The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce, established in 1945, is a not-for-profit organization of businesses representing industry, retail, service professionals, and agriculture in partnership with tourism and government to further promote economic growth and quality of life in Mendota. The strength of the Chamber lies in the active involvement of its membership. Both large and small businesses are represented and influence the direction of the organization.
The Chamber office makes referrals of its members and promotes them through a variety of activities, making the public aware of the goods and services available here in Mendota from its membership.
Sponsoring community events and promoting tourism such as Mendota’s Annual Sweet Corn Festival, one of the largest harvest festivals in the Midwest, annually attracting more than 60,000 visitors to Mendota, is also an important role of the Chamber. The Chamber office organizes the hundreds of volunteers necessary for this and other smaller events during the year.
The Chamber acts as a community information center, answering a variety of questions daily from the public.

Mcollector, city treasurer, and city attorney serve its 7,000 residents. Although two separate fires have impacted downtown, Mendota administration is committed to revitalization, beautification, and growth of its businesses and amenities to ensure the city’s continued vitality for work and play.
With a 16-member full-time police force, the Mendota Police Department maintains 24-hour patrol. Mendota police work with citizens to have community watch groups in local neighborhoods. The Mendota Police Department is part of the TRIDENT Drug Narcotics Unit, provides a school resource officer at Mendota High School, and will have a K9 unit in late 2024.
For fast, reliable information in case of an emergency, residents are encouraged to sign up for CODE RED. Information can be found on the home page of the city’s website, www.Mendota.il.us.
Homes in Mendota
Quality of life is a top priority in Mendota. Residents enjoy access to quality schools and health care, as well as a variety of recreational opportunities.
The houses in Mendota are diverse, from modest single-family homes and apartments to condominiums, stately Victorians, and new residential developments. Quaint, tree-lined streets and quiet neighborhoods are in abundance here, making for a family-friendly environment.

Government
The Mendota Fire Department has a full fleet of top firefighting and rescue equipment to handle emergencies, including three engines, one aerial tower, a heavy-duty rescue vehicle, and one rapid response vehicle.
A Regional Dispatch Center serves the community and provides rapid dispatch for police, fire, and emergency services.
The Mendota Civic Center is a full-service facility situated on Lake Mendota. Used often by the entire Illinois Valley, it offers meeting, conference, and banquet rooms that seat a wide range from 15 to 500 people.

With numerous parks and recreational hotspots, Mendota has a lot of opportunities for fitness and nature lovers. Mendota maintains 325 acres of parkland, including 71 lakeside acres.
Lake Mendota Park and Lake Kakusha are in the northwest section of town. Spanning 68 acres, Lake Mendota offers game fishing and has a pier that provides handicap access. The park features playgrounds, a pickle ball court, dog park, Frisbee golf, a volleyball court, baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, and picnic grounds with grills and shelters. Nearby Lake Kakusha, a wildlife refuge, is comprised of 104 acres. It also has spots for picnics, game fishing in the lake, and plenty of secluded areas for relaxing and enjoying being in a beautiful natural setting.
Snyders Grove Nature Area is 98 acres and sits two miles southeast of town. With three other city parks, Apple Orchard Park, Strouss Park, and Blackstone Park, Mendota has plenty of spots for people to spend some time individually or with a group in the great outdoors. Apple Orchard Park and Blackstone Park both have playground equipment and picnic

