Vaccine cards online for NWM patients By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com Northwestern Medicine spokesperson Kim Waterman said March 24 that “due to privacy and safety concerns” the health system has stopped handing out COVID-19 vaccine confirmation cards which have private patient information on them. That doesn’t mean those who received their COVID-19 vaccination through a Northwestern Medicine clinic can’t access and print their vaccine records for proof should they need to provide it somewhere, Waterman said. “Patients [can] go to their MyChart to print out their vaccine information or they can request a paper copy the day of their appointment,” Waterman said. Waterman’s statement was in response to Shaw Local News Network readers expressing concern that they couldn’t access a vaccine card such as the

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cards issued most commonly at mass vaccination sites which show date of first vaccination, which vaccine provider received, and affirmed the person has received the vaccine. Reports of scammers taking advantage of a new popular phenomenon in which people post photos of themselves and their cards on social media has also prompted calls to beware of card sharing online. Though no stipulations yet exist, health officials ask those who’ve received the vaccine to hold onto the card in case they are asked to provide proof of vaccination in the future or have a record in case any future immunization booster is required. Patients can access their vaccine information along with a how-to guide on the website at www.nm.org/conditions-and-care-areas/covid-19-resourcecenter.

People can request a paper copy of their vaccination documentation at the vaccination clinic the day of their appointment, or if the appointment has already passed, they can find their records through the MyNM account online, Waterman said. Log in at www.nm.org/mynm or through the MyNM app. • Go to the Health tab. • Click on Immunizations. • The COVID-19 vaccination record is listed as SARS-CoV-2. To sign up for a MyNM account, go to nm.org/mynm. Corn Fest will return in 2021 after pandemic canceled 2020 event DeKALB – After going a year without due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Corn Fest officials have confirmed this year’s festival will return in August. The dates for the popular summer bash that draws thousands to downtown DeKalb for the three-day corn and music family affair are set for Aug. 27 through 29, pending the pandemic and number of COVID-19 cases, organizers said this week. The festival has been around for 43 years this year. In lieu of a 2020 festival, which had to be canceled because of the restrictions on crowd gatherings and events amid the pandemic’s peak last year and state mandates, Corn Fest organizers donated the Corn Boil corn to DeKalb County Community Gardens. Each year, Corn Fest selects a local nonprofit to raise money for, and in 2020 money raised by selling special T-shirts was donated to Opportunity House, which also will serve as the 2021 recipient, officials said last year. –The MidWeek

ON THE RECORD ... with Carme Gregory Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com SYCAMORE – Carmeda “Carme” Gregory has worked for H&R Block for more than 45 years and describes the 2020 tax year as a year “like nothing any of us have experienced before.” Gregory is a tax professional at H&R Block, 2600 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore. She volunteers with several nonprofits and has been an ambassador for the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce for more than 45 years and has served on its board of directors. She was the first woman honored by the chamber on its Wall of Fame and is a past Athena Award recipient. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 also brought about a rise in unemployment claims, three stimulus checks and new tax laws. Because of the pandemic, this year’s tax deadline has been extended from April 15 to May 17. Tax preparation at H&R Block can be completed in person face-to-face, virtually, by dropping off the necessary paperwork or by telephone. For more information or to schedule an appointment at H&R Block, call 815-758-0101. Gregory spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about how the pandemic has changed tax season this year.
Milton: How has tax preparation changed over time? Gregory: I have been with H&R Block for more
than 45 years, and there has been a lot of changes in that time. The biggest changes have been in electronic filing and online tax preparation. You now have the ability to complete complicated returns online. There have also been changes in what we
and $500 per qualified child. The second was $600 per qualified individual, both adults and children. The third, $1,400, was also per qualified individual. The stimulus payments are primarily based on tax returns and dependents in each household. Payments were also based off of [Supplemental Security Income,] [Social Security Disability Insurance] and veteran disability payments.
Milton: Do stimulus payments need to be repaid? Gregory: If you received a stimulus check legiti-
mately, it does not need to be repaid. However, there are a few interesting cases where the money does have to be repaid.
Shaw Media file photo
Carme Gregory call the “kiddie tax,” child tax credits and the addition of dependents. Years ago, you didn’t need to put in your child’s social security numbers, just the parents’. One year, late at night, a man came to me and he had eight or nine dependents. The last two were named Tom and Jerry. I made a joke, asking him if they were a cat and mouse. Straight-faced, he told me no, they were his dog and cat, and he had been claiming them for years.
Milton: Tell me about the stimulus payments. Gregory: We’ve never had stimulus payments
that large in the past. The first was $1,200 per adult
Milton: What is an example of one of those cases? Gregory: If a person died before Jan 1, 2020, they
are not eligible for the $1,400 stimulus payment. If the person died Dec. 31, 2019, or before, and the estate or family received a check for that person, that money would have to be repaid.
Milton: What’s another interesting case? Gregory: Let’s say parents divorced and they
alternate years as to when they claim Junior on their tax return. The parent that claimed Junior in 2019 receives the additional stimulus check money for him because he is listed as that parent’s dependent. He is only eligible to be claimed by one parent, whichever parent claimed him as their dependent

