WEEK IN REVIEW Incentives added to attract 428 bus drivers By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In an effort to entice more people to become school bus drivers for DeKalb School District 428, the district’s service provider, First Student, is increasing sign-on and referral bonuses, among other plans. Ladel Cass, area general manager of First Student, which contracts with the district, said routes which were halted in October amid the shortages and a COVID19 outbreak have since resumed. The company also hired six drivers, bringing the total to 74 currently, who operate 76 routes around the DeKalb area. “Our total driver goal is 84, which does include eight standby drivers,” Cass said Tuesday. “To be full on a given day we need 76 drivers to complete all routes suc-
cessfully, a.m. and p.m.” First Student also used five licensed district staff to pick up route shortages in DeKalb, and has three on-call drivers. Four drivers are undergoing training now. “So we do maintain a pipeline going forward,” Cass said. “And we do expect I think up to three that will license before the holidays.” The school bus company, which provides drivers to a number of school districts throughout northern Illinois including the Chicago area, is also rolling out a number of monetary incentives in an attempt to entice more people to join their ranks. Cass said the company has also been in negotiations with school bus driver unions regarding wages. “Overall our driver monitor compensation has increased 15%, mostly drive by
wage increase,” Cass said. The new driver sign-off bonus was increased this summer from $1,000 to $2,500, and will be increased again Jan. 1 to $5,000, Cass said. New bus monitor sign-on bonuses will also increase to $1,000, as will referrals. New drivers can expect the money to be paid out incrementally to ensure retention, he said. A new $500 quarterly bonus will be added for all First Student employees also. “The hope there is that we actually improve attendance at the location and we actually reward the people that are there every day providing service to the district,” Cass said. A DeKalb-based team of recruiters also is on hand to solicit candidates. “We’ve been utilizing things like door hangers, mailers, job fairs, social media, other canvassing,” Cass said.
Somonauk, Leland school districts eye consolidation By DEREK BARICHELLO
dbarichello@shawmedia.com If all goes to plan, the Somonauk Leland Community Unit School District will start classes in August 2023. A referendum must pass in both Somonauk and Leland school districts, however, for it to come to fruition, officials told a crowd of more than 100 that gathered Dec. 16 for a town hall meeting at Somonauk High School gymnasium. The referendum is scheduled June 28. Somonauk and Leland board members say they hope to get a jump start on consolidation, before the state enacts a law that can potentially force one. A motivating factor is remedying a teacher shortage, said Somonauk Board President

Mike Short. A consolidated district would be able to offer more courses and extracurricular programs. No school buildings would be demolished and no staff would be cut. Staff reductions would be made through attrition, meaning when teachers retire or leave for new positions, that’s when decisions would be made on whether to fill those vacancies, Short said. The state of Illinois would provide $1.1 million for the consolidation. These funds would go toward aligning existing contracts with staff, transportation costs and other immediate costs of the consolidation. Savings would eventually be realized through needing just one superintendent, one athletics director, one audit, being

able to purchase services as one entity and adjusting staffing through attrition. Property taxpayers would see a slight decrease in the rate, Short said. The committee charged with planning the consolidation foresees using each of the school’s buildings, meaning students may require about a 10-minute bus ride between the communities. Students would be taken to their local schools, then transported between schools. The committee is seeking community input on how to best utilize each school, proposing both plans that put students together based on their grade levels and/ or based on their hometown. The committee’s goals include keeping Leland’s school open and setting up a daycare location in both communities.

ON THE RECORD ... with Janet Gallagher

MALTA – On the first day of the new year, Janet Gallagher will be in California for the Rose Parade. But instead of spectating, Gallagher, an associate professor of horticulture at Kishwaukee College, will be one of three parade float judges for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, and will be broadcast internationally. This year’s theme – “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” – focuses on how education can open doors and change lives. Gallagher, a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers, joins J. Keith White, AIFD designer and instructor at the Houston School of Flowers, and John Piper, former vice president of the Macy’s Parade Studio, on this year’s list of float judges. The three will grant 24 float awards based on three categories: float design, floral presentation and entertainment value. Gallagher spoke with MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about the Rose Bowl and being selected as a judge.
students about the experience. Milton: What will your judging experience be like? Gallagher: It will be very secretive. I will have two people with me at all times and carry around a binder. No photos of the floats will be allowed before the parade. I will be very professional at all times and show no favoritism. I fly out on Dec. 28 and will have orientation and training. I’ll spend a couple of days evaluating the floats, and my husband and I will attend the president’s ball, parade and football game.

