SYCAMORE – State Rep. Jeff Keicher, R-Sycamore, is working with 70th House District officials to increase enforcement and develop new policy proposals to prevent roadside trash from waste-hauling trucks, according to a news release. The trash has raised community safety and environmental concerns and caused damage to farmers’ fields and operations, according to the release. “For years, I’ve been frustrated with the trash that’s been windblown from waste haulers going from transfer stations to landfills through our communities,” Keicher said. “Besides the litter problem, trash blowing off waste trucks is a safety hazard, and it is damaging local farmers’ fields and equipment. Current law places nominal fines on the truck driver, but we need a new approach that incentivizes wasting hauling companies to transport trash more securely and support communities when cleanup is needed.” Keicher’s district includes parts of DeKalb, Kane and McHenry counties. The current law gives nominal fines to waste-hauling truck drivers for trash blown off the trucks. The truck’s company does not receive a fine. “Trash blowing from garbage haulers is a major problem, particularly for our farmers,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan, whose department has stepped up enforcement efforts. “Not only are farmers forced to invest extra time and resources to clean up the debris, but the debris, particu-

While our increased enforcement of current law has helped, it’s going to require a change in policy to get this problem under control, and we appreciate the work of Rep. Keicher to help us solve this problem and reduce the harm it’s causing.” Dale Pitstick, Kane County Farm Bureau vice president and a farmer, shared similar concerns. “On a daily basis, I see trash fly off waste trucks as they pass by my fields. It’s very disheartening to see the litter covering the landscape,” Pitstick said. “The trash is getting into our water supply, which is obviously concerning, and many of us have had to till our fields again in the fall to prevent damage to our equipment.
The current law simply isn’t doing enough, but hopefully bringing some more awareness to the problem can help make a change.” Keicher’s proposals include HB 2419, which would give municipalities the ability to require waste haulers to add a protective chute. The second proposal is HB 2420, which would create a local government grant program to fund roadside cleanup programs when haulers fail to secure their loads. The fee also would be reduced or removed for fully enclosed haulers. Keicher said he intends for the policy solutions to move forward during the legislature’s upcoming spring session. Kish College creates Desa Henn Memorial Scholarship
MALTA – The Kishwaukee College Foundation recently announced the creation of the Desa Henn Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will provide support to in-district students who demonstrate financial need, according to a news release. The scholarship was made in honor of Desa Henn, a former Kishwaukee College marketing and management instructor. Henn’s family and friends provided the scholarship’s initial endowment. “Education is very highly regarded in our family. The reason we chose Kishwaukee College for the scholarship was because our mother loved teaching there, and sharing her passion and
expertise for local retail and small business,” Nancy Plate, Henn’s daughter, said in the release. Henn taught marketing and management courses from 1979 to 1992. She also was the owner of Desa’s Vendome. Henn was prominent in retail stores such as House of Joy, Elsa’s Gift Shop and Moxie. “She loved working in the DeKalb community and was so energized by the enthusiasm of her Kish students,” Plate said in the release. “This generous donation will greatly benefit the students of Kishwaukee College. The foundation is proud to work with Desa Henn’s family to honor her legacy and support Kish students,” Kayte Hamel, executive director of the Kishwaukee College Foundation, said in the release. Post-natal care
Northwestern Medicine starts Baby Bundle Program in the new year By CAMDEN LAZENBY
clazenby@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital doctor is the reason some families of newborn babies will be sent home with a care package designed to help parents during their child’s earliest days. Dr. Natalie Roche, one of four obstetric hospitalists at Kishwaukee Hospital who assist mothers through labor and manage other obstetric emergencies out of the Emergency Room, spent almost two decades working in Geneva before starting at the Northwestern Medicine facility in DeKalb in 2023. She said she could immediately see a difference in the quality of prenatal care expecting mothers in the area received compared with her experience in Geneva. “I noticed that Dr. Natalie Roche we had a slightly different population of pregnant women than what we were seeing down in Geneva. So we see a lot of patients in labor and delivery who have issues with access to prenatal care,” Roche said. “Whether it’s transportation issues, we have a lot of patients that will start prenatal care in the Chicagoland area and then come out to the DeKalb area and then due to issues, they aren’t receiving consistent prenatal care. We also have some migrant population that’s in the DeKalb area, and then also we have patients that will come in that have not had any prenatal care.” After assessing the needs of her patients, Roche conjured up an idea to help – a bundle of supplies to take home with eligible mothers once their child is ready to leave the hospital. Last year, Roche reached out to the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Foundation about her idea and eventually received a grant to bring it to fruition. The Baby Bundle Program, as it’s called, is the result of her observations and ensuing actions. New parents typically go home with a small amount of leftover supplies – diapers, baby wipes and formula – from their delivery room in the hospital. Not all families have the means to stock up ahead of their new