shelters. Blackstone Park also has public tennis courts.
Strouss Park has a swimming pool, basketball hoops, baseball and softball diamonds, playground equipment, and picnic areas with shelters and grills.
For young athletes, Little League offers a multi-team program for girls softball and boys baseball for ages 6 to 12 and a senior league team program for 15- to 16-yearolds. Other sporting opportunities are there as well, including youth soccer, youth wrestling, and junior tackle football.
For those looking to stay active and fit, the Mendota Y offers additional athletic opportunities, such as group fitness classes, health seminars, and health screenings in conjunction with OSF Saint Paul Medical Center. They also offer personal trainers for individualized workout instruction. For children, the Y provides a youth summer recreation program called Adventure Camp, a day camp, after-school program, basketball, volleyball, and NFL flag football.
Six sanctioned bowling alleys are located in the Mendota Elks Lodge, offering league and open bowling for members and guests.
Three miles west of the city, the Mendota Golf Club has an 18-hole course with reasonable rates for non-members. They offer league play for men and women and a clubhouse offering a pro shop, food service, and bar.
For a unique recreational opportunity, the small, nearby community of Triumph is home to Waltham Curling Club, which operates a three-lane curling court or ice field that can be rented for private use from December through February.
With several Illinois State Parks in the area, Mendota residents enjoy exceptional recreational amenities. Starved Rock State Park has miles of hiking trails that wind through canyons and atop bluffs. There are also camping, fishing, boating, and picnic areas in the 3,200-acre park. Nearby Buffalo Rock State Park provides a panoramic view of the Illinois River from its high bluff. Families come to picnic, view the live buffalo, and stay at the lodge that is open year-round. Matthiessen State Park showcases spectacular geological formations and canyons, and Canal State Trail provides opportunities for hiking, biking, and even snowmobiling.
OTHER CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE THREE MUSEUMS:
THE HUME-CARNEGIE MUSEUM contains an extensive photographic collection covering more than 150 years of the area’s history, Wild Bill Hickok memorabilia, items fashioned by various Mendota industries, and changing exhibits dealing with Native American items, local sports, and military displays
UNION DEPOT RAILROAD MUSEUM, located in a restored part of an 1888 depot, contains an HO train layout showing 1930s Mendota in life-like detail, and outdoor rolling stock, including the CB & Q #4978 steam locomotive.
THE BREAKING OF THE PRAIRIE MUSEUM is housed in a replica barn with glass walls for open viewing and is also comprised of another building – a prairie chapel.
There is a 2,000-seat gymnasium at Mendota Township High School for viewing of sporting events. The high school also has a 524-seat auditorium for not only school productions and symphony, jazz and choral concerts, but productions put on by the Mendota Community Theatre Group and musicals by 3M Productions, a group comprised of talented residents, representing Mendota High School, Mendota Education Association, and the Mendota Community Theatre.
JONES HOME IMPROVEMENT
Education
Mendota is served by two school districts – Mendota Elementary School District #289 and Mendota Township High School District #280.
Mendota Elementary School District #289 has three elementary schools. The District 289 Education Center holds Preschool Special Education classrooms, speech and physical therapy classrooms, and administrative offices. The total enrollment of the District #289 schools is over 1,100
BLACKSTONE SCHOOL
This school, where the youngest members of the school district can learn and have fun, is for kindergarten and first grade. It has a media center, library, and computer lab.
LINCOLN SCHOOL
Lincoln School serves students in second grade, third grade, and fourth grade. Like Blackstone, it has a media center, library, and computer lab. In each classroom, it also has computers linked to the World Wide Web.
NORTHBROOK SCHOOL
This school serves fifth-grade elementary students and sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade middle school students. It has a media center, mobile laptops, and desktop PCs. With many extracurricular opportunities, the school hosts basketball and volleyball games, band, choral concerts, and other community activities.
MENDOTA TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT #280
The high school has an enrollment of 488 students and offers many opportunities for students, both in academics and extracurriculars. The school offers dual credit coursework in conjunction with Illinois Valley Community College, FFA activities, and fine arts.
The students of MHS learn in a 1:1 technology environment with Chromebooks. The high school, built in 2003, includes a complete outdoor athletic and co-curricular complex that is utilized by physical education classes, agriculture greenhouse and Waldorf Agricultural Center, as well as athletic activities of football, soccer, track, baseball, softball, and tennis.
HOLY CROSS SCHOOL
Holy Cross offers pre-school enrichment and a parochial grade school, with an enrollment of 180, for students in preschool through eighth grade. It’s
known for its academic excellence, a safe environment, and having many extracurricular and sports activities. They offer a faith-based education, an advanced technology program, small class sizes, and strive to challenge each student to reach full potential through spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, and physical development. They offer a year-round Child Care Program as well.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN EXCELLENCE
Northern Illinois School of Christian Excellence is a small private Christian school that has a low student/teacher ratio. The staff at the school places a high emphasis on critical thinking, while encouraging them to study Scriptures. The school can accept students ranging from preschool through high school. The high school offers college prep courses, foreign languages, athletic training and competition, as well as travel opportunities throughout the U.S.
Many Mendota residents attend Illinois Valley Community College, 20 miles from Mendota in Oglesby. IVCC offers courses and degrees required for effective transfer to baccalaureate degree programs, occupational/technical courses, certificates, and degrees leading directly to successful employment and continuing education courses. Northern Illinois University at DeKalb is just 45 miles from Mendota.

Part of Mendota’s small-town charm is the convenience and personalized service of its shops and restaurants. With a variety of merchandise and services, Mendota’s shopping and dining districts are one of the city’s highlights. Family-owned businesses offer apparel, accessories, gifts, furniture, greenhouse plants and florals, office supplies, liquors, and more.
Numerous chain retail businesses also help residents and visitors find everything they need. Mendota’s chain businesses include three major automobile dealerships, a farm implement dealership, lumberyard, grocery and convenience stores, pharmacy, hardware, automotive supplies, gas stations, and discount stores.

Eleven churches, many of them in beautifully built, historic buildings, represent various denominations. The congregations sponsor social clubs and a variety of youth-oriented activities, including a community Vacation Bible School.
More than 50 civic, fraternal, and social organizations and clubs are active and meet regularly. These groups, with their many caring volunteers and community spirit, maintain and improve the quality of life in Mendota.

