WEEK IN REVIEW Starbucks to be built in front of Meijer By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Despite recent updates from Sycamore city officials to the contrary, a developer with First Midwest Group confirmed last week a Starbucks is headed into the space being built in front of Meijer grocery store on Peace Road. Mark Robinson, chief operating officer of First Midwest Group, which also built the Meijer, confirmed the news at a DeKalb City Council meeting Nov. 29. Robinson was speaking to the DeKalb council in pursuit of a plan to build a self-storage unit facility at 1700 Sycamore Road in DeKalb in the space formerly known as Eagle Shopping Center. The council approved the plan unanimously.
Robinson brought up the Starbucks in his appeal to the council, talking about the efforts to bring development to the area. “We brought you the Meijer center on Peace Road, and we’re putting a Starbucks up there now, the Jiffy Lube next to it,” Robinson said to the DeKalb city council. “With retail spaces there, and we just built a road behind them to add more on the end. So our intention is to bring good development to the city.” In an interview after his remarks, Robinson confirmed the popular Seattle-based coffee chain Starbucks will go into the space, though a timeline isn’t clear yet. He said development may be delayed due to ongoing supply chain shortages through the spring. No set date for opening has been announced, he said.
It will be the third stand-alone Starbucks in the area, following the ones on Sycamore Road in front of the Target in DeKalb and near Northern Illinois University campus on West Lincoln Highway. There are also satellite Starbucks inside the Holmes Student Center on NIU campus, inside of Target in DeKalb and Meijer in Sycamore. A week ago, John Sauter, Sycamore building and engineering director, said the City of Sycamore hadn’t yet received any permit applications for any inside build-outs for the building. East Winnebago Development Corporation out of Rockford – more commonly known as First Midwest Group – currently owns the property, according to DeKalb County property records.
DeKalb police Citizens’ Review Board chosen By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A former city alderman, former DeKalb School District 428 administrator and former member of the city’s Human Relations Commission are among those selected to join the city’s first Citizens’ Review Board, tasked with deliberating over police misconduct cases. Five DeKalb residents were chosen Nov. 29 by an unanimous city council vote, after appointment recommendations were made by DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes. The board will review misconduct cases, including instances of use of force, for officers in the DeKalb Police Department. The members will be: Justin Carlson, who will serve a one-year term; Maurice McDavid, former Dean of Students at

DeKalb High School and former Cortland Elementary School assistant principal, will serve a one-year term. Former 5th Ward Alderman Kate Noreiko will serve a twoyear term; Veronica Origel will serve a two-year term. And John Walker, who formerly sat on the City of DeKalb’s Human Relations Commission and resigned recently to pursue an appointment to the review board, will serve a two-year term. Ward 3 Alderman Tracy Smith and Ward 6 Alderman Mike Verbic were absent from the meeting. “Thanks for choosing to serve,” said Barnes to Carlson, who was in the audience during the vote. “That’s fantastic.” The review board will have access to police reports, field notes, body and squad car camera footage and more to determine a case.

While the board won’t have policy-making power or final say over disciplinary decisions, city officials reiterated earlier this month that the new Citizens’ Review Board for the DeKalb Police Department is a step in the right direction to public accountability amid a nationwide reckoning on law enforcement rekindled in 2020. The board will meet at least six times per year, and will be tasked with deliberating over claims that an officer violated the DeKalb Police Department’s “use of force” policies. The board will recommend steps for disciplinary action if necessary, or changes to the department’s training or other relevant procedures. It will be the police chief’s final say whether disciplinary actions are imposed, documents state.

