Hello everyone and congratulations to our 4-H award winners! University of Illinois Extension is pleased to share the summer 4-H Fair project results for the outstanding youth participants in Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam Counties. In a typical year, these 4-H members would demonstrate their knowledge learned in their project areas at our traditional summer 4-H fair exhibitions. The best exhibits would then advance to state competition held annually during the Illinois State Fair. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, county 4-H exhibitions have transitioned to a virtual exhibition rather than an in-person show. University of Illinois Extension is committed to the health and safety of our youth, families, staff, volunteers and community members, so our inperson judging could not take place, however, project learning never stopped and Illinois 4-H responded quickly and in new ways to reach and serve our youth in new, virtual settings. 4-H is the largest out-of-school youth organization, challenging youth to “learn by doing” with fun, hands-on activities that teach skills for living. 4-H members range in age from 8 to 18. Youth who are 5 to 7 years of age may join 4-H as a Cloverbud member. 4-H is open to everyone. Children and teens can participate in a variety of ways including 4-H community clubs, special interest clubs, summer camps, inschool and after-school programs, workshops, community service projects and more. Although many youth participate in the 4-H fairs, many others participate in 4-H programming outside of the fair events, including local, regional, state, national and international 4-H events. The 4-H fair is the culminating event for the 4-H Program year for the 4-H Club participants. The 4-H fair provides the opportunity to showcase the projects youth have been working on throughout the year. With over 200 project areas, ranging from computers to sewing to visual arts, bicycles, citizenship, STEM, natural resources/environment, horticulture, dogs and cats, and agriculture with crops and livestock, and more, there are projects of interest for all. At our traditional fairs, the 4-H participants meet one-on-one with judges in each of their selected project areas to discuss the project and the process of “learning by doing”. Through our Virtual 4-H Fairs, youth had a new opportunity to showcase their projects and knowledge with judges on a virtual/computer platform. Expert judges then awarded participants with ribbons, trophies for special projects, and the best in the class were selected to represent our area at the Illinois State Fair in August. This year the Illinois State Fair will also provide a Virtual 4-H exhibition and recognition for the general project areas. Livestock projects will be judged in September. Extension is very fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers who share their time, interests and talents in support of our youth. These dedicated volunteers extend the reach of our programs to many communities. A huge thank you goes out
to all of our 4-H families, 4-H Community Club Leaders, SPIN Club Leaders, 4-H Fair Project Superintendents, 4-H Fair Judges, Home and Community Education Association members, Fair Boards, and all others who come together with University of Illinois Extension throughout the year to support our area’s youth! (Additional volunteers are needed to lead 4-H clubs. Extension provides the screening, training and resources to get your club active and exploring interests and talents of our youth in a fun and an informal environment. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer. We need your help and we can get you started. 4-H is preparing youth to be our future community leaders. 4-Hers say, “4-H is fun!”) We are so grateful to our local donors who make the 4-H Programs possible. Our program budget is based upon local donations which bring back State and Federal funding to serve our local people. We thank our annual funders, businesses and individuals who sponsor 4-H fair trophies, civic groups and organizations who make annual contributions, and all who donate to support this special community-based program. If you would like to become an annual supporter, please call the local Extension office – we need your help and support at whatever level you choose. Every dollar makes a difference in serving our youth and families! Plan now to explore the many 4-H opportunities available and to join 4-H this fall to start a learning and service adventure. We look forward to visiting with you and connecting you and your family with the 4-H experiences that will provide fun and lasting memories that will likely become a program you choose to pass on to your children and grandchildren. We hope you will join us in this great adventure! Enrollment in 4-H is open throughout the year so please contact us whenever you are ready. Youth can join at any time, however, starting in the fall allows for the full opportunities of the program year. We look forward to having you participate in the 2021 4-H fair in your county! Thank you for helping us to celebrate our area youth and the positive ways they contribute to our local communities and society! With warm regards, Jill Guynn University of Illinois Extension County Director

ELIMINATE BLENDING CONTAMINATION Multiple bin spreading eliminates blending contamination that can ruin crops. Spreading multiple products in one pass reduces man hours, field compaction and fuel consumption by reducing trips across the field. All these benefits add up to a higher rate of return on your investment.