Milton: How did you become a judge for the Rose Parade? Gallagher: It was a complete surprise. In February 2020, I was contacted by a representative of the committee. There is no application or recommendation process. When they reached out, I thought I was on one of those TV shows, like I was being “Punk’d.” I sent them my biography and they contacted me in March to let me know that I was going to be one of the three judges. There was no parade in 2021 because of COVID, so I will be one of the judges this year.
Janet Gallagher, associate professor of horticulture at Kishwaukee College, was selected as one of three float judges for the Rose Parade during the Pasadena Tournament of Roses on New Year’s Day. Milton: Have you ever attended the parade before? Gallagher: This will be my first time attending the parade. I have never worked on the floats before, but I always watch the parade. We’ve had a speaker that has worked on the parade come in to talk to
Milton: What is some of your background in the floral industry? Gallagher: I have been involved with floral design for 34 years and have been a horticultural instructor at Kishwaukee College for 16 years. I am also the founder and CEO of Designs by Janet, a special events floral company. ... This year’s parade theme focuses on education. The theme is “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” I think it’s really fitting for me to be a judge as an educator. Milton: What are you looking forward to the most? Gallagher: I’m excited to see the scale and size of the parade floats and the variety and quantity of flowers. I look forward to seeing all of the creativity. Every float will be different, and I can’t wait to see how each team interprets the parade’s theme. I’m also really excited to represent Kishwaukee College and Malta. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Tyler staff have been overjoyed by the community and family support and kindness that has been shown this month. “The generosity that has been shown by the DeKalb and Tyler community has been overwhelming,” Principal Robyn Timmerman said in the news release. Timmerman said she’s proud of all that her students and staff have accomplished this school year despite all the continuing obstacles and barriers. “The Tyler staff are an amazing group of educators that always go above and beyond to ensure student success and deserve this great recognition,” she said in the release. January – Fundraising begins for DeKalb’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Clock
The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Clock celebrated the 100th anniversary of its dedication this year. The clock is located in Memorial Park at the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb. Since last winter, the DeKalb Rotary Club and the American Legion Post 66 fundraised to restore the clock. The Rotary Club, Legion post and clock each celebrated 100 years of existence in 2021. On Nov. 11, a rededication ceremony was held for the clock in conjunction with a full military ceremony for Veterans Day. Although the clock was structurally sound, its mechanisms were not working. It needed mechanical repairs and historic restoration, including solving leakage problems, removing rust and placing stainless steel bolts. The cost of fixing the clock’s interior mechanisms was about $7,000, and painting and restoring the exterior of the clock cost between $15,000 and $16,000. The clock was restored by R.W. Keys and Son.

The exhibit was co-sponsored by the museum, NIU’s Center for Black Studies and Friends of the NIU Libraries.
March – Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra returns to stage
After more than a year since its last performance, the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra returned to the stage for a spring concert. The performance was recorded on NIU’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall stage and was made available for virtual viewing. In accordance with health guidelines during the pandemic, musicians performed socially distanced while on stage. They also wore face masks with mouth slits to play their instruments and used bell covers that filter the air that comes from their instrument without distorting or muffling the sound. The concert was recorded in three separate sections with industrial fans filtering and

The 75th season marks the anniversary of the group’s first production, “Pure as the Driven Snow,” which opened March 27, 1947. Stage Coach is the longest continuous-running community theater group in Illinois. This year’s shows included “When I Grow Up: A Musical Cabaret” in July, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woof” in August, “The Red Velvet Cake War” in September, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: A Musical Thriller” in October and “Elf: the Musical” in December.
June – Two new murals created in DeKalb
The City of DeKalb has two new murals, and the Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission hopes they are catalysts to new public works of art. On June 18, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of DeKalb’s colorful Unity mural. The mural, nicknamed “Project Underpass,” is located in the pedestrian underpass below Lincoln Highway that connects NIU and Prairie Park in DeKalb. The mural was painted by four local artists – Aaron Robertson, Shannon Gallagher, Jordan Jacob and Ivy Vargas – over four months. On June 22, the city’s Public Works department held a community mural painting event to paint the