The DeKalb Public Transit System will run a special bus Thursday, Dec. 2, to take families to see Santa’s arrival downtown to kick off the holiday season.
DeKalb offers free bus to downtown festivities THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Transit System will run a special bus to take families to see Santa’s arrival downtown to kick off the holiday season. The fare-free bus is being put into service especially for the Lights on Lincoln: Santa Comes to Town event on Dec. 2, according to a news release. The bus will service approximately 50 bus stops throughout DeKalb with the bus arriving at Van Buer Plaza to see Santa illuminate the downtown holiday lights at 6 p.m. All stops along the route will be marked with fliers to indicate where passengers can board the bus. The route is being added this year to ensure that all families can participate in this annual holiday event. “DeKalb Public Transit is thrilled to be a part of this year’s Lights on Lincoln: Santa Comes to Town event,” DeKalb Public Transit Manager Marcus Cox said in the news release. “To join in on the festivities, the inside of the bus will be decorated so that passengers can enjoy the holiday spirit
throughout the night.” Beginning at 5 p.m., the bus will stop at various locations including: Seventh and Grove streets, Annie Glidden Road and Crane Drive, Varsity Boulevard and Regent Drive, Suburban Apartments on Twombly Road, Normal Road and Hillcrest Drive, Pleasant and 10th streets, 14th Street and East Dresser Road, and Seventh and Lewis streets. There will then be two round trips to take families home beginning at 7 p.m. The full schedule is posted above. It is also available on the city’s website, cityofdekalb.com. On the night of the event, riders can track the special bus on the city’s bus tracker: dekalbpublic. etaspot.net. Those who come out to the event, hosted by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants and City of DeKalb, will hear carolers and children will be able to visit with Santa at his house at North Second and Locust streets. The downtown holiday lights are being supported by a grant from ComEd and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.

ON THE RECORD ... with Beck Garcia Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com DeKALB – Beck Garcia describes himself as “always having been passionate about helping others.” This holiday season, Garcia is collecting items for a supply drive through the newly created organization, DeKalb Mutual Aid. Garcia, 25, is DeKalb Mutual Aid’s executive director and has organized the drive and a free giveaway celebration event for the community. DeKalb Mutual Aid is hosting the supply drive through Dec. 14. Items being collected include new and gently used clothing, books and toys. To schedule an item pickup, call 815-217-1645. The donations will be distributed during an event to be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the University Village Community Room in the University Village Office Building, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. Items also can be dropped off the day of the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the event location. The DeKalb County Health Department will be at the event from 3 to 8 p.m. with COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots, as well as medical insurance information about Marketplace for Medicaid and Medicare. Beck Garcia is the executive director of DeKalb Mutual Aid. Education and Basics DeKalb County will donate books and DeKalb County Community Gardens will give away 50 pre-packed boxes containing a variety of fresh produce at the event. DeKalb Mutual Aid is awaiting its 501c3 nonprofit status and can only accept items, not monetary donations at this time. Although the group has only three official members and about 10 volunteers, Garcia describes DeKalb Mutual Aid as “a group doing a lot with a small number of people.”
MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton spoke with Garcia about the organization and the upcoming event. Milton: How did DeKalb Mutual Aid start? Garcia: It started about a month ago. My friends and I started an organization centered around mutual aid, where we collect items people don’t want and give the items to people who do. … It’s a community grassroots organization. We saw a need and started a group. We hope to do even bigger things and host more events in the future. Our goal is to make the community more open, more accessible to everyone. Milton: What is mutual aid? Garcia: Mutual aid is an act of solidarity through a voluntary reciprocal exchange of resources and services. … Examples of items we hope to give out include clothes, kids’ toys and cleaning and hygiene supplies. Milton: What is the goal of the holiday supply drive? Garcia: The holiday supply drive and the event will help make sure parents have something for their kids for the holidays. There will be a giveaway of items, an opportunity to see Santa, if that’s the holiday you celebrate. Other organizations will also be involved and have donated items as well, such as
The History of James Taylor and Carly Simon
DeKalb County Community Gardens donating boxes of produce. Milton: Are there any items that are still needed? Garcia: We need mens’ clothing, toys, children’s clothes and baby boy clothes. We have a lot of women’s clothing and baby girl clothes. We just ask all donations be new or gently used. If you contact us before the event, we will come pick up your items. You can also donate items the morning of the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the event location. Milton: What is the goal of DeKalb Mutual Aid? Garcia: We’re trying to build equity within the community. DeKalb is pretty segregated when it comes to class. When there’s a need, there’s a big need. Our goal is to help bridge that gap to help those in need. Milton: Why did you establish DeKalb Mutual Aid? Garcia: It’s important for me to get involved in any way I can to make sure everyone’s needs are met. If there’s an injustice happening, I can’t sit back and let it happen. That’s why I formed DeKalb Mutual Aid. For more information, call 815-2171645.

