Village debates additions to La Dolce Vita outdoor seating By DAN FARNHAM
News to your phone
dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – La Dolce Vita owner Mickey Martin made his case to the Lemont Village Board for permanent enhancements to his outdoor dining area during the Monday board meeting. Martin said he would like to extend a deck under the canopy and put five dining tables outside. He also wants to add a plastic canvas that could cover the seating area so it would be available year-round. The renovations also would require adding a door for servers to use and installing heaters for the winter months. Martin said his restaurant has to turn customers away because of a lack of seating. He also thinks the patio seating will attract more customers who want to dine outside. The issue for the village is that the patio seating would extend into the village-owned sidewalk by about six feet. Lemont Village Administrator George Schafer said some businesses use village property

La Dolce Vita in Lemont wants to renovate its outdoor dining area to make it a permanent seating area. for seating but only on a temporary basis. The permit will last from April to November, after which the business is required to remove any fencing or furniture. La Dolce Vita’s proposed additions would be permanent, which would require a license for permanent use of village property. Schafer said the village has made such agreements with businesses before, but never for outdoor dining.
A majority of the board supported the additions, but a couple trustees did bring up concerns. Trustee Ron Stapleton said the permanent additions to the patio seating would obstruct the view of other businesses, which he said is not fair to them. He said he also took issue with instances when the restaurant has made renovations or additions to the building without consulting the village’s

building department. “I can’t vote yes on this thing,” he said. Trustee Debbie Blatzer was more concerned about the precedent of allowing a business to permanently use village property. She said if all the businesses did that, pedestrians would lose walking space on the sidewalk. Trustee Jeanette Virgilio said she sees the patio seating as more of a temporary means of expanding the restaurant’s business. “I know [Martin] would like to make additions to the back, but he needs more revenue to do that,” she said. Mayor Brian Reaves said he wants to be supportive of owners trying to invest more in their businesses. “Standing apart is what business people do to make money,” he said. “We’re fighting to become an entity and a destination. In my opinion, this [restaurant] is a destination.”
The board still needs to officially approve a licensing agreement with the restaurant to use village land, but Reaves said he hopes the restaurant will be able to move forward with its construction plans soon. In other discussion, the board gave its approval for the Chicago Blaze Rugby Club to expand its two-car door garage into a three-car door garage at 13011 Smith Road. The club had already presented a planned unit development to the board in June, but the garage was damaged in a storm and the club wishes to rebuild. The village planning department said the garage is nonconforming with the commercial zone it is in and requested the garage doors be built to face the fields on the property rather than Smith Road. Club representative Walter Rebenson said he was concerned having the doors face the field would require delivery trucks to drive on the grass. The village board said it did not have an issue with the garage doors facing Smith Road, as long as the structure was not designed or painted in a way that made it stand out.

The association is enlisting the people of Lemont to lead the tours. The groups will meet at 9:30 a.m. at St. James at Sag Bridge Church, the oldest active church building in northern Illinois. “St. James of the Sag is a very special church and cemetery in terms of canal history,” Koval said. Father Timothy Koys will lead the tour of the church, which he said was of spiritual significance to the workers who labored through rough conditions to build the canal. Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.
Former secretary ‘excited’ for LHS counseling role By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – As part of several staff changes in the Lemont High School student services department, there are two new counselors starting this year. One of them, Dana Browne, should already be a familiar face to many of the students. Browne has been working in the department for five years – first as a intern, then for a year as volunteer and for the last three years as secretary and registrar. With one counselor retiring and another, Denise Dalton, being promoted to department head to replace new principal Eric Michaelsen, Browne was able to fill one of the vacancies. Dalton said Browne went through the same application process as everyone else and earned the job with a good interview. Though this is her first counseling job at age 54, Browne said becoming a counselor has long been a goal. “It’s something I’ve always been interested in since I got out of high school, but I wasn’t able to pursue,” she said. Browne has been working part time as an administrative assistant at the College of DuPage’s Westmont Center for 23 years – a job she will continue in evenings even with her new position. She interned with Lemont High School while earning her master’s degree in school counseling. She said she fell in love with the school and the community. “I knew that when I started my internship here, I didn’t want to leave the school,” she said. With no positions being available the next year, she spent a year volunteering in the office. “I knew the counselling staff needed extra hands when-

