Neighborhood Tourist is one of my favorite magazines to help produce, and this season’s edition is no different!

We’re focusing on adventure and exploring some of the most beloved attractions our region has to offer, with a little dose of where to wet your whistle.

Water parks are a classic pastime for when the days are long and hot, and we’ve got you covered! Check in at your local park districts to learn more about local pools and slides and, if you’re in the mood for something a little more, stop by Raging Waves in Yorkville (featured on our cover!) – learn more about different aquatic attractions in the Tourist region on page 24.

When nighttime rolls around and the temperatures come down, don’t miss the yearly opportunity to take in a concert or theatrical performance al fresco (page 44). If the need for travel strikes you, check in at Star Union Spirits

in Peru (page 34) or cruise down the “Mother Road” for more unique entertainment and dining opportunities (page 19).

I am so excited for you to dive into our summer edition of Neighborhood Tourist! As always, thank you for reading!

Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville is a regional favorite with plenty of attractions and activities for the whole family! Check out more local aquatic fun on page 24.

WRITERS

¢ PATTI MACMILLAN loves words — short and to-the-point, lyrical, even convoluted — she believes they all have their place in our wonderfully lavish lexicon. It’s the power and poignancy of words that drew her first to reading, and then to writing, which she has done as a journalist and public relations professional for more than a decade. When she’s not putting digital pen to page, she (mostly) enjoys time spent with her two young sons and husband though the woodland walks that allow her respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life she prefers sans company.

¢ VICKI MARTINKA PETERSEN loves playing tourist right here in the Chicago area. Vicki juggles being a mom with her full-time job as a digital copywriter for a regional hospital system and her side hustle as a freelance writer for local niche publications. When she’s not negotiating with her son to go to bed, Vicki can be

found meditating, practicing yoga, cooking and reading. She also volunteers at her son’s school and serves on the board of the AAUW Aurora Area Branch and Moms & More of Oswego.

¢ MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE loves sharing stories and taking time to spotlight the amazing things people are doing in the community. These stories are an inspiration and a reminder of all the good in our world. As a busy mom to three boys she loves being able to escape into the stories she writes and all of the wonderful people she meets along the way. Melissa and her husband enjoy exploring new places and trying new foods with their three young sons. From delicate sushi rolls to tacos in fresh tortillas there are so many new destinations throughout the state to explore.

¢ PAT SZPEKOWSKI is president of PR Strategies & Communications, inc. in Elgin, a full service advertising agency/public relations

firm she founded in 1987. Pat enjoys storytelling and capturing the essence of people, places, businesses and nonprofits. She enjoys wearing two hats as an award-winning accredited public relations professional and freelance journalist. Pat strongly believes in community outreach and is involved in active participation, support, membership, volunteerism and leadership.

¢ CHRIS WALKER loves stories. He’ll tell you how seeing Jane’s Addiction at The Riv in 1989 changed him, why Noah Baumbach’s “Kicking & Screaming” is his favorite film and why being a dad is one of the coolest things. He has plenty of great stories, but it’s writing and sharing yours that he loves doing most. When he’s not writing, you’ll find him parenting, watching or umpiring baseball, listening to music or reminiscing about his whiffle ball field.

Next to a small stretch of beach perfect for a bonfire lies a beer garden with ample seating, picturesque views and Lake County brews on tap. Watch sunlight glitter on the surface of Bangs Lake at this popular lakefront restaurant. Newly remodeled, the understated nautical interior showcases exposed wood beams and elegant seating. Outdoor dining options include a sizable deck as well as tables that sit right on the sand and lead out to the adjacent marina, which offers a boat launch as well as storage of kayaks and paddle boards. Fish entrees like peel-and-eat shrimp mingle with bowls and salads as well as tacos that pair perfectly with a house-made coconut mojito.

