Genoa business burns down in Monday morning blaze By KATIE FINLON
kfinlon@shawmedia.com GENOA – A fire that burned down a commercial property, C & C Painting, in Genoa will have to be torn down and rebuilt from damage caused, local fire officials said. According to a Tuesday social media post from Genoa-Kingston Fire Protection District, fire officials were dispatched at 5:01 a.m. Monday to commercial property at 122 N. Emmett St. in Genoa for a possible structure fire. “Upon crew’s arrival they were met with heavy fire conditions,” fire officials wrote in the post. There were no injuries reported for civilians or firefighters from the incident, according to the post. All crews cleared the scene at about 10:30 a.m. March 29. Multiple mutual aid companies arrived on scene to help bring the fire under control. Those departments included those from Kirkland, Sycamore, Boone County, Maple Park, Pingree Grove, Malta, Elgin, Hampshire, DeKalb, Belvidere, Marengo, Huntley, Cortland, Cherry Valley and Rutland Dundee, according to the post. Genoa-Kingston Fire Chief Bruce Kozlowski said April 1 it’s still unclear what caused the fire and the fire protection district called in the Illinois State Fire Marshal this week. He said fire officials believe after preliminary investigation that the fire started toward the cen-

Kozlowski said the rest of the buildings that sustained damage were used for storage. “It’s still under investigation,” Kozlowski said. However, Kozlowski said the cause of the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious or caused by a criminal act, like arson.

“We have no reason to suspect foul play or anything of that nature,” Kozlowski said. Kozlowski said the building owner’s insurance company is still investigating as well. He said he’s not sure what the monetary loss amount is looking like. “Structurally, the building is a total loss,” Kozlowski said. “They will have to tear that down and replace it. ... There’s nothing left to repair.”

THE MIDWEEK “Arts in Action,” a new virtual exhibit developed by the DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum, examines the history of race relations in DeKalb County with the assistance of nine visual artists and five poets. The work is presented through the themes of fear, exclusion, community and hope. Community members have participated by telling their stories or by assisting with research. The two organizations are working together to provide online tours of the display, led by Michelle Donahoe, executive director of the DeKalb County History Center, and Brian Reis, executive director of the Ellwood House Museum. “We miss seeing our visitors in person, but offering a virtual tour provides an opportunity to explore the topics introduced in the exhibit, as well as the artistic interpretations of these themes,” Donahoe said in a news release. “Discussion will include research surrounding the exhibit, artist’s work, and explore what’s next.” “We know our work on this topic is just a beginning, and we’d like to hear from more people of color and learn about their stories of living and growing up in DeKalb County,” Reis said in the release. “This information will be helpful in the creation of a physical exhibit at our two museums later this year.”
Donahoe and Reis also will be available to answer any questions. “Arts in Action” is designed to be a platform for community members and artists to tell their stories, especially for those whose voices have not always been heard. The project goal is to build a stronger community by sharing, listening and understanding the stories of everyone in the community. The work will be ongoing. A virtual exhibit of the research and the artists’ works began March 31, with related programming being offered to continue the conversation. A gallery exhibition is scheduled for late 2021. To see the exhibit, visit dekalbcountyhistory.org, and to register for an online tour scroll to the calendar at the bottom of the home page. An online tour is available at 11 a.m. April 14. Small groups also can schedule a guided tour for a fee. For more information, call 815-895-5762 or email michelle@dekalbcountyhistory.org. This project was funded through a Healing Illinois Grant from the State of Illinois Department of Human Services and the DeKalb County Community Foundation in partnership with Family Service Agency, City of DeKalb, Ellwood House Museum, DeKalb County History Center and Northern Illinois University to help co-create a culture of belonging in the community. A full list of belonging projects can be found at cityofdekalb.com.