Milton: What are some other changes to the tax system this year? Gregory: Starting in 2021, each
child age 6 and older is now $3,000, up from $2,000, and each child younger than 6 is now $3,600, up from $2,000.
Milton: How is unemployment different this year? Gregory: There has been about
Milton: What should someone do if they have questions? Gregory: It’s best to call and ask
a 40% increase in unemployment this year. There has been more since now, under COVID relief, self-employed people could apply for and claim unemployment. This had not happened before. Under the recent law signed by President Biden, people are able to receive $10,200 in unemployment tax-free for 2020. Illinois has just recently announced they would honor this also, and $10,200 is not taxable to the state.
Milton: Have there been more scams due to the rise in unemployment claims? Gregory: There have been a lot
of scams going on. People have been receiving scam calls and have had their social security numbers, phone numbers and birthdays used fraudulently. There has definitely been an increase in that this year with all of the unemployment claims as well.
a tax professional or the IRS if you have any questions. The IRS phone lines have been jammed, though. The average wait time is 48 minutes.
Milton: Why have you stayed at your job for more than 45 years? Gregory: I have fun with my
job, and I love the staff I have, the people I work with and my clients. I have multiple generations of clients. I enjoy being with them every step of the way: marriage, new houses, cars, children, births, deaths, lottery winnings – life in general. One client said that after her mother, I was the first person she called after she received her United States citizenship. Another client came by with their newborn baby, who was less than six hours old. I love what I do, and the people I get to know through my work.

TOGETHER AGAIN Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra returns to the stage By KATRINA J.E. MILTON

ames Tucker describes rehearsing for concerts alone as “strange, not really the same.” Tucker plays viola in the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. After more than a year since their last performance, KSO has returned to the stage for concerts. “Not being able to perform as an orchestra felt like a missing piece to a puzzle,” Tucker said. “When you don’t have that piece, everything just doesn’t feel right. … I’m excited that we can perform again together in person, and I’m looking forward to playing for an audience again sometime soon.” The orchestra’s most recent concert was recorded in early March at Northern Illinois University’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall. The concert is available for free viewing on KSO’s website, YouTube and social media pages.
The concert featured performances by the orchestra’s brass, woodwinds and string sections. The program included “March for Timpani and Brass,” by Brent Heisinger, “O Magnum Mysterium,” by Giovanni Gabrieli, “Serenade in D Minor, Op. 44,” by Antonin Dvorak and “Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48,” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The orchestra’s next concert will be held virtually at 7:30 p.m. May 8. “We are offering this concert as another free gift to the community after a difficult year for everyone,” said Tamara Farrell, KSO music librarian and publicist. “We hope to resume selling tickets to an in-person audience next season.” The orchestra also is offering special concert events at area residential facilities. The March concert can be viewed on their movie screens. Event nights have already been scheduled at Oak Crest - DeKalb Area Retirement Center and Barb City Manor.
To keep in accordance with health guidelines during the pandemic, the way the orchestra performs has changed. During concerts, musicians play socially distanced while on stage. They also wear face masks with mouth slits to play their instruments and use bell covers that filter the air that comes out of their instrument without distorting or muffling the sound. The concerts are recorded in separate sections with industrial fans filtering and circulating the air during intermissions. Music director and conductor Linc Smelser said perform again on stage is a little strange, but exhilarating. “I can’t express how great it is to finally be back on stage again, performing live for an audience,” Smelser said. “When the pandemic is over, I think there will be a renaissance of people wanting live performances: music concerts, dance recitals, plays, musicals and operas. We’re here now because we have a love of music. It’s a big part of our lives, of a
lot of people’s lives, and I think we all missed it greatly this past year.” Ann Tucker, KSO president, said that even though the orchestra has not quite performed all together yet, the smaller-sectioned concerts “bring back a little bit of normalcy.” “Our musicians have been rehearsing on their own and via Zoom, and it’s just different when they’re together in person, performing on stage,” she said. David Lehman, who has played the oboe in the group for more than 20 years, said performing during a concert is an experience “like nothing else.” “Although we’re not playing together as a full symphony, we’re able to play different literature in smaller groups we might not normally play all together,” he said. “For many of us, playing music is like breathing. We have to do it. I think we’re all just excited to be playing music together again.”

