Canal association looking to work more with Lemont By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Drawing visitors to downtown is one of the main concerns for Lemont, and members of the Canal Corridor Association believe the Illinois & Michigan Canal could play a role in doing just that. The association, the local coordinating entity for the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, has already expanded its presence in Lemont by opening a small office in the Metra station. Association President Ana Koval, who calls Lemont a key canal community, said she would like to see that office grow so it can provide historical

programs in the village. “I think there are a lot of opportunities to make Lemont a node for activity,” she said. Dennis Bieschke of Lemont is vice chairman of the association’s board of directors and chairman of the Alliance Committee. He served as master of ceremonies March 26 at the Canal Alliance Congress, a conference discussing Canal Corridor issues. Bieschke said the association’s job is to coordinate different entities involved with the canal. He said he would like to see better promotion of the historical importance of the canal, which helped develop the Chi-

cago area as a major trade thoroughfare. “I’m not sure a lot of people in town really understand the significance of the I&M Canal,” he said. He said the portion of the canal in Lemont is unique because the village owns it, rather than the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “Since Lemont owns the portion of the canal in Lemont, they drive that effort (to promote the canal),” he said. “What we would be glad to do is work with them with any ideas they have.” Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said the village can collaborate with the association to procure grants for work on the canal.

“Lemont still has a very active membership in the Canal Corridor Association, and they are another vehicle to help bring more people to town,” he said. Village Planning and Economic Development Director Charity Jones attended the Alliance Congress. She said the conference was a good opportunity to meet with other towns along the Heritage Corridor and discuss ways to promote it. She said the canal is a central part of the village’s comprehensive plan for downtown. “It’s been fairly well established that the canal is something that people find important,” she said.

Bike trail in the works Ground will be broken June 7 for the Cal-Sag Bike Trail, which will end along the Illinois & Michigan Canal near where the Cal-Sag Channel and Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal meet. Potential new D-113A math textbooks available for review SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – A Mathematics Curriculum Leadership Team with Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A has proposed two new sets of math textbooks to be introduced to classrooms next year. During the March 19 Board of

Educationmeeting,theteamsuggested adopting McGraw-Hill’s “My Math” for kindergarten to fifth grade and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s “Go Math” for sixth to eighth grade. The texts would be adopted for three years with an option to renew and would cost $200,000.

They would be consumable, meaning students would be able to keep and write in the books and the district would receive new ones each year. Parents have the opportunity to view the texts before they are voted on for approval by the board April 23.

Viewing hours are available school days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the kindergarten to fifth-grade books and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the sixth-to-eighthgrade books until April 22. The texts do not include the accelerated math texts for fifth and eighth grade, which still need to be chosen.

Assistant Superintendent Mary Gricus said the texts will include online tutorials for students and parents. “Parents would like to help children, but sometimes they feel frustrated because they haven’t participated in math classes for several years,” she said.

Village of Lemont still weeks away from Sports Complex update By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said the village is still in discussions with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District about the proposed Lemont Sports Complex and he hopes to have some direction from the district in four to six weeks. His statement came during the March 24 Lemont Village

Board meeting, at which residents opposed to the project continued to ask questions about the complex. The district owns the land where the village wants to build, and sets the architectural requirements for the project. Reaves said it has been a challenge working with the district in recent months and they “hold all the cards.” “The MWRD is behind Lem-

ont doing what we can do with that piece of land,” he said. “It will all come down to cost.” Reaves said $150,000 to be spent on complex studies has been removed from the village’s proposed 2014-15 budget and they will instead be paid for as part of the village’s project financing plan. “If the project goes forward, any cost associated with the financing will go into the bond,”

said Village Administrator George Schafer. Schafer said the village used a similar practice on facility projects such as the Village Hall and Police Department. Chamber Executive Director Joanna Kmiec said the group launched the site last week after working on it for a couple months. “It has added value to our members,” she said. “They have a lot more control over their own information.” Kmiec said the chamber is in the process of giving members login identification so they can add information to their profiles. Chamber President Anne Marie Evans, who also owns the local Juice Plus+ franchise, already started using some of the site’s new features. She said she likes options such as the “hot deals” com-