Hopkins pool in DeKalb to reopen this summer By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com
DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District announced last week that the Hopkins Park Aquatic Center, 1403 Sycamore Road, will be open for the 2021 season from May 29 through Aug. 15. Although the aquatic center will open, there will be capacity restrictions and safety guideline regulations in place. All visitors must wear a face covering while on deck. Visitors are encouraged to bring a chair because deck lounge chairs will not be available to minimize the disinfection schedule between group time slots. Season passes will not be sold. Daily admission entry will be available in 90-minute reservation time slots for both the kiddie pool and general swim area, which includes the slides and diving wells. Reservations will be available for registration in a rolling two weeks before each available date, starting May 15. All visitors will be required to make a reservation. Walk-ins will not be permitted. A 90-minute time slot will cost $5 for residents and $6 for nonresidents. If there is inclement weather, households will be given credit to use on a future reservation date or they will be

tions that need to be in place are less than ideal, but they are essential in continuing to keep the public safe,” Greg Bruggeman, superintendent of recreation, said in a news release. “Last summer, we were only able to open the kiddie pool area, so we are grateful that we get to expand aquatic offerings and fully open Hopkins Pool this summer. It’s a step in the right direction as things start to look a little more like normal.” Due to capacity restrictions, summer swim lessons will take place at Huntley Middle School’s pool at 1515 S.
Fourth St. Park district staff is seeking individuals ages 15 and older to join the aquatics team as seasonal lifeguards and swim instructors. More details about available positions can be found online at www.dekalbparkdistrict. com/employment-opportunities. The aquatic center’s concession stand will be open daily. Private pool rentals will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Select aquatic special events are planned to be held this summer, including extended Thursday evening swim times in July for Hot Summer Nights and the annual cardboard boat regatta on July 31. “We are so excited and incredibly happy to reopen the pool this year,” said Katie Drum, marketing coordinator. “Going to the pool is a tradition for so many families. The swimming pool is synonymous with summer. We’re looking forward to offering relief from the summer heat and for things slowly getting back to normal.” For more information about COVID19 restrictions, pool rules, pool rental pricing or to make a pool reservation starting May 15, visit www.dekalbparkdistrict.com/hopkins-pool or call 815-758-7756.
Sycamore pool to reopen amid uncertainty about its future kmilton@shawmedia.com
SYCAMORE – After being closed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sycamore community pool is planned to open this summer, although park district officials are uncertain of the 38-year-old pool’s future. “We are planning on re-opening the pool following IDPH guidelines and with reduced occupancy at the pool this summer,” said Sycamore Park District Executive Director Jonelle Bailey. A recent survey was sent to Sycamore residents soliciting input for the pool’s future. As part of the park district’s Sustaining the Legacy: 2025 master planning initiative, the district is now weighing whether it’s time to close the pool at Sycamore Community Park, 940 E. State St., within the next five years. A 2019-2020 survey showed that 64% of Sycamore households surveyed have not visited the pool in the past two years, the district reported, and satisfaction of the pool was the lowest of any district facility. According to park district data, the aging facility’s infrastructure and mechanics have “already outlived industry lifespans,” which means the cost to upkeep the pool pulls a “dispro-

Another roadblock for pool improvement, according to the park district, is that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources strictly prohibits development of infrastructure within floodplains. The Sycamore Park District is forming a focus group, which Bailey described as “a group of community members helping us decide which direction to go and what options to make regarding the future of the pool.” Bailey said the pool has outgrown its
space. “When we asked the community what requests they have for the pool, they mentioned a lazy river and slides,” she said. “We cannot expand there or rebuild in that location because it’s built on a flood plain and there are Department of Natural Resource limitations. A focus group needs to help decide if the community is interested in relocating the pool, how the money will be raised and where a new location would be. We need community feedback.” For more information about the Syc-

Summer plans Pool admission is free for children ages 3 and younger, $6 for residents ages 4 and older, $9 for nonresidents ages 4 and older, $3 for lap swim for residents ages 14 and older and $6 for lap swim for nonresidents ages 14 and older. The swimming pool also can be rented from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with a 2-hour minimum rental. Cost is $130 per hour for 50 people. For more than 50 people, the cost increases $2 for each person. All pool rentals must be booked in person at the Community Center’s service desk, 480 S. Airport Road. Sycamore’s splash fountain, located at on Legacy Campus, 480 S. Airport Road, will open for the season May 29. Reservations will be required and can be made online or in person. One 75-minute time slot per person is allowed each day, with 25 people maximum for each time slot. Admission is free for children ages 11 months and younger and $3 for residents and $5 for nonresidents.