July – St. John marks paying off its mortgage Seventeen years after a fire destroyed the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John in Sycamore, the congregation gathered July 25 to celebrate paying off the debt of its new church with a mortgage-burning ceremony. A large fire ignited in the church on Main Street
shortly after 5 p.m. Feb. 9, 2004. The fire caused about $4 million worth of damage, and the building had to be demolished. When firefighters attempted to open doors to ventilate the building, the fresh oxygen created a backdraft, which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms called the largest recorded backdraft in the United States. Ground was broken for the new church at 26555 Brickville Road in Sycamore in August 2005. The new church, which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous one, opened its doors and celebrated its first service on Feb. 11, 2007. A formal dedication service, open house and facility tours were held April 29, 2007. In December 2020, the congregation paid off its $1.25 million mortgage that was taken out to build the church. The congregation has held numerous fundraising events, as well as a debt reduction drive, over the years.
August – Fargo Skateboarding kickflips into new downtown DeKalb location
To increase awareness about the skate shop’s new location, which opened April 1, its new venue space and the indoor skatepark, Fargo Skateboarding held multiple events during Corn Fest weekend, Aug. 27-29. An open house with free skating and a fundraiser art sale and the “Lost & Found” Art Show, organized by Erin Boyle and Emily Grobe, took place at Fargo’s new location, 621 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. Fargo owner Ariel Ries said the events were the “first real big premiere of the new space.” She described the new skate shop and venue space,

September – Pay-It Forward House sold, but mission remains
Although the Pay-It-Forward House’s physical building, furniture and décor were sold, the nonprofit organization will continue its mission. The agency provides a home-awayfrom-home to the family members and friends of patients receiving medical treatment in DeKalb County. The PayIt-Forward House, 719 Somonauk St. in Sycamore, provided more than 21,660 nights of rest for guests since opening in 2005. Changes in hospital room privacy and insurance rules suppressed the demand for rooms at the house. The board decided that an operational pivot was in order, transitioning from providing nights of rest in the cozy house on Somonauk Street to providing patients’ family and friends with vouchers for hotel rooms at participating hotels.

LOOKING BACK
9 the past week. On Tuesday night last week, thieves came into the yard and unscrewed several bulbs from light strings on evergreens. Then again on Wednesday night more were taken. She put a spotlight on the yard and attached a note to the remaining lights asking ”What’s the idea of stealing my lights?” Last night, between 9 and 10 p.m. thieves came by again and this time took all the strings and bulbs remaining except for the one set closest to the front porch. The spotlight was disconnected and the note gone.
Our very good friend Charlie Faltz, of the Somonauk Reveille, seems to be working himself up quite needlessly about an article in The Chronicle of last week concerning the matter of the route for the state trunk line south from this city. The Chronicle told of the proposed plan to go straight south, passing up the cement road already constructed into Waterman and crossing the Burlington a mile east of Waterman. If it is wiser to build the road straight south from this city, by all means do so, but it is likely that Waterman will make a vigorous protest, which is what The Chronicle said in its article. Parents are warned today to admonish their children about hooking their sleds on automobiles in various parts of the town. It is reported that this is a common practice now, and when they let go of the rope and coast, they have endangered their own lives on several occasions. The Illinois commerce commission today entered the following orders: Granting a certificate of convenience and necessity to the DeKalb County Telephone Company to extend its rural telephone line north to Colvin Park and to furnish a telephone service along its line. Another locomotive of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad was transferred from the St. Paul roundhouse yesterday morning to the Chicago, Milwaukee & Gary line. Two other engines were taken over last week. The transfer is an anticipation of the acquisition of the Gary road the first of the year by the C. M. & St. P. Company. The Gary line is badly in need of additional locomotives. Mailmen of DeKalb had one of the busiest times in the history of the post office during the last week or 10 days. They state unanimously they carried the greatest amount of mail they have ever carried. The regulars had the subcarriers, and some of the old-timers did not have a chance to get on the other side of the street during the last week. Cards, letters and parcels were more numerous than ever before, according to reports and every mailman had at least one assistant. The parcel post wagon had a helper and the two were compelled to keep going hard and fast all day.