I am overjoyed that we are launching this program. I’m overjoyed at the reception people had to what I thought was a very simple idea.” Dr. Natalie Roche, obstetric hospitalist at Kishwaukee Hospital loved one’s arrival, however. To that end, the Baby Bundle Program gives a large diaper bag with wipes, two onesies, two blankets and a sleep sack to families in need of supplies. Northwestern Medicine determines who qualifies for the program through a series of social and financial questions asked during a patient’s assessment. If the expecting mother meets one or more of the requirements, it’s noted on their medical record and they receive a free bundle when discharged. The program began on New Year’s Day as a celebration. “Our goal was to start the program on Jan. 1 because we thought that would be a great time. Everyone’s super excited about the first baby of the year at Kish, so I thought it would
be great with marketing to kind of like, ‘Let’s just launch this at the first of the year.’ That way everyone’s really excited,” Roche said. “We were super excited to give it away to the first baby born at [Kishwaukee Hospital in 2024].” Almost no babies were born on New Year’s Day 2024 at Kishwaukee Hospital, but Jeremiah Amiri Hernandez took his first breath with minutes to spare. Hernandez and his mother, Sophia Iverson, were still in the hospital three days after his birthday, so they haven’t had a chance to use the items in the baby bundle yet, but Iversen, a first-time mother, said it looks useful. “We had to recover, both of us. It was a crazy, crazy entrance into the world but we’re doing so much better. And we’re excited, it was like a lot of
cool things in this, a lot of useful things in there,” Iverson, 19, said. Iverson received the bundle because she was the first mother to deliver a baby at Kishwaukee Hospital in 2024, health system officials said. Now that the program has launched, future recipients will have to meet one of the requirements. Roche is OK with that. That was the reason she envisioned the initiative in the first place. “I was so super excited that this got started,” Roche said. “I feel like being at Kish for this short amount of time and then being able to kind of like look at something and say that I could do it, I was overjoyed. I am overjoyed that we are launching this program. I’m overjoyed at the reception people had to what I thought was a very simple idea.”

Sycamore Marathon Fitness closes abruptly Gym employee says Foxpointe Drive building has been sold to new owner By CAMDEN LAZENBY
clazenby@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Marathon Fitness of Sycamore has permanently closed its doors to fitness aficionados, and members of the gym said they were given no formal notice ahead of closure on Thursday, Jan. 4. According to a sign posted Jan. 4, on the front door of the fitness center, 720 Foxpointe Drive, the business was closed effective immediately. Mattie McGuire, a seven-year member of Marathon Fitness stood in the parking lot Jan. 4 and said she was not given any prior notice regarding the
gym’s closure. “Just heard through the grapevine that this was possibly happening, but only heard it two days ago. And so, as of today now it seems official,” McQuire said. “I’m very sad honestly, because I’m thinking of all the friendships that I’ve made here. I don’t know when I’m ever going to see them randomly again. But also, just the commute to my house was so convenient for me.” As of 11 a.m. Jan. 4, the facility already was closed to gym members, a Marathon Fitness employee confirmed. The worker declined an interview request but said he was not aware of the impending closure prior to arriving to work on Thursday. A social media post on Marathon Fitness’ Facebook page alleges the new building owner did not notify gym employees until Jan. 3 of the imminent closure.

Country roads in this vicinity at the present time are not in the best of travel condition and some of the farmers have resorted to the horse for transportation to the city in preference to the family automobile. With officials of the Seagrave Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Company on hand today to give the rebuilt fire truck at the fire station a thorough test, such test was made twice during the day, one from a main and the other from the Kishwaukee creek near Annie’s Woods. On account of mild weather of yesterday afternoon followed by the rain of last night, streets of DeKalb were in a slippery condition. At the intersection of North Third Street and Fisk Avenue more than one machine went on the rocks and was forced to await repairs or send for a towing outfit before resuming the journey. Two machines during the day failed to slow to a creeping gait when coming down the slight incline on Third Street and crashed into the curbing, which resulted in a couple of broken wheels. Last evening some ashes were spread over the ice but that failed to prevent some bad slides and two more wheels were cracked. Boys stationed near Pine Street last evening warned motorists of the dangerous sliding place and presented more spills than were recorded. Although the farmers are still striking, the Borden Farm Products Company of Sycamore has not been forced to stop its milk deliveries. A unified effort is being made by the farmers to enable them to obtain what they think is a fair price for their milk. Little milk has been delivered to the Borden plant by farmers around Sycamore although an occasional wagon will make the trip. It is understood that some of the milk being used by the Sycamore branch of the Borden concern is coming from Geneva. Although only eight days has elapsed during the present year, the ambulance purchased by DeKalb several month ago has so far answered 11 or 12 calls since the first day of January. As many as five calls in one day have been marked on the record kept for the city. The new machine with its up-to-date equipment has proven to be a good investment for the city in both hospital and police work.

