what they want to be,” Nichols said.

“It has been a tough season, but our girls have turned a corner and our last four games have been much better,” coach Michele Strube said. Timothy would face No. 4 seed Nazareth Tuesday if it wins Monday.

Charles East Outlook: Despite a West Suburban Gold title and a 22-4 record, the Warriors landed just the sixth seed in the sectional. Part of that is because of the Instituto Health Sciences Charter Outlook: The Trojans faced a tough quality at the top of the Addison Trail task this season with five new starters sectional. Wheaton Warrenville South, and a new coach. Of all the new faces, Kaitlyn Gehrke and Juliana Stremler Downers Grove North and Batavia also won conference titles and are have been solid in the paint.

York Class: 4A Regional: York Sectional: Addison Trail Seed: No. 10 First game: 8 p.m. Wednesday vs. No. 7 Proviso West Outlook: After a slow start the Dukes picked up their play in the second half of the season. York enters the playoffs with a 14-12 record, including an 11-4 record since Dec. 23. In the opener, York will face Proviso West for the third time this season. West won both games, but the last meeting on Jan. 31 was just a two-point game when leading scorer Mikaela Boyd went down with an injury. A win against the Panthers likely means a third game against West Suburban Silver champ Downers Grove North in the Feb. 21 final.

Schaumburg Outlook: Despite sporting a young roster, the Rams have shown a lot of improvement this season. East went from zero to four wins in the DuPage Valley Conference this year, with season sweeps of Glenbard North and Naperville Central. Sophomores Ashley Brown, Madison Koch, Brittany Paganucci and Brasia Solid have contributed. Upperclassmen Allison Hansen, Elie Donovan, Tajanae Key and Rachael Leifheit have also played big roles. The Rams open against Schaumburg in a regional quarterfinal. A win would secure a meeting with top sectional seed and DVC champ Wheaton Warrenville South on Wednesday.

seeded ahead of the Warriors. Batavia is in the Warriors’ regional as the No. 3 seed. The Warriors have endured four injuries late in the regular season, but will be healthier come the postseason. Starting forward Melissa Rader and top bench guard Danielle Velasquez are out with ACL injuries. Molly Krawczykowski, who just signed to Illinois State for track and field, uses her speed to lead the Warriors on both ends of the floor. Sophomore forward Josie Zabran has been a key post player since being called up to the varsity team midseason. “I have a lot of confidence in the girls,” coach Terry Harrell said. “It looks ugly sometimes, but they usually get it done.” Willowbrook opens against St. Charles East, which it defeated 67-54 at Wheaton North’s holiday tournament. The regional title game is Feb. 20.

Suburban Life ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

York Senior | Basketball Why Toohey was selected: Toohey became the all-time wins leader in York boys basketball history after the Dukes’ 51-38 win against Glenbard West on Feb. 7.

How do you rate this accomplishment? It’s pretty cool. I’ve never been a big record guy, but really what it means is I’ve had the best teammates and coaches when I’ve been here. I’m not trying to get my numbers.

FRANK TOOHEY

York senior forward Frank Toohey doesn’t always put up the biggest numbers, but all he has done since joining the Dukes’ varsity team is win. He scored 18 points in York’s win at Glenbard West on Friday for his 84th win in a Duke uniform. Toohey, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about what the accomplishment says about his play and the state of the program.

8PREP ROUNDUP

What does it say about the state of the program that York has had such a great run in recent years? I think this season we’ve had fantastic chemistry. Everyone is willing to step up. No one is trying to steal the show. We don’t care who does well or who does what. We just want to win.

Does it change your perspective at all to hear that York has been playing since 1920? It’s really cool. It’s something that I’m proud of. I’m proud of all these teams that I’ve been on. We’ve definitely been on a good stretch since I’ve been here. I’ve been fortunate to play with many, many great players, a couple playing Division I in Will Sullivan and David Cohn.

DRAWING WITH MARK! Happy VaLentine’s Day! Decorate this card with your choice of colors, and maybe sparkles, too. Then cut along the dashed line and give to someone to wish them a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Perhaps you’ve heard this classic Valentine’s Day poem, and maybe you’ve even read it to someone you love. This Valentine’s Day, work on making your own version of the poem. It can be funny, silly or sincere. Just have fun with it. Start out with “Roses are red” as the irst line. This sets up the poem for your readers so they know to expect your own version of this classic form. Write four lines. Four lines is the common form this poem uses, so stick to that. Keep it short and silly! Part of the charm of this form is that it is short, sweet and to the point. Each line should have between four to six syllables — use seven only if you have to. be creative. The classic form uses a color on the second line, but you don’t have to. Instead of a color, you can use another descriptive word on that line — sight, sound, taste and feeling all work in place of a color. Rhyme it. Rhyming this poem keeps it feeling light, fresh and musical. Traditionally, you should use words that sound the same at the end of the second and fourth line of the poem (“blue” rhymes with “you” in the original). You can also rhyme lines three and four.
