WEEK IN REVIEW Search for DeKalb police chief down to 2 By KATIE FINLON

kfinlon@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The search for DeKalb’s next top cop is now down to two candidates, according to city officials. DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas said Feb. 22 the search committee and city officials have been making steady progress in the search and in-person interviews have been set up for the week of March 1. “I hope that, coming out of that, we’re in a position … to discuss the interviews, but then to be able to make a recommendation to the City Council,” Nicklas said. Former Police Chief Gene Lowery retired in May 2019, and Deputy Chief John

Petragallo stepped in as interim after that. However, Petragallo left the department in June 2020, retiring to pursue a career change. DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel, who headed up the department’s detective bureau, was selected in June 2020 to fill the interim role. Redel previously confirmed he applied for the permanent position. Nicklas declined to disclose who the two remaining candidates are for the position. He also declined to confirm whether Redel is one of the two remaining candidates. The update comes after city officials announced the creation of the search com-

mittee, which comprises of several local community leaders, back in December. After going through search committee job interviews, each candidate is set to field questions from DeKalb police department staff in a larger venue to accommodate social distancing protocols, Nicklas said. He also said that as city manager, he will interview both candidates separately as well. Nicklas said the goal is to have that recommendation before the council no later than the second meeting in March. “I think [the committee] is being very judicious and very methodical,” Nicklas said. “I think either candidate would do very well.”

Old Navy in DeKalb to open this spring By KATIE FINLON

kfinlon@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Despite its opening being pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Old Navy plans to open its new store in DeKalb this spring. City officials wrote in a social media post last week that work has resumed on the apparel and accessories store in Oakland Place at 2939 Sycamore Road. “After exterior and electrical work was done last summer, construction is now underway on the interior,” city officials wrote in the post. City officials previously confirmed Mid-America Management Corp. delayed the opening of any new stores, including the new Old Navy location, until this year because of the pandemic. The opening initially was anticipated to happen August or September 2020.

The former Barnes & Noble closed in 2014 and since has been temporary Halloween stores. The development plan includes the space being divided into two separate spaces to lease, with Old Navy using 12,500 square feet for its store and Mid-America looking to lease the remaining 7,000 square feet to another retailer. DeKALB – The funeral of former DeKalb mayor Bessie Chronopoulos, who served from 1997 to 2001, was held Friday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb. Chronopoulos died Feb. 21 of natural causes at her DeKalb home. She was 72. Chronopoulos’ funeral was held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church and was officiated by the Rev. Dustin Lyon. During his eulogy, Lyon described Chronopoulos as a role model and a Christian, who “lived her life in service to others.” “It’s probably going to take five or six or more people to replace Bessie and everything she did, just in our church, let alone in the community,” he said. “I think the best way to remember her is to pay it forward as she did. So this is … Bessie’s challenge to all of you: what can you do in your community, in your world, in your neighborhood, in your family, to make it just a little bit better? And in that way, you will pay honor to Bessie.” After the funeral, Chronopoulos was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in

the only child of the late Aristoteles and Stavroula (Orfanos) Chronopoulos. She came to DeKalb to study at Northern Illinois University, graduating in 1971 with a degree in elementary education. She taught at Genoa-Kingston School District 424 for 39 years as an elementary and middle school teacher until she retired in 2011. Chronopoulos was an advocate for local elections, a longtime DeKalb County poll worker and member of the DeKalb County League of Women Voters. She often attended DeKalb City Council meetings. She also was an active member in the Democratic Party. Chronopoulos was a longtime parishioner of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb, where she was a member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society and the church’s Agape ministry, serving meals to the less fortunate in DeKalb County. ON THE RECORD ... with Maddi Bodine Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com

KINGSTON – Before Maddi Bodine leaves for work each day, she thinks of a sign that hangs on the wall in her bedroom: “Be the reason someone smiles today.” Although making people smile isn’t part of her job description, Bodine, an early childhood special education teacher at Kingston Elementary School, said she enjoys “seeing how happy the students are and being able to celebrate the smallest steps and victories with them.” Bodine has been selected as a finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was chosen from a field of 708 nominations received from 67 counties in Illinois and is one of 32 finalists in the state. The award honors outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Finalists demonstrate, in their teaching and results, significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning. Golden Apple’s mission is to inspire, develop and support teacher and school leader excellence in Illinois, especially in schools-of-need. For more information about the award, visit www. goldenapple.org.