THE MIDWEEK The Beth Fowler Dance Company and Beth Fowler School of Dance will renew a local holiday tradition this weekend, as they celebrate their return to the live stage, and again usher in the magic of the holiday season, presenting “The Nutcracker.” For more than a quarter century, the Beth Fowler dancers and artists, from beginners to professionals, have taken the stage for nights of beauty and wonder, during this annual production to open the dance company’s performance season. The Beth Fowler Dance Company will perform four shows at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb, from Friday, Dec. 3, to Sunday, Dec. 5. The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live theater throughout the nation, Beth Fowler, artistic director and owner of the Beth Fowler School of Dance, opted to reimagine the long-running stage production as a feature film, to enable all BFSD dancers to once more experience the magic of performing, but in a controlled, safe environment. After producing and screening “The Nutcracker Movie” in January 2021, the

Brooke Bend, of St. Charles, will dance the role of the Snow Queen. “Snow Queen has been my dream role since I began doing Nutcracker,” Bend said in a news release. “I love the music and how beautiful the dance is, and especially how pretty it is when the snow falls from the ceiling.”
Bend will partner with the Snow King, portrayed by Jack Goings, of Augusta, Wisconsin. Goings, now entering his final semester at Northern Illinois University, has acted and danced professionally in productions in Chicago and elsewhere in Illinois and Wisconsin. Fowler hired Goings in 2020 to dance the role of Snow King in the filmed “Nutcracker Movie.” “I enjoyed working with the studio and all of the talented performers, choreographers and Beth Fowler herself so much that when she asked if I would be a part of the Nutcracker this year, of course, I said yes,” Goings said. The cast will be led by Clara Owen, of St. Charles, who will dance her namesake role of Clara. Owen said she is excited to share her take on this iconic role. Beth Fowler Dance Company alumnus Jacob Bliujus, formerly of Sycamore, has returned to dance the role of The Nutcracker Prince. BFDC dancer Emily Fox, of St. Charles, will dance the haunting and iconic role of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Ben Christian, of Sycamore, will dance the role of Fritz. BFDC alumnus and current BFSD instructor Jen Flatland, of Hampshire, will dance the role of Arabian Queen,
accompanied by Brandon Fowler, as the Arabian King. Abby Lewis, of St. Charles, will portray the Rose Queen, leading the show-stopping Waltz of the Flowers. Addie Funke, of St. Charles, will play the Rat King, who duels with the Nutcracker Prince. Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara’s toymaker godfather, will be portrayed by Vincent J. Augustine, of Aurora. Other members of the cast include company soloists in various roles and students from the Beth Fowler School of Dance in children’s roles. Choreography is by Beth Fowler, assisted by Brooke Fowler. Original choreography in the grand pas de deux is by Lev Ivanos. Reserve tickets can be purchased in advance. Ticket prices range from $24$29 for adults and $15-$20 for children age 12 and younger. All children’s tickets include a “Meet & Greet” backstage after the show, for a keepsake photo with the cast. Guests can come to the front of the stage after the performance to be escorted on stage behind the main curtain. To purchase tickets, visit www.BethFowlerDanceCompany.com. Tickets are also available at the door beginning one hour before each performance.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Tours of decorated Ellwood House run through Dec. 12 By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com
D
eKALB – Before decorating their own homes for the holidays, friends Lois Miller and Sue Guio, both of DeKalb, have been spending their free time decorating the Ellwood House Museum. Members of Hillcrest Covenant Church in DeKalb, the two women and volunteers from the church helped decorate the entry door, main hallway and rotunda of the Ellwood House, 409 N. First St. in DeKalb. About 20 rooms inside the home built in 1879 were decorated for the holidays by 17 organizations and volunteer groups from the community. This year’s decorating color scheme is blue, white and silver. “I usually decorate my house Scandinavian for the holidays, and decorating the Ellwood House is a much bigger venue,” Miller said. “It’s also fun getting to work with other people and being creative together,” said Guio. “Every room is different, and it’s nice to see how other groups decorate every year.” Guided tours are offered by appointment at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays until Dec. 12. To book a tour, call 815-756-4609 or visit Eventbrite.com at least one day in advance of your intended visit. Tours begin in the visitor center, located behind the mansion. Each tour lasts approximately one hour. After the tour, each group is welcome to explore two floors of exhibits in the visitor center galleries. Face masks and social distancing are required when inside the Ellwood House and the visitor center. Hand sanitizer will be provided. The annual Holiday Traditions Weekend will be held Dec. 3-5. Visitors must reserve their entry time in advance for a self-guided tour. Docents and volunteers will be in each room to guide the way and share history. Tickets for all tours cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 17 and free for children age 5 and younger and for museum members. Highlights of the decorated mansion include a 12-foot tree in the living room, handmade crafts in the basement hallway made by all 180 DeKalb School District second-grade students, a global-themed laundry room decorated by Northern Illinois University’s Network of Nations, a peacock-themed bedroom and bathroom decorated by Anna-Marie Zurlinden and her mother, a dainty feminine bedroom nicknamed “Patty’s Room” decorated in pink by the Genoa Guest House and a festive third floor ballroom decorated by the DeKalb Area Garden club featuring artificial sweets and treats on display. Brian Reis, Ellwood House executive director, said the money raised from tours will help repair the mansion, including repairing wooden balus-