Sycamore family honors late infant son with acts of kindness By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com
SYCAMORE – Tyler and Katy Fillipp of Sycamore are honoring the memory of their 5-month-old son Beckam by leading with kindness and urging others to pay it forward. Beckam North Fillipp was born Sept. 3, 2019. His birth, along with his older brother Brixon’s, was made possible through surrogacy. “We struggled with infertility, and Beckam’s name honors our sister-inlaw, who was our surrogate, and the incredible selfless gift she’d given us twice,” Katy Fillipp said. “Her middle name is Rebecca, and Beckam means ‘of Rebecca’s home.’ A lot of love made Beckam possible in our lives.” Beckam was found unresponsive at daycare and died Feb. 3, 2020. “When he passed away, our world and our hearts were shattered,” Katy Fillipp said. “Because love was such a focal point for our family, we knew the only way forward through this horrific loss was with love.” To honor Beckam’s memory, the family placed Buddy Benches at South Prairie Elementary School, where he would have attended. Buddy Benches are a way for other children to include a child who is feeling left out. A lonely child can simply go and sit on the bench. Other children then see this child and go and invite them to join in play. The quote they chose for Beckam’s Buddy Benches was, “One friend can change your whole life.” Their extended family has helped others by handing out gift cards outside Aldi, holding a month-long clothing drive for the homeless, collaborating with a baker to benefit a pay-what-you-can food truck and hosting a food drive in Geneva. On Beckam’s birthday, Sept. 3, the family took cookies to the DeKalb and Sycamore fire and police departments and took sandwiches to the emergency department at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. Katy Fillipp said she “felt it was important to show gratitude to their communities’ first responders as a way to lead with love on such a sorrow-filled day.” Since November, the family has partnered with local businesses to “Pay It Forward with Love” on the third of each month. “The events are for anyone that

The food drive collected 1,187 pounds of food, 92 pounds of baby items, 69 pounds of personal items, 40 tubes of toothpaste, 61 toothbrushes, 137 rolls of paper towels, 566 rolls of toilet paper and $8,365 in monetary donations. For each monthly event, the Fillipp family donates $100 to a local business. The money is used by the business to offer a special. When partnering with Coroco Coffee Roaster Collective, customers received one free drink per order. Eggspress and Pub 64 matched the family’s donation and offered $5 off
each order until the donation ran out. The Dirty Bird partnered with the family on April 3 and matched their donation as well and offered $5 off each order until the donation was used. “When Katy contacted me, I thought the message of honoring her son was really powerful and a great way to spread positivity even with such a great loss,” said Karen Weckerly, president and CEO of Coroco. “We had many positive comments and one customer said they’d be interested in doing something similar to pay it forward for someone they’ve lost.” When Katy Fillipp stopped by VIP Cleaners to speak about a future partnership, owner Min Kim said he would offer a deal on the third of every month for a year: the first 20 orders of $5 or more will receive $5 off. “I just wanted to help,” Kim said. “I have kids, too, and I could only imagine how difficult it’d be to lose your child. It’s a nice way to honor
the memory of her son. I think everyone needs a little help every now and again, and it’s important to step up and take care of others as much as possible.” Tyler Fillipp said the main goal of the Pay It Forward with Love events is “to make sure Beckam’s name is not forgotten.” “For us, that’s the biggest thing,” he said. “The events help us remember his name and him, that he was real and was here. It’s a reminder of him.” Tyler Fillipp said his family didn’t expect the outpouring of support from the community and businesses. “We thought the events would be a way to give back and spread joy, but the fact that everyone is stepping up with events and donations really blows us away,” he said. “If we can spread one message, it’s to be kind and spread love.”

In the future, the Fillipp family hopes to start a 501c3 nonprofit organization and hold charity events. “We hope to one day provide scholarships within the community to kids that are kind and have big hearts, not necessarily the smartest or most athletic,” Tyler Fillipp said. “With how short Beckam’s life was, we realized how short life is. It takes just as much effort to spread hate as it does to spread love and kindness.” “We realized there was no other way forward than a path forged in love,” Katy Fillipp said. “It has been truly amazing to see the heart and soul of the community come together to want to spread a message of love. We are so grateful and thankful.” Referencing the food drive the Fillipps held for the Spartan Food Pantry for the month of February, Katy said “Each dollar donated or canned good donated was another person that learned of Beckam and will remember him. Hopefully they will choose to continue his legacy by being kind and leading with love.” Participants can use the hashtag #bnflovedbeyondmeasure to share their photos on social media of acts of kindness and paying it forward. Any act of kindness or love is welcomed by the Fillipps.

