LA GRANGE – A 22-year-old man was shot about 2:45 p.m. Monday in the zero to 100 block of Washington Avenue in La Grange. The La Grange Police Department reported it received several 911 calls about a drive-by shooting in the area of Calendar and Washington avenues. Officers responded to the area and found numerous people standing in the street surrounding a man who had been shot in the lower abdomen. Police said the man was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and was listed in stable condition after surgery Monday night. After interviewing people on the scene, witnesses said they heard three to four gun shots and then saw a gray Dodge four-door vehicle flee north on Washington Avenue. Police said there was no description of an offender available at this time in their investigation. Monday’s shooting was the second in La Grange in two months. A 16-yearold man was shot in the leg two blocks from Monday night’s shooting about
10:45 p.m. Nov. 21 in the area of Calender and Sawyer avenues. Police responded to the area after shots were reported but could not locate anyone. They learned the teenager was shot after he arrived at La Grange Memorial Hospital looking for treatment for minor injuries. In November, police said they did not believe the shooting was a driveby shooting or gang related, but an argument between the teen and several friends and a group of men in their late teens or early 20s. On Friday, investigators said the case for the shooting in November was ongoing, and the victim continued to refuse to cooperate with their investigation. In a news release, the La Grange Police Department said the shooting Monday was not believed to be random and the victim was targeted. Police are waiting to interview the man, who was shot, more thoroughly, according to the release. Anyone with information should contact the La Grange Police Department’s Investigations Division at 708579-2333.

Holiday sales growth in 2014 over 2013
Plans are already underway to expand the program for the 2015 holiday season. Becca Klinger, co-owner of Green It Up! Gift Shop, which saw the greatest sales increase – 60 percent – said the efforts of the bussiness association paid off in big dividends for business owners. Klinger said her store’s re-branding and name change a few months ago likely helped boost sales as well, but other businesses saw 18, 30, 40 and 45 percent increases. “The LGBA really promoted Small Business Saturday and our business span was Small Business Saturday until Christmas Eve,” Klinger said. “That

LA GRANGE – With holiday sales up as much as 60 percent over 2013 at businesses in La Grange, business and government leaders in the village of La Grange think they’ve touched on a formula for success. The village of La Grange and the La Grange Business Association expanded the annual Hometown Holiday Walk of years past into a full-blown holiday marketing blitz that kicked off with a wildly successful Small Business Saturday event Nov. 29, 2014. The blitz was highlighted by the Unwrap La Grange for a Hometown Holiday campaign, which La Grange Business Association President Phil Fornaro said was to “emphasize the small town holiday experience to a wider audience ... and to emphasize the amenities of La Grange, starting off with the holiday shopper rewards program. “This was the first year we rolled out this concept and it was an educational process for participating businesses and local consumers, which was very successful,” Fornaro said. That success, Fornaro believes was due to the exposure of the association promotion, the engagement of participating members, a more positive economic climate and excitement in the community, he said. “Good weather always helps. This campaign is part of our overall effort to encourage residents or visitors to support our neighborhood businesses,” Fornaro said. “The increase in revenue is a testament to the marketing power of the LGBA and quality of La Grange businesses.”

Flying club doesn’t let weather stop the fun By MEGAN PIOTROWSKI editorial@mysuburbanlife.com McCOOK – For a town with only 231 residents, the McCook Athletic & Exposition Center, or the MAX, at 4750 S. Vernon Ave., is massive. Not only is it the site of many indoor soccer games and even baseball practices, but the MAX also is the home of the newly formed Max-PRC Electric Flying Club. “This was an amazing find,” Dave Printz, a Burr Ridge resident and organizer of the PRC Electric Flying Club, said of the MAX. Printz and a couple of guys from the outdoor Palos R/C Flying Club, which flies gas-powered airplanes, helicopters, drones, kites and more, founded PRC Electric Club in July 2014 when they were looking for an indoor facility to fly their electric airplanes. According to Printz, the group sports about 75 members from ages 8 to 90. In good, summer weather, the group meets monthly at the Willow Springs Community Center and regularly heads to Cook County’s forest preserves to fly their planes. Members

It’s Your Money
By Linda Sokol Francis, E.A. IRA ROLLOVER RULES EXPLAINED The Internal Revenue Service does not always offer the clearest explanations. The first set of rules about IRA rollovers were so fuzzy that the changes were put off until this January 1. Understand that in true rollover, the money is transferred directly to the owner, who then has 60 days to put it into another IRA or have to pay taxes - and maybe a penalty - on the money. (And the IRS is sticky; being even one day late can cost taxes and penalties.) Originally, one could roll over each IRA once a year, no matter how many IRAs one had. No more. Now, an IRA owner can do just one rollover in a 12-month period, period. What hasn’t changed, though, is the trustee-to-trustee transfer, in which the owner never actually touches the money. There are no limits on how many such transfers can be made. Many financial experts consider such transfers much safer, feeling that it can be dangerous to treat IRAs as a source of short-term loans.

