Jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the much-anticipated FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday, July 20, providing a platform for the world’s best soccer players to showcase their skills.
This year’s international tournament has arguably the most talented pool of players, with several teams poised to make a strong run, though all eyes will be on the reigning and two-time defending champion: the United States. Heading into this tournament, the U.S. is looking to secure its fifth World Cup title and make history by becoming the first women’s football team to win a record third consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The squad has no shortage of experience — in fact, this will be the fourth World Cup tournament for forward Alex Morgan. A two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, the San Diego Wave FC star played a big role in helping the U.S. secure a spot in this year’s World Cup. In the title match of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship (formerly the CONCACAF Women’s Championship), Morgan scored on a penalty kick to defeat Canada 1-0, earning the team a berth in both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics. Having already played on two of the most talented teams, in 2015 and 2019, Morgan sees many similar championship qualities on this year’s team.
“I think this is the best team we’ve ever had,” Morgan told The Guardian in an interview. “I feel like we have the talent, we have the quality, we have the right coach, the right players, the right camaraderie, the right mentality.” Going into the tournament with confidence at an all-time high, the U.S. will start its quest for another World Cup championship on Friday, July 21, with a Group E match against Vietnam, airing live (from Auckland, New Zealand) on Fox.
