Ready to say ‘I do’? Consider a riverboat, a rustic barn or a zoo
By Melissa Rubalcaba Riske • Photos by Katelyn Turner Photography and provided by St. Charles Park District
Skip the chapel and instead say those wedding vows next to a herd of giraffes or while cruising down the Fox River on a Paddlewheel Riverboat. Couples are treating their guests to incredible experiences and making their special day unforgettable with remarkable experiences and locations right here in Illinois.
BEARS, GIRAFFES AND A VISIT WITH A SLOTH
Last year Brookfield Zoo hosted more than 1,000 events and that includes weddings too, explained Millie McDaniel, director of catering & event sales for Brookfield Zoo. Couples choose the zoo for its distinct location, the opportunity for incredible photographs and many sentimental reasons too, McDaniel said.
“We’ve had couples who met at the zoo, had their first date at the zoo or proposed at the zoo. They fell in love at the zoo and found their mate,” she said.
Couples have a range of choices with a zoo wedding, from the indoor venues like near the bear’s underwater viewing location to outdoor venues that include nature and animals. The
canopy of trees outside of the giraffe enclosure makes a beautiful spot and it’s likely a giraffe or two will lean in for a closer look, McDaniel said.
“Our giraffes are very curious,” she added.
Couples can select add-on extras like a private feeding with the giraffes or having an animal ambassador, like the resident sloth, visit with wedding guests. McDaniel said most couples arrive earlier in the day for their photos. The zoo offers a tram shuttle to move guests around the park. The zoo’s executive chef can prepare a meal to suit the couple’s theme, from plated meals of traditional banquet offerings to a buffet of choices to reflect a culture or cuisine of choice.
“Our chef can produce any food,” McDaniel said. “He recently catered a wedding with a combination of Indian and Mediterranean cuisine to reflect the couple’s heritages.”
Often weddings spill into the evening hours, giving the couple and their guests a chance to enjoy the grounds after the crowds have left for the day. McDaniel said couples have even requested to allow their guests to ride on the zoo’s carousel and this spring the zoo is adding a Ferris Wheel, too.

SET SAIL INTO THE SUNSET
Couples can book a private cruise aboard the St. Charles Park District’s Paddlewheel Riverboats, offering a smaller, more intimate setting for their special occasion. The two-level riverboat can accommodate celebrations, complete with dancing and cocktails too, explained Tera Harvey, manager of cruise operations for the St. Charles Park District.
“We’ve had weddings aboard the riverboats as well as rehearsal dinners. It’s a great, small, intimate space,” Harvey said.
The riverboat can accommodate up to 40 guests for a seated meal with a buffet food station and around 60 guests for an event with cocktails and appetizers. The riverboat is accessible by wheelchairs and has an enclosed lower level with wrap-around windows, which are a must to enjoy the views from the river. Harvey said when booking a private charter, she works with guests who want to time their cruise to catch the sunset from the river.
GET MARRIED IN A GARDEN
For years visitors have tiptoed through tulips, Hosta plants and trees to admire their beauty at the family-owned garden center Hornbaker Gardens located just outside Princeton. From a couple’s dream for a little land through the years evolved into a garden nursery and center.
The garden center was a destination for wedding photos and in 2015 The Barn, an onsite event location opened. Designed to look historic, the new construction incorporates the rustic feel with modern amenities like air conditioning, wheelchair accessibility and indoor bathrooms too, explained Lindsay Funderberg, manager of The Barn and event coordinator.
Couples can create a rustic to elegant feel for their event and the space is large enough to host up to 250 guests. Funderberg explained in addition to weddings and family celebrations The Barn can host prom for the local high schools.
“The views are just great at sunset so we work with availability and offer flexibility in cruise times,” Harvey said.
In addition to weddings aboard the riverboat she’s had couples book a charter for their guests to enjoy the day after a wedding, such as a brunch cruise or to add on to the wedding celebration when using other nearby venues in St. Charles, such as the Hotel Baker.
“This year we are hosting the prom for Bureau Valley High School and Princeton High School,” she said, adding how, for years, students have used the gardens for their prom photos, and it’s been wonderful to be able to welcome the schools for their celebration.
The riverboats cruise mid-May through October, Tuesdays through Sundays.
The gardens is by far the biggest draw to the garden center’s property, where the natural backdrop makes it ideal in all seasons, though Funderberg said autumn is especially a favorite. Couples pose next to the native prairie and brides slip out of their shoes to walk down the ravine of Hostas for photos. The gardens also make an ideal way for guests to enjoy the cocktail hour.