Health Care
OSF HealthCare Saint Paul Medical Center, located at 1401 East 12th Street, began in 1951 and is a non-profit 25-bed Critical Access Hospital. There are 16 physicians on the hospital’s active medical staff, which includes family medicine providers and general surgery. The hospital has an additional 18 Allied Health professionals, 126 physicians on its consulting staff, and 98 contracted providers. OSF Saint Paul offers various outpatient specialty clinics, including cardiology, neurology, nephrology, obstetric/gynecology, oncology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology, urology, and a wound clinic.
Services and departments offered by the hospital include 24-hour emergency services with emergency room physicians available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; Medical-Surgical unit, 4-bed intensive care unit, day surgery, surgery, laboratory, rehabilitation services, cardiopulmonary services, cardiac and pulmonary rehab. Diagnostic Imaging offers services around the clock with its
in-house MRI, CT scanner\ with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, 30 mammography, and nuclear medicine scans.
The hospital has more than 200 employees on staff.
In addition to the facilities at OSF Saint Paul Medical Center, there are many health clinics in Mendota and the surrounding area providing health care services to the people of Mendota. One of those clinics is Davis Family Health, which is located at 1201 Meriden St. in Mendota. The clinic has a primary physician who offers services such as physicals and primary care. The clinic also offers other services as well, such as massage, Botox, allergy shots, Vitamin B shots, and lip fillers.
Community Health Partnership provides cancer screenings, family planning, primary and oral health care, and community outreach.
In DeKalb, within driving distance from Mendota, people in search of medical support also have another option –Compassus. Compassus offers top-notch
care to those who need home-based care services. These services allow patients to retain their independence and dignity. Compassus can help whether someone needs compassionate end-of-life care or in-home services like IV therapy.
Mendota also features two high quality nursing homes facilities that provide the best possible care to residents. Allure of Mendota is a licensed facility in the southwest corner of the city, providing short-term and long-term care. The facility is certified for Medicare and Medicaid and houses 85 senior citizens. They receive complete nursing care with all Medicare/ rehab to home private suites. They also have physical, occupational, and speech therapies.
Stonecroft Village Retirement Community provides a quiet and serene atmosphere on the west end of Burlington Street. They have independent living and assisted living accommodations. The support services are within a caring, resident-focused environment that people can really call home.
Business & Industry
With a solid industrial base, Mendota affords opportunities to growing companies, both new and existing. Numerous highly diversified manufacturing plants, most with international distribution, currently provide a good share of jobs for the men and women of Mendota.
Area industrial and business employers benefit from the proximity of training programs provided through Illinois Valley Community College.
Through the use of incentives, new industry is continually drawn to the Mendota area. There are area Tax Increment Financing Districts to assist in financing new development and improve infrastructure. The city administration and an Economic Development Department are focused on planned growth and productive expansion. Mendota’s financial institutions are also prepared to lend strong support to new business.
Mendota’s Business Park has a flexible development plan to attract firms needing small to large acreage sites. The city-owned park offers competitive land costs and excellent location advantages. It is located on the east side of Mendota adjacent to Interstate 39. Sites include service by rail line Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, close proximity to I-80 and I-88, and municipal water and sewer to the property line.
Tourism
Mendota has become wellknown for its largest tourist event – the Annual Sweet Corn Festival. This event is always held on the second full weekend in August and brings 50,000 people to Mendota to join in on the fun and to eat some delicious sweet corn.
The festival offers free entertainment every day that appeals to young and old festival attendees. In addition to that, there are balloon twisters, magicians, professional face painters, a queen pageant, and musical entertainment, running the range from classic rock-n-roll to country. There is a carnival on the midways and a crafter’s marketplace and flea market with beautiful handmade crafts, arts, antiques, and collectibles.
For adult entertainment, there is a beer garden in the evening featuring highenergy live bands. On the Sunday of the festival, the grand parade always is a big crowd-pleaser as it makes its way down Mendota’s tree-lined streets. The parade features drill teams, bands, Shrine groups, antique farm implements, floats, and performers.
The food at the festival is outstanding, with food booths lining the streets and offering ethnic, regional, and festival foods. The “big event” is when the free, hot, buttered sweet corn is served, which takes place on Sunday afternoon. All that sweet corn is cooked
in an antique steam traction engine before it is served by the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce and numerous volunteers. The corn is dripping with butter and salted to your personal taste.

OTHER BIG DRAWS FOR MENDOTA
FOOD TRUCK MAINIA MONDAYS On the second and fourth Monday evenings of each month from June through October, food trucks can be found on Main Street next to the Union Depot. The event, run by Reimagine Mendota, hosts six to ten trucks.
THE MENDOTA MUSEUM & HISTORICAL SOCIETY
presents a Railroad Crossing & Country Fair event on Father’s Day weekend at Mendota’s Union Depot Railroad Museum and the Breaking of the Prairie Museum. Featuring old-time demonstrations, a tractor show, and tours of both museums, it gives visitors a glimpse into Mendota’s historical railroad and agricultural past.
3M MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS hosts an annual musical on the first weekend in August. Talented performers from Mendota and the surrounding area, representing the Mendota Education Association, Mendota High School, and the Mendota Community Theatre, produce first-class musicals such as “Grease,” “Cats,” “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Footloose.”
OTHER SUMMER EVENTS include an Ice Cream Social and concert by the Mendota High School Band and Mendota’s 4th of July fireworks display at Lake Mendota.
THE MENDOTA TRI-COUNTY FAIR closes the summer of fun events on Labor Day weekend.

The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce and The Mendota Reporter, in a joint project, are seeking nominations from the customers of the retail, service, and professional businesses in the community for that outstanding employee in Mendota.
