“West Side Story and More” tells the story of rival street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Former Jets member Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, amid the tensions. The two fight to find a way to be together, even as those closest to them threaten to rip them apart, leading to tragedy.
The cast includes Clara Owen as Maria, Brady McCue as Tony, Ben Fowler as Bernardo, Ellie Books as Anita and Brandon Fowler as Riff.
The Beth Fowler production features music from the 1961 film adaptation of the Broadway show of the same name. The performance will be choreographed by Anna Nolazco, Rachael
Kollins-Merchut, Jennifer Flatland, Brooke Fowler and Tamera Newquist. Tickets cost $24 for adults, $15 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for children ages 3 and younger. Filicetti said she feels some people have become increasingly concerned about where their food is coming from.
“I think definitely since [COVID-19] it’s been more of a concern from customers,” Filicetti said. “It’s great because you get to talk to the farmer or the vendor that works at the farm or property and grows, so they can ask more questions about it versus going to a grocery store, you pick it off the shelf and you go check out. You get that oneon-one interaction. You get to know where your food is coming from, who’s growing it.”

One such program, Filicetti said, that’s helped people to afford the locally grown fresh produce they desire is the market’s Link Match program. Link cards are provided to those in Illinois who quality to receive SNAP food assistance benefits.
Filicetti said the DeKalb Farmers’ kee Valley Art League in Sycamore has been canceled, organizers said Wednesday.

Market is the only market in DeKalb County with a Link Match program that allows those with a Link card to double their benefits to purchase fresh produce.
“It’s still a fairly new program and we’re definitely trying to spread the word about how you can get so much fresh fruits and vegetables, produce all at the same time at the market,” Filicetti said. “It’s a great opportunity. We’re the only market in the county that offers that. There are others throughout the state, but we’re the only ones in the county that do that.”

DeKalb library to host film screening of ‘Pride’ June 10
DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library will host a screening of the 2014 British historical comedy-drama film “Pride” to celebrate Pride Month.
The film will be shown at 10 a.m. June 10 in the library’s lower-level Yusunas Meeting Room, 309 Oak St., according to a news release.
The screening is free and intended for adults.
“Pride,” directed by Matthew Warchus and written by Stephen Beresford, tells the story of a lesbian and gay activist group that raised money for families affected by the 1984 British miners’ strike. The strike became the outset of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The movie is rated R. No registration is required to attend. Grief support group to meet June 13, 27 at DeKalb library

DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library will host two grief support meetings for those experiencing grief and loss.
The sessions will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 13 and 27 in the library’s lower-level Bilder Family Meeting Room, 309 Oak St., according to a news release. The meetings are free and intended for adults.
Attendees can join other people experiencing loss and grief to receive support in a safe and confidential setting. Participants can learn more about grief, share grief experiences, and receive grieving process insight from peers and the group facilitator.
The group will be facilitated by a ProMedica Hospice bereavement coordinator.
No registration is required to attend. The support group doesn’t replace other mental health services. If you need individual counseling or other mental health services, call 815-3973691 or 211. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or need immediate attention for a non-life-threatening mental health need, call 988. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911.

Cocktails at the Crib fundraiser set for June 24 in Sycamore
SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County History Center will host its second annual “Cocktails at the Crib” fundraiser to support the center’s corn crib.
The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. June 24, at the history center, 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore, according to a news release.
The fundraiser will showcase the history of the center’s corn crib. The fundraiser also includes a silent auction, a cash bar, games and a tour of the “History of DeKalb County in 100 Objects” exhibit.
Music will be performed by Craig Mathey and Friends. Appetizers, desserts, wine, water, soft drinks and beer will be served. Souvenir cocktail glasses will be provided while supplies last.
Tickets cost $50. Attendees are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance.

Sycamore Veterans Grove to host Flag Day celebration June 14
SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Veterans Grove will host a celebration in honor of Flag Day.
The celebration will be at 11 a.m. June 14 at the grove, 150 Maplewood Drive in Sycamore, according to a news release. Admission is free and open to the public.
The celebration includes a keynote speaker, a color guard, and a roll call of the grove’s veterans. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Parking is available at Sycamore Middle School.
The Sycamore Veterans Grove hosts more than 60 benches and trees honoring veterans connected to Sycamore.

Kaneland student earns $1K Deja Family Foundation scholarship
SUGAR GROVE – Abbey Mondi of Kaneland High School is the recipient of the Deja Family Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship was presented to Mondi during the Kaneland High School Senior Awards Night May 18, according to a news release.

Ministries and Resale Shop, local charities, and community services. She plans to major in business administration and minor in Spanish at Augustana College.
The Deja Family Foundation provides community assistance and scholarships in memory of the Deja family. The scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who exhibits service, leadership, kindness and serves as an example to the community.
