Foods that promote healthy hair and skin Millions of people across the globe deal with conditions that affect the skin and hair. Acne is a skin and hair ailment that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is the most common skin condition in the United States. But what if the foods people eat could affect the health of their hair and skin? There is evidence that they can. Foods that contain certain nutrients, phytochemicals and enzymes may help people develop healthier hair and skin. Blueberries: The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave blueberries its top ranking for antioxidant activity. The antioxidants in blueberries neutralize free radicals and protect people from premature aging, which can help the skin look younger and more vibrant. Eggs: Eggs are great sources of protein and biotin, which are two nutrients that may

If You Believe Oral Health Is Important to YOU… Wait Until You See How Important it is to YOUR Overall Health and Wellness

help promote hair growth. The health and wellness information site Healthline says biotin is essential for the production of a hair protein called keratin. Fatty fish: Fatty fish, such as salmon, are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Ciara Foy, a Toronto-based holistic nutritionist, says about 3 percent of

the hair shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re also found in cell membranes and in the natural oils that keep the scalp and other areas of the skin hydrated. Red bell peppers: These peppers contain more vitamin C than oranges. According to dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll with Compass Der-

matology, vitamin C is an antioxidant precursor to collagen production, so consuming more vitamin C through foods can neutralize free radicals that could damage skin. Spinach: Trade lettuce for spinach, which is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and much more. These nutrients can be the building blocks of healthy skin and hair. Oysters: Nutritionist and author Lisa Drayer says oysters are good sources of zinc, which aids in skin cell renewal and repair. Coconut: Coconut water is great for hydration and contains potassium, an electrolyte that moves nutrients into the cells. Coconut oil also can be used to boost hair health as a pre-wash conditioning treatment. The secret to beautiful skin and hair may be hiding in plain sight at your local supermarket. HW196965

Get heart-healthy with a DASH diet igh blood pressure affects more than a billion people around the world. The American Heart H Association says an estimated 103 million adults

in the United States, nearly half of all men and women in the country, have hypertension. Statistics Canada estimates that around 18 percent of Canadians aged 12 and older have high blood pressure. While medication and lifestyle changes can help reduce blood pressure, a modified diet also can work wonders. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet, often referred to as “DASH,” is an approach to eating that is designed to help treat or prevent hypertension, according to the Mayo Clinic. The diet was developed in the 1990s by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. The DASH does not require special foods, but makes recommendations on choices that can alleviate high blood pressure. The diet recommends eating vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Fat-free or low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and vegetable oils are also included. Individuals adhering to the DASH diet should limit foods high in saturated fat, including fatty meats and tropical oils. Sugar-sweetened beverages and other sweets should be limited, too. When consuming foods, the idea is to stay within 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams of sodium. In addition to reducing blood pressure, the DASH diet can lead to weight loss and even reduce adherents’ cancer risk, advises the health resource Healthline. To help cut back on sodium, DASH guidelines advise using sodium-free spices to add flavor to foods. A person also can rinse canned foods to reduce salt or buy products that say sodium-free or low-sodium. Because no-salt foods can seem bland to those accustomed to salt, the Mayo Clinic suggests gradually cutting back on salted products until the taste buds can get used to less salty foods that fit within the DASH diet guidelines. Combining the DASH diet with exercise is a great way to reduce blood pressure even more naturally. Hypertension is a problem that can have lasting effects if not addressed. The DASH diet is one way to keep blood pressure levels in a healthy range. HW196970

The DASH diet is characterized by an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources.

Slow metabolism may indicate illness

Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions responsible for converting food into energy to run cellular processes. These reactions enable people to grow and sustain life effectively. Individuals who are following a dieting and exercise regimen may speak about having fast or slow metabolisms depending on how long they’ve been working toward a goal, and whether or not they have seen measurable results. Even though the speed at which the body metabolizes food is different for every person, sometimes a very sluggish metabolism could be a sign of illness. A diet that has stalled or even led to weight gain can be more than faulty genes. According to experts at the Washington Endocrine Clinic in Washington, D.C., certain underlying illnesses can result in weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Recognizing that a slow metabolism is part of certain conditions, and treating those conditions, can help people regain their energy and start losing weight. Extra cortisol: If the body has too much cortisol, which is known as “the stress hormone,” it may think it’s

under duress and needs extra calories for bodily energy. Normal amounts of cortisol can help burn fat if it is working synergistically with the rest of the chemicals in the body. When there’s too much, calories are hoarded. Cushing’s disease/syndrome: A similar phenomenon occurs with Cushing’s disease. This is an illness that occurs when there is too much cortisol in the body, according to The Pituitary Society. A tumor of the adrenal glands is sometimes to blame, while in other

