April 22, 2022 Mr. Steve Solorio DePue Men’s Club DePue, IL 61322 Steve, Congratulations to the DePue Men’s Club on hosting the 2022 Lake DePue National Championship boat races. This year’s event will be the largest championship in the history of outboard racing. National Champions will be crowned in three divisions: Pros, Modifieds, and Juniors. Our community is proud of the hard work that the DePue Men’s Club has invested over the years in this great tradition. Your planning, preparation and participation show what a small community like ours can do! There are so many people involved whose hard work makes this event possible. Thank you everyone for all that you do and have done in the past for our community. I would like to give a special thanks to the “voice” of racing, Ray Rodda. Ray’s is the voice we hear every year over the roar of the engines. His “Holy Buckets” call has made this event even more exciting. Ray’s career will be ending soon, and I know we will miss him very much. Ray is a great friend. I cannot express the gratitude we have for all his calls and hard work over the last 38 years. If you get a chance, please thank him for everything he has done for us. Thank you, Ray! I also would like to remind everyone of the continuing hard work that we are all doing to “Save Lake DePue.” We continue in our effort to bring this natural treasure back to its original condition. Our DePue Citizen’s Advisory Group and DePue DAC continue to lead this effort. Nancy Loeb, Jim Stowe, Eric Bryant, Mark Bryant and Tom Dobrich are on the forefront of this fight. We also need your help. Take time to voice your opinion and concerns with our congressmen and state officials to let them know we need their help in saving Lake DePue. As always, we remain “DePue Strong.” Our community is diverse and proud of its heritage. Thanks to everyone involved in Lake DePue restoration effort; now let’s get this done! Sincerely,

Daniel J. Hoffert Village President

TIM SMALL

April 16, 1956 — November 13, 2019 By Tom Small

T

im Small was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1956. In 1957, our family moved to Lighthouse Point, Florida. Tim resided there until early 2019. He then moved to Vero Beach, Florida, until his passing in November of that year. Tim was a self-employed commercial artist/sign painter. He worked as such around Florida from 1978 until mid-2019. Tim started boat racing in 1968 at the age of 12. Tim and I were the sons of Tom Small, Sr., an outboard racer from Milwaukee who raced from the mid-1940s to the mid1970s. Our father was a two-time National Champion in the early 1950s in the 500cc runabout class. He introduced Tim and I to racing in the mid-1960s.

Tim Small was an avid boat racer, kart racer and roller/inline skater.

raced in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1975 and Brussels, Belgium, in 1983. He was inducted into the Roller-Skating Hall of Fame in 1988.

Tim became involved in go kart racing after retiring from boat racing. He always had an interest in karting, even during his childhood. He got his first 100cc kart in 1983 and race until 1998. He raced in different parts of the country over the years, alTim started in the ways running 100cc motors A stock runabout class in many different classes. and my dad if they would like to go to DePue with me. They both agreed to go. To make a long story short, Tim got an itch to start racing again after going to DePue. From 2001 until our last Nationals in DePue in 2019, Tim and I hardly ever missed a USTS race. Tim drove the boats and I was his pit crew. Tim won many USTS season races and many USTS National Championships in different classes of runabouts — 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc. He also won two World Championships, one in the UIM 175 hydro class and one in the 500cc runabout class — the same class our father raced in the 1950s and 1960s. During his years of USTS racing, Tim met Sue, the love of his life, in 2005. They were married in 2015. Sue was a great supporter of Tim and his racing throughout the years. She was with him at every race. In closing, I want to say that Tim Small loved boat racing, but most of all he loved his boat racing family. He would constantly tell me in the latter part of his life that it wasn’t just the racing part he enjoyed; his favorite part of the sport was socializing with his boat racing friends. Tim is gone, but not forgotten in many different sports and in the friendships he developed while participating in those sports. He will surely be missed. Rest in peace, Tim.

