WEEK IN REVIEW DeKalb plans to appoint ‘recording secretary’ By KELSEY RETTKE

krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb Ward 2 Alderwoman Barb Larson said a plan to appoint someone other than City Clerk Sasha Cohen to keep minutes at city council meetings “isn’t personal,” but rather an attempt to keep up with standards of record-keeping required under law, a responsibility aldermen said the clerk fails to meet. “It’s not a personal attack,” Larson said during the Nov. 8 council meeting, addressing Cohen, who previously called the proposal “an attack on the independence” of the clerk’s office. “As the city of DeKalb, we’ve had standards and they have to be maintained,” Larson said. “They have to be clear and they have to be accurate.” Council members supported a plan to

appoint an official “Recording Secretary” to the City Council amid ongoing concerns that Cohen is violating state law by failing to perform clerical duties as required, leading to incomplete city records. City officials said minutes taken by Cohen are “chronically late and incomplete,” include typographical errors and misspellings, fail to note which aldermen make motions or how they vote, and violate the Illinois Open Meetings Act, according to city documents. In response, Cohen accused the city manager’s office of continuing “a years long effort ... to consolidate the working powers of the city clerk,” and said the council held a closed executive session on Oct. 25 during which they discussed him, an elected official. In order to alleviate the ongoing clerical issues, the city council and Mayor Cohen Barnes plan to appoint Ruth Scott, the city’s

executive assistant and former deputy clerk, as recording secretary, and will vote on the measure Nov. 22. City documents state “such action will not change or diminish the duties of the City Clerk.” Among the clerk’s other duties are notarizing documents for the city and administering elections. Scott would be in charge of handling meeting minute protocol instead of Cohen effective immediately, if approved. Scott formerly served as deputy clerk until the position was eliminated in 2019 amid controversy surrounding previous city clerk Lynn Fazekas. Ward 1 Alderman Carolyn Morris called the issue “really concerning.” She said Cohen’s minutes “demonstrate a lack of skills, perhaps attention to detail, a lack of ability to edit basic typographical errors, and don’t record the history of our city council as it is happening.”

Sycamore school buildings capacity between 65%-85% By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com

SYCAMORE – Sycamore school district buildings are operating at more than half to almost full capacity, according to district officials, who last week said they’re beginning to think of a longterm plan for building life. Enrollment numbers and building capacity limits were recently discussed by the Sycamore School District 427 board. All seven of the school district’s buildings have an operational capacity, meaning the rate of students a building can handle per state standards, between 65 to 85%, according to district documents. Sycamore Superintendent Steve

Wilder said that before any decisions are made on how to address capacity limits, which could include redistricting and construction of a new building in the future, “the community will have the opportunity to give their feedback and input.” “Any changes we make will have an impact on all taxpayers with property tax, not only families that have children in the district,” he said. “We have to be good stewards of the resources that have been given to us by the community, so that five, 10 or 20 years down the road, we’ll be ready and prepared to make whatever changes are necessary.” Sycamore Middle School has the highest percent capacity at 86%, documents show. South Prairie Elementary School

has the lowest percent capacity at 65%. Wilder said that capacity for each school building is calculated differently. Three different capacity numbers were discussed at the meeting: the recommended Illinois State Board of Education capacity, designed architectural operational capacity and the current operational capacity. “Every school has a different design for how it operates on a day-to-day basis,” he said. “Capacity depends on many factors.” Wilder said the school board first discussed building capacities during a September meeting. “It was a future focus item in September, and we will continue to bring it back, discuss it and make decisions,” he said.

Toys for Tots is collecting new, unwrapped toys at locations throughout DeKalb County.