1949– 75 YEARS AGO
Adult life has been filled in modern days with innumerable numbers, social security, auto license, telephone, draft, penal, etc., but now the ultimate has been reached with infants beginning their lives with numbers. Effective January 1, every baby born in North America is assigned a permanent number, which eventually will become his social security number. The first digit designates the country of his birth, with U.S. using 1, Canada 2 and Mexico 3. A group of Minneapolis Norwegians is sending a load of their native firewater on a boat trip around the world. When it gets back home in November 1949, they’ll drink it. The Norwegians are members of Torske Klubben, or Luncheon Club. The firewater is aquavit, a Norwegian liquor which burns going down. In olden days, Norwegians aged their favorite potable by sealing it in a keg and sailing it around the world for a year. The ship’s rocking and the climactic changes did things. The Torske Klubben shipment was sealed reverently at the 15th anniversary meeting and sent to New York to begin its journey. Of unusual interest at this time of year is the display of old calendars now on exhibit at the DeKalb Public Library. This exhibit is from the collection of Waite Embree and represents only a part of an extensive collection. The oldest calendar
in the exhibit is dated 1895 and information available indicates that this is close to the date of the first printed calendar. Contrasted to this is one for 1950. This exhibit is one of a series planned for this year by Mrs. Emily Campbell, librarian, and will remain on exhibition for about two weeks.
1974 – 50 YEARS AGO
The very young and the very old may soon occupy the same facility, the DeKalb County Nursing Home. The Children’s Learning Center has asked to rent one and one-half wings of the first floor and two wings of the second floor of the old portion of the County Home so that it can expand its child day care center. Two members of the DeKalb Planning Commission apparently favor requiring a deceleration lane in front of Spruce Hill apartments, 807 W. Taylor St., before allowing a six-building addition to the project. With the switch to year-round daylight saving time, students in most parts of the country were going to school before sunrise. Two cars of a Chicago & North Western freight train lie sprawled on the tracks east of DeKalb and south of the DeKalb airport. About 20 cars of the train derailed around 4 a.m. today, according to railroad officials who are still looking for the cause
of the accident. One train was detoured through Sycamore at 5 a.m. until one track could be cleared at the scene. A worker at the scene said it would probably take two or three days of working almost around the clock to clear the scene.
1999 – 25 YEARS AGO
The red and white Trans/VAC buses have been driving around DeKalb for 24 years, and the transportation service recently passed a milestone, giving a lift to its two millionth customer. George Ryan promised plenty on his way to the governor’s office, everything from 10,000 new teachers to clear driving at a notorious traffic snarl in the Chicago suburbs. To be keeping his promises, Ryan’s very first budget must give schools more than half of all new money while providing for initial work on the expensive road projects he promised, even if lawmakers have other pet projects they want to fund. Post Office officials are sending out a plea, don’t forget about your delivery person when you’re shoveling your sidewalk or driveway. While many people shovel a path from their door to their car or garage, it’s easy to forget that the mail carrier needs a path too. Post offices across the county are accumulating piles of undeliverable mail due to blocked boxes. – Compiled by Sue Breese

DeKalb WWII veteran turns 100 DeKalb resident celebrates a century with community, 4 generations of family By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In 1923, gasoline was 14 cents per gallon, the Walt Disney Company was founded, the first issue of Time magazine was published, Yankee Stadium opened its doors, and Paul Carlson was born in DeKalb. The centenarian was joined by four generations of his family Dec. 31 at the DeKalb American Legion Post 66, where he posed for photos and joked, “We’re breaking the camera.” A World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army stationed in Wales in the 1940s, Carlson turned 100 as he rang in the new year surrounded by family, friends and fellow veterans. “I wasn’t out to be a movie star,” Carlson told the Daily Chronicle, grinning as he sat with a steaming cup of coffee and a sandwich across from his great-great-grandson, Jayce Malone. Carlson didn’t seem to shy away from attention, however, thanking the crowd for coming and keen to offer an anecdote or witty remark when prompted.

