WEEK IN REVIEW Braser, Sycamore’s new mayor, sworn in By KATIE FINLON
kfinlon@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A former Sycamore City Council alderman is officially the city’s new mayor about a month after the April 6 consolidated election. Steve Braser, a longtime Third Ward alderman, was sworn into office as the new mayor during the Sycamore City Council meeting on May 3. He said during the ceremony he was joined by his wife, three of his four adult children and other relatives he hasn’t seen for more than a year. “I’m just happy to have them all here tonight,” Braser said. Braser announced his candidacy for the seat in early December 2020 after Curt Lang chose not seek a second term.
Lang said after the April 6 election he was excited to hear that Braser was the then-apparent winner of the mayoral race, since the votes were not yet certified. He said Braser has been involved in city government for more than a decade and he has a good understanding of where the city is and where it hopes to go. Braser said May 3 he wouldn’t have wanted to become the city’s new mayor without the support of his city colleagues. He said he looks forward to working with the council and staff. “I think that we have a very great council going forward and I’m looking forward to the next four years,” Braser said. Braser has been on the City Council for a dozen years and his family had owned
Downtown Shoes for about 50 years. He previously said he wanted to run for the office because he loves the community and loves being involved in serving the community. Braser said his first order of business as Sycamore’s new mayor is finding a new permanent city manager after Brian Gregory took the DeKalb County administrator post on March 1. “That’s going to be the most important here,” Braser said. “We’ve got some strong applications and I look forward to going on from there.” Braser said he’s unsure of how many people have applied for the job thus far. However, he said the city will have a better idea by May 19, when interviews are expected to begin. The selection will happen in June.
County closer to bringing Text 911 system online By KATIE FINLON
kfinlon@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The ability to text a 911 operator in DeKalb County remains months away, but progress in implementing the system is inching forward, according to local emergency personnel. DeKalb County E911 Coordinator Heather Butler said during a May 5 emergency telephone system board meeting that the equipment for the county’s Next Generation 911, or NG911, system largely has been installed throughout the county and that emergency response agencies are now working to install the system’s data component. However, she also said the county recently was informed they received an Illinois state grant for $223,223.20 to fund the next five years of

the NG911 system’s mapping software and management of its server, equipment, installation, training and project oversight. “So that was good news,” Butler said. Next steps include testing the system and ensuring the texting component is functioning properly before making it publicly available. She did not provide an anticipated date the system is expected to go live and said emergency officials are taking a “one step at a time” approach. “I know everybody’s excited about the possibility of texting 911, but we just want to make sure everything’s in place,” Butler said. The update comes after Illinois State Police officials announced a notice of intent to award was issued to AT&T to

develop and implement a statewide NG911 network. Work on the state project is expected to begin in the next couple of months, according to a news release. “A whole generation of people grew up learning the three numbers that would bring help,” ISP Director Brendon Kelly said in the release. “With NG911, we’ll have expanded functionality to provide emergency response for the generation who grew up with the internet.” Next Generation 911 systems use digital or internet-based technology to create a faster system that allows callers to communicate with voice calls or by sending photos, videos or text messages. However, because most 911 systems were built using analog technology, making this changeover requires work and coordination, according to 911.gov.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District will celebrate the renovation of Welsh Park with a dedication event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15. Plans to update and introduce new amenities at Welsh Park, located at 651 Russell Road, have long been in the works. The playground needed replacement and select amenities, like the roller hockey court, were no longer in use and disrepair. Since early 2019, several public input meetings and presentations were held to discuss a master plan to refresh the park. The project also benefited other community initiatives such as the City of DeKalb’s Annie Glidden North Revitalization Plan. At a July 2019 meeting, the DeKalb Park Board approved a site master plan for Welsh Park and authorized staff to move forward with a grant application for OSLAD funds from the Department of Natural Resources. In January 2020, the district received word that it would receive a $385,800 matching grant for the renovation of the park, with DeKalb being one of 85 local communities that benefited from the OSLAD grant. “The timing of the state grant fund-