LEMONT – Seniors Tom Janik, Rafal Krzysiak and Katie Lynch will represent Lemont High School in the Illinois Drafting Educators Association state finals after finishing on top in the regional competition. Janik and Krzysiak placed first and second in the Assembly Modeling division, while Lynch placed first in the Architectural Board category. “I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Lemont High School industrial technology teacher Scott Duensing. “It was extremely difficult.” Duensing said the competition simulates a business environment by putting a time constraint on the students. All three said they had no expectations of doing well at regionals but are happy to be recognized in a field they plan on pursuing as a career. “It’s just something I like to do,” Janik said. “Apparently, there’s a competition over it.” Krzysiak said he enjoys the creativity involved in engineering. “Engineering to me is that your mind is basically the limit, and in your mind, you have no limits,” he said. None of the three have been to the state finals before. As with the regional competition, they will go in unsure of what to expect. “I would just like to see a lot of people that are really good and learn something new from it,” Lynch said. Krzysiak said he is trying to test himself, but has a modest goal. “I don’t want to be last place,” he said. “As long as I’m not last place, I will be happy.” Janik said he was uncertain

8NEWS BRIEFS Argonne Lab appoints new director Littlewood LEMONT – Peter B. Littlewood has been named director of the Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, according to an Argonne news release. LIttlewood is a University of Chicago physics professor and associate laboratory director for physical sciences and engineering at Argonne.

He starts the position April 1 and will oversee a variety of high-impact projects at the laboratory. Littlewood succeeds Eric D. Isaacs, who is leaving Argonne to become the provost at the University of Chicago.

Despite a fifth consecutive year of declining home values, DuPage County residents will see an average increase of 4 percent on tax bills in 2014, according to a report from the office of County Clerk Gary King. The assessed value of county land dropped 5.4 percent in 2013 to about $32.8 billion from about $34.6 billion in 2012, the report said. At the same time,

Fighting a silent killer in our area – heroin Whether or not you personally know someone who has lost a loved one or friend to a heroin overdose, we have news you need to hear. Last year, there were 46 deaths in DuPage County alone resulting from heroin overdose. Ranging in age from 15 to 64, these victims are much more than faceless statistics. They are sons and daughters; brothers and sisters; cousins, neighbors and friends. Members of the House Republican caucus, especially, state Reps. Dennis Reboletti, Patti Bellock, Sandra Pihos and John Cabello worked together with DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin, the DuPage Heroin COMMUNITY Coalition; and DuPage CounVOICE ty Judicial and Public Safety Jim Chairman Grant Eckhoff to develop a comprehensive Durkin legislative package aimed at every aspect of Illinois’ heroin crisis: treatment, law enforcement and education. Our multifaceted approach would create a pilot program in DuPage County to establish a secure substance abuse treatment facility as a joint partnership between the state and county to serve as a “last chance” option for those convicted of drug crimes. If the results are positive, this program could serve as a statewide model. Further, our plan cracks down on drug traffickers by extending Illinois’ RICO statute’s sunset date to 2022; it’s scheduled to expire in 2017. We would also strengthen asset forfeiture provisions and allow prosecutors to use a portion of the proceeds from seized assets accumulated by gangs in order to fund substance abuse treatment programs. Because prescription opiate abuse is often the gateway to heroin addiction, we would enhance penalties for “doctor shopping” by strengthening current laws to prohibit patients from withholding the fact they have received the same or similar controlled substance from health care practitioners within a specified time frame. Our plan also calls for two critical statewide heroin education initiatives. To help raise awareness of a law which protects people from prosecution for reporting an overdose, we would create an educational initiative to promote the “Good Samaritan” law. In addition, we would have the Department of Human Services create and distribute pamphlets to educate holders of opiate prescriptions about the dangers of children and teens gaining access to medications. Taken together with the commitment of local officials, educators and public health advocates; we will meet the challenge of the heroin epidemic head on.

Turnabout Pizza in Lemont gave a free pizza to a resident who had broken her leg earlier in the evening.

Sometimes a small act of kindness can make a big difference to someone going through a tough time. When Janet Nichols of Lemont broke her leg at home, she had her husband, Milt, cancel a delivery order at Turnabout Pizza so she could go to the hospital. When they later reordered the pizza, Turnabout owner Jill Rooney gave them the pie on the house. Thumbs up to the Lemont Historical Society for funding fun ways to discuss the rich legacy of the village. A recent event was the Historic Heists presentation at Vault Cafe and Bar, which was the site of a 1929 robbery at First National Bank.

Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night. Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours. Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show. Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic. It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel. While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location. Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family. My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth. Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal. Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket. While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty. For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream. The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly. My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces. On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate. The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Clara’s takes a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop and grills it to medium. It’s served over marinara sauce and topped with golden brown mozzarella, Fontinella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses. Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side. Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we

had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask. We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either. While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back

seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

Now, with double-digit returners back in the fold, the Indians have thoughts of making even a deeper playoff run in 2014. “It’s exciting,” Lemont coach Chris Traina said. “Getting to the sectional championship game and having a lot of younger players who are now returning this year, they know the system and they know how it felt to get there.” Any talk about this year’s

have other players who will step up this year too. They are working hard, and they are ready for the challenge ahead of them.” Also returning in the infield is second baseman Maddie Vermejan (.340 average, 42 runs scored last year) and corner infielder Anna Smagacz

(.400 average). The outfield appears loaded with Rachel Hall (.400 average, 22 RBIs), Brianna Olkiewicz (.304 average), Lisa Jaworski (.308 average) and Karina Folliard (.457 average) all back in the fold. One half of the battery is set with catcher Lauren May, who hit .413 with 37 RBIs as a sophomore. The only possible question mark for Lemont is within the pitching circle, though the team has plenty of options. Last year’s No. 1 pitcher Carly Jaworski is now at Lewis University. The trio of Lauren Young, Emily Durham and Jessica Spinelli all have varsity expe-

rience and will shoulder the load. Young was 7-1 last year in 33 2-3 innings while Durham was 3-0. “We are still kind of waiting to see who will step up and take that No. 1 spot,” Traina said. “Right now, all of them are throwing well.” The Indians will look to defend their conference title and also will be challenged by a tough non-conference schedule, which includes a matchup against two-time defending state champion Glenbard South, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last spring. “I’m really pleased with the determination they have now,” Traina said. “We just want to keep getting better.”

1. Lemont cheer takes home title No. 4 The Lemont cheerleading team captured the fourth state title in program history after posting a score of 90.84 at the IHSA medium division state finals. The Indians, who last finished first in 2011, have now brought home a trophy in nine consecutive years. The squad also had the top score of 88.22 in the prelims. Plans and Proposal forms may be obtained from the Project Engineer, FRANK NOVOTNY & ASSOCIATES, INC., 825 Midway Drive, Willowbrook, Illinois, 60527, (630) 887-8640, for a non-refundable fee of $100.00. Proposal forms are non-transferable. Only those Proposals that have been obtained from, and with the approval of, Frank Novotny & Associates will be accepted at the bid opening.

Only qualified Contractors who can furnish satisfactory proof that they have performed work of similar nature as Contractors will be entitled to receive Plans and submit Proposals. In order to meet this requirement, at the request of the Engineer, bidders will be required to submit a "Statement of Experience" consisting of a list of previous projects of similar nature in order to receive Plans. The Owner reserves the right to issue Bid Documents only to those Contractors deemed qualified.

All Proposals must be accompanied by a Bank Cashier's Check, Bank Draft, Certified Check, or Bid Bond for not less than five percent (5%) of the total amount of the Bid, or as provided in the applicable sections of the "Standard Specifications".

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The proposed work is officially known as Warner Avenue Water Main Replacement - Phase I: South of Weimer Avenue to Peiffer Avenue and consists of 8-inch water main in trench; pressure connections; hydrants; water service reconnections; pavement removal; hot-mix asphalt surfacing; and all appurtenant construction.

All work will be in conformance with the "Standard Specifications for Water and Sewer Main Construction in Illinois", dated 2014 and portions of the "Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction", dated January 1, 2012 and the "Standard Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements and Private Site Improvements" in the Village of Lemont, latest edition, as amended.

B. Plans and Proposal forms may be obtained from the Project Engineer, FRANK NOVOTNY & ASSOCIATES, INC., 825 Midway Drive, Willowbrook, Illinois, 60527, (630) 887-8640, for a non-refundable fee of $75.00.

C. Only qualified Contractors who can furnish satisfactory proof that they have performed work of similar nature as Contractors will be entitled to receive Plans and submit Proposals. In order to meet this requirement, at the request of the Engineer, bidders will be required to submit a "Statement of Experience" consisting of a list of previous projects of similar nature in order to receive Plans. The Owner reserves the right to issue Bid Documents only to those Contractors deemed qualified.

D. All Proposals must be accompanied by a Bank Cashier's Check, Bank Draft, Certified Check, or Bid Bond for not less than five percent (5%) of the total amount of the Bid, or as provided in the applicable sections of the "Standard Specifications".