cases the body just makes too much of the hormone ACTH, which causes cortisol levels to ramp up. Medications to control excessive production of cortisol can help. Hypothyroidism: With hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, offers the Mayo Clinic. This causes any number of bodily functions to slow down and result in weight gain, fatigue, joint pain, and other symptoms. Supplementation with a synthetic form of thyroid hormone may restore function and enable weight loss. Low testosterone: This is a condition in which the testes do not produce enough testosterone. It affects nearly 40 percent of men aged 45 and older, says the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms of low testosterone, such as increased body fat and fatigue, can derail weight loss efforts. Men can undergo testosterone replacement therapy to restore levels. If weight loss has stagnated and it is followed by other symptoms, individuals should make an appointment with their doctors to discover if illness is behind this difficulty. HW196984

Getting a better grasp on asthma causes and management People with asthma often fear the next attack. As a chronic inflammatory condition, asthma causes the airways to narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This makes breathing very difficult, and also can cause wheezing and coughing fits, advises the Mayo Clinic. Asthma is a common condition, affecting an estimated 26 million people, including six million children, in the United States alone. Despite that prevalence, the American Lung Association notes that the cause of asthma is unknown. Scientists continue to study asthma, focusing on various factors that may increase a person’s risk for the condition. Genetics: The ALA says genetics play a role, noting that the risk is higher among those with a parent or a sibling who has asthma. Allergies: Certain allergic conditions are linked to people with asthma. Seasonal allergies may compound asthma symptoms. Environment: Contact with allergens, irritants or even certain infections as an infant or in early childhood before the immune system matures is tied to asthma. Adult-onset asthma is often linked to exposure to chemicals or dust in the workplace.

Infections: Respiratory infections as a child that caused inflammation and damage to the lung tissue are implicated in compromising lung function later on in life. Once asthma is present, doctors often classify it as allergic or non-allergic, says the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Certain allergens, such as pet dander or mold, can trigger a reaction in allergic asthma. For the non-allergic variety, stress, exercise,

illness, extreme weather, and more may bring on an asthma attack. Even though asthma is a chronic condition with no known cure, it can be managed daily, says ACAAI. An asthma action plan can be developed with the help of a physician. Some treatment strategies include: • Identifying and avoiding asthma triggers as much as possible. • Getting vaccinated for influenza and pneumonia. • Recognizing that an at-

tack may be imminent and acting quickly using a prescribed asthma medication. • Reducing reliance on quick-relief inhalers by paying attention to frequency of use and discussing treatment adjustments. • Remaining calm during an attack and seeking further medical treatment if medications become ineffective. Chiropractors can help with various ailments Anyone who has experienced pain understands that it can be debilitating. Pain can make it challenging to manage everyday tasks and can affect relationships and physical and mental health in many ways. Pain medications were once the norm, but with the rise of the opioid epidemic, it may be wise to take a different approach to pain treatment. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the United States Department of Health and Human Services reveal that as many as one in five people received prescription opioids long-term for noncancer pain in primary care settings in 2016. While opioid use for pain does not always lead to abuse of these medications, opioid addiction has become a widespread problem across North America. These same agencies report that approximately 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments in the United States each day for misuse of prescription opioids. Between 2016 and 2017, opioid poisoning hospitalization rates went up by 8 percent in Canada, resulting in an average of 17 hospitalizations each day. Chiropractic care may be one avenue to pursue as a viable alternative to pain medications. While chiropractic manip-

ulations are most often associated with back and neck pain, there are many different benefits — some of which may surprise those unfamiliar with chiropractic care — for this type of care. Migraines and headaches: Research shows that spinal manipulation can be an effective way to treat migraines, tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck. In clinical trials conducted at Macquarie University, 72 percent of migraine sufferers had noticeable or substantial improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment. Accident injuries: Chiropractors can assess musculoskeletal anomalies caused by motor vehicle accidents as well as slips and falls. Whiplash is a common issue in car crashes, and this may be ad-

dressed by a chiropractor. Anxiety and stress: The fight or flight mechanism that is activated when a person experiences stress and anxiety can take its toll on various parts of the body. Because stress involves nerve impulses, chiropractors may be able to work primarily with the spine where these impulses originate to help release tension and nerve irritation. In addition, adjustments can improve blood circulation, which may help signal the brain to turn off its “rally to action” response to stressful situations. Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. It can be combined with temporomandibular joint syndrome, or TMJ, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, among other illnesses. Chiropractors can remove subluxations, which are misalignments of the vertebrae in the spine and joints that lead to pain responses. A Florida State University study found that those with fibromyalgia who combined resistance training with chiropractic treatment two times a week saw improvements in their symptoms. Chiropractic care may be an asset for pain management, as well as a way to improve overall health. TF19A354