Believing that an expense of some $200 or more monthly will be eliminated, the Joseph brothers have installed a complete laundry outfit in connection with Hotel DeKalb. The boys say that the rest of the equipment arrived the last of the week and the laundry is now in full operation. The hotel men are not making any effort to take care of any business other than the linens about the institution, which they say, is considerable in a month’s time. Electric Park, better known this year as the Lily White Gardens, are to open this week with a big benefit party for a member of the DeKalb Musicians’ local, who, it seems has been having his share of misfortune and then some. Bob Murphy, who has charge of the Gardens this year says that there will be something doing there all summer, and he promises some big picnics before the year is over. Many inquiries have been heard from people as to the reason the bubbler fountain at Sixth and Lincoln Highway is still out of commission. During the course of a day many people stop there with the purpose of getting a draught of cold water and find the fountain out of order. It is probable that the bubbler will be repaired sometime within the next week or two and all then will be in working order. Lewis & Palmer, music house, under the supervision of Clarence Palmer, has taken over the entire basement under the first floor of the store and devoting it to display and repair room purposes. C.J. Holderness, the electrical contractor, who has offices in the building, has removed his equipment to his home or the time being, probably opening up a downtown store later on.
1971 – 50 YEARS AGO Sycamore City Council agreed last night to advertise applications for the fulltime position of city engineer, despite objections from two aldermen that job title and description should be decided on before applications are asked for. Free chest x-rays will again be available to DeKalb County community residents when the mobile chest x-ray unit of the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association of North Central Illinois begins the 1971 survey schedule this month.