Toys for Tots needs donations for all ages THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Toys for Tots is collecting new, unwrapped toys at locations throughout DeKalb County. DeKalb County Toys for Tots supplies toys to nonprofit agencies, which give presents for the holidays to more than 2,000 children. In the past, because of the number of toys donated and the number of kids needing toys, the organization usually has about 1,000 toys to store for the following year. Last year’s need was so large, however, that there were no surplus toys, and there are no toys left to start this year. There are about 100 donation boxes around the county to collect the toys, including: DeKalb Public Library, Aarons, Bill White’s Car Hospital, EcoWater, UPS Store, Lehan Drugs, Brad Manning Ford, Jewel Osco in Sycamore and DeKalb, Family Health Center, Just the Details, Ralph’s Car Wash, HyVee, Five Below, Walgreens in Sycamore and DeKalb, Brian Bemis Toyota, Dodge, Ford and Honda, DeKalb GMC Chevy, Menards, Country Financial, Family Dental Cared, Merlin Complete Auto Care, Sycamore Integrated Health, Kishwaukee Family YMCA and Dollar General in DeKalb and Cortland. All boxes will be picked up Dec. 10 and Dec. 11 to allow volunteers to sort and deliver to agencies before Christmas. Toys for all ages are needed. Toys for Toys gives toys to children and

teens through age 18, as long as they are in high school. Gift ideas for children up to age 2 include books, teething toys and educational and musical toys. Children ages 3 to 8 enjoy the newest popular items from current movies and TV shows such as “Frozen,” “Star Wars” and “Marvel, Fortnite,” according to a news release. Children ages 9 to 15 generally prefer chapter or young adult books, arts and craft supplies, science items, popular name-brand items such as Fortnite, Minecraft, electronics, ear buds, headphones and Nerf items. Items for ages 15 to 18 include nail polish, perfume, cologne, shaving items, makeup, digital watches, jewelry, sports equipment, skateboards, automotive tools, beginning tool sets and drones. Monetary donations can be made online at dekalb-il.toysfortots.org. Every donation – toy or money – given in DeKalb County stays local. The money is used to purchase books and toys for the ages that are lacking items in the donation boxes. In DeKalb County, Toys for Tots looks to give each family a board game, large puzzle or family video to promote family time; each child two toys; each child an age-appropriate book to promote literacy; and each child several stocking stuffers depending on donations. For information, contact the DeKalb County Toys for Tots coordinator at 779-777-5896 or dekalb.il@toysfortots. org.

ON THE RECORD ... with Kristen Tindall Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com DeKALB – For Kristen Tindall, not only are no two days alike, things can change in a minute at her job. Tindall is the manager of the emergency department at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. Phase 1 of the hospital’s emergency department reconstruction opened last month allowing its staff better flow throughout the department and updating patient rooms. Phase 1 is the most visible portion of the renovation for the public and includes the main entrance, the waiting room, testing bays and fast-track rooms. The $12 million renovation project began in April. The project is scheduled to take place in three phases over 16 months to allow optimal emergency Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com department operations during conKristen Tindall, emergency department manager at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee struction. Milton: What is some of the upgraded medical equipment? Tindall: We have new GE cardiac monitors that allow us more customizations to improve monitoring of heart rhythms throughout the [emergency department]. We will have big displays of those rhythms to see those from more locations throughout the ER, more than what we previously could. Milton: What is an improvement you’d like to highlight? Tindall: Another highlight is in our behavioral health rooms. The rooms have access doors, almost like garage doors, that we can raise and lower. All of our medical equipment is behind those doors for safety. Milton: Are the behavioral health rooms a new addition? Tindall: We’ve had behavioral health rooms, but they didn’t have anything in them. If we needed to do vital signs, we had to bring machines in. If we needed a computer, we needed to bring it in. Now we’re able to have everything in the room. It’s just a matter of raising and lowering the garage doors.