trades on the exterior of the house and indoor restoration work. Reis was told that historically restoring the mansion will cost approximately $5 million. “After not being able to hold the event last year due to the pandemic, I think everyone decorated a little bit more than usual this year,” Reis said. “Every year, we have a new decorating color scheme, so it’s never the same. It’s always different, so people want to come back to see the house.”
Reis described the holiday tours as “a fun and festive way to learn about the Ellwood family and DeKalb history.” “It also helps you get into the holiday spirit,” he said. “This tradition would not be possible without the volunteers, organizations, groups and clubs that decorate. It’s a way for them to get the word out about what they do as well as celebrate the holidays creatively and festively with the community.”

SOMONAUK – Mark Tuttle’s fifth generation family farm in Somonauk will be featured during an upcoming WTTW television special, “Beyond Chicago from the Air.” The show will air at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, and again at 9 p.m. on WTTW. It also can be seen online at www.wttw.com. Additional upcoming airdates are also listed on the website. Drone footage, which was completed over the summer, includes the Tuttles’ fields, including their wheat, corn and soybean crops, their farm buildings and barns, livestock and farm machinery. Tuttle said it was a lot of fun to participate in the show and he hopes “people will find a lot of interest and value in it.” “It’s more than seeing beautiful farmland, the colors, rolling terrain and our rural agricultural area,” Tuttle said. “I think it will give people a better perspective of what farming is all about.” The show, described as a “high-flying panoramic exploration of iconic landmarks and little-known treasures across and beyond Illinois,” uses drone photography and video to capture Illinois towns, parks, railroads, water-

All of the show’s original footage is shot entirely with a drone. The show is a sequel to “Chicago from the Air,” which was released last year. Eddie Griffin, producer and director of “Beyond Chicago from the Air,” described the show as a way to go beyond the boundaries of Chicago to highlight more of Illinois. The special includes overhead views, as well as the history, of the Eternal Indian statue of Chief Black
Hawk in Oregon, the Cahokia Mounds, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Starved Rock, the lock and hydroelectric dam in Lockport, the Naperville Riverwalk, the Farnsworth House in Plano, working steam trains in Union, up close views of wind turbines and more. Geoffrey Baer, the show’s narrator, writer and executive producer, said that sometimes Chicagoans “may not realize that there’s a whole other state of Illinois” outside the city.

“You can drive an hour outside of Chicago and you’re in an entirely different realm,” Baer said. “Illinois is primarily a farm state, but you wouldn’t know that if you don’t venture outside of the city,” he said. “I’ve been doing shows for about 25 years, and I never talked about farmland. It was really fun researching the fact that we’re the top soybean producer in the nation and what other crops are grown in Illinois.” Baer said one of his goals in creating the show is the “I never knew that phenomenon.” “I hear from people all the time … I’ve lived here all my life and never knew that,” Baer said. “Or I’ve walked by that building 100 times, but I never knew that. Well, that just takes that further.” Griffin said the show is more than a tour program, guiding viewers throughout parts of the state. “We were careful not to make this a travelogue show,” Griffin said. “We have the story be the backbone, which is why all these places are featured in the show, because they contribute to a broader story. That story is sort of universal and shared by people across all counties of Illinois because it is the story of Illinois.”