Some of the city’s most beautiful trees on West Lincoln Highway have been topped the last day or two, and now present a very unsightly appearance. The work is being done by the telephone construction gang, and as one man said this morning, it was the first time he knew of a telephone gang knowing how to trim trees. The row of shade trees on West Lincoln Highway adjoining Mrs. Mayo’s property, have been cut from the top to make room for some new telephone wires and the trees look as if a cyclone had struck them.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, the parking meters in DeKalb will be placed in use and enforcement of the parking meter ordinance will be ordered. Although the meters have been ready for the past couple of weeks, city officials decided that enforcement would not start until Jan. 2. Word was received in DeKalb today by Sen. Dennis J. Collins from Walter A. Rosenfield, director of public works and buildings, that the proposed widening of the main streets of the village of Shabbona has received official sanction. The widening of the main thoroughfare in the village will be increased approximately 22 feet in the near future. Through the efforts of Sen. Collins, who has been instrumental in pushing the project, the net results were made public today.
Work has been started on the new cafeteria at the Northern Illinois State Teachers College, excavation activities having been started about a week ago. The cafeteria building is being sent here from Camp McCoy, Wis. The contract for the construction of the cafeteria has been let to the W. E. O’Neil Company of Chicago, the construction company also having erected part of the barracks at the college. Three loads of building material have already arrived in this city. All but three of the 18 barracks units at the college have been accepted by the school and the others will be accepted as soon as sinks arrive. Six veterans and families have moved into their new homes in the Parkview subdivision in Sycamore. Although the homes are not complete, the veterans have moved into them anyway. One vital factor is finished now and that is the water and sewer systems. Some homes still do not have the gas mains in and those families are unable to heat water and cook, but they have moved into the homes regardless of this. There is still much work to be done on the houses before they can be called completed.

One DeKalb woman seems to be more unlucky than other residents who have lost their holiday yard lighting. Mrs. Erwin Koehler of College Avenue has been the victim of thefts three times in
Rural DeKalb County was free of injury accidents over the holiday weekend, but the city of DeKalb had two injured Saturday night. A minor accident on Sycamore Road in front of DeVal Shopping Center Friday afternoon involved three cars and resulted in some facial cuts on one girl who was given first aid at the scene by DeKalb police.
1996 – 25 YEARS AGO
The biggest toy craze to hit the nation this Christmas may have helped fuel lofty receipt totals at many toy stores, but even beyond “Elmo fever,” holiday sales in general were not a disappointment. And, for many local retailers, sales were even greater than anticipated. The “Tickle Me Elmo” doll, which retails for just under $27 at most stores, appeared to cause as much commotion this year as the Cabbage Patch doll of the ’80s. Although eager patrons must wait a few more weeks before utilizing Sycamore Public Library’s new expansion facility, the added convenience offered should be worth the wait. In fact, since the original sandstone structure was built in 1905, except for remodeling the basement some 25 years ago, both staff and patrons alike have had to make do with only about 6,500 square feet of space. Over time, even that space has continued to get smaller. The Kirkland Village Board unanimously approved covering some of the costs involved in a potential buyout of the trailer park devastated during last summer’s floods. Kirkland officials say the move is another step in continuing the process of buying out the trailer park to prevent future flood damage, a process known as mitigation.

DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department announced it will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic next week. According to a news release from the health department, the clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. All COVID-19 vaccines – including Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson – will be available at this clinic, according to county health officials. Immunization types that will be offered include the initial series of the vaccine, boosters and pediatric for patients ages 5-11. To sign up for an appointment online, visit https://app.acuityscheduling.com/ schedule.php?owner=21571681&appointmentType=29136323. Other measures people can take include avoiding crowded and poorly ventilated spaces, wearing a mask in public indoor settings, delaying travel until you’re fully vaccinated and staying home if you are sick or show symptoms of COVID-19. To ask DeKalb County health officials additional vaccine-related questions, email covid19@dekalbcounty.org. For information about COVID-19 in DeKalb, visit https://health.dekalbcounty.org/.
KC offers new certificate in Organizational Leadership
MALTA – Kishwaukee College has created a new Organizational Leadership certificate, which will be available to students in the spring semester. The certificate is designed for stu-
dents seeking entry-level leadership positions within an organization while building necessary communication and business skills. Additionally, those currently employed and looking to advance in their careers can benefit from this certificate. Organizational leadership offers a wide range of career possibilities in today’s global marketplace. Students will prepare for positions in general management, business information management, human resources management, operations management and administrative support. “This certificate is a great way to gain or expand leadership skills. The courses focus on real-world situations to help students understand and practice leadership,” Tammy Tiggelaar, associate professor of Business and Marketing Management at Kishwaukee College, said in a news release. “Leadership is essential at all levels of an organization. No matter the industry, skills like problem-solving and decision-making are key.” The program takes one year to complete and builds upon classes needed for Kish’s Supervision Basics Certificate. Students who wish to continue their education can use the Organizational Leadership certificate as a pathway to earn their Associate in Applied Science in Marketing Management or higher degrees. Classes offered in the spring semester include Human Relations, Introduction to Management and Leadership Development. These classes are being offered online, with regular class meetings happening via Zoom to allow students to participate in virtual class discussions and activities from anywhere. The spring semester begins Tuesday, Jan. 18. For more information, visit kish. edu or contact Academic Advising at advising@kish.edu or One-Stop at onestop@kish.edu. – The MidWeek