Diners can enjoy specials on savory bites and drinks during Happy Hour, which takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. at the indoor bar and lounge every weekday except Tuesdays.

n CHAIN O’ LAKES BOAT TOURS

25635 W. Hermann Ave., Antioch 847-521-0668 www.chainolakesboattours.com

Those seeking a more immersive lake experience can opt to explore the bountiful and expansive waterway that is the Chain O’Lakes by way of a guided boat tour. Company owner and captain Dan Shaughnessy grew up in the area and shares with passengers his lifetime’s worth of knowledge about

the 15 interconnected lakes, including details about its flora — August brings striking Egyptian lotus flowers to the water’s surface — and fauna like the 230 species of birds, among them eagles, herons and even pelicans, that frequent the lakes. An assortment of tours include guided fishing trips, sunset cruises and more. While weekends tend to bring revelers to the water, Shaugnessy says tours that take place during the week are far more serene and allow visitors a chance to fully appreciate the beauty of the lakes.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, it is the only remaining beach ridge shoreline that remains in the state, and is home to various types of natural areas including wetlands, prairie and oak savannas. Visitors looking to stay for a while can opt to camp on the grounds — online reservations are recommended — or stay at the Illinois Beach Hotel, which offers rooms with views of the lake shore, a shop and restaurant.

Practically a stone’s throw from the city’s eponymous lake stands The Dole, a Victorian-era manor that dates back to 1865. Once the property of the well-heeled Dole family, the mansion is now the site of many community events including a large-scale outdoor farmers market held Sundays through October. Shoppers can peruse vendors, grab a bite to eat and even enjoy live music and cocktails. Select evenings feature performances in Lou’s Lounge, an intimate speakeasy-style space. The Dole is also home to the Lakeside Festival, which brings games, rides and entertainment to the palatial home’s grounds, July 4 through July 7.

n BLARNEY ISLAND

27843 W. Grass Lake Road, Antioch 847-395-3804 www.blarneyisland.com

Those interested in letting loose a little should consider Blarney Island in Grass Lake. This Caribbean-themed bar and eatery, which dubs itself “Key West of the Midwest,” has been around in one form or another since 1901. The objective at Blarney Island is fun, and patrons take it seriously. It’s a favorite among boat owners, but those without their own need not look elsewhere. Shuttle boats regularly depart from the establishment’s Antioch-based parking lot. On the menu is an extensive lineup of bar food classics including burgers and wraps while the island vibe can be found in offerings like coconut shrimp. As for entertainment, not only does Blarney Island host live music on its outdoor stage all summer long but Thursdays are earmarked for daring drag boat racing out on the lake.

Cruising on Route 66

Photos courtesy of Visit Springfield and Heritage Corridor Destinations

t’s said the joy is in the journey, not just the destination, though for Casey Claypool, there are some really fun destinations. Claypool is the executive director of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, an organization dedicated to promoting Route 66 businesses and sites in Illinois.

Claypool has logged hundreds of visits along the 421 miles of Route 66 in Illinois, meeting with small businesses, community and chamber leaders and soaking up the history of the “Mother Road.”

“If you do it right, it takes seven days to see the Route 66 sites in Illinois,” Claypool said, adding most will spend two or three days but she recommends the week to take in the full experience, from roadside murals, historic locations and iconic foods.

Most know Claypool through the website IllinoisRoute66.org as well as the visitors guide and now a mobile app that helps travelers plan their stops along Route 66. For Claypool, it’s fun to have people share their social media posts, adding how the website and app helped them find map their route to destinations along Route 66.

The organization serves as a network for businesses and communities along Route 66. Claypool strives to keep her resources up to date, including listing special events like car shows and festivals or featuring small businesses like an antique shop, a tire and service center and campgrounds.

“Our sole purpose is to market and advance the economic development of Route 66,” Claypool said. “Our job is to provide as much information [as possible] to the travelers.”

Route 66 was built in 1926 and, over time, there were multiple alignments. The official starting point is across the street from the Art Institute in downtown Chicago, where visitors pose next to the sign announcing the start of Route 66. The roadway traverses 92 communities in Illinois, from larger cities like Chicago and Joliet to smaller rural communities.

With the rise of social media and posting selfies, there’s been a renewed interest in Route 66 and capturing one’s phone in historic locations or next to noteworthy murals.

The new Route 66 Experience located on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield presents a perfect stop to learn the history and capture selfie photos next to neon signs and more. The permanent exhibit is open year-round and has become a must-see on the roadway’s adventures.