ADVENTURE Anniversary
CELEBRATE ROMANTIC MILESTONES BY BOOKING A VACATION
By Patricia MacMillan
Years of life and love deserve to be celebrated, and for many couples, the perfect way to mark a special anniversary is with a big trip filled with unforgettable moments.
Plainfield-based travel agent Lori Hoffman looks to take the guesswork and complication out of planning such a meaningful occasion with her business, Travel by Lori. Utilizing her decades of experience in the industry, Hoffman helps customers as they seek out the perfect destination. Then there’s the often-complex job of coordinating logistics, be it transportation, accommodations or excursions.
“I have many clients who book
vacations for a big anniversary,” Hoffman said. “Some are celebrating one, some 25, some 50 years of marriage.”
As for the popular destinations, clients’ mileage may vary.
“There is no one-size-fits-all option for a celebration such as this,” she added, though some locations prove more sought-after than others.
Romance embedded into its very foundation; Italy often tops the list.
For those seeking an exotic, beachfront locale, Hoffman recommends the Maldives in Asia. Bungalows perched just above serene turquoise waters are especially enticing, she added.
Another destination making its mark on the travel industry is Cappadocia in central Turkey, according to TSheeka Ruffin of Pleasant Point Travel in Bolingbrook.
Its unearthly topography features what’s known as fairy chimneys. These cone-like formations are composed of porous rock and can tower more than 100 feet in the air. The view is even more spectacular when seen from brightly colored hot air balloons, one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Sometimes clients are not only looking to celebrate their commitment to one another, but to reaffirm it.
“I just had a couple renew their vows in Costa Rica,” said Hoffman, adding that it’s often a popular destination

ADVENTURE
for those interested in adventure, be it ziplining through dense jungle canopy, whitewater rafting or visiting Arenal Volcano National Park.
Another popular spot for adventure seekers is Patagonia at the very tip of South America, said Ruffin. Visitors can embark on treks that take them to stunning glacial lakes as well as witness an abundance of wildlife, including more than 180 species of seabirds.
Couples who have spent a lifetime in each other’s company also have a bevy of options to explore.
Ruffin ticks off a few.
“River cruises, safaris and wine country and culinary tours.”
A cruise on the Rhine River can take
passengers through a number of countries, including Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands. As the ship travels winding waterways, passengers can look out at beautiful landscapes and quaint historic villages to say nothing of the enchanting storybook castles like Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany. Different seasons afford couples different experiences, whether it’s spring’s multi-hued tulips in Holland or the splendor of trees dressed in oranges, yellows and reds during a fall cruise.
Then there are those who like to keep traveling domestic and extend the fun to all.
“Mature couples typically like Alaskan cruises,” Hoffman said. “The trend is they bring the whole family; many are multigenerational.”

Hotel Baker in St. Charles is a perfect place for romance
By Jamie Baker • Photos by Shane Lawrence Photography, Matt Warren Photography and Rachel Watson Photography
Hotel Baker’s rich history is as interesting and tenacious as its creator. Romantic and timeless, the hotel’s atmosphere is a perfect complement to any love story.
“It was built in 1928 by Colonel Edward Baker,” says Rowena Salas, co-owner of Hotel Baker. He frequently stated: “Hotel Baker is my pride and joy.”
Colonel Baker and Delora Norris were the heirs of John Gates and they both acquired 20 million apiece which Baker utilized to build in St. Charles. One of those projects was Hotel Baker. Back then, the hotel featured 53 guest rooms, the Rainbow Room and the Trophy Room, now known as the Waterfront Room.
“The Rainbow Room seats up to 200 guests,” says Salas. “It has a glass lit floor with 2,700 light bulbs underneath. It is a two-level ballroom hosting weddings, fundraisers, galas, dinners for corporate groups and other social events. The outdoor
connection is the Rose Garden with the boathouse, and we do many wedding ceremonies outdoors followed by the cocktail hour in the garden.”
The Waterfront Room has intimate accommodations for up to 100 guests. Its outdoor connection is the Waterfront Patio with the quaint gazebo, a setting for beautiful photo opportunities with the scenic Fox River in the background.
Nestled near the delicious La ZaZa Trattoria, Hotel Baker recently decided to make it easier for their guests who enjoy dining at the restaurant while staying at the hotel. “A lot of our clients go to ZaZa’s right across the street. We have been around St. Charles with ZaZa’s as our neighbor for 21 years,” says Salas. “The guests would bring their leftovers back to the hotel and often ask if we had a way they could store them. Now, we have refrigerators in all the guest rooms.”
Alongside the brand new refrigerators, Hotel Baker updated several other features in their guest rooms. “We are proud of our newly updated guest rooms designed by BB Interiors from Geneva, Illinois,” says Salas. “We have new furniture, beds, lamps, drapery, and new art pieces are being installed.” The guest rooms are brighter, intimate and comfortable for a tranquil, peaceful getaway.
“We want everyone to come and visit Hotel Baker, enjoy the lounge and have a pleasant night stay,” says Salas. “We have created a warm and inviting atmosphere for our guests. There is a lot of passion and commitment from the Salas Family and the Hotel Baker Team for the community of St. Charles, Illinois.”

