LOMBARD – For SUPER Plunge veteran Mike McDermott, the toughest part of the annual fundraising event is that first jump into an icy Lake Michigan. “I don’t care how many times you’ve done it,” said McDermott, of Lombard. “The first one will suck every breath out of your body.” Forty-three individuals participated in the 9th Annual Special Olympics Illinois SUPER Plunge, held last weekend at North Beach on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. During the 24-hour event which began at 2 p.m. Feb. 21, participants jumped into Lake Michigan once an hour. The event, which raised a total of $166,621 this year, kicked off the 2014 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge season, and proceeds will support Special Olympics athletes who compete free of charge in more than 180 sporting events throughout the year. In it’s first seven years, the SUPER plunge raised $545,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. Each individual was asked to raise a minimum of $2,500

HELP FOR CHILDREN’S READING PROBLEMS Even though children may have passed school vision screenings and do not complain about their eyes, it may be that they are deficient in any of a number of vision skills required to read well. Aside from visual acuity (the ability to see objects clearly), visual fixation skill is needed to aim the eyes accurately. “Static fixation” is the ability to focus on a stationary object when reading a word or working a math problem, and “saccadic fixation” is the ability to move the eyes quickly and accurately across a page to read print. A comprehensive eye exam also includes an assessment of accommodation, binocular fusion, convergence, field of vision, and visual perception. Many ophthalmologists and pediatricians feel that vision screening can be part of your child’s routine pediatric check-ups -- with referral to an eye care provider if problems are noted. Optometrists, on the other hand, recommend more frequent comprehensive eye exams by an eye care professional. Your health care provider can help you determine what’s appropriate for your child. During the final session, students will meet with the Lombard Village Board of Trustees and attend a board meeting to observe the local government process, Whittington said. Participants will be presented with a certificate of completion at the meeting. The program will accept 10 applicants, and applications are due March 21.

Firefighter sustains injuries SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – A Lombard firefighter sustained minor injuries Monday while conducting roof ventilation at the scene of a residential fire in the 1100 block of Fairfield Avenue. The injuries were very minor, and the firefighter was able to get off the roof on his own, Lombard Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Howell said. “Any time there is a structure fire, we want to get the smoke out of the building because it causes a lot of damage and feeds the fire,” said Howell, referring to the roof venti-

lation process. Firefighters responded to a fire reported near a dryer inside the ranch-style home around 6:30 a.m. Monday, Howell said. The fire was upgraded and brought assistance from neighboring fire departments, including Addison, York Center, Downers Grove, Oak Brook and Villa Park fire protection districts, Howell said. All occupants were able to self-evacuate and were uninjured, Howell said. The fire caused between $80,000 and $100,000 and the origin and cause of the fire are under investigation, Howell said.

The village would then pass the collection along to U.S. Reps. Folks are relying on medications, they’re relying on packages and it’s not being fulfilled.” Whittington confirmed Monday that residents he has heard from received their mail, including backmail, over the weekend. “Hopefully, it’s smooth sailing from here,” he said.

There have been seven days this month when the mail has not come, he said. Treasurer said his overall concern has been the question of where the mail is stored when it cannot be delivered. “It’s a security thing,” Treasurer said. “Reliability would be nice.”

An overview of the upcoming referendum vote in District 87 “Strong schools result in a quality community.” We have all heard this when someone is describing the importance of what strong schools mean to a community. We know the caliber of the local school system greatly impacts a community’s property values, business climate and the overall perceived quality of life within the community. COMMUNITY Glenbard Township High VOICE School District 87 has a longDavid standing tradition of adding excellence and value to the Larson greater community. Critical to continuing that reputation and legacy is ensuring that we are maintaining and continuing to invest in our facilities. On March 18, we will ask voters to approve issuing $35 million in bonds to help finance critical repairs and renovations to our four high schools. These bonds, which would replace bonds that are expiring, would be structured to ensure there is zero increase in our Bond & Interest Fund tax rate. The referendum is focused on the following areas: Student learning and achievement: Classroom renovations and additions, including science labs; Facilities must match 21st century learning; Technology infrastructure investment. Maintaining a community asset: Upgrades and renovations needed for aging community buildings; Quality high schools contribute to property values; High schools used by park districts, colleges, religious organizations and more Health, safety and security: Security upgrades to entrances, access and systems to support student safety; New HVAC systems would provide improved ventilation for a healthier learning environment; Improved handicap accessibility Fiscal stewardship: Replacement of bonds will complement budgeted operational funds to address critical facility needs; Utility savings from upgraded energy systems; Balanced budget; Financial recognition status by state The referendum would help fund projects that will ensure Glenbard high schools continue to be a key factor in advancing the quality reputation of our greater community. Learn more about the referendum at www.glenbard87.org, and be sure to vote March 18.

Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard sent about 50 people to Tegicugalpa, Honduras, last month. The church members set up medical clinics at churches around the capital city, which has high levels of poverty and has been roiled by political instability in recent years. During the trip, volunteers saw 5,326 patients. That’s some important aid to a part of the world that desperately needs it. Village President Keith Giagnorio recently delivered his first State of the Village address at Harry Caray’s in Lombard. His speech was in many respects a litany of all the great things that have happened or are happening in the village, and that’s a testament to a town that has a lot going for it.

Elmhurst College grad pursues pro drag racing career By MATTHEW PIECHALAK

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com Before reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph, it’s vital to clear the mind of distractions, believes aspiring drag racer Marina Anderson. “You can’t bring the stresses of life into the race car because it can be dangerous,” said Anderson, a Villa Park resident and a recent Elmhurst College graduate. “You have to clear your head and feel what the car is doing.” Anderson, 21, took a serious interest in the sport of drag racing as a teenager, when she began working with her father, Scott, the crew chief for Frantic Fueler, a successful nostalgia front-engine dragster. To Anderson, the sport is a thrilling mix of entertainment and really fast cars. “There’s a lot of adrenaline – even when you’re just watching,” she said. “The ground shakes and the smell of nitromethane makes even the biggest men cry.” For the past four years, Anderson has been working hard to build her own 4,000-horsepower rear-engine dragster. She plans to debut her vehicle next month at the annual Detroit Autorama show, and from there, the goal is to qualify for the National Hot Rod Association A/Fuel, the high-speed class for the governing body. Anderson said the vehicle will be capable of reaching

speeds of more than 250 mph and covering a quarter-mile track in 5.3 seconds. Going fast was always a thrill for Anderson. As a child, she gained experience racing go-karts and dirt bikes. The Willowbrook High School alumna placed fourth in the state Skills USA Championship in the category of automotive service technology during her junior year. In 2010, Anderson completed the Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School in Indianapolis, a two-day training course where she got her first experience drag racing on a track. She is currently licensed a Super Comp driver, a class of dragster used during the program. Anderson will have to upgrade that license to A/Fuel before she can compete in the NHRA’s high speed class. With the encouragement and help of her father and family friend, Dave Daunheimer, the owner of Competition Fabrications in Maple Park, Anderson set out to build her own A/Fuel dragster four years ago. “I had to build my own because the cars are so expensive.”

Anderson, who graduated earlier this month from Elmhurst College with dual majors in supply chain management and economics, is currently seeking marketing sponsors to help fund her dream of racing on the professional level in the NHRA Drag Racing Series. With an outline of her marketing plan in place, Anderson turned to Kelly Cunningham, associate professor of business and MBA program director at Elmhurst College. Cunningham, who taught Anderson in a strategic management class, said he was unaware of Anderson’s interest in auto racing. “She brought me her sponsorship plan and I was just fascinated with her whole story,” Cunningham said. “She is modest, but very ambitious and determined to succeed.” Cunningham suggested that once the dragster is complete, that Anderson take the finished product directly to potential sponsors. “It’s important to show what the sponsor will receive for their money– where their label would go on the car of uniform,” he said. Climbing into a dragster and strapping in, nerves begin to set in for Anderson, but once the engine starts, there is a strange calming effect, she said. “Even though it’s really loud around you, it’s calming in a way,” she said.

