OF ELSBETH ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+ WITH SHOWTIME

Q: It’s nice to see Wendell Pierce back on TV regularly in “Elsbeth.” I also enjoyed him on “The Wire,” but hasn’t he done other series as well?

A: He certainly has. Most recently before CBS’s and Paramount+’s “Elsbeth,” the actor was a regular on Prime Video’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and BBC America’s “The Watch,” and he also had a recurring part in the third season of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” on Starz. Prior to that, he also was a recurring player on USA Network’s “Suits” and “Unsolved,” NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” and “Third Watch,” Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” the syndicated “Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne,” Earlier, Pierce had regular roles on several other series … and some of them were sitcoms, though he has been known primarily for dramatic work in recent times. The comedies included CBS’s “The Odd Couple” remake, “The Brian Benben Show” and “The Gregory Hines Show,” and NBC’s “The Michael J. Fox Show” and “The Weber Show.” HBO’s “Treme” – for which Pierce received particular notice from television critics – also featured him regularly, as did CBS’s “Numb3rs” and “Moloney,” and ABC’s “Capital News.”

Additionally, Pierce has done prominent parts in made-for-TV movies. He played Clarence Thomas in HBO’s “Confirmation” and Coach Calhoun in the Fox staging of “Grease Live!,” and he has scores of one-shot guest roles in other series to his credit. On stage in recent years, Pierce had major critical and popular success as Willy Loman in a revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” both on Broadway and in London, earning award nominations in both places for his performance. (He won a Tony Award in 2012 for the play “Clybourne Park.”)

New York Mets, Alonso take on top division rivals Atlanta Braves

Get your popcorn ready, folks! Pete Alonso and the New York Mets get set to wrap up their second season series against the red-hot Atlanta Braves on Sunday, May 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta, with all of the action broadcast live on ESPN.

The Mets are ready to put last season behind them with their 2024 campaign off to a much better start. With 12 wins and 11 losses (at the time of writing) so far this season, the team, currently sitting in third, is looking to fight its way to the top spot in the National League East Division.

Entering free agency this off-season, 28-year-old first baseman — and face of the New York Mets — Pete Alonso is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, having put up 46 home runs, 118 RBIs and 92 runs in 154 games, proving his value to the Mets organization.

The Braves, meanwhile, are looking to build off a fantastic 2023 campaign. As the Braves owned one of the best offenses in MLB history, they slugged a total of 307 home runs, with exceptional play from the likes of Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson. Last season, the Mets struggled to muster any type of game, going 3-10 on the year against the elite offense of the Braves. But, with the team off to a better start this season and sitting two games behind the top spot in the NL East, look for Alonso and the Mets to come out swinging early against a hungry Atlanta Braves squad.

Penelope, Colin cosy up for Season 3 of ‘Bridgerton’

Dearest gentle readers, it is with a happy heart and hopeful intentions that we make the following proclamation. After two drawn-out years of wistful longing, “Bridgerton” fans — not unlike their divisive Lady Whistledown — have a date. Don your best outfit and make haste, for your carriage awaits: Season 3 of the highly anticipated Shondaland series releases its first of two parts Thursday, May 16, on Netflix.

The series follows the Bridgerton family’s eight siblings, many of whom are now of marriageable age, as they each seek their perfect life partner. Set in Regency-era (1811-1820) England, the siblings and their friends attend various balls, garden parties and other society events with the hopes of getting their names into the best, most desirable circles and securing a spouse by the end of courting season.

The first season of the show, based on author Julia Quinn’s first book “The Duke & I,” followed Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor, “Younger”), the family’s eldest daughter, as she found love with her sworn nemesis, the pedantic-but-charming Simon Bassett (Regé-Jean Page, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” 2023), Duke of Hastings. The second season, meanwhile, took source material notes from Quinn’s “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” heading backward through the siblings to the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey, “Broadchurch”), as he, too, overcame prejudice and wed strong-willed summer visitor and debutante Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley, “Sex Education”).

The third season requires a slight shift with respect to the established reading order. Season 3 is based not on Quinn’s third book, but on her fourth, “Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.”

Penelope “has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters,” writes the Netflix synopsis. “But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly ... [so] Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season.”

While discussing why the Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”) production chose to rejig the order of Quinn’s books to favor the Polin storyline, showrunner Jess Brownell, who succeeds fellow “Scandal” writer Chris Van Dusen in the role this season, told Variety: “It really felt like the perfect moment to tee it up.”

“I really feel like it’s Colin and Penelope’s time,” Brownell elaborated. “Because we’ve been watching both of these actors on our screens since Season 1, we’ve already invested in them a little bit. ... I feel like, especially in the last season, there are these moments of tension between them where ... Colin walks up to the line of almost realizing that Penelope has feelings for him but doesn’t quite get there. Instead of treading water on that dynamic, we wanted to push it into their season.”

Decades before the arrival of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), there was another girl in another game. Q: What’s Tom Hiddleston up to post-”Loki,” and is it more “Night Manager”?

A: After years of saying maybe, Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” 2012) is finally saying yes: there will be another season of “The Night Manager.” There will be two, in fact.

BBC, which produced and aired the show in the U.K. (it aired on AMC in North America) officially announced in April that it would be producing two more seasons.

A few days later, Hiddleston confirmed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that it was happening, he would be involved, and they would be working from a whole new story.

That latter bit is necessary because the first season — originally intended as a miniseries — was based on the novel of the same name by the great spy novelist John le Carré, and it told the whole story. The next seasons will need to come up with new exploits for Hiddleston’s character, the hotel manager of the show’s title, who in the first season became a reluctant spy to take down a genteel arms dealer (Hugh Laurie, “House”).

The lack of source material was one obstacle to getting more seasons made, but the other was Hiddleston’s schedule. Because as popular as “The Night Manager” was — and it was, earning huge ratings and numerous awards — Hiddleston was committed at the same time to an even more popular screen phenomenon: the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

His villainous character, Loki, who first appeared in the megahit 2011 film “Thor,” had become a central player in the MCU, including the Avengers films and, eventually, his own show, “Loki,” on Disney+.

Though you can never say never with fantasy properties, the second season of “Loki,” released last November, seems to have been the end. Hiddleston, at least, seems to think so. He said on “The Tonight Show” that it was “the conclusion to six films, and 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life.”