ever they could get them,” she said. As the secretary and registrar the next three years, she was responsible admitting students and helping the counselors with their work. Dalton said the department knew they could rely on Browne to do more work even as a volunteer and secretary because of her experience. “It meant so much to us as a department because we had extra hands,” she said. “We also liked that she liked us.” She said Browne has already attended conferences representing the district and greeted college representatives at the school. Browne said she is excited about her knew position because she gets to work closer with the students. She said her previous position makes her familiar with all of the students and the culture of the school. Her new position has also been an adjustment for the students who knew her, she said. “They get very confused,” she said. “But, it’s been nice, because they pop their head in and say congratulations. It’s all been really great, really supportive.”

a.m., where visitors can go on tours of the downtown or the quarry areas. Lemont Historical Society president Susan Roy said society members Gail August, Susan Donahue and Doris Peterman will be leading the tours. She said the quarry tour will show where the limestone was mined and also take a closer look at the canal. The downtown tour will point out buildings in the Smokey Row area. She said that, in case of inclement weather, they also will offer a tour of the Lemont Historical Museum. Roy will host the tourgoers for lunch at the Inn at Smokey Row, with proceeds going to the historical society. The other towns on the tour are Lockport, Joliet, Wilmington, Morris, Seneca, Ottawa and LaSalle. The tour is being hosted in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. Koval said this is the first time the Canal Corridor Association has held a caravan tour like this, with people transporting themselves to the locations and spending as much
of the director of buildings and grounds and director of transportation. Superintendent Courtney Orzel said the district searched for a candidate qualified to run both departments with the understanding the additional support could be needed. She said that Crean has extensive background in buildings and grounds but has had to come up to speed on transportation. Hiring the part-time position would still be cheaper than if the district had hired separate directors for the departments, Orzel said.

Roy said she is excited the Canal Corridor Association is taking more interest in promoting Lemont as a canal town, including opening an office at the Metra station. “I feel that Lemont has a very charming and intriguing history,” she said. “I just wish more people came to enjoy and appreciate it.”

More than 25 years ago, I saw the need for early childhood programs Lemont. Starting as a part-time Lemont Park District employee, I moved forward in creating original and imaginative programs and classes specifically designed for COMMUNITY young children. A program VOICE category that had zero now Pam has more than 70 successful Carter and fun offerings. In 2009, I was extremely pleased to have secured a full-time position at the district heading up the preschool and early childhood programming. It is down my career path here in Lemont in which I have been able to develop the “Three C’s” … compassion, community and challenge. The compassion to give back, the love of the community and the challenge to help others whenever I am able. I realize that this may sound familiar as so many others also have developed the “Three C’s,” including the compassion to give back, but just need the right opportunity. It was along this thought process that lead me to research volunteer opportunism. After attending a workshop on the topic of volunteer initiatives at the Illinois Association of Parks and Recreation annual conference in 2012, I realized the need for a volunteer program in Lemont. I diligently worked on forming the “give” (Generous Individuals Giving Endlessly) Volunteer Project at the Lemont Park District. From writing a complete program manual to developing a substantial branding component in cooperation with the Marketing Department, the project has really taken off. The project launched in June of 2012, and more than 250 hours have already been logged. The district’s 2014 Fall Memory Maker program guide is full of opportunities to be a part of the project. Students, teens, families and service groups can step up and help at various programs and events this fall. If middle school students are interested in volunteering, all they need to do is complete a project orientation and they may help with BINGO and making ice cream sundaes at our Grandparents: a Child’s Best Friend event! Please join me at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 for a project informational and orientation meeting here at the Lemont Park District. Please RSVP to pam-carter@lemontparkdistrict.org. Thank you in advance for supporting “give” Volunteer Project at The Lemont Park District!