1946 – 75 YEARS AGO The Paw Paw correspondent for the Chronicle realized one of her fondest dreams Tuesday morning when she was given a plane ride in a Piper Cub, owned by a Decorah, Iowa, man. They were en route from Iowa to Aurora and because it was getting too dark to continue on with their flight, they settled their plane in the Mead backyard. They were invited to remain at the Mead home overnight and when they rose the next morning they invited Miss Mead to go up in their plane. An agreement was reached last evening at a meeting at Rochelle between the California Packing Corporation and the Canners, and Food, Tobacco, Agriculture and Allied Workers Union of America. A wage increase of fifteen cents per hours was granted regular workers and twelve and one-half cents per hour for seasonal workers. Cleaning and sewing of oats in Clare is being speeded to complete the farmers’ busy spring. The hum of tractors is in the air from dawn until late sundown as the soil is prepared and seeded. An airplane hangar belonging to Olivier Westphal located on the farm in Pierce Township was blown over and wrecked yesterday morning about 8 o’clock, but fortunately the plane was not damaged. Neighbors noted the freak accident when the wind picked the hanger off its
foundation, flipped it in the air and then dropped it. The roof of the sheet metal hanger was badly damaged and the entire structure about ruined. Announcement was made this morning that the long established Herr’s Clothing Store of DeKalb has changed hands. The establishment owned by Isaac and Mandel Herr has been sold to Frank-Phillips, Inc., and the new owners are taking immediate charge of the store. Frank Blitzbau and Phillip Schmidt of Chicago, the new owners, have just been released from the armed serviced, and have purchased the DeKalb store from Mr. Herr and his son. The establishment was opened in DeKalb by Isaac Herr in 1902 and rapidly expanded. In 1915, Mr. Herr’s son, Mandel, became associate in the firm and the store has increased in size and number of lines of merchandise offered. Pvt. Erich Gellert, German prisoner of war, who escaped Wednesday at Camp Grant by hiding under a pile of dirty clothes in a laundry truck, was apprehended yesterday on a farm near Milwaukee. He was captured on a farm twenty miles north of the city where he had obtained employment. He had ridden in the laundry truck to Rockford, taken a bus to Chicago and then to Milwaukee. He stated that he had financed the trip with $20 he had found behind a radiator in the barracks.
Some 17 newspaper delivery tubes and rural mailboxes were piled up at the entrance to the Daily Chronicle plant on Barber Greene Road during the night Friday. Vandals apparently ripped the tubes and boxes from posts in the nearby countryside and deposited them at the doorway as a prank. To help children develop better bicycle driving habits, DeKalb’s Jefferson School recently operated a bike clinic. Three practice sessions for bicycle driving skills have been conducted on the school parking lot, with Mrs. Barbara Ridulph, physical education teacher, checking the youngsters. 1996 – 25 YEARS AGO The Jungle tavern and liquor store have been sold, raising hopes among city and police officials that years of problems with underage drinking will be solved. Police recovered parts of a pipe bomb Wednesday after it was apparently detonated on the grounds of Littlejohn Elementary School. Police said they received calls from residents about 1 a.m., reporting a loud explosion or a gun shot in th earea. Officers arriving at the scene found fragments of a bomb that had been detonated inside a piece of playground equipment on the west end of the campus. Demolition started yesterday in preparation for a new strip mall on the corner of State and Walnut streets. The property owners are planning to construct a 10-store strip mall. 1921 – 100 YEARS AGO Will and Myron Duffey today put out their popcorn wagons, Myron having the same lease on Lincoln Highway next to the Fisk garage and Will securing permit to place his wagon next to the Manos shoe shinning parlor. When the latter wagon was hauled to the spot this morning there was some little excitement for the time being as Manos objected strenuously to the placing of the wagon there. The police department was called and an officer remained there until the battle was finally settled and the popcorn wagon is still where Will Duffey first put it this morning.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The DeKalb Hometown Hero banners program will return to downtown DeKalb for Memorial Day. The program is a joint project of the DeKalb American Legion Post 66 and the City of DeKalb. It was created to pay tribute to the brave men and women from DeKalb who are serving, have served, or have given their life to our country in one of the United States Armed Forces. “Each year we have an opportunity to add additional banners as part of this project,” American Legion Commander Daniel Gallagher said in a news release. “These banners feature the service member’s name, photo image, military branch and rank.” The Hometown Heroes banners will be displayed on Locust Street, Second Street and Third Street in downtown DeKalb. This year will be a special time as it is the 100th anniversary of the DeKalb American Legion. The deadline to be considered for 2021 is April 10. The goal is to have the 59 previous veteran banners and new banners ready to hang by Memorial Day. The individual to be recognized must reside or have resided in the city of DeKalb and call DeKalb their hometown. Individuals must have served in any of the following branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard or Coast Guard. They also must meet one of the following conditions: • Currently, be an active service member • Be an honorably discharged veteran (DD214 required) • Died in the line of duty To register for a banner, request and complete the application form and the release statement. Return the completed forms along with the requested information and payment (once ap-

