Golf has seen an upswing in the number of people interested in getting started with the game.
Open seve days a wee n k!
Millions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this difficult sport. In its “U.S. Golf Economy Report,” released in 2018, WE ARE GOLF, a coalition of golf’s governing bodies, found there was a 20 percent increase in junior golf participation in the five years between 2011 and 2016. Plus, there were 2.5 million golfers who played for the first time in 2016, up from 1.5 million in 2011. Even more exciting for the industry is non-golfers interested in playing golf doubled to 12.8 million. There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow. In fact, the experts at Golf Digest say that some people can be scared off even before they hit the green. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about and ultimately embracing the game of golf. Here are six ways to get started. 1. Start off on a practice range and not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game and practice your swings. 2. Hook up with someone who can show you the ropes. Going it alone can tame feelings of embarrassment from being new to the game.
However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some golfing experience. 3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing. 4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees, offers Golf Digest. This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce sidespin so shots fly more straight. 5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots. 6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing. With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly. Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club
O
ak Ridge Golf Club, east of LaSalle on U.S. 6 has a great championship golf course. Established in 1994, the course has bent grass tees, greens and fairways, which are an area favorite. From the back tees, the golf course measures just over 6,800 yards. Four sets of tees are offered to accommodate any skill level. Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club sprawls across gently rolling terrain that was used to guide the design. The resulting layout blends in almost seamlessly with the natural landscape. The golf course is routed through forests of mature oak trees and around five sparkling lakes. The back nine plays along a meandering creek. Water hazards come into play on a total of 13 holes and there are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout. The golf course demands a fair amount of accuracy but it’s not overly punishing if you’re errant. The final hole plays from an elevated tee, requiring a carry over the creek in order to reach the green. Every golfer knows practice makes perfection. We offer the facilities you need to keep your game in top shape. Come hit a bucket of balls at our driving range and work on that slice or break those old habits. Find yourself needed sunscreen because you frequent the beach while on the links. Learn how to dig yourself out using our practice bunker on one of our two practice greens. Our practice greens are perfect for working on all of your short game needs. Oak Ridge Golf Club is owned by the Senica family; two sisters and three brothers. Their father, the late Ron Senica was instrumental in the creation and growth of the club. In May 2006, the Senica family decided to expand from their original building into a 17,000 square foot clubhouse. Inside the facility is a fully stocked pro shop with a wide variety of golf balls, shirts, hats, clubs, gloves, towels and more. Also in the clubhouse is a dining area unlike any other in the area. Besides a great menu, a 30 foot tall stone fireplace and a scenic view of a picturesque lake enhance the ambiance. The menu features everything from sandwiches to prime cut steaks. The last part of the clubhouse is a 10,000 square foot banquet center that can host parties, weddings or company functions up to 300 guests. For information please contact Event Coordinator, Amy Simone 815-223-7273. The club is open seven days a week for golf and lunch. Dinner is served Friday and Saturday nights, and also Wednesdays for Men’s Night. For information about memberships, lessons, or tee times, call Director of Golf, Culie Hawthorne at (815)223-7273.

Golf terms for young beginners to learn G
olf is a popular sport played by millions of people across the globe. Many of those people are children, who can learn a host of life lessons from participating in this challenging yet rewarding sport. Team sports might be the first thing to come to mind when thinking of youth sports, but data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association indicates that participation in individual sports and team sports is pretty close. According to the Aspen Institute’s “State of Play: 2018” report, which was compiled using custom data provided by the SFIA, 56.5 percent of children between the ages of six and 12 participated in a team sport in 2017. That same year, 49.3 percent of children in that same age group participated in an individual sport like golf or tennis. Children can benefit from participating in both team and individual sports, and the youth development organization The First Tee® notes that golf can instill life-enhancing values in youngsters while helping them build character. Golf is a difficult game to master and can be especially tough on beginners. Learning some of these commonly used golf terms is a great way for young athletes to begin familiarizing themselves with the game. • PAR: The Professional Golfers’ Association defines par as the score an accomplished player is expected to make on a hole. Par is either a three, four or five. Parents and coaches of young golfers should not overlook the words “accomplished golfers” in the PGA’s definition of par. Young players need not worry about par as they learn the game, as it’s often hard for even seasoned golfers to make par. • TEE BOX: This is the area where players start a game of golf. There are 18 holes on a golf course, and each hole has its own tee box. • FAIRWAY: A long stretch of neatly maintained grass that is located between the tee box and the green. • ROUGH: The area of tall grass that surrounds the fairway. • BUNKER: Sometimes referred to as a “sand trap,” a bunker is a pit-like area containing sand. Golfers typically want to avoid hitting balls into a bunker. Holes may have more than one bunker. • GREEN: The area at the end of a fairway where the hole is located. Grass on the green is typically smooth and cut considerably lower than grass on other areas of the course. • FORE!: This is a warning golfers shout when they strike the ball and notice it is heading toward another person on the course. • DRIVE: A drive is a golfer’s first shot on a hole. A drive is taken from the tee box. • APPROACH: An approach is a shot hit towards the green from the fairway. • PUTT: A shot taken, typically gently, while on the green as golfers try to get the ball in the hole. Golf is a great sport for people of all ages. Parents who think their children might benefit from participating in golf can explore the various opportunities available to kids at www.thefirsttee.org. How to get kids into W
hen a global pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization in March 2020, parents were left scrambling for fun and healthy ways to keep their kids occupied. Virtual learning sessions replaced days spent in the classroom, and many extracurricular activities were canceled in an attempt to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Parents tried to find activities that kids could enjoy while still adhering to social distancing guidelines, and that led many moms and dads to consider golf. Golf is an outdoor activity that does not require a large group of people, making it an ideal recreational activity during the era of social distancing. In fact, the number of youth golfers skyrocketed during the first six months of pandemic. According to Youth on Course, a nationwide program for children between the ages of six and 18 that offers access to more than 1,000 golf courses for a nominal fee, the number of rounds played by program members between January 2020 and July 2020 increased by 76 percent over the same period a year earlier. Golf isn’t just beneficial during the age of social distancing. It’s also a great way for parents to get kids to exercise and keep them off of their devices as they enjoy the great outdoors. Golf is a difficult game, and that difficulty may discourage some youngsters from playing. However, parents can overcome that hurdle and others as they try get their kids excited about playing golf. • ENROLL KIDS IN A YOUTH ORGANIZATION. An organization like Youth on Course excites many youngsters because they see children their own age playing golf. That means they can go golfing with friends and talk
about the game when they’re not on the course. Parents concerned about COVID-19 can let their youngsters play with friends while wearing a mask without risking kids’ health. Public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have noted that outdoor activities are significantly safer than indoor gatherings. When wearing a mask outdoors, kids’ risk of getting COVID-19 is even lower. • GET THE RIGHT GEAR. PGA of America recommends getting kids a putter and a wedge that are made for kids their height, noting the availability of clubs specifically made for juniors. An age-appropriate wedge is short and easy to get in the air. That should make it easier for kids to play, increasing the chances they’ll enjoy themselves. • KEEP IT LIGHT AND FUN. Golf can frustrate even the most skilled professionals. It’s important to downplay any frustration kids feel. Parents playing alongside their children must avoid growing frustrated if their own rounds aren’t going well. PGA of America advises parents to not put any expectations on youngsters as they learn the game, focusing instead on how much fun it is to play a round at a beautiful course.