t National University of Health Sciences, if you’ve finished your general education requirements, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in as little as 16 months. Not only that, NUHS gives you the freedom to tailor your own degree program by letting you create a course list that matches your unique goals. Whether you plan to use your science education for a career in business, health care, or as a prelude to graduate school, you can construct a specific program to give you the best preparation. According to Dr. Randy Swenson, dean of NUHS’ College of Allied Health Sciences, “You can choose from any combination of courses in our BS program to complete your bachelor’s degree. There are no required core courses, just a requirement that you earn 64 credits. So no matter which of our many courses you pick to meet those credits, you’re on track.” That means that if you are interested in medical administration or hospital work, you can choose courses in Medical Spanish, Medical Terminology and Computer Software. Planning a career in sports and fitness, how about adding courses in Sports and Performance Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology? If you are looking for a place in research or laboratory work, you might choose courses in Research Methods and Statistics, or Epidemiology. If you want to learn more about how the brain works, NUHS offers Biopsychology and Neuroscience. “Most of our students are interested in nutrition,” Dr. Swenson says. “That’s why NUHS has six separate courses in nutrition and food science available in the BS program.” NUHS is a primary destination for those seeking a professional career in natural health care. Originally founded in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National’s academic programs now encompass chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, oriental medicine, massage therapy, and more. The best part of earning your bachelor’s degree at National University is that you’ll be taught by many of the same faculty who teach in the professional degree programs, and you’ll use the graduate-level facilities of one of the world’s top universities specializing in natural medicine. NUHS boasts an outstanding library of 13,000+ volumes devoted to health science, a cadaver-based gross anatomy laboratory, as well as an on-campus student clinic where you can take advantage of free health services. NUHS’ beautiful 35-acre Lombard campus is conveniently located in suburban Chicago, and offers on-campus housing, financial aid counseling, a student fitness center, and several student social and professional networking organizations. usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Northwood students work with one advisor from application all the way to graduation, assisting them with registration, academic advising, financial aid and ordering books. “With classes in eight-week and weekend formats, students can complete two or more courses in the same 16-weeks it takes traditional students to complete one class,” she says. Students also have the opportunity to earn credit for work and military experience. One student earned 27 credits for her prior work experience, Rosen said. “This made a tremendous impact on the quality of her life by enabling her to complete her degree faster and with substantial savings on top of it.”

Health Department trains police on heroin reversal drug By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Fine mists of water sprayed the air Friday at the DuPage County Health Department during a training session for area police officers, in an effort to ensure 2013’s record number of heroin overdose deaths isn’t repeated. The lesson was part of the department’s DuPage Narcan Program, which puts the non-addictive drug Naloxone, or Narcan, in the hands of local police, allowing them to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. With a rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013, the drug could be a valuable tool, said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala. “These numbers are not nameless, nor are they faceless,” she said. “Each one represents a life lost.” Police are often the first responders to the scene of a drug overdose, sometimes be-

Those two or three minutes can be the difference between life and death, he said. Essentially, those overdosing on heroin become so relaxed they fall asleep and stop breathing, according to Jorgensen. The program’s first participants, including those from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, have successfully trained 364 officers and equipped them with two doses of Narcan each, according to the health

DuPage Narcan Program has trained 23 police departments across three sessions for a total of 1,100 potential trainees. There are plans to train an additional 10 departments and public defender groups for a total of 1,244 officers by May. The health department is seeking additional funding to continue the program.

department. They have been deployed since mid-January, while the additional estimated 541 participants in the Jan. 21 and Feb. 21 sessions hit the streets in March and May, respectively. Ayala said there haven’t yet been any cases where Narcan has been used by trainees. She said the department’s $40,000 investment has sufficiently funded the program, including the $16 individual doses of Narcan, through its most recent training session. The department was looking for partners in the medical community to continue it. This represents one of many county government actions to address what officials call a growing epidemic, including the $100,000 education initiative Be a Hero in DuPage. It is also the first county-wide application of a 2010 state law allowing nonmedical personnel to be trained to use the drug, Ayala said. Jorgensen said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin is working on language for a bill clarifying that trained responders using Narcan can’t be held liable in a civil case. Villa Park Police Chief and member of the DuPage Chiefs of Police Association Robert Pavelchik said the association already had a subcommittee devoted to the topic, but thought more needed to be done.

Who’s equipped with Narcan? Already trained: Addison, Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove, Darien, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Elmhurst, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Hanover Park, Hinsdale, Lombard, Roselle, Villa Park, Warrenville, West Chicago, Westmont, Wheaton, Willowbrook, Wood Dale and Woodridge To be trained: Bensenville, Itasca, Lemont and Oak Brook Other municipalities: Naperville, Carol Stream, Lisle, Oakbrook Terrace, Clarendon Hills and Winfield (Participant in alternate opioid reduction program) “We realized some time ago, especially with the assistance of the coroner, that this has been a problem we’re not going to arrest our way out of,” he said. Jorgensen said that attitude, along with the treatment of addiction as a medical problem instead of a punishable offense, represented a different mindset than that found in the county 15 to 20 years ago. By keeping people alive, he said, it keeps the chance for recovery alive. “One of the people that we work with says that ‘Dying of an overdose is not the first step for recovery or treatment,’ ” Jorgensen said. “You have to understand that this is a medical disease, this is an addiction, this is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.”