The exhibit is also adding to the Route 66 experiences in and around Springfield, added Scott Dahl, director of Visit Springfield, the city’s tourism agency and website of the same name. Every day Dahl and his staff help direct visitors around Springfield to taken in the state’s history, learn more about President Abraham Lincoln and navigate the many sites located along the area’s stretch of Route 66.

One of the top spots is Shea’s Garage, which reopened this spring to visitors. Dahl said after visiting the property and snapping up some photos, be sure to head down to Motorheads Bar, Grill & Museum, to see an exhibit with artifacts from the garage including Bill Shea’s mechanic uniform.

Springfield is also home to some iconic foods of the route including the Maid Rite Sandwich Shop, which opened in 1924 and touts itself as the first drive-thru restaurant. Another favorite stop for Route 66 visitors is the Cozy Dog Drive In, a family-run restaurant that in 1949 introduced visitors to the hot dog on a stick, better known today as a corndog. Dahl said in full disclosure, the restaurant is not in the original building and it has moved over from its original location on the road, the look and feel of the building retains a historic feel.

“It’s like stepping back in time in Cozy Dog, you feel like you’ve been transported to another era. You walk inside and it hasn’t changed much,” Dahl said.

And if one is talking iconic, there must be a mention of the horseshoe, an open-face sandwich of Texas Toast topped with piles of meat, crispy French fries and a cheese sauce. Dahl said Springfield restaurant adds their own spin on the dish and Visit Springfield has a Horseshoe Trail to offer visitors destinations

Selfie stops

While touring Route 66 through Illinois, look for the giant 3D sculptures where you can stop for a photo opportunity! Communities with the 3D signs include Burr Ridge, Bolingbrook, Lockport, Romeoville, Crest Hill, Joliet, Dwight, Gardner and Pontiac.

serving up the hometown favorite.

Visitors this summer may see the beginning of the work to spruce Route 66 for its centennial celebration in 2026, and this includes adding more murals created from professional artists.

Before diving into the centennial, Dahl said the Springfield community is excited for the opening of the Scheels Sports Park, featuring eight turf fields for soccer, lacrosse and baseball and a 190,000-square-foot indoor sports dome. The sports park is slated to open in 2025 and will draw visitors to the area for youth sports events. With the expected influx of visitors to the area for sporting events, such as tournaments, Dahl said community leaders hope visitors will make time to check out the area’s sites, businesses and restaurants while utilizing tools like VisitSpringfield.com and Illinoisroute66.org to map out excursions between sporting events.

“The historic sites are very walkable,” Dahl said. “We’re very excited that the park is going to bring people to the entire city.”

With the goal of helping visitors enjoy their time in Springfield, Dahl said his best advice is to plan for more than a day.

“Plan more time,” Dahl said. “On Route 66 there’s a lot to experience, a lot of ‘Instagramable’ moments.”

STAR UNION

SPIRITS

Award-winning Peru distillery honors local history while creating and serving hand-crafted artisan spirits

Pat Szpekowski • Photos provided by Star Union Spirits and by Ryan Searl

Sometimes history has an uncanny way of delightfully coming full circle. That’s just the case with the popular Star Union Spirits in Peru, Illinois.

Providing a wide range of custom hand-crafted artisan spirits, Star Union Spirits was founded in 2016 by colleagues Jeff Yosowitz and Bob Windy. The two friends originally shared a hobby and passion as winemakers in Windy’s garage for about 10 years while each pursued their successful individual careers.

“At first, the wine wasn’t very palatable,” Yosowitz said. “Jump forward 10 years and someone approaches me with an offer of $40 to purchase my bottle of wine.”

Yosowitz said, “I can’t sell it to you,” but it got him

and Bob thinking. “Let’s turn the hobby into a business!”

“I was an attorney in the Chicago’s Loop for over 25 years,” said Yosowitz, who originally hails from Ohio, “and Bob has a strong background in graphic design. Our hobby wine-making journeys in Bob’s garage brought us both back to Bob’s roots in Peru.”

Their journey to starting their own distillery business began in 2016 in a discussion with the mayor of Peru, who also serves as the liquor commissioner. The mayor looked at them and said, he saw a bar, a tavern and a retail liquor license, but no craft distilling license. Yosowitz had worked in a municipality in law school and said he would get a draft craft distilling ordinance back to the mayor the next day. Two months later the ordinance passed the Peru City Council and, after obtaining additional

federal, state and county licenses, Star Union Spirits was on its way.