Pace seeking funding for $2.3 billion project SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Pace is banking on a long shot to find a shortcut to funding a two-step transportation plan that would improve bus service to the suburbs in a six-county area. Pace has submitted a $2.3 billion plan to the U.S. Department of Transportation for review through the Projects of National and Regional Importance program, with the hope its plan will be picked for funding from numerous other plans submitted from transportation agencies around the country. The Rapid Transit Network has two components: The Arterial Bus Rapid Transit System would add routes and enhanced stations run on an express basis with less frequent stops, and the renovation of Pulse stations would provide easier access to buses
and have an improved waiting environment, as well as electrical signage indicating bus arrival times. The Suburban Expressway Service essentially would expand the service initiated in 2011 on Interstate 55 where buses ride on expressway shoulders to the far west suburbs and back to such destinations as the U of I campus in Chicago and Union Station. To support the express service, commuter lots were built in Bolingbrook, Burr Ridge, Plainfield and Romeoville. Under Pace’s submitted proposal, Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot said the expressway service would grow to include highway and tollways in six counties, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will. “A lot of this is aimed at trying to reduce travel times,”
Wilmot said. “Buses will be able to travel along these corridors more quickly.” The $2.3 billion cost for the plan includes purchasing more buses, the construction of three garage facilities and technology that allows buses to communicate with traffic signals. Pace has a pilot program with IDOT in Chicago’s south suburbs where buses communicate with traffic signals – much in the same way fire trucks and emergency vehicles can – to allow buses to pass through traffic signals if a bus is running late or to clear a bus from a busy intersection after passengers disembark. “But this is a lower level of priority,” Wilmot said. “Our system sends a request to the signal. It will only change if it doesn’t negatively impact the traffic flow on the cross street.”

State Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside, said comprehensive criminal justice reform, appropriate state funding for local schools and continued progress toward a stronger economy and safer neighborhoods are at the top of the list in 2015. Zalewski joined colleagues Jan. 13 to be sworn in as members of the 99th General Assembly in a ceremony at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Major changes for state government under Gov. Bruce Rauner’s new Republican leadership may be on the horizon. “I look forward to working with the new governor and my colleagues in the House on balancing our state budget and on the issues that matter most to the residents of my district,” Zalewski stated in a news release. Zalewski said he and mem-
bers of the Joint Criminal Justice Reform Committee plan to keep working on how Illinois can start reducing penalties for low-level drug offenses and thefts while also looking at how sentences requiring offenders to serve minimum periods behind bars affect the population and offenders’ chances of committing additional crimes. “We need to have a serious debate about who are we putting behind bars and why,” Zalewski stated. “We want to create a system that redirects low-level offenders who do not need to be imprisoned and who should not return once they are released and that locks away violent, dangerous criminals to prevent them from wreaking havoc on our streets.” Zalewski said he also will be working on legislation to promote locking devices on prescription pill bottles to deter abuse.

College president’s payout shows officials need to be watched SPRINGFIELD – Sometimes elected officials forget who’s the boss. They think they are accountable only to themselves. The reality is it’s the voters who put them in office and the taxpayers who pay the bills who are in charge. At least that is how things are supposed to work. At the very least, we deserve to know how elected officials are spending our money. All too often elected offiVIEWS cials are as transparent as a Scott slab of concrete. A good case Reeder in point is the College of DuPage. Last week, that suburban community college board voted to give $762,000 to the college’s president, Robert Breuder so he would resign. That’s an awful lot of money to pay someone to do nothing. More importantly, it’s our money. And the board of that public institution is mum about why they want him to quit or, more importantly, why they think he deserves almost double the annual salary of the president of the United States to do nothing. That’s the height of arrogance. But it’s not a particularly uncommon situation for elected officials to be so secretive. The biggest items in just about any governmental entities’ budget are salaries. And yet, when school boards, city councils and other local governments vote on contracts for their unionized employees, they often don’t let the public know the details until after the measure has been approved. Apparently, they don’t want to hear opinions of voters before they consider a measure. How pathetic. Shouldn’t the public know the particulars of the contract before the vote? State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, thinks so. During the last legislative session, she pushed for a measure to require local governments to post the details of labor contacts well before a vote. The measure died. There is no telling what government transparency bills will be introduced this year. Some of the bills may be good, others not so much. But one thing is certain: More transparency is needed. As former Gov. Jim Edgar used to say of government, “Sunshine is the best disinfectant.” And elected officials should remember: The public needs to know.

