Youth Engaged in Philanthropy will host an informational meeting at 3 p.m. Sept. 10, featuring a field trip to DeKalb County nonprofits that received money from the youth-led organization earlier this year.

Kishwaukee Valley Art League welcomes autumn

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK

The Kishwaukee Valley Art League is welcoming autumn with a variety of events for September.

This month’s general meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Gallery on State, 322 W. State St. in Sycamore. The theme is “Create with KVAL.” It seems that everyone enjoys a good movie, so what better way to celebrate this than challenging KVAL members to create art related to the theme “The Movies.”

KVAL general meetings are held the first Thursday of each month except January. The community is encouraged and welcome to attend at no cost.

Rick Borrett will host his second “Second Saturday” program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 9, at Gallery on State. Attendees should plan on bringing their own art supplies for an interesting session with Borrett, an accomplished painter and wood carver.

KVAL members are reminded that the deadline for submitting artwork for “Uncle Joe’s 150th Jubilee Fundraiser” is Oct. 1. This event is sponsored by the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center in DeKalb. KVAL is proud to partner with the center for this fundraiser.

The featured artist at Gallery on State for September is Richard Born. His work will be displayed in the east window and adjoining wall, with all work being for sale. Born has been interested in photography since he was

a child. He has added scanography to his repertoire, with many of the pieces on display created from scanography and printed directly on metal or ceramic.

Born has shown his work at the Nor-

LOOKING BACK

1923 – 100 YEARS AGO

If DeKalb has the feeling that the high automobile license plates for 1923 have been coming this way, they are due for a correction, as a letter received by Elvin Carlson from Harry Olson, an official in the automobile license department in the secretary of state’s office at Springfield, states that on Tuesday at the time of writing, the sale of plates had reached over the 928,000 mark. If this rate is continued it will mean that the state of Illinois will have over 1,000,000 vehicles that have applied for 1923 licenses at the secretary of state’s office by the end of the year.

Announcement comes today that the new library which was recently built in Malta will be dedicated Saturday night at 7:30 o’clock. Everything has been completed in the building and it will be opened for the first time to public inspection. The Malta band will be on hand and it is understood that several speeches will be given by prominent residents of the village. After dedication, the people may inspect the building and books. Mrs. William Phelps is president of the board and along with Miss Beulah Harrington, librarian, worked hard to make the new library possible.

Yes, they have no bananas, but at the First National bank may be found about as good as imitation of an enlarged banana as has been seen for a long time. At the institution of great funds is a large Guinea bean, weighing, according to the card of information, 15 pounds. The large bean is from the farm of Allen Redmond. Those who are acquainted with the product state that it is one of the largest seen in these parts for some time.

DeKalb on Saturday lost a window trimmer, when he tried to “trim” his employer. The young man, who has not been a resident of DeKalb for a very long time, was caught in the act, so to speak, Saturday, when a detective purchased a long list of articles from him, giving the salesman in return about $30, in marked bills. The bills were later found in the pocket of the window trimmer. A visit to his home brought to light many articles of merchandise from the store in which he worked. As far as can be ascertained today, he or his wife cannot be located in this city. They were last seen about noon Saturday, employees in the store stating that he was required to leave at noon because of feeling faint.

1948 – 75 YEARS AGO

With tears and cheers, the Netherlands today bade farewell to an old queen and welcomed a new one. The tears were for Queen Wilhelmina, who signed just before noon papers abdicating the throne she had held for half a century and became, at her own wish, once more a princess. The cheers were for her 39-year-old daughter, Juliana, who became Queen of the Netherlands and ruler of the Dutch Empire at the exact moment her mother signed the instrument of abdication in a private ceremony in the Royal Palace before a small group.

Several hundred DeKalb County farmers visited the Preston Woods farm near Waterman Friday on the annual Farm Bureau-Farm Management visit to specially chosen co-operators. The Woods farm of 312 acres was chosen by the service to demonstrate what can be done on a place cut up by a large ditch and by township roads. Also, to see the Woods farm’s outstanding record of productivity. Woods operates a grain, feeder cattle farm and has lived on the place 28 years. He owns 192 acres and leases 120 acres.

The farm home owned by William Oberg and located about two miles south of DeKalb on the First Street Road was damaged by fire which broke out

during the noon hour. Some remodeling work was underway on the home and a number of shingles were scattered about on the yard and the blaze is thought to have been started when a cigarette ignited some of the shingles in the yard.

Bales of straw are scattered along both sides of the new blacktop road north of the Milan Town Hall. The straw is used as a binder on the sides, about 150 tons being required.

Greentown School, taught by Mrs. Gaylord Tate and the Wesson School taught by Mrs. Catherine Dunlap of DeKalb opened on Monday, the only two schools left in Victor of the five former rural schools of years ago. The Suydam School did not reopen this fall. The pupils from there have been transferred some to Somonauk, some to Leland and five are going to the Wesson School.