Milton: What is an example of that versatility? Tindall: During surges and large influxes of patients, there are sometimes patients that we do have to take care of in the hallway. We will now have emergency equipment behind paintings so we can take care of patients when rooms are full. Milton: What is it like working in an emergency department? Tindall: The No. 1 thing is that it’s an unpredictable environment. Not only are no two days alike, things can change in a minute. You might have a slower day, and then you have an inbound from EMS that five patients are coming in from an accident. You have to switch gears quickly and be

We still will have loud noises at times, still some containment walls that will be up and we will be using alternate spaces to take care of patients. The total renovation process is estimated to be complete August or September 2022. The second phase will take six months and the third phase four months. The renovation will improve flow through the ER. There will be natural lighting, windows, comfortable chairs, which all lead to a good healing environment.

MIDWEEK The MidWeek / MidWeeknews.com • Wednesday, Nov 17, 2021

Milton: What has changed in the emergency department since 2008? Tindall: The biggest change is technology. The cardiac monitors have customizations that have developed over time. We also have new trauma carts, and so when we have a patient, getting X-rays will be easier in bed. We have increased volumes and surges of patients throughout the years. When we redesigned the ER, we made our spaces very versatile that can take care of any type of patient.

Milton: What are some difficulties of working in an emergency department? Tindall: Nurses have to go from one room with a child with abdominal pain and then go right into another patient’s room that is grieving because a loved one is dying. They have to be able to make that shift, from cheerful and calming a child to helping an adult going through a very difficult time. We also have to be making sure we keep our patients informed of expectations. We do this every day, but for patients and visitors, it’s often the worst day of their lives. We have to make sure we do a good job of explaining everything so they know what their ER visit is going to be like.

FILLING THE NEED St. Vincent de Paul opens free supply closet for the community By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com

DeKALB – DeKalb community members in need of toiletry, cleaning and hygienic items can visit a newly created supply closet that is open to the public once a month. Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Mary/Christ the Teacher Conference started a supply closet for non-food essentials in October. The SVDP supply closet distributes personal and household items from 4 to 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at 302 Fisk Ave. in DeKalb. Guests are asked to wear a face mask and practice social distancing. An ID is required to sign in and

receive items. The non-food essentials pantry will distribute bags of necessary household items that are not covered by food assistance programs. Examples of items include laundry supplies, personal and bath supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, diapers and household cleaning supplies. SVDP describes the supply closet as a way to lighten the load of community members “so they can spend their money on other daily essentials.” Volunteer Kathy Dixit said the supply closet is a way to “fill a huge need in the community.” “SNAP or food banks do not allow for these types of items,” she said.

“When St. Vincent had a food pantry, we only had a few of these items, and they were always the first to go. As soon as the items came in, they went out. I think that shows that there has always been a need for these items that has been unmet.” In addition to receiving a bag full of items, recipients can also have extra pick items: deodorant, shampoo, diapers, razors, facial tissue, toothbrushes and more. “So many people don’t have these kinds of things, and it’s an opportunity to have your personal hygiene needs filled,” Dixit said. Donna Brown, president of SVDP, said the supply closet is a way to help people when they need it.

“There is a lot of need, and this is one way to help,” she said. “It’s a way we can be Christ in the community.” In addition to the supply closet, SVDP also offers limited financial assistance for people who may be facing a temporary life crisis, such as eviction or utility shut-off. For assistance, people in need can call the SVDP’s emergency phone number, 815-761-0430, and leave a message. SVDP also has a Christmas program distributing Aldi gift cards to families in need for the holidays. For more information about St. Vincent de Paul Society’s supply closet or to donate supplies or monetarily, visit www.svdpdekalb.org or call 815-200-4730.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – New research and artifacts on Jacob Haish’s barbed wire and other business ventures are turning up in local archival research. Jessi Haish Larue will host an interactive, hands-on experience at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Glidden Homestead. She will discuss new research on Jacob and Sophia Haish found locally. Attendees will be able to examine copies of recently discovered historical items. Also, from noon to 4 p.m., visitors can tour the home where Joseph Glidden and his family lived when he created his most famous invention and see a working onsite blacksmith shop. Programs at Glidden Homestead are made possible in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund. LaRue, a Haish family descendant, is a writer who blogs regularly about Jacob Haish at JacobHaishStory.com. The blog shares photos, interviews and news articles that relate to Haish’s life. LaRue has been documenting her fourth great uncle’s story since early 2016 in an attempt to spread the story of the “underdog of barbed wire.” “Jessi, with her deep understanding of Haish, has recently turned her attention to locally archived documents and records,” Rob Glover, Glidden Homestead executive director, said in a news release. “Even though she’s only in the earliest stages of this line of her research, what she’s already uncovered here is truly remarkable and is something to be seen.”