over the weekend, Carlson’s family members said. It took a behind-the-
scenes frenzied text chain to family members around northern Illinois and a callout Dec. 30 to area veterans groups to help celebrate the century milestone. The community responded in kind, bringing with them a cheery round of “Happy Birthday,” handshakes and a chance to thank Carlson personally for his service. Legion Post Cmdr. Manuel “Manny” Olada said the post is proud to call Carlson a member. In fact, he holds a prestigious title, since Carlson has been with the Legion for 77 years. “Our longest-serving member,” Olada said. “Not to forget, we have a World War II veteran in our presence. That is amazing.” Joined by his children, son and fellow veteran Paul William Carlson and daughter-in-law Brenda Carlson; and daughter Cathy Bauer and her husband, also a veteran, Edward Bauer Jr., Carlson sat in front of a large stack of birthday cards, some sent by well-meaning strangers. other grandchildren, Jacob, Barrett and Allison, were unable to attend but there in spirit, his family said. Fellow veterans frequently came over to shake his hand, thank him for his military service or ask if he knew their parents or family. Carlson was born Dec. 31, 1923, at the old DeKalb Hospital. “My mother told me she went down there a month before and they told her she was pregnant,” Carlson said. He grew up in DeKalb with his late sister, Beverly. Their father died in 1941, in his 30s, the same year Carlson graduated from the old DeKalb High School. A fan of the Cubs, he also played baseball. Carlson said he went to Northern Illinois University for about a year before he joined the Army, deploying to Wales in the United Kingdom at the end of 1942, serving through 1943. Briefly made a master sergeant because, as Carlson tells it, his superiors needed the men, the then 20-year-old would send all his money earned in service back home to his mother. He didn’t need it anyway, he said. Items such as cigarettes were used as currency in the Army instead, wagering or playing for more in games with his fellow recruits.
Back home after the war, Carlson worked in the automobile industry, working for a short time as general manager for Brad Manning Ford, he said, and then Werner’s Auto until his retirement. Olada also remarked on Carlson’s milestone. The U.S. had two presidents in 1923, Olada recalled: Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, who took over upon Harding’s death. Carlson also shares a birthday with actor Charlton Heston from Evanston who won an Oscar for his role in “Ben-Hur,” and Gen. George Patton, who commanded U.S. troops in Germany and France during the war. “He actually worked with Gen. Patton,” said granddaughter Teena Klotz, who was credited by her family as helping organize the birthday bash. In his golden years, Carlson’s been able to celebrate his remarkable service career with others. In 2019, he joined a veterans group for a 3 a.m. departure from Beloit, Wisconsin, for the annual four-day VetsRoll bus trip to Washington, D.C. In 2015, he did an Honor Flight. Klotz, who lives in Leland with her husband and fellow Army veteran Brian Klotz who couldn’t attend because of illness, was joined by her daughter (Carlson’s great-granddaugh-

It’s been a celebratory time for the family, as Watne just got engaged to fiancé and veteran Ron Favia. For Klotz, the day was more than just a birthday party, she said. She counted it a success because Carlson was able to reconnect with many of his fellow veterans. Although he still lives independently in DeKalb – helped by generous neigh-
bors who frequently check on him, tend to his lawn and make sure he has what he needs – he doesn’t get down to the Legion Post that often anymore, Klotz said. “Honestly, the best thing about it is these connections he’s been able to make with these other fellow veterans,” Klotz said. “That’s part of the reason I wanted to have it [the party] here, this was my first choice, was because I wanted him to meet some of

Despite his own experience, longevity isn’t common in Carlson’s family, he said. Most of his family died in their 30s, save for one cousin, Lester, who lives in Arizona and is 101. He doesn’t know about a secret to life, he said, although his mother used to make “smorgasbords and sweets” every Christmas. “I hope I’m still around when you have your birthday,” Carlson said as he shook hands with yet another fellow veteran.