Charlotte Furland and Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Sebby of DeKalb, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Furland attended the Railroad Fair in Chicago Wednesday.

1973 – 50 YEARS AGO

DeKalb’s Planning Commission approved an annexation and rezoning request for a shopping center on Annie Glidden Road last night and heard the initial presentation for another which

would be located near Northland Plaza. The request from Riverside Trails Inc. for rezoning on a 55-acre portion of a 225-acre plot between West Lincoln Highway and West Taylor St. on the west side of Annie Glidden. On that land, the developers propose to construct a 287,000-square-foot enclosed shopping mall with two or three large department stores and numerous smaller shops. In addition, there would be a sports arena adjacent to the center with facilities for home hockey games for NIU.

Sycamore High School received a phone call about 10:10 a.m. today warning a bomb had been planted in the school. While students and school personnel were evacuated, Sycamore police and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police searched the building. No bomb was found and students and teachers were allowed back inside the building at 11:30 a.m.

One of the biggest entertainment bargains of the year will begin a five-day run tomorrow when the DeKalb County Fair at Sandwich opens for the 86th year. The Sandwich Fair offers free entertainment on its 100 tree-shaded acres.

1998 – 25 YEARS AGO

Things may be getting quieter around the area soon, and that is good news. A tentative agreement is in hand between Union Pacific Railroad and the communities along the tracks which could bring an end to the excessively loud train whistling. Work remains to be done before Union Pacific agrees to designate “quiet zones” through Cortland, DeKalb, Maple Park, Rochelle and Elburn, but significant progress has been made.

Record Revolution, DeKalb’s oldest established music store, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this Thursday, Sept. 10. The business is locally owned and operated by DeKalb resident Mark Cerny. Cerny started the store at 904 W. Lincoln Hwy., the site of the former Turk’s grocery store and variety shop Glass Onion. Record Revolution relocated to the University City shopping center in 1978. The establishment has moved twice within the plaza and now occupies the end store with more than 1,800 feet of retail space. “Once people know what you have, they come back,” said Robert Wise, store manager and employee since 1976.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County celebrates 25 years

SYCAMORE – At Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County, staff, board members and volunteers know well the costs of homeownership and how important it is for people to build generational wealth.

Executive Director Kim McIver said she’s proud of the organization and its efforts to try to bring about change.

“Habitat is a hand up, it’s not a handout,” McIver said. “Our partner families build alongside us. I feel that a Habitat home is a generational foundation pillar within a family. Because when kids grow up in a safe environment, then they take that with them through life. So, I think having a safe home is a basic necessity that everyone should have the same access to.”

In 2023, Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 25th anniversary of serving DeKalb County and its residents.

Since its inception, the organization has helped 16 families attain homeownership and is preparing to assist its 17th.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County board member Tricia Delwiche said that knowing the organization has been serving the community for 25 years means a great deal.

“It’s really exciting that we’re at this turning point,” Delwiche said. “We’re able to celebrate what we have accomplished and anticipate the changes that

we’re going to be making because there’s a lot of new things that we’re undertaking.”

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County has been adding new programs to its offerings in the run-up to celebrating the organization’s milestone anniversary. Among those introduced was a financial literacy course, which was rolled out about a year ago.

McIver said the course serves its purpose well: allowing individuals to understand the influence of their financial credit score and their financial health in order for them to become not only a Habitat for Humanity homeowner, but understand what it means to have healthy credit and an understanding of their overall finances.

Malta resident Michelle Ramey said she is glad she and her husband decided to become Habitat for Humanity homeowners after renting for as long as they had.

“One day, when I was just overwhelmed with the cost of rent and just stressed about not owning a house, my dad was like, ‘Have you ever applied for Habitat for Humanity?’ ” Ramey said. “That’s when I started looking into it.”

Michelle’s husband, Curtis Ramey, said he is appreciative of everything ththe organization has done for him and his wife.

“We got lucky,” he said. “What they

Women donates to Kishwaukee Special Recreation

SYCAMORE – The Kishwaukee Special Recreation Association recently received a donation from 100+ Women Who Care to go toward new items for the group’s sensory room at a community center in Sycamore.

The check was used to buy an interactive floor cube for the sensory room at the Sycamore Park District Community Center.

“We are excited to bring a sensory room to the KSRA families and the community we serve,” Dawn Schaefer, executive director of the recreation association, said in the release. “With the support of the Sycamore Park District staff and the KSRA board of directors, our dream is one step closer to being a reality.”

The floor cube projects various games on the floor. The games allow gross and fine motor skill development and practice.

do really helps.”

McIver said Habitat for Humanity does its best to support area families, even as the organization has been faced with rising costs.