OUR VIEW
Zalewski, legislature must turn words into action State Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside, said something recently in a news release that sounded great to us. Zalewski, whose district includes La Grange, La Grange Park and Countryside, among other towns, said: “I look forward to working with the new governor and my colleagues in the House on balancing our state budget and on the issues that matter most to the residents of my district.” That first part, about working with the governor, is an attention grabber. Sure, politicians the world over often make a habit of playing nice in the immediate aftermath of a regime change. But in Illinois, where even getting along for appearances’ sake can sometimes be a bridge too far for many, such rhetoric may be seen as a sign of progress. And progress is what voters expect. Illinois, a blue state that hasn’t voted for a Republican for president since 1988, didn’t turn Pat Quinn out of office just because of a perceived lack of leadership. It was because Bruce Rauner offers hope of a different way of doing business in Springfield, and that’s something that’s desperately needed. Does that mean we expect Zalewski and Rauner to become fast friends and agree with each other on every issue? Of course not. On issues where they truly have deep-seated convictions that can’t be reconciled, they should each stick to their guns. But that shouldn’t happen with every issue, or even very many issues.
Among the topics where voters expect the two parties to find room to compromise are: • A solution that brings about real pension reform, whether the Illinois Supreme Court strikes down the existing law or not. The state retirement plans’ shortfall has been estimated at more than $100 billion, and there’s no path to solvency for the state that doesn’t include a real solution here. • Some certainty on the tax rate. Rauner campaigned on letting the Quinn-era tax hikes expire. We’re in favor of that, but it’s got to be done in a measured, responsible way so that the loss of that income doesn’t cripple essential state programs. • Stemming the outflow of people and businesses. We’ve been hearing for years that Indiana and Wisconsin, among other states, are eagerly snatching up Illinois businesses. Now comes word that so many residents left the state in 2014 that it suffered a net loss in population of 10,000 people. • A host of other issues, such as transportation, education funding, property taxes, balancing budgets and more. The voters clearly liked a lot of what they heard from Rauner on the campaign trail, but he can’t rule by decree (nor would we want him to). It’s going to take legislators like Zalewski following up their kind words with meaningful action to get Illinois out of the financial tailspin it’s in.

I recently have the new, unfavorable task of driving through the intersection of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road, specifically westbound Ogden [Avenue] approaching La Grange Road. Driving under that train overpass, I must say, the backup is a disaster during rush hour, morning and afternoon. With all the discussion and lawsuits over the abandoned property where the YMCA was, can the village of La Grange wake up – and while nothing has been built there yet – add a much needed right turn lane there from the road that leads down to that park extended to La Grange Road? Move a few poles, cut away some of those empty cement lots there, put a traffic signal that has a green arrow that allows for right turns onto La Grange Road while La Grange Road traffic is turning left onto Ogden [Avenue], and that back-up will ease up two-fold.

Bridge and lying in the woods. Police searched the woods and found a man lying on the frozen Des Plaines River. He was lying on the northeast side of the river adjacent to the intersection of Ogden and Miller, about 10 to 15 feet off the shore. The ice was thin and the subject was helped off by the officers. The man did not have to be rescued, as he was offered a hand by the responding officers and walked from the ice to the
riverbank. The man told police he had a headache and was transported to a waiting Riverside Fire Department paramedic unit located on Ogden Avenue. After determining he was in need of medical assistance, he was transferred to Mac Neal Hospital in Berwyn for a medical evaluation and treatment. The man, an employee of car dealership on Harlem Avenue in Lyons, told police he was feeling unwell and was in-
jured in some capacity at work but did not go to the doctor or hospital immediately. He then left work, intending to walk to Mac Neal Hospital in Berwyn on his own. Sometime later, police received the 911 call reporting he needed assistance. When transported by paramedics to Mac Neal Hospital, the man was conscious and alert and not in a life-threatening situation, police said. Police are still investigat-
ing how he came to be on the ice. Initial indications are he had some type of head injury, which caused confusion for him and ended up walking onto the river, police said. It is not known how long he had been on the ice before he dialed 911 asking for assistance. As the subject has not been charged with any crime, police are not releasing his name, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said.