BILL KURPS

September 1, 1944 – July 24, 2020 By Brad Barth, with Joyce Kurps

B

ill Kurps was always interested in understanding how things worked, and even more so on how to make them better and, if possible, simpler. Bill was a mechanical design engineer for companies that built one-ofa-kind automated assembly machines. He grew up around his uncle’s gas station, which included a repair shop. Bill’s dad worked at the station as a mechanic. He was a man of few words. He often said, “You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn if you just shut up.” As a teenager, Bill religiously read Popular Mechanics magazine. He was particularly interested in articles that gave step-by-step instructions on how to build things. One of the projects he tackled was a hydroplane built out of plywood on a wood frame. The hydroplane was about seven or eight feet long. Bill took his finished project to a lake to see if it would float … and it did. That was the start of “Wild” Bill’s fascination with boat racing.

Bill Kurps was part of the boat racing scene for nearly 50 years.

boat suffered engine failure. Bill said he became an expert in breaking down and rebuilding his engine that year. Bill became an advocate for outboard racing by displaying his boats and trailer at the 1968 Chicago Boat Show. That year he bought a Konig engine and built his second boat — the Kurps Special II — in his in-law’s basement. Fast forward a couple of years — this boat would eventually become Rod Walk’s first boat, which was jokingly named “The Barge” in reference to its weight. Rod bought a new boat a couple years later, but kept The Barge. As it turned out, The Barge was the boat I drove in my first few races.

Bill would continue to build boats THE EARLY YEARS throughout his career, but in the late Bill and Joyce were married in 1980s he bought three boats from 1964. Joyce recalled that Bill conGary Pugh: a 250cc, 350cc and 500cc. nected with and Clyde and Charlotte The last boat he built was the capsule Queen, W. Dean Wilson and other boat he drove until retiring from racmembers of the Outboard Club of ing in 2006. Chicago (OCC). In 1965, he made his first trip to DePue to help in the pits THE MIDDLE YEARS and watch the races. While he was Bill quit racing for a few years in there, someone arranged the early 1980s. It was for him to take a boat out around this time that I for a ride. And, from that moved to the Chicago moment, he was hooked. area and bought a trailer Bill started racing the with an empty top rack. So, I first few years of racing. would drive to Wheeling, In each of the five races get his boat and motor he entered in 1966, his packed up and then we Bill Kurps

were off to the races. Around 1984 or 1985, Bill built a boat for his kids, Bob and Bill Jr., to run in the novice class. With the additional boats, Bill rebuilt and enclosed his trailer. We teamed up until I quit racing for a few years after the 1988 season. Another tidbit: in the late 1980s or maybe early 1990s, Bill wrote the US Title Series newsletter just before Harry O’Brien took the reins. It was during this time that Bill coined the phrase “Speed Week” for the back-toback weekend races at Constantine, Michigan, and the Nationals in DePue. Oddly enough, Bill and I probably had our best single year racing during the 1988 season. Bill bought a new 500cc Konig that year and was anxious to get a start in the 1989 season. Bill and Joyce put the 350 boat on the top of their van, packed up the 350cc and 500cc engines, and left for Lakeland, Florida. Bill put the 500cc on the 350 boat and headed out of the pits. After the broad right turn onto the back straight and pulling the pipe, the boat took flight, sending Bill somersaulting through the air. The resulting injury snapped a nerve that ran from his spine to his right arm, leaving it paralyzed. Hindsight is 20/20. This put Bill out of racing for a few years, but it also was the beginning of the transition of 500 hydro from open cockpit

DON NICHOLS

I

t is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Donald E. Nichols, 85, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Don leaves behind his wife, Emma Lou, and daughter, Donna, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don was a boat racer in the 500cc Hydroplane and 700cc Hydroplane classes. Don built a 500cc Yamaha from scratch and ran it on his kneeldown Yale Hydroplane L-81. Don was committed to boat racing and was one of the founders of the U.S. Title Series in 1983. He sat of the board of the U.S. Title Series for many years with Emma Lou by his side as a volunteer on the Judge’s stand. After quitting racing, Don became the U.S. Title Series referee, which included all the races as well as the Nationals in DePue. After retiring from his referee position, Don continued to perform engine work for many of the boat

to capsule. In the early 1990s, Bill built a capsule boat; by 1995, it was ready to run. Running his 700cc Konig, Bill won the USTS Highpoint Championship in this Special Event Class for three years running, from 2000 to 2002. Rossi engines were beginning to dominate the 250 and 350 classes in the early 2000s, and Tom Brinkman was running a 500cc Rossi on his runabout. It was fast and had incredible acceleration. In 2003, Bill bought a 500cc Rossi to run on his capsule boat. The next year, 2004, was a learning year. In 2005, Bill relocated with his job to Seneca, South Carolina. He made a couple of races after the move, but ultimately this ended his racing days. Bill served as the US Title Series Treasurer for a few years. In 2011, Bill followed up on a project he had been thinking about for years — he took one

racers. He was always there to help everyone out. Don continued to attend races with Emma Lou in their motorhome. Don was instrumental in procuring boat races for the U.S. Title Series in Alexandria, Louisiana, and in Lake Village, Arkansas. Please remember Emma Lou, Donna and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in your thoughts. Don, we will see you in the first turn!