“We’ve seen quite an increase in the cost of not only the labor [but] the materials that we use,” McIver said. “That’s felt across the board at all the Habitats. We have great supporters that offer us discounted rates or do a gift in kind because they understand the importance of what we’re doing and also want to empower those partner families to know that we have solid partners that are behind this, as well.”

Delwiche said a newer initiative that Habitat for Humanity has undertaken offers incentives to builders, encouraging them to do more to construct more energy-efficient homes for the organization. She said the houses built for Habitat are held to a standard of affordability and quality in line with the organization’s mission.

“We do a good job of keeping up with the times,” Delwiche said. “We recognize the value of having wellbuilt houses that last, and I think that’s always been the case.”

The sensory room provides an environment for users to participate in activities.

The room also offers attendees a place to develop, stimulate and learn to process the world. The sensory room includes the floor cube, two bubble tubes, a hanging light curtain and two wall sensory panels.

KSRA recreational therapists will use the room on an appointment basis. The sensory room also is available to KSRA community center program participants. The schedule will be available on social media and the KSRA website.

be able to make everything happen without the support of generous volunteers.

Sycamore resident Gil Larimer said volunteering for Habitat has made sense on many levels for him.

“It gave me a chance to play with my tools, but also, more importantly, form relationships with the members of the board, the volunteer group and the partner family group,” Larimer said. “We moved here after I retired. So it gave us a chance to get acquainted with people.”

Larimer said he first got involved as a volunteer in the late 1980s. He said he’s remained a Habitat volunteer for as long as he has for several reasons.

“I believe in the mission: a hand up rather than a handout,” Larimer said. “Providing decent, affordable housing for people who otherwise may not be able to afford it just seemed like, as a retired clergyman, a way to extend my ministry.”

As Habit for Humanity of DeKalb County moves ahead in its 25th year and beyond, Delwiche said the organization remains committed to its mission.

“They can expect to hear [about] a lot more homes,” she said. “They can expect to have us involved in other things that they’ll be directly seeing, like building. They can expect to see us more involved in doing home repairs.”

DCCF announces creation of nursing scholarship fund

SYCAMORE – A new memorial scholarship fund to honor the legacy of the late nurse and DeKalb County Health Department administrator Cindy Graves will go to support area students seeking a career in nursing.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation recently announced the Cindy Graves Nursing Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was created by Graves’ children, Brandon and Ethan, and her good friend Janet Hunt. The fund honors Cindy Graves, a DeKalb County public health nurse who had a tremendous impact on the community, according to a news release.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to DeKalb County residents currently working as nursing professionals and continuing their education in nursing to grow professionally and better serve their patients.

Born on Aug. 20, 1960, in Carthage, Illinois, Graves graduated from Sycamore High School in 1978. She attended Northern Illinois University and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She later received a registered nursing degree from Kishwaukee College in 1985, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from NIU in 1989 and a master’s degree in health care administration from St. Francis College in 2013.

Graves was a registered nurse at Kishwaukee Hospital for 30 years. During that time, she worked as a pediatric nurse and emergency room RN, house supervisor, ER charge nurse, EMS educator, EMS coordinator and ER director from 2005 to 2012. From 2012 until her death in May 2022, Graves worked at the DeKalb County Health Department as the director of community health and prevention, health promotion, and emergency preparedness.

Outside of work, Graves was active in the community. She served as council president at Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore. In addition, she was a member and president of the Illinois Public Health Nurses Association and served on the board of directors for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Eligible applicants for the Cindy Graves Nursing Scholarship must live in DeKalb County but need not work in DeKalb County. Preference is given

to student applicants currently working in and/or pursuing additional education in the nursing specialization areas of public health nursing, emergency medicine or pediatrics, according to the news release. Students may attend any accredited educational institution, college or university.

The Scholarship Fund distributed its inaugural award in July 2023 to Nicole Fitzpatrick of DeKalb.

Fitzpatrick is pursuing a master’s degree in nursing from NIU, according to the release. She also is the simulation lab coordinator at the NIU School of Nursing. Her prior work experience includes 21 years at Kishwaukee Hospital.

“I was blessed to have known Cindy Graves before she transitioned to her role at the DeKalb County Health Department,” Fitzpatrick said in the release. “I am invested in this community and proud to have cared for the people who live in it. I want to help increase patients’ quality of care by helping to produce nurses with excellent clinical skills and clinical judgment.”

Foundation Executive Director Dan Templin said Graves’ legacy continues.

“Cindy’s compassion and skills as a nursing professional touched the lives of many patients and residents in DeKalb County. This endowed Scholarship Fund will invest in the professional development of generations of nurses to come,” Templin said in the release.

Donations to any fund at the Community Foundation, including the Cindy Graves Nursing Scholarship Fund, can be made online at dekalbccf.