ON THE RECORD ... with Renee Riani Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com DeKALB – Renee Riani has always loved connecting with the community and teaching others about aviation. Riani is the airport manager of the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport. For 11 years, she has been involved with the aviation program offered at the airport through Kishwaukee Education Consortium. In April 2020, she was hired to replace long-time manager Tom Cleveland, who took a job as director of operations and facilities at DuPage Airport. On Friday, May 14, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce will host its Local Showcase & Spring Fest, presented by Facebook, at the airport, 2200 Pleasant St. in DeKalb. Face masks will be required for the event. The free drive-thru Local Showcase from 4 to 6:30 p.m. will feature more than 50 local businesses and organizations distributing information and giveaways and the Lions Club’s Cruise By Car Show, featuring cars, motorcycles and airplanes. Spring Fest will immediately follow the Local Showcase and will be a walkable, outdoor festival that is free to attend. Food will be available to purchase from Big D’s Hotdogs and Burritoville from 5 to 9 p.m. Live music will

Milton: How did you get into the aviation field? Riani: After I graduated, I had been working for American Eagle full-time, then I transferred to O’Hare and later, I landed a flight instructing job at DuPage Airport. But at that time, there was a down time happening in the aviation industry. I got married and started a family, and I ended up working with the marketing director at the airport in DuPage as the assistant marketing director for the airport authority. Milton: How did you come to DeKalb? Riani: I’m good friends with [previous DeKalb airport manager] Tom Cleveland, we were co-workers back in the day. We kept in contact and our kids grew up together. Bruce Griffith, with the Kishwaukee Education Consortium, reached out to Tom that he needed a new instructor in 2010. I met with Bruce and I got connected to the DeKalb Airport. Milton: How did you come to be the airport’s manager? Riani: This will be my 11th year teaching for the Kishwaukee Education Consortium, every Thursday
Milton: How did the pandemic affect the airport? Riani: At first, it made things a little difficult because people were not able to have in-person contact. That created a delay with some paperwork and payments. We also had a reduction in air traffic in March and April because of the restrictions. However, we did see an increase of people flying privately, where you don’t have TSA or airline restrictions. It’s almost like driving your own car. Flight training has been booming through the pandemic. And now that restrictions have been lifted, flying has been going like gangbusters and business is starting to boom again. Milton: Tell me about Local Showcase & Spring Fest. Riani: We’re hosting the event at the airport, allowing safe social distancing for everyone who wants to come and connect with local organizations and businesses through the chamber. that uses the airport property. Milton: What makes the event unique? Riani: They can drive on a taxiway parallel to the runway, along a section of our main tarmac. The Lions Club has arranged for a drive-thru car show. Everything will be a very slow pace. As people attend the event, they can be handed a brochure or items. Some of the airport tenants will have their own aircraft on display and the airport’s fire truck will be parked and on display. The entrance will be at Peace Road and Pleasant Street, and cars will exit from the main airport terminal on Pleasant Street. Later, there will be food trucks and live music. People can bring their own chairs, sit and enjoy the music. The main parking lot will be available or they can park along Pleasant Street as an overflow. Milton: What do you like most about the event? Riani: The event will give everyone a different view of the airport instead of a parking lot. They’ll actually be driving on the taxiway. It’s a nice way to get outside in a nice setting in the community. It’s also the front end of car show season and there’s a lot of excitement about that. There’s a lot of space outdoors for the food trucks and live music, so people can spread out. It will be a welcoming event. People can come out, drive through and connect with organizations and businesses in the community, enjoying some things they normally wouldn’t get to see or do. It’s a great kickoff to spring.