Rail barrels are available for purchase through the DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation District and Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District.
Beginning April 10, kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in person or through curbside pick-up at the library (while supplies last). There are two kits to choose from: an easy kit containing parsley and lettuce (for the novice gardener), and a kit containing two kinds of tomatoes (for those who might be a bit more experienced with
plant care, since tomatoes can be a bit finicky). At 10 a.m. April 10, the library will host a Facebook Live event to talk about these kits, how to plant the seeds, and the proper way to prepare seedlings for the garden. No registration is needed to attend the event, and it will be recorded so you can watch it again later.
DeKALB – Gavin Wilson and his best bunny Nelson will read a book and answer questions about how money works, how to save it and how to spend it. Visit the DeKalb Public Library for a Smart Money Initiative Story Time at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 13. This workshop is held as part of Smart Money Initiative DeKalb County. It is free and open to all. Visit the “DKPL Stories @ Home” Facebook page to request access to the story time Facebook group. This can be done at any time before the program starts. After you have been added to the group, you can use the same link to watch the story time live or view past story time videos. This Facebook group is the same one that the library uses for virtual stories at home and bedtime stories. New restaurant has people cruising to Genoa By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com
GENOA – Word has gotten out about a new DeKalb County restaurant that has people cruising to Genoa for its food. Cruisin’ Genoa, 313 W. Main St. in Genoa, opened Oct. 8. The venture is Robert Lange’s second restaurant. His first one, Cruisin’ Gilberts, is located in Kane County. “From the day we opened our doors, this place has taken off,” Lange said. “We didn’t know what to expect because we opened during the middle of the pandemic and the strengthened restaurant restrictions. It was extremely hard, but we made it through. The town has been unbelievably supportive. We keep hearing that it’s exactly what Genoa needed.” Assistant manager Christina Allison said she was happy to meet custom-
ers in person during dine-in service after months of carryout and delivery. “We had regulars right away, and it’s nice to have them come in, sit down and eat in our restaurant,” she said. “It’s nice to interact with people again. Genoa is a great town and the people have been great.” Cruisin’ Genoa is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will have later hours in the spring. The restaurant features its own delivery service, carryout and dine-in. Video gaming also is available. Cruisin’ Genoa has specials every day, including Taco Tuesday with an additional Mexican menu, corned beef on Wednesday, fish fries on Friday and steaks on Saturday. The Friday fish fries offer five different fish, a lobster combo, a shrimp combo and a catch of the day that
changes weekly. Saturday is the only night steaks are served. Steak options include prime rib, ribeye, New York strip, Kansas City bone-in strip, porterhouse, T-bone, filet mignon, filet with lobster, filet with grilled shrimp and lobster with grilled shrimp. All of the steaks are certified Black Angus beef. All entrees include two sides: a choice of soup, salad, cole slaw, wild rice, vegetables, baked beans, baked potatoes, french fries, homemade chips, mashed potatoes, potato pancakes and baked sweet potato. “We offer specials on different days so that our food and the ingredients are the freshest it can be,” Lange said. Lange said what sets his restaurant apart from others is its quality food and the fact that “everything is homemade and fresh, never frozen.” “We don’t freeze anything and we have food deliveries two or three times a week,” he said. “We make all our own
dressings and soups. We even bread our own cheese curds.” Popular items on the menu include broasted chicken, sandwiches, hamburgers and wraps. Popular fry options include “junkyard fries,” which are waffle fries with cheese sauce topped like nachos with lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, jalapenos and sour cream with chicken, steak and pork available to be added, and “rodeo fries,” which are waffle fries with cheese sauce, barbecue sauce and pulled pork. In addition to its food, Cruisin’ Genoa has a full bar, with root beer and eight beers on tap, including five craft beers. In the future, the restaurant plans to host car shows and live entertainment events. For information about Cruisin’ Genoa or to place an order, call 815-7849800.
Sycamore High School orchestra wins state competition THE MIDWEEK SYCAMORE – Sycamore High School’s orchestra program has captured top honors – by a comfortable margin – at the annual Illinois High School Association solo and ensemble competition. The orchestra program topped second-place Chicago High School for the Arts and third-place Chicago Northside. SHS earned 174 points, compared with 150 and 120 for the Chicago schools. Meanwhile, the school’s band and vocal programs each tied for seventh
place, according to IHSA rankings. Sycamore’s music program is in the IHSA Class A division. Class A programs are the second largest in Illinois, with school districts having between 555 and 1,254 students. As with so many other programs, the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on this year’s IHSA competition. Due to health and safety concerns, schools of all sizes had to surmount technical and logistical hurdles to record performances and submit them electronically for judging. “We’re incredibly proud of our students and faculty who work so hard,
under adverse circumstances, to do so well,” Scott Mertens, Sycamore music department chair said in a news release. “Our success this year is the result of persistence, practice and dedication. It’s also the result of a community, a school district, and a parent organization that tirelessly support us.” Mertens said Sycamore music programs – from elementary through high school – are regarded as among the best in Illinois. “I am so proud of all of our students and our teachers who help students further their love of music and help them achieve their best effort under
very challenging circumstances,” Superintendent Steve Wilder said in the release. “You’re doing great things, which in turn makes it possible for our students to do great things.” Ken Tonaki, SHS orchestra director, said the accolades reflect persistence. “Regardless of the musical discipline – band, choir, orchestra – success at this level begins in grade school,” he said in the release. “Persistence and commitment through classes, rehearsals, camps, clinics and practice … and then more practice … got us here, and I couldn’t be prouder of our students.”