9 ing, open to the public, will concern plans for a planned unit development by Joe Katz along the proposed Hillcrest extension. A committee was formed in September by the city council to negotiate with Katz on the price for the land needed to construct the extension of Hillcrest Drive from First Street to Garden Road.
According to the “Twenty Years Ago” column in the Chicago Evening Post of last Saturday night one important news item was the courthouse fight between DeKalb and Sycamore. The Chicago Post has this to say in the column: Courthouse fight is on in DeKalb County. DeKalb wants the plum and Sycamore is lining up to retain it. DeKalb has raised $40,000, with another $20,000 promised, to aid in erecting a new building. The county board has already appropriated $100,000 for a new structure without specifying its location. The courthouse was located at Sycamore half a century age and cost $9,000. Bitro-Phosphate feeds the nerves and old people need it to make them feel and look younger. It’s the one best nerve builder for weak, nerve-exhausted men and women and that is why H. E. Secor guarantees it. Youngsters of the school, many of them proving good salesmen are busy this week selling Red Cross Christmas Seals, the money received from the sales to go toward fighting the great white plague. Seventy-seven and onehalf percent of all funds realized from the sale of these seals is retained in DeKalb County for the fight against the plague. George Bartlett of the bank, has been doing a lot of repair work about this property at the corner this fall, and the latest acquirement is a cozy little garage fo ra recently purchased Ford sedan. Bartlett has spent considerable time about the place himself and also had carpenters and cement contractors at work. The result is that he has his property fixed up just the way he wants it and it will indeed make a nice home for him and his family. Edward Jordan, 14 years old, who three weeks ago enjoyed the comforts and companionship of his father and mother, but is today an orphan, returned to Chicago yesterday with his grandmother, where he will make his home. The mother passed away about three weeks ago after a long illness. The father was taken sick a couple of weeks later, developing pneumonia, with his death quickly followed. The little house on South Fifth Street has been broken up and Edward is thus given over to the care of his grandmother.
Once upon a time there lived in DeKalb, a homemaker who numbered among her friends Winnie-the-pooh, Snoopy, Eeyore the donkey and numerous big brown teddy bears. Mrs. John D. Smith still numbers all these creatures among her friends, for she is busy as an elf this Christmas season making stuffed animals for the Women’s Society of Christian Service bazaar, which will be held Thursday. Sycamore Road is pictured in 1941.
Country roads are almost impassable in many places, while in other spots, it is impossible for an automobile to get through, is the report of DeKalb people who are compelled to drive their machines into the country to any extent. Some of the farmers of the community have endeavored to build up the roads adjoining their property, but due to the wagon traffic and heavy machine travel, the cinders are quickly pushed to the side of the road.
1946 – 75 YEARS AGO
Even though the Northern Illinois State Teachers College was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, the school had its excitement yesterday afternoon. Two young men passing the building noted the smoke coming out of the windows in the tower. DeKalb firemen quickly extinguished the blaze that was caused by a short in an electrical conduit. Firemen were able to work without the student congestion that would have resulted under ordinary conditions. Ideal Industries Inc., announced today that work has been started on the preparation of a large addition to the parking lot at the firm’s main plant. The new lot, made necessary by Ideal’s rapid growth, will more than double the parking area to the east of the plant. It is estimated that the combined parking lots will hold approximately 130 cars when the new lot is completed. The new
lot is located on the field east of the plant, which Ideal purchased last spring. In some spots a cut of at least three feet was made in order to provide a level ground for parking. Dianne Mathre, the young DeKalb girl and student at the DeKalb Township High School who has appeared on the Quiz Kids program in the past, has been invited to be a guest on the program this Sunday. A special program is being presented in connection with the opening of the International Livestock Show and Miss Mathre, originally on the program as a representative of the Four-H group, is being recalled to represent the rural young people of the nation. Seventeen pianos, made at the DeKalb plant of the Wurlitzer organization in DeKalb, and weighing nearly three and a half tons, made a flying trip from Chicago to the West Coast during the present week. The pianos, fresh from the production line in DeKalb, were trucked directly from the plant in DeKalb to the Chicago Municipal Airport on Tuesday evening. There they were loaded into a U. S. Airline service plane and arrived at the San Francisco airport early on Wednesday morning.
1971 – 50 YEARS AGO
A special meeting to discuss the extension of Hillcrest Drive will be held by the DeKalb City Council. The meet-
Ground will be broken soon south of Genoa for the first unit of a Sheltered Village, which when completed will house retired or semi-retired persons. Final papers will be completed this week for the sale of three acres of land south of Ada-Lor Heights Subdivision on Route 23. Sheltered Village is the name of the proposed building project and it is explained as a rehabilitation facility for ambulatory adults.
1996 – 25 YEARS AGO
The DeKalb Fire Department once again began their Red Wreath Program on Thanksgiving Day by hanging Christmas wreaths, decorated with red bulbs and bows, at each of their three fire stations. The program was initiated in 1986 by the International Association of Firefighters. The wreaths, traditionally displayed Thanksgiving Day through Jan 1, are initially adorned with red bulbs. With each emergency incident relating to the holiday season, a red bulb is then replaced with a white one. Last year, two white bulbs were added to the wreaths, due to two structure fires. Just in time for Thanksgiving, the City of DeKalb received a letter of gratitude from its new sister city of Ostroh, Ukraine. The Sycamore City Council, holding the line with several past decisions, has again turned down the park district’s request to sell beer and wine in its clubhouse and on the golf course.