Good luck to all of our local students as they gear up for another school year! From studies to extracurricular activities to meeting new friends, we hope Lemont students embrace the challenges and make the most of it. It’s good see Lemont Village Board members show a willingness to accommodate a local business looking to expand, despite a complicated request. The owner of La Dolce Vita has asked the board for permission to expand his outdoor dining area into the village-owned sidewalk. At first, board members were hesitant to say yes. But eventually, the majority of board members expressed support, despite the potential issues.

Looting is for thugs What is happening in Ferguson, Mo., is no excuse for the looting and destroying of the businesses and city. Any excuse to loot, burn down the city is just a thug’s way and very shameful. I am a handicapped senior in Downers Grove and frequently use the Woodridge post office. This is another facility that does not have an automatic door. I walk with a cane and trying to juggle a cane, my purse and packages is a challenge when a post office does not have an automatic door. I think all places of business should be required to have automatic doors.
Stormwater questions In regards to Westmont’s stormwater retention problem, will everyone benefit from this endeavor? Having had problems with stormwater getting in the sanitary sewers, which backed up in my house, I am wondering if this would take care of that. Years ago, we had the sanitary people inspect the sewer in the alley and was told it was old, antiquated system made of bricks, but nothing was done about it. Would like to know.

Keep dogs in your yard No, it is not a fact of life that dogs must be walked, and you’re not irresponsible if you keep your dog in your own yard. That’s just more liberal democratic thinking that it’s OK that everybody wants dog pee and dog poop in their yard. If you’re going to own a dog, let it poop and pee in your own yard.
Save the coyotes I’m commenting on “No right to hurt coyotes.” I agree. We are a nation that needs a four-bedroom house when only two people are living in it. And because of that, we have taken away natural habitat for our native animals. They are only trying to survive. Stop leaving easy food available, and they’ll stay out of your area. Thank you.
Keep Metra stations open I hear Metra is considering raising ticket prices again. It’s a travesty how they have their train stations closed and doors locked from 1 o’clock in the afternoon forward. If vandalism is the excuse, that is no excuse. Hire someone, a rent-a-cop or something. Those stations need to stay open to keep their patrons safe from the elements.

DuPage County Clerk candidate Jean Kaczmarek brought a great idea to the DuPage County Board when they were renewing contracts for lobbyists. She said DuPage should mandate that reporting requirements for lobbyists be broadened and that this information should be placed online – the way it’s done in Cook County. Five years ago, the Cook County Board unanimously passed the Lobbyist Sunshine Initiative which mandates all lobbyists to report who they’re lobbying, what they’re lobbying, dates of contact, all compensation and any expenditures. All this information, including their photos, is posted on Lobbyists Online. Through a public portal, taxpayers, the media and elected officials can check out what lobbyists are doing. It’s been working great in Cook County. Why not here?

Despite the advent of the Affordable Care Act earlier this year, Will-Grundy Medical Clinic Executive Director Shawn West believes there’s still a need for a free care clinic in the area. Even with the Affordable Care Act, many fixed-income families will find premiums and out-of-pocket expenses unfordable, she said. “We are a safety net provider for health care,” West said. “We have some patients that are Medicaid eligible, but they’re waiting for their application to