many, many years and enjoy this special Easter service.
Due to the cold snap which swooped down on DeKalb Sunday night and yesterday with little warning, many automobile radiators required the service of repairmen today. The large watering trough on Sixth Street was frozen over during the night and the ice had to be broken up in the morning before it was usable. The drinking bubblers of town were not frozen on account of the water flowing continuously through the founts.
DeKalb people had their first look at gypsy outfits Saturday when a big automobile filled with traveling equipment stopped for a few minutes. The car did not stay long, however, as the police were quickly on the trail and as soon as the necessary purchases were made they were told to keep moving. This is the first of such traveling squads to show up here, but as soon as the weather begins to warm up a bit, there will be plenty of them along, going from one end of the country to the other and in all cases, traveling via automobile.
In the big parade at Sycamore Sunday when nearly 200 Templars participated including many DeKalb members, there were four men in line, who have a record both as to membership and activities at such an age. According to a DeKalb man who was in the parade Sunday, there were four men in uniform who had passed the age of 82 and were able to march along with the remainder of the younger knights. It is rather unusual to see men of such an age in a parade, but these men, it is understood have been members of the Templar organization for
1946 – 75 YEARS AGO Port Manager Darrel Carls made the first landing at the Sycamore Community Airport Thursday afternoon. Land for the new field which will be located just east of the city park on Route 64 was purchased this month by the Leader Oil Company of Sycamore and leased to Mr. Carls for development. One hundred twenty-six acres of the Lee and Sheeler farms were bought by Leader Oil, and approximately 90 acres will be used for the landing field proper, with hangers and maintenance buildings to be built on
the remaining space. Ten acres have been reserved by the company for the construction of a super-service station. For a period of about four hours yesterday afternoon residents of Kirkland and the surrounding area were without electrical power. The trouble was caused by a transformer which burned out. Although it was fortunate that it happened in the daytime, it caused considerable inconvenience. The hemp mill was forced to close down because of the power cutoff and offices and homes are without lights. Farmers in the community stated that they were hampered because most of them have electric milkers and water pumps and the power went off just before milking time. Excavating activities always prove to be of interest to a large number of spectators and work on North Third Street this week is no exception. Large crowds have been watching the excavating work for the new theater building to be located on North Third Street on the west side of the street in the middle of the clock and also the work on the northwest corner lot at Third and the highway. Those in the business district and in that vicinity usually stop and watch
the activities for a few minutes before proceeding on their way. Advent of spring in Sycamore has brought to light plans which are being made by the Ideal Industries Inc. for a recreation field to be used by employees of the company. Three acres south of the factory buildings are to be seeded and lined for various sports. A baseball diamond is to be laid out on the field, and courts for volleyball, horse shoe pitching, and shuffleboard are planned. The recreation field will be used by the Ideal employees during rest periods, lunch hours and after work. 1971 – 50 YEARS AGO Approximately 1,000 customers were affected by an electrical power blackout early Sunday morning, caused apparently by a raccoon who came in contact with a 12,000 volt structure. The structure is located at the Commonwealth Edison’s Glidden power sub-station located just north of the General Electric Company. Now that the worst winter-like weather hopefully is gone, work on the extension of Annie Glidden Road is resuming. The road is being extended south from Lincoln Highway to Taylor Street.
DeKalb Rotary marks 50 years. One of the first projects sponsored by the DeKalb Rotary Club was in 1923, when the first outdoor swimming pool in the county was opened. The pool was located on South Malta Road, the present location of Lions Park. The Chicago Tribune ran a feature article at the time, calling it the world’s largest outdoor pool. 1996 – 25 YEARS AGO Kirkland-Hiawatha High School students held a brief walk-out this morning as school started. Both Hiawatha Superintendent Ken Brooks and high school Principal Larry Kernagis said the reason for the walk out was the non-renewal of a second-year coach, who is also a teacher at the school. Not too many businesses survive 100 years. One store in Sycamore, Henderson’s Department Store, has not only survived to see that milestone, it has grown. Community leaders, employees and current company president Jerry Henderson marked the event in a ceremonial tree-planting outside the courthouse in Sycamore marking the impact the store has had on the city. The Sycamore School District is trying to buy land to build a new high school next to the existing one. The school board voted to make an offer to buy about 25 acres of land to the north and west of the existing high school, between Route 64, Peace Road and Johnson Avenue.