Jacob Haish was born March 9, 1827, in Germany and came to America in 1835 when he was 9 years old. In his youth, he learned the carpentry trade from his father and “possessed natural mechanical ingenuity and displayed ready aptitude in the use of tools.” At 19, he moved to Illinois and then to DeKalb in 1853 where he entered the lumber business. He built many of the city’s most notable buildings, past and present, including the Glidden Homestead. Haish’s first barbed wire patent is dated Jan. 20, 1874. His “S barb” was patented on Aug. 31, 1875. He followed these with many later designs for wire and other innovative devices. This year’s theme at Glidden Homestead is “A Treasure at 160” since 2021 marks the 160th anniversary of Joseph Glidden’s home. A National Register of Historic Place, it is the home where Glidden lived when he invented barbed wire. The home was extensively remodeled in 1910 by a prominent architect and continued as a Glidden family residence until it became a museum in 1998. A full season of programs highlighting “A Treasure at 160” wraps in December. A program listing can be found at www.gliddenhomestead.org/ events.html. The Glidden Homestead, located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway, is taking reservations for tours. Admission is $4 per adult and free for children younger than 14. LOOKING BACK 1921 – 100 YEARS AGO

Engine trouble developing Monday night in the locomotive at the head of the Spring Valley passenger caused considerable inconvenience to the passengers and crew. The trouble developed at one of the towers not far out of DeKalb and despite anything that could be done the iron horse refused to budge. It was long after midnight when the train finally reached the terminal at Spring Valley. N.D. Gilbert knocked at the fire station door this morning about 12:40 and asked for the fire chief. The boys were all in bed but upon the noise all were ready for a call. Mr. Gilbert informed the chief that there was a little fire in the partition in back of the fireplace in his house and asked him if he could come down and give it attention. The chief took the safety wagon and with a three gallon tank drove to the Gilbert home and soon had the fire out with but slight damage. Honor to the soldier dead of the city, of the state and the nation will be paid by DeKalb people in fitting ceremonies. Fourteen trees are to be planted at Annie’s Woods, honoring 14 heroes who gave their all while in the defense of the flag.

1946 – 75 YEARS AGO

Armistice Day, the anniversary of the Cease Firing order, marked with the first days of dawn the opening of the pheasant and hunting season. In Clare, the frequent crack of gun fire from dawn until dusk on Monday meant casualties to the ring necks. The store in Clare was busy throughout the day serving a slab of cheese or a cut of cold meat between slices of bread with a bottle of cold milk to the hungry men who had tramped over many fields. To most working men the holiday provided a chance to enjoy the pleasure of hunting. The cease firing order is disregarded on November 11 unless the man with a gun has no hunting license. Bernard Selfer, president of the Diamond Wire and Cable Co., said today that production would begin in the Sycamore Plant (the south mill formerly operated for the Signal Corps by Anaconda Wire and Cable Co. during the war) sometime between Dec. 1 and the middle of the month. The organization is being built up and will be completed and announced in a few weeks. All plans are centered on the manufacture of building wire here. Sgt. Charles H. Padden of 210 S. Third St., DeKalb, is presently serving overseas as a radio operator at the Vernam Field, British West Indies, detachment of the AAF’s Airways and Air Communications Service. This service celebrated its eighth anniversary today. Since its beginning in 1938, the AACS has grown into an organization numbering some 13,500 highly trained technicians and specialists. It has furnished the communications facilities and navigational aids which insure the safe flight of AAF pilots, crews and aircraft over worldwide airways. The government reportedly was about ready to junk its ban on two-pants suits and on vests with double-breasted suits. These and most other remaining