“She will try anything to get through to a student. Maddi has a passion and drive to find solutions to problems. She does not quit until she finds what will make a student tick and celebrates success even in what may seem like the smallest milestones to some people. ... As soon as [her students] walk into her room, they light up with smiles and greet her with hugs. Bodine spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about teaching and being named a finalist for the Golden Apple Award.

Milton: Are you from Kingston? Bodine: I’m originally from DeKalb.

I received my undergraduate degree in special education from Illinois State University and my master’s in literacy education with a focus on bilingual and [English as a Second Language] from [Northern Illinois University]. This is now my eighth year teaching. Photo provided

Maddi Bodine In a news release from Golden Apple, one of Bodine’s colleagues described her relentlessness in advocating for her students by saying,

Milton: Why did you become a special education teacher? Bodine: I first became interested in

teaching special education when I was working at the YCMA day camp in high school. I was working with some students with special needs, and I felt

it was my calling. I loved working with them. That’s what I love about my job now. I love how happy the kids are. I love forming close bonds with my students and their families.

Milton: How is your teaching job unique? Bodine: My job is very collabo-

rative in nature. I work closely not only with my students, but also with their families and members of my students’ teams: classroom aids, speech pathologists, social workers, physical and occupational therapists. I’m also my students’ case worker. We all work together. I wouldn’t be the teacher I am without the help of everyone else.

Milton: How has your life changed because of the pandemic? Bodine: In April 2020, I gave birth to my first child [Baylor]. After summer break and maternity leave, I returned to teaching in the fall. My husband [Jay] is a special education teacher at Kaneland High School, and we needed to find childcare for our son as we returned to in-person teaching.

eKALB – Frank Donlevy met his wife Patty working together at Village Commons Bookstore in DeKalb and the couple married Feb. 27, 1993. On Saturday, Feb. 27, on the couple’s 28th wedding anniversary, the bookstore closed permanently. “We had a lot of good memories in the store, it’s where we met and where I’ve worked for a very long time,” said Frank Donlevy, VCB’s shipping manager. “I think we’re all really sad that the store is closing. We’ll miss it, we’ll miss our coworkers and we’ll miss the customers.” VCB, located at 901 Lucinda Ave., Suite K, in DeKalb, has been selling textbooks and Northern Illinois University gear to students and the DeKalb community since April 1970. Store manager Jody Boardman said the decision to close was made for a variety of reasons. “It’s a combination of things: the pandemic is a part of it, as well as not

having students on campus and the decline of the textbook,” Boardman said. “Every semester, there’s more and more students using e-books. … One of our best sellers is our clothing, especially during football season. This year, there really was no football season.” Boardman’s father, Richard Boardman, opened VCB, and it has remained a family business. “My whole family has worked in the bookstore, including my father and mother, my three sisters and my daughters,” Jody Boardman said. “We’ve had loyal customers through the years and generations of employees and students. We will definitely miss our customers and the relationships that have grown through the years. We are very, very grateful for all of their support.” Richard Boardman worked in a downtown DeKalb bookstore after serving during the Korean War. He earned his master’s degree from NIU in the 1960s, was the bookstore manager at Holmes Student Center and then opened Village Commons Bookstore in 1970. He also served as president of the National Association of

College Bookstores. “At first, we had to alternate between selling textbooks and clothes during different times of the semester,” Jody Boardman said. “The only way to expand was up. In the late 70s, a second floor was added so we could sell textbooks year-round. … We’ve been known for our variety of items through the years, including a Hallmark card section, candles, stuffed animals, Greek gear and art supplies.” Pam Boardman, VCB’s Greek department manager and Richard Boardman’s daughter, said it’s hard to find the words to describe what the store’s closing means. “The store has been a really big part of my family’s life,” she said. “We’re extremely sad that it’s closing, but also extremely proud to have been a part of the NIU community.” Danielle Kinser worked at VCB for almost a decade. She attended NIU as an illustration major and would shop there for her art supplies. On Thursday, Feb. 25, she visited the store one last time with a friend before it closed permanently.