Restaurant reviews

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game. Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal. On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

The “super grande platter” of appetizers usually features mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels; on a recent location, according to its onthe baked brownie bottom pie evening, mini corn dogs were substituted for the mozzarella. line beer list. They’ve got all (again, topped with ice cream, it was terrific. Strips of skirt steak are sautéed with fresh garlic and mushrooms, then combined with red wine and brown sauce over fettuccine. Add a dollop of sour cream and the dish is complete. If I hadn’t been so full from the appetizer, I easily could have polished it off; instead, it made for a terrific lunch the next day. My companion was similarly stuffed from the appetizer, and selected the pot

roast over the pot pie, reasoning that the pot pie likely wouldn’t reheat as well. The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

Glenbard East’s Carlos Fuentez wrestles Glenbard North’s Kirk Johansen for third place at 106 pounds at the Class 3A state meet on Saturday. Fuentez won the match for his first state medal while teammate Dayton Olson was also an all-state finisher at 126 pounds.

Precious medals for East’s Fuentez, Olson By DAN SANTAROMITA

Final records

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Carlos Fuentez and Dayton Olson represented Glenbard East well. The Rams sent five wrestlers to state and Fuentez and Olson returned to Lombard with state medals around their necks. Fuentez took third place at 106 pounds and Olson earned sixth at 126. Both seniors earned medals for the first time in their careers. Both wrestlers won their opening match, lost in the quarterfinals and battled in the wrestlebacks to finish with all-state medals. “I think it’s pretty hard to come back in the wrestlebacks and take third when you lose in the quarterfi-

• Carlos Fuentez: 45-6 • D’Andre Johnson: 44-4 • Josh Martin: 34-6 • Dayton Olson: 43-7 • Anfarnee Rodgers: 35-12 nals,” Fuentez said. “It was tough, but I’m glad that I finished off on a good note.” Fuentez lost to eventual state champion Austin O’Connor of St. Rita and rallied for four straight victories in the wrestlebacks. He defeated Kirk Johansen of Glenbard North in the third place match. Last year, Fuentez won just one match in his first state appearance. Ending his high school career with a

medal was a pleasing way to go out. “It feels pretty good,” Fuentez said. “I definitely grew into the weight class. Last year I was weighed in at 103 at the state tournament, so it’s definitely good to be the same size as the guys you’re competing against.” As for Olson, he was one win away from placing last year, but finished off the task this time around. He was also defeated by an eventual state champion, Johnny Jimenez of Marmion, in the quarterfinals before rebounding with two wins in the wrestlebacks. He was hoping for more than a sixth place medal entering the tournament, but it still marks a career-best showing. “To end my season with a loss, that’s not how I wanted to end it. It makes me hungry,” Olson said. “It was a great

season of wrestling. I did way better than all the other years I’ve wrestled. I capped it off not how I wanted to, but I’m in a pretty nice spot.” In addition to the two medalists, three other Rams competed at the State Farm Center in Champaign. Senior Josh Martin (145) and junior D’Andre Johnson (285) each won their first round match and lost in the quarters. Martin won one more match in the wrestlebacks. Senior Anfarnee Rodgers lost both of his matches at 120 pounds. In all, the five Glenbard East wrestlers went a combined 11-10 at state, which is a sharp improvement over the combined record of 5-12 last year.

Montini owns state wrestling medal stand By DAN SANTAROMITA

“This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life. I worked so hard for this one moment and to be the best.”

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – It’s safe to say Montini’s wrestling team had an impressive showing at the individual state tournament last weekend. Five Broncos won state titles and six more earned medals as Montini was well represented on the medal stand. Dylan Duncan (120 pounds), Kegan Calkins (126), Vince Turk (138), Chris Garcia (145) and Xavier Montalvo (170) added their names to a growing list of Montini state champions. Garcia and Montalvo won their second consecutive state titles and Garcia finished his career as a fourtime medalist. “This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” said Calkins, a transfer from Wheaton North. “I worked so hard for this one moment and to be the best.” The senior, who is still undecided on where he will wrestle in college next year, made sure he wasn’t going to let any opportunities pass him by at state. “It’s my last shot, I was just going to give it everything I had and wrestle my best match and leave it all out there,” Calkins said. that sort of match and just move on.” Johnson felt like he could have wrestled better at state, but was still positive on the entire experience. “You can’t be down on it. I got to the finals,” Johnson said. “It was a great tournament and a great experience. The Grand March, there’s nothing like it. There’s nothing like this atmosphere. It’s just a great experience.” The Broncos’ season still lives on in the team dual tournament. Montini defeated Westinghouse 60-12 in a sectional final Tuesday and will face Washington in a state quarterfinal at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The state championship dual will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday.