1921 – 100 YEARS AGO Wes Concidine, night desk sergeant of the police department also custodian of the Memorial clock, is going to cease smoking cigarettes or carry a suitable tray on which they may be placed hereafter. Concidine gave the clock a going over this morning replacing a couple of burned out lights and oiled up the machinery. Before going up on top to replace the lights he lighted a cigarette and as he started up the ladder placed it on his overcoat until his work was done. Fortunately, Fire Chief McEvoy was on the job but before the fire extinguished, the overcoat was damaged to some extent.

kfinlon@shawmedia.con DeKALB – Two of the busiest roads within the City of DeKalb will be resurfaced this year following a City Council vote. DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas said the project to redo large parts of First Street and Taylor Street was delayed from a year ago because of uncertainty in funding caused by COVID-19. Since the city seems to be in a better financial position now with its reserves, he said, the work now will be done this year. “If you’ve driven these areas, it looks like the coat of many colors – lots of patches, lots of bad road on the curb lines and there’s really not much to patch anymore and the patches aren’t going to hold,” Nicklas said. “So I think residents who travel this – and quite a few do every day – will be very pleased if we elect to go through with this.” DeKalb City Council voted unanimously on March 22 to approve the $1.25 million in street repairs contract-
ed by Curran Contracting Inc., along with change orders not to exceed a total project cost of $1,283,673. Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane was absent from the meeting. According to a City of DeKalb social media post on March 23, First Street will be resurfaced from Augusta Avenue south to Taylor Street, with work also going west on Taylor to near Lions Park. There also will be work done on South Seventh and Sixth streets. Nicklas said there were three total bids that came to the city for the proposed project. He said Curran Contracting was the lowest bidder for the project. “This is an ambitious project,” Nicklas said. Nicklas said there also are repairs to be had on the manholes for the sanitary system and the estimated cost for those repairs is about $83,000. Overall, Nicklas said before the council vote city staff recommends the Photo provided council to approve the proposal. “We’re excited at the opportunity to This portion of First Street, north of Lincoln Highway, will be resurfaced as part of this year’s street repairs. get this done,” Nicklas said.

KVAL members to present spring works 50th Northern Illinois Art Show scheduled for June 5-6 THE MIDWEEK SYCAMORE – The Kishwaukee Valley Art League will present its Create With KVAL challenge of “What’s Hatching in Spring” during its April 1 general meeting. KVAL members will present and discuss art pieces they created with a spring theme. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Gallery On State, 322 W. State St. in Sycamore. The public is invited to attend the meeting and COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Bill Mitchell is the KVAL Artist of the Month. For the last several years, he has focused on wood sculpture, including painting with techniques he developed. Wood grains, colors and textures are natural, which he likes to contrast with carving and then adding modern industrial/commercial colors in hard edge linear forms and bright-
er colors. Mitchell’s show is now on display in the front window of Gallery On State. KVAL’s second art class will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. April 17 at Gallery On State. Artist Alec Rossiter will show how to make a gourd birdhouse. All materials will be provided by KVAL. Students will create their own design and will leave the class with a finished birdhouse. Cost for the class is $35. Those interested can stop by the gallery to register for the class. The 50th Northern Illinois Art Show, held annually on the courthouse lawn in downtown Sycamore, is scheduled for June 5-6. While the deadline for interested artists has passed, there are a few spaces still available and late applications will still be accepted. KVAL is committed to promoting local artists and dedicated to the development of upcoming artists in the Kishwaukee Valley area. Hy-vee and Waste Management are patron members of the organization. Furnaces for $941. With Off-Season Air Conditioning
If you qualify, local utilities may offer up to $575 in rebates towards your new system**
Dear Neighbor:
I have great news for your wallet if your furnace is over 12 years old. Allow me to explain... Every year, the months of February, March & April can be slow for my business. I employ great people and want to keep them working during these long, slow months. That is why I’ve come up with a Win-Win Situation for both of us. How To Get A Furnace For Peanuts
If you are interested in a new heating/cooling system (but only if one of the four sizes I have will fit your house, of course), I am “giving” you the furnace and all I ask for is the $941 in labor & material costs for installation, when you buy an A/C unit. They are brand-new Deluxe Models. They are NOT the seconds or “blems” or standard “builder” models. They are factory-fresh furnaces and air conditioners and have a full 10-year factory warranty. Absolutely No Obligation
After I completely explain the installation, there is absolutely no obligation. If you decide you don’t want to take advantage of the spectacular savings... That’s OK. You Can Buy With NO Cash