The engine ran, but we never put the time into it to see if it would run right. I keep the engine in my basement and consider it a piece of art. Harry Pasturzak did a lot of engine work for Bill. Harry wrote notes on everything he did so Bill could learn

about the engines and how they worked. Bill saved many of those notes and took that method of education to heart. Bill would work on my engines and, particularly after he and Joyce moved to South Carolina, he would return engine parts with notes, detailed drawings and explanations of what he did and why. I saved many of those notes. Finally, after retiring from his job in 2011, Bill became the USTS referee, a position he held through the 2019 season. Disclaimer: As many times as Bill told me the story on how he got started in boat racing, putting it on paper in a historically correct manner was more difficult that I expected. I exchanged phones calls and texts with Joyce to try and make his race biography as accurate as our collective memories allowed. Bill was a great friend. Bill, Joyce, Bill Jr. and Bob (and eventually Bill’s granddaughter, Kourtney) are like family to me, Kathi, Erin and Ryan.

SCORE SHEET 2022 PRO NATIONALS For the PRO National Championships, the drivers run three heats in each class. Drivers receive points for each heat. When the heats are finished, the points are totaled to determine the winner. The drivers are ranked according to their total and are then given a final position based on this figure. The points that they actually receive are then doubled. Points are scored through the 20th position. In the case of ties, time is the deciding factor. THE APBA/U.S. TITLE SERIES PRO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

U.S. TITLE SERIES 2022 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

RACE FANS: WELCOME TO THE PRO NATIONALS IN DEPUE, ILLINOIS!

PRESIDENT-Pete Nydahl, Bristol, WI VICE-PRESIDENT-Rich Krier, Indianola, IA TREASURER-David Tenney, Greenwich, CT BOARD MEMBERS: Mike Thirlby, Traverse City, MI; Paul Bosnich, DePue, IL; Derek Gesler, Jordan, MN

On behalf of U.S. Title Series, I would like to welcome you all to the 2022 DePue National Championships. This year we are doing something very special. Not only are the USTS and APBA PRO category combining to crown their National Champions, but the APBA Modified Outboard and Junior Outboard National Champions will also be determined during this spectacular week-long event. The Junior category brings four classes to the schedule: J Hydro, J Runabout, AXS Hydro and AXS Runabout. With a minimum age of nine and running stock 15hp outboards, the Junior category is a great place for young drivers to start their racing careers. In fact, many of today’s top racers in all categories got their start in the Junior classes. The Modified Outboard category will compete in sixteen highly competitive championship classes. The Modified Outboard category runs modified stock outboards. The smallest engine is 15hp and the larger engines are 85+hp. The PRO category runs engines that are made specifically for racing. They are methanol burning engines with displacements from 125cc up to 1100cc (45hp to 195hp). The category also runs four Antique classes (the forerunners of outboard racing) and the K-Pro kids classes. Your favorite announcer Ray Rodda will be back on the microphone with assistance from John Ruff and Kay Brewer. Both John and Kay bring years of experience in announcing outboard racing and are sure to enhance the show. I would like to thank the DePue Men’s Club and the Village of DePue for joining with us in this endeavor as we aim to put on a spectacular event. The US Title Series is excited to share the DePue experience with our friends at what many of our racers consider to be their favorite race site. And I thank you, the fans, because you are what makes it so special to us all. Sincerely, Pete Nydahl USTS President

