4-H Fairs

4-H Fair Results

Letter from Extension County Director

First, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Erin Orwig, the new County Director for Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, and Putnam counties. I started in this position last fall, so I was excited to participate this summer in the 4-H fairs. I was a 10-year member of 4-H in Bureau County, and it was always the highlight of my summers growing up. I’m sure it is the same for many of the youth in our counties as well. 4-H provides many lifelong lessons. During my time as a 4-H member I learned how to persevere. If I was awarded a red ribbon, I tried to improve my skills for next year’s fair, and maybe earn a coveted purple ribbon. I learned how to win and lose graciously. I showed hogs and not every year was a top year for me, but I always had fun with my fellow 4-H members. This was a time before social media, so I would only see 4-H members from other communities a few times a year with the fair being the highlight. My community is much larger due to the relationships I built as a 4-H member. One of the biggest skills I gained as a 4-H member was public speaking. From a young age I was giving presentations at club meetings, speaking to judges at the fair, and then larger audiences as I got older.

If all of the skills sound important to you as a parent or guardian, please consider having your child join a local 4-H club. Participation can begin as early as 5 years old as a Cloverbud or a community club member at 8 years old. Contact your local extension office if you are unsure of the clubs available in your area. Enrollment is open throughout the year, so any time is a good time to join 4-H!

If all of the skills sound important to you as a community member, please consider a donation to your local extension office. We appreciate our local donors who make our programs a

reality. We use donations for program supplies, 4-H trophies, Special Interest (SPIN) programs, STEM activities, after school programs, and so much more for our youth. 4-H does not just happen at the fair. Our staff are involved in their counties all year!

We could not have the 4-H fair without the help of many, many volunteers. We have hundreds of volunteers donating their time, interests, and talents to 4-H each year. We thank all of the 4-H families, 4-H Community Club leaders, SPIN Club leaders, 4-H Project Superintendents, 4-H Fair judges, Home and Community Education Association members, fair boards, and everyone else who works with us to support our local youth throughout the year. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.

Thank you to everyone who made the 2023 4-H Fairs a success! A special thank you to all the Extension staff who work very hard to make the fairs look effortless. So much goes on before and after the fair to provide the youth with the best week possible. I’m very proud of the work they do all year, but especially during the summer months. I am looking forward to next year already.

In kindness, Erin Orwig
