Strouss Park’s basketball court recently received a major makeover when the Mendota Optimist Club and Mendota Lion’s Club each donated $15,000 to upgrade the surface to a low maintenance modular sports tile. Several volunteers from both organizations installed the tile and painted the curbing surrounding the courts. Since installing, use has increased and feedback has been very positive. The city plans to install LED lighting in the spring of 2020 to enable evening use.

Mendota Chamber combines business promotion with community events The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce continues to reach out to businesses and residents throughout the area with a number of innovative programs combined with their traditional sponsorship of the annual Sweet Corn Festival. The Chamber’s Shop Local program was greeted favorably by the Mendota community and will be repeated again in 2019. For every $10 spent at each participating business, shoppers receive a sticker. Shoppers fill their card with stickers and turn them into the Chamber. The cards are entered into a grand prize drawing of gift certificates and prizes from businesses. In 2018, 725 cards were turned in which totaled $181,250 spent in Mendota from Nov. 16 through Dec. 31. The Chamber Annual Dinner in November will

Nightengales Thrift Shop/THM Clinic Nightengales Thrift Shop, a Non Profit 501-C and the Trinity Health Care Of Mendota Clinic (THM) are located at 708 Jefferson St. in Mendota. ADM investing in Mendota with new flour mill

North America’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in one project — now resides in Mendota. The new Archer Daniels Midland Flour Mill can produce over 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts to be exact) and employ 30-40 people. “We’re proud to be here, to work here, to live here and to give back here,” said Kevin Like, president of North American Flour Milling at ADM Co. The facility, for which construction began in June 2017, can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties plus two types of whole wheat. Production started around Aug. 1. Why did ADM choose

Mendota for the mill? ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, already had an

existing ADM grain transfer facility in Mendota with a rail loop initially constructed by Fasco Mills before ADM bought the

local company in 2007. ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area, and the company needed a new location to better serve its customers, Like said. “This is a big flour-consuming area, so it was natural to choose to hold on to our existing grain terminal, utilizing some of the same assets, utilizing supplier relationships, utilizing the 110-car rail unloading capability of this facility as well as the storage,” Like said. Also labor was part of the decision: “We’ve been working with this group of people for over 10 years now. We know the work ethic in this area.”