this hobby, and they come and have a blast,” Carrigan said. Printz said the MAX is a great place for many reasons. A few of them being the MAX’s 40-foot ceilings, optimal lighting and use of AstroTurf. “The AstroTurf is great because it’s so forgiving if you crash your plane,” Printz said. “We thought we might need to lay a hard surface over it at first, but the planes are able to take off just fine.” The MAX-PRC Electric Flying Club meets from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in McCook. The club also meets from 9 p.m. to midnight on the first Monday of the month for Nite-Flites so people busy during the day can get a chance to fly as well. Printz said a great opportunity for newcomers to get a sense of the fun is at their open flight events. The club will host their next open flight March 2 at the MAX. Newcomers without planes of their own will have the opportunity to test-fly planes at the open flight event. Two trainer airplanes will be available with assistance from club members. “You can teach yourself how to fly now because the technology is so good,” Printz said of the ease of picking up the hobby. The prices have come down, too, making it more affordable to hobbyist who are looking to get involved. The cost for an electric plane ranges from $90 to $180, Printz said. For information, visit the group’s website at www.palosrc.com or email Dave Printz at dprintz@dprintz.com.

come from all over the Western Suburbs to join in the fun. While the Palos R/C Flying Club accommodated many types of planes to fly outdoors, there wasn’t a nearby facility to accommodate indoor flying. Not until this past July, that is. While most people may be familiar with model airplanes flown outdoors, electric airplanes are a subset all their own, Printz said. Electric planes operate how you might expect. They fly via a remote control or transmitter, but they normally are much smaller in size than typical outdoor model planes. “The sizes of electric planes range from a drone that can fit in the palm of your hand to something with a wingspan of about 3 feet,” Printz said. Typical outdoor model airplanes average 3 to 5 feet in size, and some use a gas engine to fly, Printz said. Because of their smaller size and advances in technology, electric airplanes aren’t difficult to fly indoors; they just need a good amount of space. That’s where the MAX comes in. Prior to flying at the MAX, Printz would travel 50 miles round trip to a facility called Legends Sportsplex in Bradley-Bourbonnais to fly. Printz had gone to other recreational facilities in Bensenville and Oak Lawn, but neither had accessible flying times or even ceilings that were high enough for a good flight. It wasn’t until Printz’s landscaper mentioned his kids played soccer at the MAX that he got the idea to fly planes there. “We love having the guys here,” said Grant Carrigan, general manger at the MAX. “They’re just a good group of users.” It’s a mutual partnership. The PRC Electric Flying Club makes use of the facility during some off hours, and the MAX serves as an ideal location for the club to fly. “They have an absolute love for

GLEN ELLYN – Newcomer a toda madre is a testament to the importance of culinary balance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn by Geneva’s Bien Trucha, opened late in 2014, with equal parts sophistication and comfort. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the small-town charm of the restaurant’s surroundings provides a pleasant contrast to its elegant, urban interior. Behind the bar is an exposed brick wall boasting a vast array of tequila. The vintage molding on the ceiling is glazed an elegant white. Modern blue tiles cover the floor of the bar, while the dining room is softened by hardwood and low lighting that bathes an abstract floral mural’s organic tones. The aesthetic is contemporary with a hint of nostalgia. Even after 9 p.m., the place was packed, buzzing with upbeat Friday night chatter. Several parties mingled near the bar, hoping to score a table. Fortunately, my dining companion and I had a reservation. We were seated, and a bowl of thick tortilla chips appeared, accompanied by smoky refried beans. The menu features a variety of items, from appetizers to full plates, all of which are meant to be shared. We began with an appetizer of tostada de ceviche topped with frizzled leeks. Spotlighting tilapia and apple, it was aggressively bright and acidic – an energizing start to the meal. Warm tacos pescado followed, the mild fish accented with creamy red cabbage slaw. We couldn’t limit ourselves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, as well. The quartet provided a pleasing, adventurous medley of textures, from the velvety salsa verde cruda to the tender skirt steak to chicharron for engaging crunch. We also opted for the frijoles borrachos – drunken beans with pork belly, pico de gallo and Mexican beer – which