“I loved the store because it had a great family atmosphere, because everyone worked together as a team,” she said. “I’m really sad to see it go, and I’ll miss stopping by for items.” Ryan Licari, VCB’s textbook manager, first started working in the store 21 years ago as a college student. “I thought it was the perfect job for me because I’m a big reader and love books,” he said. “I’m sad that the store is closing because it’s an institution at NIU. Thousands of students have come here for their textbooks and apparel over the years.” Kimberly Tinsley still has two T-shirts she bought years ago from VCB when she was an undergraduate student at NIU. She graduated in 2010 and is now a teacher in the DeKalb School District. “I used to stop by the store for textbooks and NIU gear,” she said. “Sometimes I stopped by just to reminisce the college days. I’m really going to miss the store, and I’m just heartbroken that it’s closing. It was a part of the NIU experience, a part of a lot of our college memories.”

Continued from page 4 Milton: How has your classroom changed because of the pandemic? Bodine: One of the biggest changes

is not allowing students to interact and play due to social distancing rules. It’s important to teach them sharing, turn-taking and social skills, but it’s difficult when they are separated by Plexiglas, distanced and have to play with toys 6 feet apart. I miss sitting down with my students and building a blow tower. I miss playing with them in the dramatic play area, where they serve me pretend food. We can’t interact with our students in the same way. We try to make it as similar as it used to be pre-pandemic, but we also have to be mindful of COVID health and safety restrictions.

thank-you letter. I was shocked when I first opened the email notifying me that I was a finalist for the award. I thought it was just an email or some news, I didn’t expect a congratulations letter. It is an honor. I found out at the end of last semester, so it was a really great ending to a difficult year. … This school year has definitely been challenging, coupled with raising a newborn during a pandemic, and I’ve felt defeated more days that I’d like. This nomination has really lifted me up and ignited the passion in me again, just knowing someone believes in me enough to consider me for this award.

Slippery rails prevailed yesterday afternoon after it had first began to rain and from then on until late last night the street car was experiencing difficulty in making stops and keeping on time. In making some of the stops the busy car would slide along as if on casters and the motorman was continually having trouble at the slippery corners. Fortunately, there were no accidents on account of the slippery rails and today there has been no trouble at all to mar the service. Railroad men in the employ of the American Steel & Wire Company had considerable trouble yesterday after a big carload of coal had left the rails. The big car plowed along the ties for a short distance and then went into soft mud up to the journals. Considerable effort on the part of the railroad workers was necessary before the car was again on the tracks and could be delivered to the coal banks of the company. A business deal which was a surprise to everyone in Hinckley, was the sale of the Keith Pharmacy to Dr. Neubaur and Elmer Johnson which was closed Wednesday afternoon and possession given Thursday morning. Mr. Keith has been in the drug business here a number of years. He expects to leave in the near future with his family to locate in the northwest. The Great Swedish Comedian Olie Skratthult presents the famous Swedish play “Lars Anders and Jan Anders” at the Finnish Good Templar Hall on State Street. Announcement is made today that the general store at Cortland operated for many years by F. F. Schmidt and recently sold to F. F. Forn of Plainfield has again changed hands. Peter Larson who has been an employee of the store for some time, is the latest purchaser, taking possession of the business yesterday. F. F.

The two remaining charter members of the DeKalb Kiwanis Club, which observed its 50th anniversary at a banquet last night, were recognized in speeches and plaques. Dr. J. Arthur Spickerman, retired DeKalb dentist and Dr. Clifford E. Smith, who is still practicing at the age of 86 were honored. DeKalb police discovered the car showroom windows on the west and south sides of Fourth Street Motors blown out by high winds today. Wind gusts reached 60 miles an hour last night and early today according to the NIU weather reporting services. Photo provided