MEET & GREET
Back Alley Market brings shoppers to downtown DeKalb By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com

eKALB – Sean Ferguson of Sycamore went shopping with his three daughters to find the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. But instead of going to a big box store, they went to the DeKalb Back Alley Market, searching for something unique and handmade. “Part of her Mother’s Day gift is us getting out of the house for a while, and we’re hoping to find something to bring back as a gift,” he said. “The weather is beautiful and there’s lots of vendors. It’s the perfect day out.” Ferguson and other outdoor shoppers had their choice of 48 vendors who participated in the market held Saturday, May 8, in downtown DeKalb. The Egyptian Theatre also housed vendors and had its concession stand and restrooms open for shoppers. Jana Nowak, one of the three event coordinators, described Back Alley Market as “an openair market with vendors of all types.” “There’s something for everyone: dog treats, spices, CBD oil, art, plants and jewelry,” she said. “I’m just glad we were able to coordinate a day out in downtown DeKalb, reacquainting people with local vendors, shops and restaurants.” Dorothy Francke of Genoa usually attends three or four markets a year with her business Patches N Pickens, selling handmade purses, planter chairs, stepping stones and quilted items. “It’s great to be out and about again at the market,” she said. “It’s nice to just get out and do something and see the beautiful things everyone has for sale.” Sarah Katzel of Sycamore sold handmade jewelry through her business, This Little Doodle, sharing space with Francke at the market. “Showing my items in person is so much better than online,” Katzel said. “The benefit of the event is that you get to talk to people and have face-to-face interaction.” Mickey Beckman of Sycamore browsed the vendors’ wares. “I’m not looking for anything in particular, but you never know when you’ll find a little treasure,” she said. Shannon Erickson of Cortland chose the outdoor event as her first-ever show, selling bloom art, also called pour paintings, through her business Rhythm & Blooms. “It’s just a really cool event,” she said. “It’s a great way to meet a lot of people and for them to see your items for sale, in person.” The event organizers are planning another DeKalb Back Alley Market in the fall, with the date tentatively set for Oct. 2. For information, visit the event’s Facebook page or Facebook event.

Public invited to DeKalb schools focus group DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 is involved in a strategic planning process as it prepares for the future. Part of this process involves seeking broad community input. Residents are invited to share their views through a focus group. The input will help guide the district’s goal setting and next steps. Laura Martinez and Lori Grant, field services directors with the Illinois Association of School Boards, will facilitate a focus group to help the Board of Education receive input from the community. This focus group is an important part of the strategic planning process because it is designed to obtain the input of teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and community members about the direction of the district. The focus group will also provide an opportunity for participants to identify goals on which they feel the Board of Education should concentrate. The focus group session will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at DeKalb High School (exact location to follow) and will last approximately two hours.
RSVPs are required due to space limitations related to COVID-19 restrictions. RSVP as soon as possible by contacting Shannon Whitaker at calling 815-7542292 or shannon.whitaker@d428.org.

If any automobilist has an idea that the road between DeKalb and the cement road leading to Sycamore is pleasant to travel on let him confer with the fire chief. The fire boys went out to the Electric park fire this morning and when they struck that stretch of road with the pea gravel they could not travel over ten miles an hour, and then it was hard work to keep in the road. Many people of the county would appreciate the fixing up of this road and it is probable that something will be done there before the summer is over. Now that John Anderson has a big part of Lincoln Highway town up for the purpose of connecting several buildings along the street with the sanitary sewer, the street cars have considerable trouble now and then, due to careless parking of automobiles. Several times of late the cars have been compelled to wait two or three minutes for some motorist to get his car out of the way. Sleepers at the police station last night, eight of them, thought they had stuck a regular village, when about 11 o’clock the sergeant informed them there was food sent in for them. Some of the sleepers had not eaten but little during the day and the sound of food was a welcome one to them. Following the party at the Vassar Swiss rooms last night by the Auxiliary and the Legion, information was secured as to the number of sleepers at the station and enough of everything sent over to go around. The lodgers expressed their thanks to the Legion boys for their thoughtfulness. Jack Cook, who is always in a hurry, whether in his little fixer truck, or the large machine, was going north on Fourth Street yesterday afternoon with a piano box. Cook thought the box would ride without being tied in and he forgot that some parts of North Fourth Street are not as smooth as the cement pavement. The boys around the fire station were watching the antics of the piano box and just as Cook crossed the switch at the car barns, the box started for the air and Jack was going so fast his machine was away before the box hit the ground again.