On the heels of the girls volleyball team’s Class 2A state title in the fall, the girls basketball team earned its first trip to state by defeating Seton Academy 40-38 in a 2A supersectional at Concordia University Monday night. The Knights (25-6) led the entire game and held off the Sting (19-9) down the stretch. IC led 26-15 at halftime, but the Sting gradually got back

Who: IC Catholic vs. Prophetstown When: 8:15 p.m. Friday Where: Redbird Arena, Normal Streaming: IHSA.tv into the game. Following Seton’s potential tying 3-pointer in the final minute, Grace Vitek made two clutch free throws to extend the lead. After Alfatinee Boyd drained a three with 7.3 seconds left the Knights were able to play keep away and kill the clock without being fouled. “This has been our goal

all season,” Vitek said. “Me, Abby [Radoha] and Rory [Manion] have played together since freshman year and we’ve been dreaming of getting to state so it’s a dream come true.” The senior trio led a balanced attack for IC. Vitek and Manion scored 10 points each. Radoha finished with eight points. Manion was a key player for the girls volleyball team and now gets to go back to state for the second time this school year. She will return to the site of the volleyball championship, Redbird Arena. “Getting to state is amazing,” Manion said. “It’s something that my sisters haven’t

done in their high school careers for either sport so getting it for both sports in my senior year is just absolutely indescribable and awesome.” Vitek is a 5-foot-11 guard that presents match up problems for opponents thanks to her all-around game and length. Manion is a physical 6-foot forward that leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game. “Grace and I are partners, basically,” Manion said. “We’re always running the pick and roll. We’re always working as a team.” In the state semifinal, the Knights will take on Prophetstown, which is about 40 miles northeast of Moline. Prophetstown has won more

than 20 games in 14 of the past 16 season, but this is their first state appearance The Lady Prophets enter with a 30-2 record and have a 23-game winning streak dating back to a Dec. 11 loss. Meanwhile, IC has rattled off 16 wins in a row since falling to York on Jan. 3. Regardless of the results in Normal, the Knights will be claiming their first ever state trophy. “This is just great for the school,” coach Aubree Lawrence-Schuett said. “This has never happened in school history for us so I’m thrilled for the kids, I’m thrilled for the community. This is going to be fantastic. I’m looking forward to it.”

CARLOS FUENTEZ Glenbard East Senior | Wrestling Why Fuentez was selected: Fuentez placed third at 106 pounds at the Class 3A state meet in Champaign last weekend. Glenbard East senior wrestler Carlos Fuentez earned his first state medal by taking third at 106 pounds at the state tournament over the weekend. He was one of two Rams to earn all-state honors, along with teammate Dayton Olson, and recovered from a quarterfinal defeat to win four matches in the wrestlebacks to claim his medal. Fuentez, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi in Champaign after he picked up his medal.

I just focused on winning one match at a time, just focusing on that next match ahead of me.

What did you do well at state?

What was key to the third place match against Glenbard North’s Kirk Johansen? I wrestled him at sectionals in the quarterfinals. I don’t think [having wrestled him before] made a big difference. I wrestled him in IKWF [Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation] when we were in eighth grade, so I knew what he was going to do and he knew what I was going to do, so it was good.

Do you have any plans for college yet? I’m not sure yet [where I’m going], but I’m definitely going to wrestle in college.

How did you mentally get ready after losing in the quarterfinals?

I was just trying to break my opponents mentally. I was just trying to go after them. I was trying to wrestle tough, smart and hard.

Steve Cox earned a nice accolade before the college baseball season even began. The Concordia University senior relief pitcher and Willowbrook High School graduate was a second-team selection to D3baseball.com’s preseason All-American team. Last season as a junior, Cox made 17 appearances out of the bullpen and recorded 13 saves as the Cougars went 39-7 and finished the season ranked No. 16 in the country. His 13 saves were the third-most in Division III. He allowed just one unearned run in his 16 innings and fanned 20 batters while walking four.