OBITUARIES GEORGE L. ALWES

George L. Alwes, age 90, of Lemont and Downers Grove, at rest August 16, 2014, at Meadowbrook Manor in Naperville. Born June 11, 1924, in Bloomington, Illinois, to Oswald and Dorothy nee Schneider. George was a big band musician all his life, playing the sax until he retired three years ago. He worked in the millwork industry, Ft. Poly and Berwyn Lumber for many years. He was an avid White Sox fan and his happiest times were spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Beloved husband of Lorma nee Zielke; loving father of Gregory, Gary, Dawn, Laura, Lynn and Shelly; devoted grandfather of Jennifer, Scott, Norman, Joseph, Michael, Alex and Amanda; dearest great grandfather of 5; dear brother of Oswald Jr. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Pastor Michael Gudgel, officiating. through the clinic sometimes wait for months at a time for dental and medical care. That list will only grow if health care volunteers don’t step up, West said. The clinic remains entirely dependent on a strong volunteer base, she said, although the numbers have declined over the years. “We want to serve even more patients,” said West, who stepped into the new leadership role in December, replacing longtime executive director J.D. Ross. “The dental wait list is significant. People are waiting months to get in for dental.” That’s even with the decline in patient visits since open enrollment in the Affordable Care Act started earlier this year. The clinic saw about 570 patients – including those needing prescriptions – in July 2013. A year later, that number had dropped to 450. More patients could be served if more volunteers, including physicians, nurses and office staff, would give their time, West said. Founded in 1988, Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is the only free clinic in Will and Grundy counties for people without health insurance and limited financial resources. Individuals who want to become patients must meet eligibility requirements and must apply for patient status.

Nurse Jean Cleary takes down information July 31 while examining Cenorina Castro at the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic in Joliet. Cleary volunteers her services at the clinic. Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Silver Cross Hospital and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic serves patients who otherwise would “fall through the cracks,” said Janet Long, spokeswoman for Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. “Will-Grundy Medical Clinic helps fill the gap for those without coverage,” Long said. “We recognize the clinic for what they do for this community. The clinic is completely aligned with our own mission – that is to improve health of area residents. And they do that regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.” From December until July, the clinic experienced a decline in patients served, but unlike other free health care clinics nationwide that are closing their doors with the advent of the Affordable Care Act, Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is in it for the long haul, West said. The clinic’s success helps reduce emergency room visits
and readmissions to hospitals, according to Beth Hughes, president and CEO for Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Without a medical home, patients often use the ER for nonurgent primary care, which is the most costly way to care for a patient, Hughes said. “Regardless of health reform, we’re still seeing a great deal of patients who are underinsured or uninsured coming into the ER,” Hughes said. “The free clinic serves as a safety net. We want to serve far more patients at the clinic far more than we have historically. To do that, we need more people to volunteer.” The high rate of hospital readmissions also is a concern not only in Illinois but nationwide, Hughes said. Medicare has started penalizing hospitals for readmitting too many patients as part of a reduction program mandated by the Affordable Care Act. The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic is unique in that it can provide continued, consistent
Business manager Barbara Germany presented a three-year financing plan for the $71,584.98 purchase that would include $1,995.36 in interest payments. But the board decided that because the district had enough money in its budget to pay for the entire purchase while still maintaining a desired surplus, it would be better to pay the total amount this year.
The purchase is nine Lenovo desktop machines for nurses, secretaries and learning resource center assistants; 11 Lenovo Yoga laptops for principals, secretaries and tech assistants; and 155 Google Chromebooks for Oakwood School students.
3. Something spooky coming to Central School The board announced the
care for patients with a high risk for readmittance, she said. “If a patient doesn’t have a home and no one watching their medical condition after discharge, they have a higher likelihood of returning back to the hospital within that 30day window, but if we’re able to properly discharge a patient to the clinic, we reduce the chances of readmissions greatly,” West said
New programs This year, clinic officials are focusing on new programs, including Zumba fitness classes, nutrition counseling and healthy cooking classes, said Kim Kalafut, director of development at the clinic. Award-winning chef Peggy Gerdes, from the Autobahn Country Club, offered a cooking demonstration last month at the clinic. “She showed people healthy alternatives to traditional recipes,” Kalafut said. “That’s the kind of things we want to bring to patients on a monthly basis. We want people to learn how to cook with more healthy ingredients.” These are services not typically offered through expanded Medicaid programs but would be free to patients at the clinic, she said. The University of Illinois Extension is offering its services to the clinic by providing training to volunteer nurses on nutrition counseling, too, West said. “That’s the direction health care is going in,” West said. “Prevention really is key. If you want to impact someone’s life, help them develop good eating and exercise habits. district will host a haunted house event Oct. 24 and 25 at the closed Central School. Standard Market Grill a pleasant, uncommon find WESTMONT – We’ve always been told it’s a bad idea to go grocery shopping when hungry, but at Standard Market, that’s precisely the right time. Tucked away inside the upscale grocery store sits the Standard Market Grill, offering its customers a casual yet delicious dining experience. The spacious room’s sophisticated decor provides a dramatic setting for the madefresh-to-order cuisine. The dishes are sourced from the gourmet market’s fresh produce, seafood, in-house-aged meats, craft beer and wine. Cocktails also are served. And overseeing the menu is the same chef’s team behind the market’s sister enterprise, the elegant Bakersfield restaurant across the street. At the Standard Market Grill walk-up counter, guests are greeted by two cashiers. After ordering your dish of choice, you have the option to sit wherever you please. Open daily, the restaurant offers seating at large booths and high-top tables, along with an outdoor patio – my favorite. The patio, where my companion and I chose to dine, is staged with large wooden tables, matching chairs and umbrellas fitted with heating lamps. It set the perfect summer night mood for a tasty meal, and before we knew it, a waiter sporting a red polo was placing two large plates on our table. Although Standard Market Grill offers a variety of soups, dinner entrees (N.Y. strip steak and Duroc pork chop), fresh-ground burgers, pizzas and salads (seared tuna Cobb), it was the sandwich selection that caught both my and my