wartime clothing restrictions were reported on the way out because the EHC Civilian Production Administration considers them unacceptable without price control. CPA took a step toward decontrol by scrapping its program to increase the output of low-cost clothing. Under this program, manufacturers were compelled to include a large percentage of medium and low price clothing in their total output. According to reliable quarters, orders will be issued soon to remove most of the 40-odd government controls still binding the clothing industry. States Atty. Ross E. Millet enjoyed a sight seldom seen in this part of the country. While looking out of the kitchen window of his new home, which is on the second road north of Sycamore off of Route 23, he saw two deer. The deer, evidently out for a morning romp, took a jump over a large brush pile right in stride. He turned his head momentarily and when he looked back the deer had evidently vanished into thin air as they could not be seen. Just where they came from and where they went is a question. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Anderson were forced to flee from their farm home located about 3 miles north of DeKalb about midnight last night, when flames destroyed the house and all of its contents. The farm is owned by William Rich of DeKalb. The Andersons had resided on the farm since March of this year. A trace of smoke had been noted by the Andersons earlier in the evening but a thorough investigation failed to locate its source. They had retired and shortly before midnight awakened to find the bedroom filled with dense smoke and found it most difficult to find their way out of the house. Having no phone, they hurried to the home of a neighbor where a call was placed for the DeKalb fire department.

The city of DeKalb has called the state’s fire marshal office to determine under what conditions the 31 railroad cars carrying propane gas may be stored in the DeKalb area. The 31 cars are owned by the American Oil Company and are being stored by the Chicago & North-

western Railroad on the railroad’s track near Barber Greene Road. According to a spokesman for the railroad, the company is looking for an alternate site. The razing of old Stevens Wing of Sycamore Municipal Hospital and a slow-up on other phases of its replacement program were confirmed at the meeting of the hospital’s board of directors. The razing of the now-closed Stevens Wing is scheduled to begin this week. Protano Crane and Demolition Service, DeKalb, has been contracted to complete the razing by the end of the month for $7,360. According to Leland Fire Chief Lester Miller, a farm fire southeast of Leland on the Roy Reeder farm was definitely arson. A barn on the farm that had been blown down several years ago, was noticed on fire by a passerby about 9:30 p.m. who went to neighbors to call the fire department at Leland. The family who reside on the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Goken were away at the time.

A Sycamore Junior High School geography teacher Mark Anderson led residents of the DeKalb County Nursing Home on a tour of the world. The senior citizens have been going back to school to study geography as part of cooperative, outreach program with the school which includes the use of computer models and contact with students. The historic 1921 Glidden Wing of the Barb City Manor Retirement Home in DeKalb is undergoing renovation. The glass block, wood siding and cement block that was part of the wing of the former Joseph F. Glidden Hospital building on South First Street has been removed. What were the screen porches during the early days of the building are now being remodeled into sun rooms for the residents of the manor, and new windows will enclose the sun rooms and match the ones on the main portion of the Glidden Wing. These changes will restore the historic look of the building. – Compiled by Sue Breese

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – A virtual STEM Café will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, to explore the connections between art and science. Northern Illinois University art education faculty member Kelly Gross and artist and STEAM teacher Jolien Genus will present “Artistic Process and Scientific Principles: Art as a Process of Investigation.” These two artists and educators will discuss how they engage in hypothesizing, documenting and interpreting scientific principles in the art-making process, and they’ll answer questions from the audience. This online STEM Café is free and open to the public and will take place via Zoom. Register and find more information at go.niu.edu/stemcafes. Gross, who holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in art education, as well as a bachelor’s degree in industrial design, will share stories from her artist residency at the DuPage Children’s Museum, where she led children in projects exploring light, shadow and storytelling. While engaging in hands-on art projects with students, Gross used the experience to conduct research into

ate school to the Peace Corps and Hawaii. As a STEAM educator with master’s degrees in both art and social work, Genus brings a unique perspective. His artworks investigate the relationship between painting and STEM and the relationship between art and the social work theory of Person-in-Environment. Genus teaches his students to reflect on the trash they generate by looking at the effects of the North Pacific Garbage Patch on their island of O’ahu. He has also explored the interconnections of humans and the environment during his 15-year evolution as a painter and artist rooted in Hawaii who uses safe, sustainable materials to create bold works. Metro Creative