A little after Star Union Spirits opened its doors to the public on Nov. 23, 2018, they became aware of the closing of Tailwinds Distilling Company in Plainfield.

“In February 2019, we made a trip there to see our craft distilling friend Toby Beall, and were able to negotiate the purchase of some of their aging rum and agave barrels due to their closing and move forward with our own vision,” Yosowitz said.

In addition, they were able to gain a valuable, experienced and award-winning distiller, Casey Beall (Toby’s brother), who transitioned to Star Union Spirits in March 2019. So that meant, in addition to brandy, they had rum and agave. And being in “corn country,” it was a natural fit for them to later add whiskeys to the mix. Today, they now have a wide

portfolio of brandies, whiskies, rums, agaves, gins and vodka, as well as some small batch fun stuff like “Grappricot” (apricot infused grappa at 100 proof).

“The La Salle County Starved Rock area in Ottawa and Peru welcomes 2 million visitors a year,” Yosowitz said. “With Tangled Roots Brewing Company offering craft beers and August Hill Winery providing a variety of wines made from grapes grown in Illinois, it was just natural for us to complete the ‘alcohol trifecta’ and bring our business of custom-crafted spirits here.”

Even the name Star Union Spirits is steeped in history. It honors Peru’s first licensed alcohol producer, Star Union Products Company, which operated over 121 years making Star Model beer and closed in 1966.

Yosowitz’s and Windy’s love as winemakers and attention to detail has indeed rewarded them with their current status of making customcrafted, artisan, award-winning spirits recognized nationwide.

In 2021, Yosowitz proudly noted that at the American Craft Spirits Association annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, Star Union Spirits was named as creating the best rum in the competition.

“There were numerous competitors and entries from craft spirit manufacturers from all over the United States, and we were astounded and happy to hear that we were identified as winning the Best of Class Award for our Navy Strength Rum,” he said. Star Union Spirits has received multiple gold, silver and bronze awards over the years since, too.

Star Union Spirits is located in one of the most iconic historic buildings in the area, along with other entrepreneurs who call the old factory building home. Built in 1917, the building was home to The United Clock Company of Peru and then the Western Clock Co. It became Westclox in the 1950s and employed thousands of area residents, including Bob Windy’s grandfather many years ago.

Their 6,000-square-foot location embodies and celebrates the building’s rich history, bringing it to new life. The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. With a nod to some of its historic features, guests will find a bartop made from wood from Westclox’s old bowling lanes and foot rails created from the building’s old window frames.

The easy vibes beckon visitors to take time to relax, taste and find a favorite drink from over 75 different specialty cocktails expertly created from a very large selection of Star Union Spirits’ own brandy, rum, whiskey, agave, gin and vodka.

“You won’t find any TVs here in our tasting room,” Yosowitz said. “We encourage casual conversations and good times without any distractions.”

One of the products in Star Union Spirits’ line of liquors is Alembic Absinthe, an artisan drink that is part of the distillery’s growing line of botanical spirits.

While food is not served at Star Union Spirits, Yosowitz highly recommends patrons support Thyme Craft Kitchen across the street. “It’s a very popular farm-to-table restaurant offering fresh food from local farms and markets,” he said.

Sustainability is an important component of Star Union Spirits, too.

“Whenever possible, we source our corn and grains locally,” Yosowitz said.

Curious about distilling and crafting spirits? The Star Union Spirits distillery offers tours for an educational experience in learning about the entire process of making delicious spirits. Check Star Union’s Facebook event page for up-to-date tour and tasting times and events at www.facebook.com/ starunionspirits.

The Tasting Room is open 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday,

If you can’t find time to personally visit Star Union Spirits but are eager to try their temptations, they are happy to share some good news.

“We now have an active buy button on our website that will permit consumers in 23 states to buy directly off our site for direct shipment to home,” Yosowitz said. “And we’re happy to say that we offer a flat $20 shipping fee, whether you buy one bottle or 12.”

There are many reasons to support Star Union Spirits. They have a friendly and experienced staff, offer delectable custom-handcrafted spirits and personally welcome you to the dynamic Starved Rock area for an exciting day or weekend.