Stage Coach Players to collect gifts for holiday giving
DeKALB – Stage Coach Players is collecting toys for the giving tree sponsored by the DeKalb Salvation Army and gifts for people age 55 and older serviced by Family Service Agency. As families in the community have trouble putting food on the table, many children and adults may also go this holiday season without holiday gifts. To lend a hand, community members can stop by Stage Coach Theatre, take a tag and then return the tag with a gift. Each tag has suggested gifts listed. To donate, bring items to Stage Coach Theatre, 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb. The distribution of tags and collection of gifts will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Dec. 4 and 11. The SCP Outreach Committee will be in the back of the theater to welcome and thank people for their donations. Guests are asked to wear a mask when picking up or dropping off donations. THE MIDWEEK The last Brown Bag/Local Lore program of the year will feature Norm Moline, a retired professor from Augusta College, who will present “Binding Our State Together: 200 Years of Canals, Railroads, Postal Service, Interurbans, and Roads” on Dec. 2. Moline, an Illinois Humanities Roads Scholar speaker, will explore Illinois’ fascinating transportation history. “When Illinois became a state in 1818, it was a sparsely settled and minimally connected place,” Moline said in a news release. “Over the next 200 years, it was transformed to a place with an amazing set of linkages.” Moline will review the contributions of different forms of transportation, adding points which may not be familiar even to history enthusiasts, but the key is the important cumulative
effect of these connections in our history. Attendees will receive detailed timeline handouts. The talk will complement the History Center’s current exhibit, “History of DeKalb County in 100 Objects,” which features information about the impact of the railroad in DeKalb County. The Brown Bag/Local Lore program is sponsored by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund. Moline’s talk is also made possible by an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar grant. This program will be held at noon Thursday, Dec. 2. Visitors can participate in-person or remotely. To register, visit dekalbcountyhistory.org and click on the link at the bottom of the homepage. The History Center is located at 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore. For more information, email info@dekalbcountyhistory.org or call 815895-5762.

Valley West manager honored with patriotic award THE MIDWEEK Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital manager Ashley Brown, a registered nurse, is the recipient of the Patriotic Employer Award. The honor, presented by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, recognizes employers who support the National Guard and Reserve Force. Brown, who is manager of patient care, medical/ surgical and intensive care unit, was nominated by staff nurse and National Guard member Ronald McCaslin, a registered nurse. During a ceremony at Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital on Nov. 5, leaders and staff applauded as McCaslin presented Brown with the Patriotic Employer Award pin. “This service member has been gone sporadically throughout the past year supporting the Marine Corps mission, war fighting readiness and for COVID-19 support. My manager has been nothing short of accommodating and supportive to me,” McCaslin wrote in the nomination letter. “Despite missing several days on orders, she has regularly checked in with me and made sure that my family and I were taken care of. She is 100% committed to supporting the U.S. military and its service members.” Mike Holub, vice chair of the Illinois committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve presented Brown with a certificate honoring her for “contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employees participating in America’s National Guard and