Postseason tipoff time arrives for boys hoops teams By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The Class 3A and 4A boys basketball postseason begins next week. Teams in the area are hoping to reach Carver Arena in Peoria for the state finals March 20-22.

Addison Trail Class: 4A Regional: Addison Trail Sectional: Bartlett Seed: No. 16 First game: 6 p.m. Monday vs. No. 17 North Lawndale Charter Outlook: The Blazers enter the postseason having lost three in a row and five of their last six games. That slump doesn’t mean they should be overlooked. AT has quality wins over Morton, Hinsdale South and Stagg. All three of those wins came at home. Guard play has been key for the Blazers. Senior point guard James Pupillo is a very good ballhandler that is capable of big scoring nights. Fellow senior guards Ronald Duling and Joe Kurucar are also key to the team. First opponent North Lawndale Charter went 4-6 in the Public League Red West, the same division as powerhouses Whitney Young and Orr. The winner gets top sectional seed York in the March 7 regional final.

Glenbard East Class: 4A Regional: Morton Sectional: Bartlett Seed: No. 21 First game: 8 p.m. Monday vs. No. 12 Bartlett Outlook: After winning the DuPage Valley Conference for the third time in four years last season, the Rams went just 1-13 in the DVC this year. Senior guard Jaron Hall gives the Rams a quality scoring guard, but the rest of the team is very young and inexperienced. Young players like freshman Mike Finley and sophomore Patrick Peterkin have shown flashes of their potential, but will have to put it together if the Rams are to make a playoff run. East opens up on the road at Bartlett, which finished 4-8 in the Upstate Eight Valley. The winner of that game takes on No. 5 seed Conant, which the Rams beat for a regional title last year.

Glenbard East’s Michael Finley (left) muscles past a pair of Andrew defenders in a Jan. 18 game. The Rams open postseason play Monday against Bartlett.

Montini Class: 3A Regional: Genoa-Kingston Sectional: Hampshire Seed: No. 5 in regional First game: 7 p.m. Monday vs. No. 4 Genoa-Kingston Outlook: The Broncos are the No. 5 seed out of five teams at the Genoa-Kingston regional. Montini, which was fourth in the Suburban Christian Gold, is led by senior forward

Matt Brachmann. Brachmann is a double-double machine and a tough physical force inside. His younger brother, Kevin, has emerged as a player to watch and has given the Broncos some quality minutes late in the season. If the Broncos can top Genoa-Kingston, they will then face top regional seed Sycamore.

with 3-point shooting range and good ballhandling skills. The Trojans should be able to get past the regional quarterfinal and would see No. 7 Clemente in a semifinal. Clemente went undefeated in the Chicago Public League’s Blue West, a third-tier conference in the CPL system.

Timothy Christian

Class: 4A Regional: Elk Grove Sectional: Bartlett Seed: No. 23 First game: 8 p.m. Monday vs.

Class: 3A Regional: Timothy Christian Sectional: Glenbard South Seed: No. 13 First game: 7 p.m. Monday vs. No. 23 Instituto Health Sciences Charter Outlook: Losing Khali Valrie in the middle of the season has really hurt the Trojans at the guard position, but senior forward Connor VanderBrug makes them a dangerous opponent for any team. VanderBrug is averaging 21.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He does everything for the Trojans both because he is good enough and out of necessity. The senior forward is 6-foot-6

Willowbrook

No. 10 Wheaton North Outlook: The Warriors went winless in the West Suburban Gold and enter the postseason with just two wins. Regional semifinal opponent Wheaton North is a balanced offensive team led by senior guards Andrew Slivinski and Matt Biegalski. Getting past the Falcons would require an upset, but guards Chris Poole, Ed Mickevicius and Will Unseth can get hot from the outside. Junior Kyle Rushing has also emerged late in the season.

York Class: 4A Regional: Addison Trail Sectional: Bartlett Seed: No. 1 First game: 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 16 Addison Trail or No. 17 North Lawndale Charter Outlook: It’s not a good time of year to have the first slump of the season. The Dukes enter the postseason on a threegame losing streak, after losing just two games all season before that. The losses did come to quality teams: Hinsdale Central, Oak Park-River Forest and Morton. York’s senior laden squad is built for a quick turnaround, but they will have a target on their backs as the top seed in the sectional. Proviso East, OPRF and Morton are the next three seeds, in order, after the Dukes. York could see Lyons Township in a regional final, which would be the fourth meeting between the teams this season. The Dukes won all three games during the regular season.