A PRIMER ON APBA PROFESSIONAL RACING OUTBOARD BOAT CATEGORIES AND CLASSES

P

rofessional Racing Outboard (PRO) is the American Power Boat Association’s most diverse and electrifying category. With 19 classes, PRO boats speeds range from moderate to blazing fast, from old tech to cutting-edge tech. Engines in the PRO category can run at upwards of 13,000 rpm (compared to a typical stock race car that runs at 7,000 rpm). PRO Boats are roughly 9 to 14 feet long and weigh 100 to 250 pounds. Most are made of wood, but carbon fiber, honeycomb and other high-tech materials also are used. Most drivers kneel in the cockpit. Some boats are driven in a lay-down position, while others have the driver seated. Typically, the left hand works the spring-loaded throttle, and the right hand handles the steering wheel. The boats are of two distinct designs

— hydros and runabouts. Hydros ride on a cushion of air. The boat contacts the water’s surface on two sponsons (projections) and the propeller. The design is generally unrestricted, challenging those who wish to experiment in boat design and construction. Runabouts have certain restrictions, such as minimum lengths. While there is great variety in runabout design, generally they have a flat riding surface, tapered to a point in front, and do not channel air under the hull. Although typically slower than hydros, the thrill of racing runabouts is unmatched. Just watch a runabout round a buoy and you’ll see the difference! Thirteen of the PRO classes are based primarily on motor displacement. They are sometimes referred to as “bore and stroke” classes. The maximum displacements of bore and stroke classes are 125cc (128.75cc), 175cc, 250cc (257.5cc),

350cc, 500cc, 700cc, and 1100cc (1133cc). There are no minimum weights in these classes, and in the hydro classes, there are few restrictions on hulls. The three largest hydro classes — 500ccH, 700ccH, and 1100ccH — must utilize a reinforced cockpit (capsule) with a five-point harness and the driver seated. The 125cc classes must use one-cylinder motors. The 1100cc Runabout must carry two people, a driver and a deck rider. Most bore and stroke classes utilize a fuel based on methanol and oil. The K PRO Hydro class is a class for kids only. The OSY400 class is the USA version of the largest UIM powerboat racing class in the world. K PRO Hydro and OSY400 are restricted to gasoline and oil fuel. The C Service and C Racing classes are based on American-built fishing CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

U.S. TITLE SERIES The US Title Series, founded in 1982, is recognized as the premier PRO outboard racing series in the United States. There are eleven classes in the U.S. Title Series based on the type of boat and the size of the engines. Engines are specifically designed for racing, burn methanol fuel, and are manufactured all over the world. A separate race is run for each class consisting of three heats per class and four laps per heat. There are three distinctive types of boats in the U.S. Title Series: Runabouts, Hydroplanes and Capsules. MODIFIED OUTBOARDS In Modified Outboard, the engine builder’s skill is just as important as the driver’s. These boats are easily recognizable by specially tuned pipes that make

Junior Hydroplanes and Runabouts (40 mph) are open to all kids ages 9-16.

them as loud as they are fast. Because engines are constantly being modified to make the absolute most of what the rules allow, the competition is always fierce. Whether hydroplane or runabout, modified classes are defined by the size of their engines (displacement). The numbers in the class names define the approximate engine size in cubic centimeters. For example, the 250ccMH, or 250 cubic centimeter Mod Hydro, is smaller than the 850ccMH, or 850 cubic centimeter Mod Hydro.

The 1100cc Runabout carries two people, a driver and a deck rider.

Some classes have minimum weights, which increase with engine size. The smaller classes are often a good fit for younger, lighter drivers (14-year-olds may drive 200-250cc Mod classes, for example). The larger classes take considerable skill and experience. Propellers of four blades or less are used, and prop choice can affect speed enormously.

JUNIOR CLASSES Junior Hydroplanes and Runabouts (40 mph) are open to all kids ages 9-16. AX Hydroplanes and Runabouts (50 mph) are open to ages 12 and up.

ABOUT SAFETY

Many people need a safe way to satisfy their normal desire for competitive speed PRO boat racing under U.S. Title Series rules and regulations. Rigid safety rules are established and enforced. Any driver breaking the rules can be beached for varying lengths of time depending upon the severity of the infraction. Boats, motors, helmets, life jackets, etc.

are inspected regularly and must be kept up to current Safety Advisory Committee specifications. Hard and fast safe driving rules are rigidly enforced anytime a U.S. Title Series registered racing boat is put on the water, even for testing. Boat racing also has contributed much to improve safety conditions for the pleasure-boating public.