An estimated 3,000 persons participated in the 30-mile Hike for Hunger yesterday in the Sycamore and DeKalb area. Unofficial records estimate that approximately one-half of the started managed to complete the long trek. Although it will take a while to get accurate figures, the marchers have earned an estimated $50,000. The final figure from last year’s march was $42,000 earned by 2,500 walkers. Photo provided

facturing a piece of playground equipment for backyards. Mr. Strombom has been working on this for two years. The idea for the device came to Mr. Strombom while coaching at the high school. He noticed that there was a need for a portable basket that a boy intending to play basketball could improve his shooting in his own back year. This ”Playmate,” which is the trade name, was also designed as a play set. The advantage of “Playmate” over other types of this kind of equipment, is that it can be used for children from the age of two years up to the senior in high school. The South Grove Centennial to be held at the Driscoll Woods on May 26 will be held in the South Grove school in case of inclement weather. Shortly after completing my early newspaper training, a famous publisher made a remark to me that didn’t mean much at the time. He said, “Young man, you can tell a city by the kind of service clubs it has.” DeKalb is indeed fortunate it has two excellent service clubs, the Kiwanis and Rotary. In studying the accomplishments of just one of these clubs, the Kiwanis, we can agree he was very wise. DeKalb Kiwanis celebrates its 25th anniversary Monday evening with a dinner and many special guests. Mrs. Cora Scott was a guest of Ruth Dresser of Northwest DeKalb, when her nephews and nieces aided her in celebrating her birthday with a cake being presented.

In an effort to create greater awareness of bicycling as a potential solution to various ecological programs caused by gas-guzzling vehicles, Saturday was celebrated by thousands of bicyclists throughout the nation as National Bikecology Day. These bicyclers gathered at Northern Illinois University and then paraded, with a police escort, through the adjoining DeKalb business district and back through the NIU campus.

The would-be developer of a residential subdivision is suing the DeKalb County government, looking to reverse its decision to deny his proposal. Stage Coach resumes live performances May 20 THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – On May 20, Stage Coach Players will open its doors for the first time in more than a year for the comedy-drama, “Come Back To the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean,” by Ed Graczyk. Directed by David W. Booth, the play runs from May 20 through May 29. The story revolves around a 20-year reunion celebrating the life and death of famous actor James Dean, which becomes a life-altering gathering of one of his fan clubs at a diner in the small town of McCarthy, Texas. Calling themselves “The Disciples of Jimmy Dean,” this group of women come together in 1975 to mark the anniversary of the actor’s death. The ladies’ reminiscences mingle with flashbacks to their youth. One even claims to have gotten pregnant by Jimmy Dean while she was a film extra on the set of the movie “Giant.” Then a stunning-but-familiar stranger arrives, setting off a series of confrontations that smash their delusions and expose bitter disappointments. Performances for “Come Back To the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” will be at 7:30 p.m. May 20-22 and May 27-29, and 2 p.m. May 23. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and children age 13 and younger. Tickets will not be available at the door. For this production, audience members must wear a mask at all times while in the theater. Each individual’s mask must cover both their nose and mouth. Seating will be done in a manner that ensures