Served on a soft baguette, the steak was complemented by blue cheese, buttermilk garlic dressing, mushrooms, balsamic caramelized onions and arugula. My fellow diner went with the Cuban Chicken sandwich and delighted at the fact that it looked exactly as he had pictured. His sandwich paired grilled chicken with Swiss cheese, chipotle aioli, smoked tavern ham, and sweet and spicy pickles, all piled on a freshly baked, soft baguette. The moment our plates arrived, we dug in and didn’t stop until the final crumb was devoured. With full bellies, we both thought we’d had enough, until we saw the grill’s Root Beer Float, a classic American treat. Delivering a perfect serving size of vanilla ice cream and Chicago-style root

One of my favorite parts of Standard Market Grill was the fact that when we ventured into the grocery store after eating ravenously, our shopping list didn’t grow by eight additional items. We were already full and content.

Lemont’s Katie Atherton chips from the edge of the green Monday during practice. Atherton is one of four seniors returning to the varsity team this season.
Returning quartet bolsters Lemont’s girls golf team By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com As the girls golf season gets underway, teams have their sights set on the same destination – downstate Decatur for the Class A and AA state tournaments Oct. 17 and 18. Lemont lost a state tournament qualifier but still has plenty of talent in place to compete at a high level this season.

Outlook: The Indians are coming off a strong 2013 campaign which saw the team go 10-2 in
dual meets before qualifying for a Class AA sectional after placing third in the regional tournament they hosted. Lemont returns four of their top six from that group as seniors Laura Ringo, Stephanie Eby, Katie Atherton and Jacque Desmond all are back with varsity. The squad did lose No. 1 golfer and state qualifier Bridget Lynn to graduation but still has plenty of talent in the fold. “We also have three juniors who will be competing for varsity positions,” Lemont coach Bill Mondrella said. “Our strength
is that we have seven girls who could possibly contribute on any given day. I am excited to see who steps up and shows the most improvement through the year. We look to compete for a top three spot at regional.”