How active seniors can protect their vision METRO CREATIVE Retirement may be seen as a time to slow down and enjoy some wellearned rest and relaxation, but today’s seniors clearly did not get the memo. Modern seniors look and act a lot different than traditional depictions of retirees. The shift in attitudes regarding aging is noticeable in the growth of active retirement communities, which are designed for aging men and women who want to engage in activities where no chairs are required. Active seniors may not fit outdated stereotypes of cardigan-clad grandparents shuffling about dusty retirement homes, but even the most energetic retirees may still be vulnerable to age-related health complications. For example, the American Optometric Association notes that men and women over the age of 60 may be vulnerable to age-related vision problems. A certain degree of vision loss is natural as men and women age, but that doesn’t mean active seniors have to sit idly by. In fact, there are many ways for active seniors to protect their vision so they can continue to get up and go without having to worry about losing their eyesight. • Make your diet work for you. The AOA notes that a number of eye diseases can develop after an individual turns 60, and some of these conditions can be minimized with wise lifestyle choices. For example, a healthy, nutrient-rich diet can protect vision

over the long haul. The National Council On Aging notes that studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in foods like spinach, kale and salmon, can reduce individuals’ risk for age-related eye diseases. Seniors can speak with their physicians about other ways to utilize diet to combat age-related vision problems. • Protect your eyes and look cool at the same time. Active seniors spend lots of time outdoors, and that may have an adverse effect on their vision. The NCOA notes that lengthy exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause both short- and long-term eye damage. Thankfully, such issues are easily avoided if seniors wear sunglasses with UV protection when going outside. Brimmed hats also can protect the eyes from harmful UV rays. • Be mindful of screen time. Much has been made of how much screen time is healthy for young people. But seniors also are not immune to the potentially harmful effects of spending too much time staring at their phones and other devices. The NCOA recommends seniors employ the 20-20-20 rule in regard to screen usage. Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This quick exercise can reduce eye strain. An active lifestyle benefits seniors in myriad ways. Seniors should take steps to protect their vision so they can continue to get up and go long after they retire.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – More than 100 DeKalb schoolchildren will feel a little warmer this winter after DeKalb teachers and firefighters teamed up for their annual winter clothing drive. The giveaway was held by the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’s Association and the DeKalb Fire Department in conjunction with the national nonprofit Operation Warm. In its eighth year, the event was held Nov. 6 at the DeKalb Fire Station, distributing 130 new coats to children in DeKalb District 428 schools, said Noah Millard of the DeKalb Fire Fighters Local 1236 union. Millard said the children are chosen by their teachers and were able to come to the fire station themselves. “We invited the families to come in, let them do it together and pick out their own,” Millard said. “It’s great to see the support from the community in so many different ways.” Millard said the event has grown since its inception. Cumulatively, organizers were able to donate more than 1,000 coats over the past eight years, he said. During 2020’s giving season with the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers, educators and DeKalb firefighters brought the giveaway directly to the children. “It was a little bit of a hybrid, but we went out and tried to go to the communities the teachers had identified,” Millard said of 2020. “We went out to Univer-

Historic clock rededicated on Veterans Day By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com