THE MIDWEEK Chemistry Professor Tao Xu is one of the many Northern Illinois University faculty members known for being an innovator. Since joining NIU in 2006, Xu has worked to develop new highly efficient solar cells, discover a new electrocatalyst that converts carbon dioxide and water into ethanol, and create other novel materials through his lab’s nanotechnology research. His research group has collaborated with Argonne National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado as they’ve pursued renewable energy technologies to help mitigate global climate change. At the next NIU STEM Café on May 12, Xu will discuss the latest research into renewable energy and share information about his lab’s current work. The STEM Café will take place online at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Register at go.niu.edu/fuelfuture. Just as importantly, Xu says one topic of his talk will be the art of innovation itself. Xu uses terms such as “spinoff technologies” when he describes the ways in which emerging research impacts human lifestyles, and he likes to remind listeners of a surprising fact: “Emerging renewable energy technologies may also jeopardize our environment if no precautious scientific measures are taken prior to their scaled implementation.” In other words, new technologies often have unanticipated effects that require further innovation. Xu’s research into solar cells has addressed these effects head-on, as his team has worked to contain the toxic

According to a news release from the college, Barnes, a 1992 Kishwaukee College graduate, is among 20 other nominees from community colleges throughout Illinois. “Kish nominated Barnes for his years of success in the information technology industry and active participation in community service,” college officials wrote in the news release. “His continued support of improving the quality of life in DeKalb will move into a larger role following his victory in the DeKalb mayoral election earlier this month.” “Barnes’ success in both private business and public service reaffirms the impact the community college experience can have on an individual and their educational journey,” according to the release.

RAMP receives grant for access to services
DeKALB – RAMP recently received a $3,000 grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation to help improve
NORTHERN ILLINOIS CARRY
access for people with disabilities to be able to use RAMP’s Independent Living Services safely, in person or in a hybrid remote manner. When the pandemic hit last spring, RAMP had to make some swift changes and find creative solutions to serve individuals with disabilities through its existing programs and services while also addressing the emergent needs of our consumers. When schools were forced to shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions, students with disabilities, many who thrive on structure and support, were threatened by new challenges and at greater risk of falling behind. The lack of peer support and in-person interactions also brought concerns of social isolation. RAMP will be better able to respond to the needs of the community in the future with the help of this grant. For more information about RAMP’s services, visit www.rampcil.org or contact Katie Lee, DeKalb County RAMP manager, at 815-756-3202 or klee@ rampcil.org. –The MidWeek

NIU clinic offers free, online summer tutoring in reading DeKALB – Northern Illinois University’s Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic is offering free and online tutoring in reading this summer for students entering second through fifth grades. Tutoring sessions begin in late May, opening with an evaluation of each child’s reading ability, and continue through late July with instruction tailored
15
to each child’s specific needs. Individualized instruction is delivered in 30-minute sessions by NIU students completing their bachelor’s or master’s degrees in education. Children should have access to tablets or computers (not cellphones) in a quiet area of their homes. “Good reading is critical to academic achievement. Prior to the pandemic, half or more of students struggled to become smooth readers, and this has worsened in the last year,” David D. Paige, director of the clinic, said in a news release. “The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic trains our NIU students to help young readers improve their reading and unlock their academic potential.” Faculty from the department of NIU College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction supervise the tutors, who are known as “reading stewards” at the clinic with a 60-year legacy of helping children to improve their literacy. Space is limited; email literacyclinic@ niu.edu as soon as possible to reserve a spot for your child or for more information. Recommended men’s health screenings METRO CREATIVE Men need to be proactive in regard to monitoring their overall health. This includes seeing their doctors for regular wellness visits and keeping up with recommended screenings to catch and/or prevent illnesses. While men and women can experience the same conditions, health experts recommend specific tests and screenings for men in various age groups. Johns Hopkins Medicine advises that men are at risk for certain conditions, including several types of cancer, such as prostate, colon and lung cancers. However, Harvard Medical School states men are less likely than women to get routine physical exams and screenings. An American Academy of Family Physicians survey found that 55 percent of men had not seen their doctors for a physical exam in the previous year, even though 40 percent had a least one chronic condition. While many screenings are recommended starting at age 40 or 50, men should discuss family histories and risk factors to determine if testing should begin earlier. The following are important health screenings to consider. • Prostate-specific antigen test: A PSA is a blood test that measures how much prostate-specific antigen is in the blood. Measuring PSA has been a standard for prostate cancer screening for 30 years. General guidelines indicate PSA screening begin at age 55. However, having at least one first-degree relative with prostate cancer could necessitate earlier testing. • Colorectal cancer screening: Colorectal cancer screening generally occurs between ages 50 and 75. Tests
include fecal occult blood tests, stool DNA tests, colonoscopy, and contrast barium enemas. Doctors will determine which tests are applicable and how often to conduct them. • Diabetes: Men who have a BMI over 25 are overweight and should consider a diabetes screening. In addition, blood pressure above 130/80 mm Hg or other diabetes risk factors could require a blood test to check for elevated glucose levels. • Abdominal aortic aneurysm: Guidelines recommend a one-time screening for men who have smoked between the ages of 65 and 75. • Hepatitis B and C: Men are at increased risk for infection if they have had unprotected sex with multiple partners, received blood transfusions or transplanted organs before June 1992, are healthcare workers who have been stuck by needles, or travel to regions with high rates of the hepatitis B virus. • Lung cancer screening: Men should undergo a lung cancer screening through low-dose computed tomography if they are over age 55, have a 30-pack-per-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years. • Testicular cancer screening: Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers among young men, says Johns Hopkins Medicine. Early screening can include self-checks. Routinely checking the testicles for any lumps or unusual features while showering can help detect testicular cancer. Doctors may order a painless ultrasound if something is discovered. Health screenings are an important component of men’s health care. Now is the time to have a discussion with the doctor about which screenings are necessary.