Schmidt spends much of his time around the place, but is “resting” as he terms it and trying to regain his health. 1946 – 75 YEARS AGO Many veterans have lost their discharge papers and are disappointed to learn that they cannot secure an exact duplicate. Service Officer Otto Babcock at the DeKalb County Court House at Sycamore will assist veterans filing for a “certificate in lieu of lost discharge,” which is the only document the Army, Navy or Marine corps will issue when the original discharge is lost or destroyed. This “certificate” does not contain all the information given on the original, and for this reason veterans are urged to record discharges and make use of a certified copy when filing for various benefits. In the early days of World War I, airplane pilots of enemy countries threw bricks at one another, hoping to hit the propeller of the other’s plane. Some planes were actually brought down this way. Entertainment of an unusual nature will be presented in DeKalb Sunday when the Barn Dance unit from WLS in Chicago makes an appearance at the DeKalb Fargo Theatre. High popularity over a long period at the Chicago station has made the Barn Dance unit one of the outstanding attractions. The show to be presented on the state will permit their friends of the air to see these famed personalities in the flesh. Two DeKalb taverns have changed ownership with Class A licenses having been issued to the new owners. A license

has been granted a partnership of Arnold F. Hovet and Leah Y. Rubenstein to operate a tavern at 147 N. Third St. The tavern there was formerly operated by Jack Gordon. The other license was issued to the partnership of Robert C. Clark and George B Noble to operate a tavern at 624 Girard St., this tavern having been operated previously by M. I. Kaiser. Announcement was made this morning that Lee Corson and his son, Jerry are preparing for the opening of Corson’s Paint Store. The new establishment will be located at 149 N. Third St. and preparations are being rushed in order that the opening may be held on March 2. Lee Corson, a resident of DeKalb for the past 25 years and active in the decorating business for 16 years, has a wide experience as he enters his new business. The new firm has secured an outstanding line of both paints and wallpapers to meet the needs of this community. The shortage of rooms for returning veterans attending, or wishing to attend Northern Illinois State Teachers College, was pointed up in an unusual manner during the past day or two when many residents of the city found an appeal attached to their local milk or cream bottles asking aid in finding room for these veterans. 1971 – 50 YEARS AGO The Daily Chronicle observes its first anniversary in the new Barber Greene Road offset facility today, and staff members celebrated the occasion by presenting the publisher with a big decorated cake.

The first invitational pistol shoot held at the new indoor range in the DeKalb Municipal Building attracted 340 police shooters on two weekends in February. Winners took home 97 trophies, sponsored by the DeKalb Police Benevolent and Protective Association. 1996 – 25 YEARS AGO Area cable subscribers may see some early afternoon interference on their favorite channels during the next week, but calling for repairs won’t help. Time Warner Cable officials say satellite communications will be subject to “sun outages” through March 9, but the interference should not last more than 15 minutes. Everyone expected the fairy tale’s sad ending. Princess Diana’s announcement that she would agree to divorce was just the final confirmation that the marriage that captivated the world could not be saved. Construction begins this summer on 96 new apartments north of Cortland, thanks to approval of a preliminary plat map by town board members of Feb. 26. About 90 Hiawatha School District parents voiced concern over quality of education issues at a public meeting last night. The most common complaints during the two-hour meeting were about a lack of communication between the school board and parents and a high rate of teacher turnover. Complaints also included concerns about lack of cleanliness in the schools and the district’s disciplinary procedures, in light of a recent fight at the grade school.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The American Legion organization (The Legion, Sons of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary) recently presented checks totaling $1,000 to help fund the restoration of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock in DeKalb. The DeKalb Rotary Club, celebrating its 100th year, has selected as its centennial project the restoration of the clock located in Memorial Park at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway. DeKalb American Legion Post 66, also celebrating its centennial year, is one of the largest and most active veterans organizations in DeKalb County. Its mission is to support and enhance the well-being of all American veterans, their families and current active duty service members. “This project is not only great for the community, but recognition for our local veterans for whom the clock is named,” Michael Embrey, vet-