The benefits to hosting a wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue
Streamlining the wedding planning process can help couples feel relaxed and enable them to more fully enjoy their big day. Hosting a wedding ceremony and reception at the same location is one way to streamline and simplify the planning process.
According to the wedding resource Here Comes the Guide, all-in-one venues are preferred by the majority of modern engaged couples. Couples contemplating such an approach can consider the following benefits to tying the knot and hosting the reception at the same venue.
• Streamlined planning: Rather than having to coordinate with two places, all of couples attention can be directed to one location and working with one party coordinator. This can reduce the propensity for mix-ups.
• Ease of transport: Figuring out how to move between multiple locations and schedule hired vehicles and the like can be a chore. With one venue, guests simply arrive and are done with travel until the festivities end.
• Seamless transition: Sometimes there can be an awkward period between the ceremony and the reception. In such situations, a ceremony may end but the cocktail hour is still an hour or two away. A ceremony and reception in one locale can eliminate the gap, as such venues typically begin the cocktail hour a short time after the ceremony has ended.
• Better guest attendance: Guests who may find it challenging to get to two different locations, particularly those who don’t drive or must rely on public transportation or a taxi, may find a single-location wedding more convenient.
• Outdoor ceremony: Couples who want to exchange vows outdoors often can do so when they have one wedding location because the nuptials are taking place outside of a house of worship, which may not allow for an outdoor wedding due to the sanctity of the location.
• Fewer travel worries: With a single location, it makes it much easier if inclement weather dampens the occasion because there is far less traveling involved.
Couples can keep in mind that a single-location wedding may come with some challenges. Unless the location is on the grounds of a house of worship, the wedding may lack the religious or spiritual component that some couples aspire to. Also, weather can cause issues if couples had hoped to have the ceremony outdoors and must move it into the same space as the reception as a plan B, necessitating a turnover of the room. Couples also may be limited in their photo backdrops, as there will not be two separate places where photos are taken, particularly if the wedding space is limited.
Hosting a ceremony and reception at a single location can benefit couples who want to simplify and streamline their wedding planning.