mhorstead@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city of DeKalb saw a number of businesses close in 2023, as owners announced retirements, plans to find more stable income, spend time with family or consolidate operations. Among those was Byers Brewing Company, 230 E. Lincoln Highway, with its owners announcing late in December that they intended to close about Jan. 31 or when the establishment’s taproom runs out of beer. The Byers family had previously cited financial constraints, according to the business’ Facebook page. Here’s a look at some of those announcements and why the establishments are no longer:
Herbal Embers
Herbal Embers, a downtown DeKalb shop known for its creative herbs and crafts, went out of business at the end of July. The shop’s owner, Daniel Watkins, told the Daily Chronicle his decision to close was due to an interest in attaining a more mainstream job, as well as family needs. July 31 marked Herbal Embers’
final day in business at 161 E. Lincoln Highway.
Blu Door Decor
In July, the home goods store Blu Door Decor closed. The establishment, 235 E. Lincoln Highway, shuttered its shop July 22. Its owner, Jana Nowak, said while she loved the store, she wanted to spend more time with her family. Blu Door Decor had called downtown DeKalb its home the past six years.
Barbed Wire Harley-Davidson
In December, Barbed Wire Harley-Davidson announced that it is shuttering its DeKalb location at 969 N. Peace Road. In doing so, the ownership is consolidating operations with the nearby Fox River Harley-Davidson in St. Charles. Barbed Wire Harley-Davidson’s final day of serving patrons from DeKalb was Dec. 15.

In October, Wired Nutrition in DeKalb went out of business.

$1.5 million roundabout planned for Plank Road By CAMDEN LAZENBY
clazenby@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – An ongoing study of the Plank Road corridor has determined a $1.5 million plan to install a roundabout is the best option for relieving congestion at the intersection of Plank, Lindgren and North Grove roads in Sycamore, a county highway official said. DeKalb County Engineer Nathan Schwartz said other options for the intersection, including putting in traffic signals or making it a four-way stop with stop signs, were considered before a roundabout was decided upon. “Both of those [putting in traffic signals or more stop signs] by the way would cause tremendous backups onto Plank Road and likely cause Nathan Schwartz more crashes. And so we looked at all of the different options available and the roundabout option was the only one that did very well to address all of the issues,” Schwartz said. According to an email from Schwartz shared with the Daily Chronicle, a consultant has already begun work on the project. The changes won’t happen anytime soon, however. Schwartz said he hopes the roundabout is completed by the end of 2025 but said it could be done as late as spring 2026. The majority of the funding for the roundabout has been acquired through the DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study, the federally designated metropolitan planning organization for the DeKalb-Sycamore-Cortland urbanized area. Schwartz said the planning organization will contribute 80% of a $1.5 million spot improvement on Plank Road for fiscal 2025. An application for a grant from the Illinois Safe Routes to School Program has been submitted to supplement the cost of the project, which Schwartz said he expects to stay near $1.5 million. Aside from traffic, Schwartz said Crawford, Murphy & Tilly – the consultant firm that’s been hired for the project – is looking into ways to make the area safer for Sycamore’s youngest commuters. North Grove Elementary School is less than a half mile from the corner
of Plank and Lindgren roads. Schwartz said finding a way to make the intersection safer for those who walk to the school was a factor in the roundabout decision. “The roundabout provides a much better access for pedestrians to be able to cross the busy Plank Road. And the reason why pedestrians have a much easier way to cross at a roundabout is because traffic has to slow down to about 20 miles an hour to go around the roundabout. So traffic is greatly slowed down,” Schwartz said. “Pedestrians only cross one direction of traffic at a time, and then there is a large center refuge item before they cross the other direction of traffic. And we’re planning some additional safety features for pedestrians.” Plank Road, among others, has for years garnered a reputation of being dangerous for area motorists. In January, two cars – including one carrying a 2-year-old – collided on Plank Road near Moose Range Road because of what DeKalb County Sheriff’s officials said were icy road conditions. Four years ago, days before Christmas 2019, a Cortland mother and her son were killed in an early morning crash after their car went off the roadway on Plank Road east of Lukens Road. Kal-el Sexton, 17, was a Sycamore High School senior, football star and homecoming king. His mother, Dalahn S. Colley, 46, was remembered as a doting parent. Those crashes, and numerous others, prompted members of the public to speak out earlier this year, demanding a safer Plank Road in Sycamore. Schwartz said the results of the Plank Road corridor study, which is expected to offer new information about a potential realignment of Plank Road, will be announced in 2024. The study’s results have not been published publicly as of Jan. 3. Any potential changes will take place north of the Plank Road intersection closest to North Grove Elementary School, however. “Based on all the different scenarios on what we might end up doing with Plank Road, this particular intersection is going to stay where it’s at,” Schwartz said. “If we do a realignment, or whatever else happens, this intersection on Plank and Lindgren is essentially going to look the same as far as what direction traffic is flowing.”