Kish names Dutton Short-Term Training Award recipients THE MIDWEEK Four Kishwaukee College students have been selected as this year’s winners of the Dutton Short-Term Training Award of Excellence in their respective programs. The awards recognize students every fall and spring semester in four health-related, short-term training certificate programs. The programs prepare students to work within the health care industry in the local economy. The winners this year are: • Alyssa Wagner – Dental Assistant • Kyleigh Blanchard – Phlebotomy Technician • Marchell Papernik-Butler – Pharmacy Technician • Amanda Lancaste – Sterile Processing Technician Each student earned $500 to help offset program costs, such as tuition and other educational expenses. “I am grateful to have this accomplishment to help my family be financially stable,” Lancaste said in a news release. “The grant money helped me purchase a laptop for my online program needs.” Lancaste said she plans on taking her certification exam in February and starting her job search. Wagner also said she is now looking to start her career after completing her program. Papernik-Butler said her grant made it possible to save more for Christmas gifts for her grandchildren and pay for the state exam. Blanchard said her training will help her take the next

steps toward a career as a physician assistant. “I will be using my phlebotomy certification to begin working toward completing the required direct patient care hours that are needed to apply to graduate programs for physician assistant studies,” Blanchard said in the release. Each award recipient was chosen by a committee based on course work, classroom participation and clinical feedback. The selected students have demonstrated the highest commitment to the preparation of their chosen profession. The awards are the namesake of George and Betty Dutton, who played an important role in the town of Sycamore and across DeKalb County. George was president of the National Bank & Trust Co. from 1977 until his retirement in 1981. He and his wife Betty were active in the community and were strong supporters of education. It is the wish of the Dutton Foundation family members to continue their passion by providing support for students at Kishwaukee College. For more information on the Dutton awards, contact the Kishwaukee College Foundation at 815-825-2952 or foundation@kish.edu. To learn more about short-term training at Kish, contact Melissa Gallagher, coordinator of short-term training, at 815-825-9466 or mgallagher1@kish.edu or visit kish. edu/shortterm.

BRIEF RAMP Project SEARCH accepting applications DeKALB – Applications for the 2021-22 Project SEARCH program at Northwestern Medicine at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb are now available, according to the RAMP Center for Independent Living. Project SEARCH is a collaborative oneyear program for students with disabilities in their last year of high school. It is targeted for students who have a goal of competitive, permanent employment in the community. Each student chosen for the program participates in three 10-week internships within the hospital to help them explore

their vocational skills and abilities and eventual career path. Participating students also are receiving academic instruction in how to successfully navigate the world of work. The program operates in collaboration with RAMP, Northwestern Medicine, DeKalb School District and the Illinois Department of Human Services. RAMP’s mission is to build an inclusive community that encourages individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. For more information, visit rampcil.org/ project-search. – The MidWeek

GENOA – Nearly a year after Genoa-Kingston students last experienced five days a week in classrooms, the G-K Board of Education last week approved a plan allowing kindergarten through 12th grade students to return to in-person learning five days a week. Starting March 8, school will be held in-person from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at all G-K schools. A fully remote learning option will also be available. Grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches will be available free for all students. Superintendent Brent O’Daniell described the return to in-person learning as “exciting” and something “that the district has looked forward to for a long time.” The last day G-K students attended school for a five-day school week in-person was March 12, 2020. “We cannot offer hybrid and in-person every day at the same time,” O’Daniell said. “We’ve replaced the hybrid system with five days a week in-person learning. With the majority of our staff soon receiving the second dose of the vaccine and [COVID-19 positivity rate] numbers going down, we thought it was time to return to in-person learning.” O’Daniell also said there will be a 44 student maximum limit on all school buses and that school bus drivers and substitute teachers are needed. Forest Electric, previously of Larry Coward Electric and was a former Journeyman at the Byron Nuclear Plant. He was a member of the NRA and Ducks Unlimited. Kelly was a hard worker his entire life and was always willing to lend a hand to help fix pretty much anything. He also enjoyed life by golfing, fishing and taking trips up north, listening and singing to classic rock, rocking out at concerts, grilling and hanging out in his garage. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan and enjoyed the Detroit Tigers as well as going to NIU Huskie and Chicago Cubs games. He loved to coach baseball and softball. Kelly always enjoyed a good party. He was a practical “jokester” with a smile

and laugh that were infectious. What he really enjoyed was attending all events (near or far) with his wife, kids and grandkids.