DAR chapter honors groups for community service THE MIDWEEK The Gen. John Stark Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Sycamore recently honored two groups from the DeKalb County community with DAR Community Service Awards. The awards are presented on local, state and national levels to individuals and groups who have contributed to their communities in an outstanding voluntary, heroic, civil or benevolent manner, or who have participated in or organized community activities. The first group honored, commonly known as “Taking Care of our Caretakers – DeKalb County,” was formed shortly after the COVID-19 stay-athome order was issued in 2020. A group of local women – Melissa Butts, Christi Coulter, Sue Christiansen, Katie Geer, Tammy Harper, Brenda Jergens, Patricia Myers and Jennifer Yochem – started raising money in an effort to support local restaurants, caretakers and essential workers. The idea was that residents of DeKalb County would donate funds or gift cards for the group to use in purchasing food and snacks from local restaurants and businesses. The food

John Stark Chapter Community Service Committee chair, and Mary Pritchard, chapter regent. and snacks would then be delivered by the group to local caretakers and essential workers at hospitals, clinics, retirement homes and first responders all across the county. The restaurants and businesses, in turn, would benefit from the purchases while closed to sit-in dining or shopping. The initial goal was to raise $3,000. Within four months more than $30,000 was raised. To date the group has raised more than $50,000.
While many individuals volunteered with the group over time, these eight women were the main organizers and administrators. Each deserves praise and recognition for their community service. The second group recognized with a DAR Community Service Award is the DeKalb County Quilters’ Guild. This already-established group quickly stepped up to sew masks when one of its members alerted them that the
memory care facility where she worked was quickly running out of PPE and needed some back-up masks. The quilters’ guild stepped up and from there, with other requests coming to them, they began working with the DeKalb County Health Department to organize requests, quantities, pickups and dropoffs. Working separately, yet together, they searched for and shared the best patterns for masks, figured out the best ways to work around an elastic shortage, and used up their personal fabric stores. Each week brought more requests. In 10 days, the group made 678 masks, and by April 4, 2020, they had 1,305 masks made. To date, the group has made and distributed more than 5,000 masks in DeKalb and neighboring counties. The Gen. John Stark Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was formed in Sycamore in 1907. The DAR is nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education.