DeKALB – History was made and commemorated in DeKalb on Nov. 11. A rededication ceremony of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Clock was held in conjunction with a full military ceremony for Veterans Day. Guest speakers included DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes, state Rep. Jeff Keicher, R-Sycamore, and DeKalb American Legion Post 66 Commander Manny Olade. “Veterans Day is about honoring people who have served something larger than themselves,” said Barnes, who is a U.S. Army veteran. “We celebrate our country, even with its flaws and struggles, and continue to develop that ideal of the American Dream and the United States of America.” The clock, built in 1920 by E. Howard & Company of Boston, was originally dedicated Feb. 13, 1921, at the First Methodist Church in DeKalb. Several hundred people crowded into the church with about 500 turned away because of a lack of space. About 100 people attended the rededication ceremony on Nov. 11. Through the years, the clock has had four locations, was struck by lightning twice and has been hit by a truck and a car. The clock was moved to Memorial Park, at the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb, and rededicated Nov. 11, 1996. On Nov. 11, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the clock’s newest rededication. U.S. Air Force veteran Michael Embrey, who emceed

Since last winter, the Rotary Club and the American Legion Post 66 has been fundraising to restore the clock. The Rotary Club, Legion post and clock are each celebrating 100 years of existence in 2021. “The clock has been moved, hit by a car and lightning and painted a few times, but it has always remained a symbol of the city and a memorial to those that served our country,” Corr said. “Our clock truly is something special. … Clock specialists have said that it is something that belongs in a museum. It’s something we should be very proud of.” Although the clock was structurally sound, its mechanisms were not working. It needed mechanical repairs and historic restoration, including solving leakage problems, removing rust and placing stainless steel bolts. The cost of fixing the clock’s interior mechanisms was about $7,000, and painting and restoring the exterior of the clock cost between $15,000 and $16,000. Roger Keys, who restored the clock with his historic restoration business R.W. Keys and Son, also helped restore the clock 25 years ago. Automotive paint and a clear coat finish were applied to help the color

remain vibrant through the years. The clock’s paint is a custom color created to match paint drippings found inside the clock from its original 1920 shade. Olade, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, described the clock as “a visual display for DeKalb veterans.” “‘Veteran’ is a title we carry with us the rest of our lives,” he said. “Every veteran has contributed to the freedoms we all share.” American Legion Post 66 Chaplin Mike Giuliano led a ceremony prayer, and Crain Goodman led the crowd of about 100 people in singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The song was also sung during the clock’s original dedication ceremony in 1921. The ceremony ended with a full military tribute by the DeKalb American Legion Honor Guard to honor deceased veterans and the playing of “Taps” by Embrey. A time capsule to be opened in 50 years will be placed inside the clock at a later date, and new plaques will be added to the base of the clock to thank donors who helped raise money for the restoration. A plaque on the clock was restored. It reads: “May the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice live forever in the hearts of the people,” and includes a quote by President Theodore Roosevelt: “To all those who have paid with their bodies for their soul’s desire.”

Support needed for ’Tis the Season musical campaign

DeKALB – Just Make It Happen Inc. invites DeKalb County service clubs, churches, performance arts advocates and citizens to support the annual ‘Tis the Season live music project that runs through Dec. 3. The project brings musical programs performed by the Kishwaukee Brass Quintet to six DeKalb County preschools. JMIH enjoys encouraging children, parents and grandparents to enjoy memorable seasonal music. The quintet offers a huge library of holiday favorites including classic hits like “Carol of the Bells,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Sussex Carol.” Citizens, businesses and service clubs are invited to become a one-third or full financial partner with the JMIH’s Wurlitzer Foundation Music Education grant. In addition, the ‘Tis the Season campaign offers community outreach programs for seniors, the homeless, those in jail, cancer center patients and people in business. JMIH invites financial partners to underwrite various concerts.

Past ‘Tis the Season events have included performances at the DeKalb Farm Bureau, DeKalb County Jail, Hope Haven, Ellwood House, Northern Illinois University, Barb City Manor and private parties. For information, visit www.justmakeithappen-dekalb.com or email john@justmakeithappen-dekalb.com.