Outlook: The Redwings appear to be on the upswing this season with a roster full of returning varsity players. Isabella Abdullah and Gretchen Schramko were sectional qualifiers in 2013, and Abdullah went on to place 40th at the state tournament. Annie Arnold, Abby Bitto, Maggie Durkin, Georgia Prock and Emma Schramko were varsity members last fall. The steady veteran presence should help Benet as it looks to improve on a 9-9 dual meet record in 2013.

The state championship celebration for Lemont’s baseball team continued Sunday as players and coaches from the team were recognized for their accomplishment before the Chicago White Sox game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The team went 35-5 and won the Class 3A title this spring, the first state title for the program. The win in the championship game came in memorable fashion as the Indians rallied for a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 victory against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin.
Lemont boys golfers aim to extend conference title streak By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com The boys golf season has already teed off, and teams are hoping to make the trek to Bloomington and Normal for the Class 1A, 2A and 3A state tournaments Oct. 17 and 18. Lemont has a bit of a new look with several new varsity players, but the early season results for the Indians have been promising.

Lemont also won its eighth straight conference title in 2013. On Tuesday, the Indians defeated Evergreen Park 157-166 in a dual meet. Matt Retzke was a co-medalist with a 37, Charlie Cannon shot a 39 and Joe Pavlovic finished with a 40.
Outlook: Hosting a Class 3A regional a year ago, the Indians just missed out on qualifying for the sectional as a team. Lemont carded a score of 312 to finish in fourthplace, just four strokes behind Lockport. The squad did advance three individuals to the sectional tournament, two of Benet Redwings whom (Ben Groselak and Joe Coach: Marty Gaughan

Outlook: Former Redwings basketball coach Marty Gaughan takes over the coaching duties from Dan Nagis, who retired after 33 years at the helm, which included a fifth place team finish last fall. Gaughan inherits a team
that returns three players from the state team. Junior Alex Bassetto carded a 154 over 36 holes at the Class 3A state tournament last year, while seniors George Carroll (163) and Ben Johnson (167) also were part of the state team. Benet, which won four invites and ESCC and regional championship last season, will be looking for more of the same against a tough schedule that includes Naperville North, Waubonsie Valley and the Hinsdale Central Red Devil Invite.

LISLE – After making a name for himself while playing for his dad at Creighton, Doug McDermott was traded to the Chicago Bulls on draft night after being selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 11th overall pick. McDermott recently completed his first summer league with the Bulls and spent some time with the USA Select Team along with Bulls teammate Jimmy Butler. McDermott visited the Bulls/ Sox Academy on Aug. 13 for a Chicago Bulls All-Day Player Camp, where he signed autographs for young fans and spoke with members of the media, including Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita.
How good was it to see him practicing and playing? McDermott: It’s been great. We knew it was coming the whole time because we saw it leading up to summer league, so it wasn’t a big surprise to us when he was out there playing well for USA. It’s great to see and great for us as teammates to see that. Is everything going how you expected for you this summer? McDermott: I always expect to do well. I put in a lot of work. As long as I keep doing that I expect good things to happen. I’m sure there will be some bumps here and there, but that’s just the way basketball is. I’m just looking forward to
LMR
What was your experience like with the Select Team and getting a chance to be around [Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau]? McDermott: It was really cool just to get a chance to be around them. Obviously I can learn a lot from them, and I’m going to have a chance to do that coming up here pretty soon. How was Derrick Rose doing? McDermott: He was real focused. He wanted to get out there and show what he can do, and he did. He was really good to meet beforehand.