Where to view spring blooms in Starved Rock Country – and what to look for
By Stephanie Jaquins Photos by Lisa Sons, Joe Jakupcak and Shaw Media
When Lisa Sons spots skunk cabbage at the west entrance of Starved Rock State Park in late February or early March, she knows spring is near.
Skunk cabbage is one of more than 40 species of wildflowers that can be found at the park and in the Starved Rock Country region – and as a natural resource coordinator and park naturalist at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Sons knows all the good spots to see them.
“In the spring, here at the park, there are little nooks and crannies, so usually one of the first places I go to are Ottawa and Kaskaskia canyons,” said Sons, who works with Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks. “Illinois Canyon is usually known for its Virginia bluebells, and then usually some of the bluffs above French Canyon and out at St. Louis Canyon get shooting stars, wood betony, coral roots and some trilliums as well.”
In addition to exploring Starved Rock and Matthiessen for wildflowers, Sons recommends
checking out the IDNR website, www2.illinois.gov/ dnr, for nature preserves.
“Nature preserves are known for those native plants and those native species, so that’s usually some of the first places I go, especially for tall grass prairie plants in the summer,” Sons said.
Dayton Bluffs Preserve in Ottawa can be wet in the spring, Sons said, but the site does have bloodroots and yellow trout lilies, among other plants. The north leg of the trail along the Fox River annually sprouts a large bluebell carpet in late April or early May.
When seeking wildflowers, Sons says it’s best to hike trails with less foot traffic. She noted the best time to view them is when spring temperatures have steadied in the upper 50s, usually at the end of April into May.
Joe Jakupcak, a retired teacher who taught in Ottawa and Chicago, used to take his students to Starved Rock on a yearly field trip, and those visits grew his interest in wildflowers.
Jakupcak has been a guided hike leader at Starved Rock Lodge for 12 years. During wildflower season, he said you’ll see a different wildflower – most of them white – every couple days.
“They come up and bloom and seed within a week of each other because they don’t have much time,” Jakupcak said.
Due to the 80- to 90-foot height difference, Jakupcak noted hikers will see different flowers on the river and bluff trails.
The Starved Rock Visitor Center has flower identification cards for the common species found at the park. The center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

STEPS AGAINST HUNGER
Northern Illinois Food Bank hosting 11th Fight Hunger 5K and Fun Run
Baker
One of the biggest problems facing our country is hunger, and at Northern Illinois Food Bank, contributing to the solution is their dedication. Through fundraising and events, Northern Illinois Food gathers resources to combat hunger locally in Illinois. Their next campaign for funds is an opportunity to get some exercise and bring the whole family for a day of joy – the Fight Hunger 5K and Fun Run.
“The purpose is to fundraise for our mission of providing food to the 900 food pantries, soup kitchens, and feeding programs that are in our network and that we serve throughout the 13 counties in Northern Illinois,” says Special Events and Promotions Manager Tiffany King. “We provide food to 560,000 people every single month: That’s 82 million meals a year. All of the funds raised through our fundraising efforts through the Fight Hunger event go toward that.”
This year will be the 11th 5K event for the nonprofit, set for Saturday, April 27 at the Oak Brook Reserve in Oak Brook, presented by Glanbia Performance Nutrition. “You can register as an individual,” says
King. “You can set up a team, you can share promo codes with organizations, school groups and companies” The Fun Run kicks off at 8:30 in the morning and is just over a mile in length, perfect for any age or fitness level.
The 5K will follow to start at 8:40. It is chip-timed and winds throughout the Oak Brook Reserve and Oak Brook Park District. “Both of the courses finish at the post-race festival which is filled with sponsor tents, a finish line beer, an interactive KidZone with a 55 foot gaming truck and a Touch a Truck,” says King. “There will be lively music, food trucks and giveaways from the sponsors. So, it’s just a fun family friendly event at the end where we just celebrate what we just accomplished on the course and how we helped the community.”
When it comes to fighting hunger, every penny counts. In fact, each dollar donated typically translates to eight dollars’ worth of groceries. “We actually have a very generous anonymous donor, who will be providing $50,000 to match every donated dollar for the Fight Hunger 5K event,” says King. “So actually, the impact will now be for every
one dollar donated or fundraised, we can help provide $16 worth of groceries for our neighbors.” Register or volunteer at www.solvehungertoday. org/fighthunger.

Rainy Day
REMAIN ACTIVE INDOORS DURING SPRING SHOWERS
By Kevin Druley • Photos by Shaw Media
OK, OK. So, mom – perhaps by way of Florence Henderson’s Carol Brady –said there was no playing ball in the house.
But we didn’t hear anything forbidding fun at the arcade, indoor amusement park, or bowling alley, did you?
For as much beauty as spring provides, there are enough rainy days that might make it tough, icky, or even unsafe to enjoy the outdoors. Good thing the Neighborhood Tourist coverage area offers ample options for letting the good times roll inside. Here’s a look.

The words “spring break” mean different things to different people, but perhaps the most exotic interpretation involves hopping in the water. Somewhere.
If driving or jetting to Florida or other points south isn’t feasible, all is not lost if you’re wanting to take time to splash around.
Road-tripping to an indoor water park offers the chance to get a change of scenery as well as get a jump on summer. Here’s a look at some possible destinations.