NIU, DCNP collaborate on third nonprofit study THE MIDWEEK DeKalb County has a robust nonprofit sector employing 7% of the total workforce. Yet, COVID-19 has had a noticeable financial impact with nearly 82% saying they have had to cancel fundraising events due to the pandemic. A new study explores nonprofit organizations based in DeKalb County and provides a glimpse at their funding, programs, and the impact of COVID-19. The Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies at Northern Illinois University and the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership collaborated on the study, which provided two NIU graduate students with valuable hands-on research and nonprofit experiences. “The original idea for this project came from DCNP members back in 2013,” Ben Bingle, DCNP director, said in a news release. “This is the third DeKalb County Nonprofit Study and it is as relevant as ever for nonprofit staff and board members who want resources to help them make informed decisions about their organizations.” Previous studies were completed in 2014 and 2017. The three-part series was supported by funding from the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation. The study consisted of an electronic survey that was sent to nonprofit representatives in September 2020. Data collection lasted three weeks, followed by analysis and reporting of the results. The survey generated a response rate of about 40%.

Registration underway for Little Lambs Preschool THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – As with many organizations, it has been a year filled with learning curves for Little Lambs Preschool. Like other schools, the preschool at 511 Russell Road in DeKalb, closed its doors to in-person learning in March 2020. Since many preschool families were struggling with the financial effects of the pandemic, the church council at Immanuel Lutheran, with recommendation from the Board of Christian Education, voted to offer tuition reimbursement to all families. The council also continued to support the staff with full pay. With financial support of the church and donations from many preschool families, the staff worked creatively to continue to reach out to students and their families through the remainder of the school year. Staff used many creative avenues, including Zoom, emails, U.S. mail, learning packets and notouch hand delivered special activities for various themes including Easter. The school celebrated graduation in May with personalized yard signs and front yard teacher visits for each child who was moving on to kindergarten. The 3-year-old classes were invited to a drive-by send-off to close out the year.

school year continues, the school has welcomed back additional students, with current classes at near capacity. They look forward to a more traditional close to this school year, with in-person graduation and hopefully some outdoor family festivities. Looking toward fall 2021, Little Lambs Preschool is gearing up to continue to move forward. While continuing to operate under CDC and DCFS guidelines, plans are in place to reopen all classrooms with a full staff in the fall. Registration for fall is open. Little Lambs is a Christian preschool, established in 1996 and licensed by the state of Illinois. It is not a daycare center, but rather a traditional preschool, offering classes to prepare children ages 3 to 5 for the academic years ahead. THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – OC Creative of DeKalb has launched a new scholarship with the Kishwaukee College Foundation for students interested in pursuing a career in the creative arts. According to a news release from Kishwaukee College, students pursuing careers in graphic design, marketing, advertising, videography, photography, writing or other creative fields could be eligible for the $500 scholarship. “Building up DeKalb County should include supporting students and their career aspirations. Sometimes all it takes is someone to see talent in you for that motivation to kick in,” Brian Oster, creative director and president of OC Creative, said in the news release. “I can distinctly remember one teacher in high school providing that for me, and, looking back, I can
see that’s when I first started on my creative path. The hope of all the OC team is to see creativity flourish – in students, in an organization’s marketing, and in our community.” Applicants must be graduates of a high school within the Kishwaukee College district. Students also must have completed 24 credit hours and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Eligible applicants will be asked to answer questions regarding career goals and what inspired them to pursue a career in the arts. Portfolios of creative work are encouraged. Scholarship applications for the OC Creative Scholarship, along with other scholarships, will be accepted through March 31. Students can apply at www.kish. edu/kcfscholarships. For information, contact the Kishwaukee College Foundation at 815-825-2952 or foundation@kish.edu.