Chicago Bulls rookie jumps into NBA routine
Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com
Chicago Bulls rookie Doug McDermott gives some shooting tips to a camper Aug. 13 at the Bulls/Sox Academy Chicago Bulls All-Day Player Camp in Lisle. The rookie was a special guest at the camp. contributing to a really good team. Was is hard to hear your name in trade rumors? McDermott: I didn’t follow it too much. I looked at it as I’m an NBA player either way so you can’t complain. I’m just glad I’m here. I feel that they really like me here. I feel like I’m wanted and I want to help out this team. Has playing with the Select Team the past two years helped you? McDermott: It really has. They’ve given me so much more confidence, just being able to play against the best players in the world going into a college season and my first NBA season. There’s not any better way to drive yourself than going against the best players in the world.
Doug McDermott key stats ! 26.7 Points per game ! 7.0 Rebounds per game ! 52.6 Field goal percentage ! 96 3-pointers made
McDermott: It’s great. It’s just awesome being around the kids and the fans. It shows what kind of support the city has to offer. It’s great helping out and giving kids advice because I was in their shoes one day and they’re all hoping to get into mine.
*For 2013-14 season at Creighton
What have you been working on most in your game this summer? McDermott: Ball handling, working on my range and, with coach Thibodeau, defense. He preaches defense, so that’s something I got to get better at and that’s something I’m looking forward to working with him. How much do you enjoy events like [the camp] that help you learn a little bit more about your community?
Who did you follow growing up? McDermott: I liked the Bulls a lot. I hate to admit it, but I was a huge Reggie Miller Pacers fan, but I liked the Bulls. I’m a Midwest kid and you dream of playing for Chicago, especially watching MJ (Michael Jordan). What’s been the biggest adjustment of becoming a pro basketball player? McDermott: Just the lifestyle, the routines. Being able to manage your time well. You’re not scheduled to do
stuff. You have to show up on your own and get it done. Have you had a chance to step away off the basketball court? McDermott: A little bit. Not a lot, though. I plan on doing that here in two weeks or so and take a little time off before getting ready for training camp and try to hit the golf course a little bit. Has Thibodeau told you how he’s going to use you? McDermott: I haven’t talked to him a whole lot about that. I think we’re still learning each other. I think we’re both comfortable with each other, which is good. I think me and Kyle Korver, the way they used him a little bit. I’m starting to watch film on him. I’m trying to pick up on things they ran for him and other shooters in the past.

COOK COUNTY REAL PROPERTY ASSESSMENTS FOR 2014
ACORN
This publication constitutes official notice of the changes in assessment to all owners of real property in Lemont Township. The 2014 assessment changes as published herein are those determined by the Assessor of Cook County. It is the duty of the Assessor to appraise all taxable real property in Cook County at its fair cash value as of January 1, 2014. Fair cash value is described as what the property would bring at a voluntary sale in the normal course of business or trade. The Assessor is required by l aw to assess said property in a fair and just manner. The Assessor does not determine property taxes. Property taxes are determined by the spending needs and requests of municipalities, school boards, park districts and other local government agencies which provide public services to property owners. The Assessor’s sole responsibility is to estimate the value of real estate property. In Cook County, real property is classified according to its use. The classification system is used to determine the percentage of the fair cash value at which the real property is assessed for purposes of taxation. Accordingly, real property is assessed at only a fraction of its fair cash value, depending on its use and classification.
Cook County uses a Permanent Index Number (P.I.N) system as a means to identify individual real estate parcels. The PIN consists of a 14-digit number. The first two digits identify the area or survey township; the second two digits identify the sub-area or section; the next three digits identify blocks. Note: Blocks are defined as follows: Blocks 100 to 199 are located in the N.W. Quarter Blocks 200 to 299 are located in the N.E. Quarter Blocks 300 to 399 are located in the S.W. Quarter Blocks 400 to 499 are located in the S.E. Quarter The next three digits in the series identify the specific parcel or lot. The last four, (where applicable), identify individual condominium units, nonoperating railroad parcels or leasehold’s of exempt parcels. Whenever possible, the assessment list will be listed by the street name and the street or house number of the parcel. However, the Cook County Assessor’s Office official records rely on permanent Property Index Numbers (P.I.N.) only. No assessment of real property shall be considered invalid due to an incorrect listing. If you have any questions regarding the assessment of real property you should visit the Office of the Assessor of Cook County, 118 N. Clark Street, Room 301, Chicago, Illinois 60602, or call (312) 443-7550.