Team-first attitude pays off for LT girls By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – Team play is the first thing Lyons Township girls basketball coach Paul Krick talks about this season. The Lions’ teamwork, chemistry and unselfishness has helped LT surge ahead to first place in the West Suburban Silver and a 15-4 overall record. The Lions are now 8-0 in the Sports to Silver with a twogame lead on the your phone nearest competition after topping Visit shawurl. The playing time and roles of the three inside players is the epitome of what has made the Lions successful this season. Miller is 6-feet tall, Pender is 6-foot2, Corrigan is 5-foot-11 and even 5-foot11 sophomore Claire Purcell sees some regular playing time as well. That much height is hard to cope with for opposing teams and prevents foul trouble from ever having a big impact on the team. “We’re a tough team to play,” Krick said. “When you don’t have a superstar on the team, we play team basketball. We’ve been harping on post presence for the last two years and the girls have been working really hard at trying to develop their confidence and their footwork and being able to contribute both offensively and defen-

At Montini, a 62-23 loss on Jan. 17, the Lions started 2-for-20 from the field and never got
back into the game. Two days later, they came back from 14 points down in the first half to beat Fenwick 54-46. Against RB, the Lions fell behind 122, but battled back to take a lead in the second quarter. Ultimately, the Lions lost to their neighbors despite 16 points
from senior guard Victoria Swift. “We’ve been getting off to rough starts, but we usually bring it back in the second half,” Miller said. “We’ve been doing really well throughout the season. It’s been fun with a lot of team wins.”

able to get back to within three on a pair of occasions in the final minute. Daniko Jackson had a clear look at a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it rimmed out. Sam Johnson led RB with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jalen Clanton also scored 20 points. The story of the game was Eastern, whose 32 points was a career high. The 6-foot-5 sophomore was tough for RB to defend and showed elite skills. Going up against players like that is why the Bulldogs competed in the shootout. “This is why we play these games,” McCloskey said. “Even just watching, that team was very athletic. Every-
thing is tough to do. It’s hard to run a half-court offense against a team like that and I thought at times we did. I thought we took a few bad shots, but all in all I thought we battled.” Evanston’s length and speed on defense made for a lot of difficult shots for RB. Meanwhile, Evanston was able to create more high-percentage looks. Despite all that, RB was still in the game throughout. “The key was they shot 34 percent and we were 52 percent,” Evanston coach Mike Ellis said. “That paints a picture that we contested a lot of shots, didn’t give up a lot of layups inside around the basket.”

LOMBARD – Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team faced one of its toughest opponents Saturday and came up short, but the quality competition is why the Bulldogs were in the game. RB lost 66-63 against Evanston at Glenbard East’s When Sides Collide shootout. The Wildkits got 32 points from Nojel Eastern, one of the most heavily recruited sophomores in the state. It was just the second loss of the season for RB (17-2), but coach Tom
McCloskey was not discouraged by the defeat. “I thought it was a great game for us to head into February,” McCloskey said. “I thought Evanston was extremely athletic. Like I told our guys, everything you do is harder against a team with that much athleticism. You set screens, you got to really set screens. You go up to the basket, you got to go hard. Everything has to be at a high level because they are very, very athletic.” The Bulldogs stayed close early on, but the Wildkits started to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as eight points. Area teams find new stars to shine on court By DAN SANTAROMITA New players emerge as standouts each basketball season, from underclassmen getting their first taste of varsity ball to juniors and seniors making the most of increased playing time. Here is a list of some of the most impressive newcomers and improved returners on area girls basketball teams.
Maggie Harrington
School: Nazareth Class: Senior Position: Forward Impact: The 5-foot-10 senior is a first-
year starter for the Roadrunners this season, and she has made an immediate positive impact. One of her season accolades was getting named to the all-tournament team at Riverside Brookfield’s holiday tournament.
Lyndsey Hoyd
School: Riverside Brookfield Class: Sophomore Position: Guard Impact: Hoyd was a productive play-
er on varsity last season, but didn’t always start. Now in her second year with the Bulldogs, she’s become a one of the team’s best weapons. She’s a deadly 3-point shooter who scored 23 points in the final of RB’s holiday tournament.
Chloe Maietta
School: Morton Class: Junior Position: Guard Impact: Maietta was a starter last year

and is in her third year on varsity, but she has taken her game to another level this season. The junior point guard runs the team with more composure this season and still brings her tough defense, good speed and strong ballhandling to the table.
Hope Miller
School: Lyons Township Class: Senior Position: Center Impact: Miller has stepped up to be-
come one of the team’s more reliable players. The 6-foot senior has been the most veteran member of the Lions’ deep frontcourt, which includes three other players at 5-foot-11 or taller, and that strength in the post is one of the reasons LT is in the thick of the West Suburban Silver race.
